When the linker sees an input object containing nothing but IR during
rescan, it should ignore it (LTO phase is over). But if the input object
is a fat IR object, which has non-IR code as well, it should be used to
resolve references as if it did not contain any IR at all. This patch
adds lto_type to bfd and linker avoids claiming a fat IR object if no IR
object should be claimed.

Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:
1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
files (which should have their copyright message removed).
3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes.
4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

(For some reason this commit was not applied at the time that the patch was approved).

There isn't any reason to think that a particular buffer size is
ideal in bfd, so let's just not define it.
* libbfd-in.h (DEFAULT_BUFFERSIZE): Don't define.
* libbfd.h: Regenerate.
* archive.c (AR_WRITE_BUFFERSIZE): Substitute value.
* vms-lib.c (_bfd_vms_lib_write_archive_contents): Likewise.
* coff-rs6000.c (do_copy): Likewise, and use sizeof.

These were renamed from bfd_read and bfd_write back in 2001 when they
lost an unnecessary parameter. Rename them back, and get rid of a few
casts that are only needed without prototyped functions (K&R C).
|
|
* archive.c (_bfd_write_archive_contents): Use a larger buffer in order to improve efficiency.

bfd/doc/chew.c extracts documentation from source code comments
annotated with keywords, and generates much of bfd.h and libbfd.h from
those same comments. The docs have suffered from people (me too)
adding things like CODE_FRAGMENT to the source to put code into bfd.h
without realising that CODE_FRAGMENT also puts @example around said
code into the docs. So we have random senseless things in the docs.
This patch fixes that problem (well, the senseless things from
CODE_FRAGMENT), moves most of the code out of bfd-in.h, and improves a
few chew.c features. libbfd.h now automatically gets ATTRIBUTE_HIDDEN
prototypes, and indentation in bfd.h and libbfd.h is better.

This element is unused. Ideally we'd be moving archive_head and
other archive specific fields from struct bfd to here, but that's a
much larger change than this little bit of cleanup.
* libbfd-in.h (struct artdata): Delete archive_head.
* libbfd.h: Regenerate.
* archive.c,
* coff-rs6000.c,
* coff64-rs6000.c: Delete comments mentioning artdata archive_head.

The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.

BFD_VMA_FMT can't be used in format strings that need to be
translated, because the translation won't work when the type of
bfd_vma differs from the machine used to compile .pot files. We've
known about this for a long time, but patches slip through review.
So just get rid of BFD_VMA_FMT, instead using the appropriate PRId64,
PRIu64, PRIx64 or PRIo64 and SCN variants for scanf. The patch is
mostly mechanical, the only thing requiring any thought is casts
needed to preserve PRId64 output from bfd_vma values, or to preserve
one of the unsigned output formats from bfd_signed_vma values.

Linker plugin_object_p opens the IR archive for each IR archive member.
For GCC plugin, plugin_object_p closes the archive file descriptor. But
for LLVM plugin, the archive file descriptor remains open. If there are
3000 IR archive members, there are 3000 file descriptors for them. We
can run out of file descriptors petty easily.
1. Add archive_plugin_fd and archive_plugin_fd_open_count to bfd so that
we can cache and reuse the IR archive file descriptor for all IR archive
members in the archive.
2. Add bfd_plugin_close_file_descriptor to properly close the IR archive
file descriptor.

A recent BFD change caused a build failure for a Windows->PPC cross:
ld.exe: ../bfd/libbfd.a(coff-rs6000.o):coff-rs6000.c:(.text+0x4571): undefined reference to `getuid'
ld.exe: ../bfd/libbfd.a(coff-rs6000.o):coff-rs6000.c:(.text+0x457e): undefined reference to `getgid'
This patch fixes the problem by moving the replacement definitions of
getuid and getgid to system.h.

ldmain.c:add_archive_element copies file name pointers from the bfd to
a lang_input_statement_type.
input->filename = abfd->filename;
input->local_sym_name = abfd->filename;
This results in stale pointers when twiddling the bfd filename in
places like the pe ld after_open. So don't free the bfd filename,
and make copies using bfd_alloc memory that won't result in small
memory leaks that annoy memory checkers.

The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed
to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on
their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's
also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the
object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used
and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the
target that allocated the memory.
It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed.
In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with
ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup
function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to
tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. The only cleanup
that does anything at this stage is the alpha-vms one.

bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many
places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are
lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use
size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A
32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and
processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some
of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There
no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically
all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't
need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have
something like
symcount * sizeof (void *)
when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that
this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is
larger by far than that of a pointer.

BFD was leaking memory in bfd_check_format_matches. As part of
deciding the proper format of an archive, BFD looks at the format of
the first file stored. That file's bfd was left open for reasons
given in a comment removed in git commit 0e71e4955cd1 that said:
/* We ought to close `first' here, but we can't, because
we have no way to remove it from the archive cache.
It's close to impossible to figure out when we can
release bfd_ardata. FIXME. */
Well, things have changed since that comment was true and we now can
remove files from the archive cache. Closing the first file is good
and cures some of the leaks. Other leaks are caused by
bfd_check_format_matches throwing away bfd tdata before trying a new
match. That lost the element cache set up when format checking the
first element in the archive. The easiest and cleanest fix is to
simply disable the caching when checking the first element.
PR 24891
* bfd.c (struct bfd): Add no_element_cache.
* archive.c (_bfd_get_elt_at_filepos): Don't add element to

Bug #13157 is about a gdb regression, where previously it could handle
universal libraries, but now cannot.
gdb isn't working for me on macOS for other reasons, so I wrote this
small test program to show the problem:
#include <config.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <bfd.h>

die (const char *what)
{
fprintf (stderr, "die: %s\n", what);
exit (1);
}
int
main (int argc, char **argv)
{
bfd *file = bfd_openr (argv[1], NULL);
if (file == NULL)
die ("couldn't open");
if (!bfd_check_format (file, bfd_archive))
die ("not an archive");
printf ("yay\n");

Then I built a simple universal binary. With git master BFD, I get:
$ ./doit ./universal-exe
die: not an archive
Jeff Muizelaar tracked this down to the BFD change for PR binutils/21787.
This patch changed bfd_generic_archive_p to sometimes reset the BFD's
"format" field.
However, simply changing bfd_generic_archive_p regressed the test case
in that bug.
Debugging PR binutils/21787 again, what I saw is that the mach-o
universal binary support acts like a bfd_archive but does not provide
a _close_and_cleanup function. However, if a BFD appears as an
archive member, it must always remove its own entry from its parent's
map. Otherwise, when the parent is destroyed, the already-destroyed
child BFD will be referenced. mach-o does not use the usual archive
member support, so simply using _bfd_archive_close_and_cleanup (as
other targets do) will not work.
This patch fixes the problem by introducing a new
_bfd_unlink_from_archive_parent function, then arranging for it to be
called in the mach-o case.
Ok?
