2022-08-01Get rid of fprintf_vma and sprintf_vmaAlan Modra1-7/+0
These two macros print either a 16 digit hex number or an 8 digit hex number. Unfortunately they depend on both target and host, which means that the output for 32-bit targets may be either 8 or 16 hex digits. Replace them in most cases with code that prints a bfd_vma using PRIx64. In some cases, deliberately lose the leading zeros. This change some output, notably in base/offset fields of m68k disassembly which I think looks better that way, and in error messages. I've kept leading zeros in symbol dumps (objdump -t) and in PE header dumps. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (fprintf_vma, sprintf_vma, printf_vma): Delete. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * bfd.c (bfd_sprintf_vma): Don't use sprintf_vma. 2022-08-01PR29348, BFD_VMA_FMT wrongAlan Modra1-22/+12
There is a problem with my commit 0e3c1eebb2, which replaced bfd_uint64_t with uint64_t: Some hosts typedef int64_t to long long even when long is the same size as long long. That confuses the code choosing one of "l", "ll", or "I64" for BFD_VMA_FMT, and results in warnings. Write a direct configure test for the printf int64_t style instead. This removes the last use of BFD_HOST_64BIT_LONG, so delete that. Note that the changes to configure.com are pure guesswork. PR 29348 * bfd-in.h (BFD_HOST_64BIT_LONG): Don't define. (BFD_VMA_FMT): Define using BFD_INT64_FMT when 64-bit. (bfd_vma, bfd_signed_vma): Move comments to 64-bit typedefs. * configure.ac (BFD_HOST_64BIT_LONG): Delete. (BFD_INT64_FMT): New config test. * configure.com: Update similarly. * Makefile.in: Regenerate. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * configure: Regenerate.
2022-05-27Replace bfd_hostptr_t with uintptr_tAlan Modra1-3/+0
bfd_hostptr_t is defined as a type large enough to hold either a long or a pointer. It mostly appears in the coff backend code in casts. include/coff/internal.h struct internal_syment and union internal_auxent have the only uses in data structures, where comparison with include/coff/external.h and other code reveals that the type only needs to be large enough for a 32-bit integer or a pointer. That should mean replacing with uintptr_t is OK.
2022-05-27Remove much of BFD_HOST configuryAlan Modra1-23/+2
This patch removes the definition of bfd_uint64_t and bfd_int64_t as well as most BFD_HOST_* which are now unused.
2022-05-27Remove use of bfd_uint64_t and similarAlan Modra1-12/+12
Requiring C99 means that uses of bfd_uint64_t can be replaced with uint64_t, and similarly for bfd_int64_t, BFD_HOST_U_64_BIT, and BFD_HOST_64_BIT. This patch does that, removes #ifdef BFD_HOST_* and tidies a few places that print 64-bit values.
2022-01-02Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

2021-10-24asan: c4x, c54x coff_canonicalize_reloc buffer overflowAlan Modra1-2/+2
Sometimes the investigation of a fuzzing bug report leads into areas you'd rather not go. In this instance by the time I'd figured out the real cause was a target variant that had never been properly supported in binutils, the time needed to fix it was less than the time needed to rip it out. * coffcode.h (coff_set_alignment_hook): Call bfd_coff_swap_reloc_in not coff_swap_reloc_in. 2021-09-02PTR_ADD and NPTR_ADD for bfd.hAlan Modra1-0/+5
This defines a couple of macros used to avoid ubsan complaints about calculations involving NULL pointers. PTR_ADD should be used in the case where it is known that the offset is always zero with a NULL pointer, and you'd like to know if a non-zero offset is ever used. NPTR_ADD should be rarely used, but is defined for cases where a non-zero offset is expected and should be ignored if the pointer is NULL. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (PTR_ADD, NPTR_ADD): Define. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * elf-eh-frame.c (adjust_eh_frame_local_symbols): Avoid NULL pointer calculations. * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_strip_zero_sized_dynamic_sections): Likewise. 2021-04-05C99 bfd configuryAlan Modra1-17/+1
Certain library headers and functions are required by C99. This removes configure tests for them. The patch also removes AC_ISC_POSIX and AC_HEADER_DIRENT, which the autoconf manual states are obsolescent. sys/time.h is no longer tangled up with time.h so it can be handled by the gprof configure. * configure.ac: Don't check for long long or long double type. Don't check for alloca.h, limits.h, stddef.h, stdlib.h, string.h, strings.h, time.h, wchar.h, wctype.h or sys/time.h. 2019-09-20bfd macro conversion to inline functions, sectionAlan Modra1-25/+0
This one exposed a bug in tic6x gas, found with inline function parameter type checking. struct bfd_section and struct bfd_symbol both have a flags field, so bfd_is_com_section (symbol) compiled OK when bfd_is_com_section was a macro but didn't special case common symbols. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_section_name, bfd_section_size, bfd_section_vma), (bfd_section_lma, bfd_section_alignment, bfd_section_flags), (bfd_section_userdata, bfd_is_com_section, discarded_section), (bfd_get_section_limit_octets, bfd_get_section_limit): Delete macros. * bfd.c (bfd_get_section_limit_octets, bfd_get_section_limit), (bfd_section_list_remove, bfd_section_list_append), (bfd_section_list_prepend, bfd_section_list_insert_after), (bfd_section_list_insert_before, bfd_section_removed_from_list): New inline functions. * section.c (bfd_is_und_section, bfd_is_abs_section), (bfd_is_ind_section, bfd_is_const_section, bfd_section_list_remove), (bfd_section_list_append, bfd_section_list_prepend), (bfd_section_list_insert_after, bfd_section_list_insert_before), (bfd_section_removed_from_list): Delete macros. 2019-09-19bfd_section_* macrosAlan Modra1-15/+9
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage in gas processing. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma), (bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment), (bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags), (bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete. 2019-05-21AArch64: Implement choice between Cortex-A53 erratum workarounds. (PR ld/24373)Tamar Christina1-2/+11
The Cortex-A53 erratum currently has two ways it can resolve the erratum when using the flag --fix-cortex-a53-843419: 1) If the address is within the range of an ADR instruction it rewrites the ADRP into an ADR, and those doesn't need the use of a veneer. 2) If the address is not within range, it adds a branch to a veneer which will execute the final bit of the erratum workaround and branch back to the call site. When we do this we always generate the veneers and we always align the size of the text section to 4KB. This is because we only know which workaround we can use after all linking has finished and all addresses are known. This means even though the veneers are not used, we still generate the section and we still change the size of the input section. This is problematic for small memory devices as this would require the user to take about a ~4KB hit in memory even though it's not even used. Since there's no real way to restart the linking process from the final write phase this patch solves the issue by allowing the user more control over which erratum workaround gets used. Concretely this changes the option --fix-cortex-a53-843419 to take optional arguments --fix-cortex-a53-843419[=full|adr|adrp] - full (default): Use both ADRP and ADR workaround. This is equivalent to not specifying any options and is the default behavior before this patch. - adr: Only use the ADR workaround, this will not cause any increase in binary size but linking will fail if the referenced address is out of range of an ADR instruction. - adrp: Use only the ADRP workaround, this will never rewrite your ADRP. In the cases where the user knows how big their binaries are the `adr` option would prevent the unneeded overhead. bfd/ChangeLog: PR ld/24373 * bfd-in.h (enum erratum_84319_opts): New (bfd_elf64_aarch64_set_options, bfd_elf32_aarch64_set_options): Change int to enum erratum_84319_opts. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * elfnn-aarch64.c (struct elf_aarch64_link_hash_table): Change fix_erratum_843419 to use new enum, remove fix_erratum_843419_adr. 2019-03-13[BFD, LD, AArch64, 2/3] Add --force-bti to enable BTI and to select BTI ↵Sudakshina Das1-2/+36
enabled PLTs This is part of the patch series to add support for BTI and PAC in AArch64 linker. 1) This patch adds a new ld command line option: --force-bti. In the presence of this option, the linker enables BTI with the GNU_PROPERTY_AARCH64_FEATURE_1_BTI feature. This gives out warning in case of missing gnu notes for BTI in inputs. 2) It also defines a new set of BTI enabled PLTs. These are used either when all the inputs are marked with GNU_PROPERTY_AARCH64_FEATURE_1_BTI or when the new --force-bti option is used. This required adding new fields in elf_aarch64_link_hash_table so that we could make the PLT related information more generic. 3) It also defines a dynamic tag DT_AARCH64_BTI_PLT. The linker uses this whenever it picks BTI enabled PLTs. 2018-08-21Pack reloc_howto_structAlan Modra1-3/+0
This patch uses bitfields in reloc_howto_struct, reducing its size from 80 to 40 bytes on 64-bit hosts and from 52 to 32 bytes on 32-bit hosts (with a 32-bit bfd_vma). I've also added a new "negate" field rather than making the encoded "size" field do double duty as both a size and a flag. There was just one use of an encoded size of 8, which according to bfd_get_reloc_size meant 16 bytes, in vms-alpha.c ALPHA_R_LINKAGE. See git commit c3d8e071bf adding ALPHA_R_LINKAGE and git commit 8612a388f7 decoding size 8 in bfd_get_reloc_size. Since no other part of BFD handles 16 byte relocs, I've removed that encoding and special cased the ALPHA_R_LINKAGE size in vms-alpha.c. * reloc.c (reloc_howto_type): Typedef. (bfd_symbol): Delete forward declaration. (struct reloc_howto_struct): Add "negate" field. Make "size", "bitsize", "rightshift", "bitpos", "complain_on_overflow", "pc_relative", "partial_inplace", and "pcrel_offset" bitfields. Rearrange for better packing. Revise comments. (HOWTO): Map to rearranged reloc_howto_struct. (bfd_get_reloc_size): Delete now unused cases. (read_reloc, write_reloc): Likewise. (apply_reloc, _bfd_relocate_contents): Test howto->negate rather than howto->size < 0 for negated relocation values. * coff-rs6000.c (xcoff_complain_overflow_bitfield_func): Avoid signed/unsigned warning. (xcoff_ppc_relocate_section): Delete "condition is always false" code. * coff64-rs6000.c (xcoff64_ppc_relocate_section): Likewise. * cpu-ns32k.c (do_ns32k_reloc): Adjust to suit reloc_howto_struct changes. * vms-alpha.c (_bfd_vms_write_etir, alpha_vms_slurp_relocs): Use size 16 for ALPHA_R_LINKAGE. (alpha_howto_table <ALPHA_R_LINKAGE>): Set encoded size and bitsize to zero. * bfd-in.h (reloc_howto_type): Delete. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate.
