2020-12-16varasm: Fix up __patchable_function_entries handlingJakub Jelinek1-3/+3
The SECTION_LINK_ORDER changes don't seem to work properly. If I compile: static inline __attribute__((__gnu_inline__)) __attribute__((__unused__)) __attribute__((patchable_function_entry(0, 0))) int foo (int x) { return x + 1; } static inline __attribute__((__gnu_inline__)) __attribute__((__unused__)) __attribute__((patchable_function_entry(0, 0))) int bar (int x) { return x + 2; } int baz (int x) { return foo (x) + 1; } int qux (int x) { return bar (x) + 2; } (distilled from aarch64 Linux kernel) with -O2 -fpatchable-function-entry=2 on aarch64 compiler configured against latest binutils, I get: ... .section __patchable_function_entries,"awo",@progbits,baz ... .section __patchable_function_entries ... in the assembly, but when it is assembled, one gets: [ 4] __patchable_function_entries PROGBITS 0000000000000000 000060 000008 00 WAL 1 0 8 [ 5] .rela__patchable_function_entries RELA 0000000000000000 000280 000018 18 I 12 4 8 [ 6] __patchable_function_entries PROGBITS 0000000000000000 000068 000008 00 0 0 8 [ 7] .rela__patchable_function_entries RELA 0000000000000000 000298 000018 18 I 12 6 8 i.e. one writable allocated section with SHF_LINK_ORDER and another non-allocated non-writable without link order. The kernel then fails to link: WARNING: modpost: vmlinux.o (__patchable_function_entries): unexpected non-allocatable section. Did you forget to use "ax"/"aw" in a .S file? 2020-12-16Require .init_array/.fini_array support for SHF_GNU_RETAINH.J. Lu1-4/+4
Since SHF_GNU_RETAIN support doesn't work for crtstuff.c which switches the output section directly with asm statement: --- static void __attribute__((used)) __do_global_dtors_aux (void) { static _Bool completed; if (__builtin_expect (completed, 0)) return; completed = 1; } static void __attribute__((__used__)) call___do_global_dtors_aux (void) { asm ("\t.section\t.fini"); __do_global_dtors_aux (); asm ("\t.section\t.text"); } --- use SHF_GNU_RETAIN only if .init_array/.fini_array section is supported. gcc/ PR target/98146 * defaults.h (SUPPORTS_SHF_GNU_RETAIN): New. * varasm.c (get_section): Replace HAVE_GAS_SHF_GNU_RETAIN with SUPPORTS_SHF_GNU_RETAIN. 2020-12-16Warn used and not used symbols in section with the same nameH.J. Lu1-3/+19
When SECTION_RETAIN is used, issue a warning when a symbol without used attribute and a symbol with used attribute are placed in the section with the same name, like int __attribute__((used,section(".data.foo"))) foo2 = 2; int __attribute__((section(".data.foo"))) foo1 = 1; since assembler will put them in different sections with the same section name. gcc/ PR target/98146 * varasm.c (switch_to_section): Warn when a symbol without used attribute and a symbol with used attribute are placed in the section with the same name. gcc/testsuite/ PR target/98146 * c-c++-common/attr-used-5.c: Updated. * c-c++-common/attr-used-6.c: Likewise. * c-c++-common/attr-used-7.c: Likewise. * c-c++-common/attr-used-8.c: Likewise.

2020-12-13varasm: Reject soft frame or arg pointer registers for register vars [PR92469]Jakub Jelinek1-0/+26
The following patch rejects frame, argp and retarg registers (unless they are equal to hard frame pointer registers or if they aren't eliminable) from local or global register vars. These are just internal implementation details eliminated later into hard frame pointer or stack pointer and using them as register variable leads to numerous ICEs. 2020-12-13 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR target/92469 * varasm.c (eliminable_regno_p): New function. 2020-12-11Add missing varasm DECL_P check.Jim Wilson1-0/+1
This fixes a riscv64-linux bootstrap failure. get_constant_section calls the select_section target hook, and select_section calls get_named_section which calls get_section. So it is possible to have a constant not a decl in both of these functions. They already call DECL_P checks everywhere except for the new code HJ recently added. This adds the missing DECL_P check. gcc/ * varasm.c (get_section): Add DECL_P check before DECL_PRESERVE_P.

2020-12-02Use the section flag 'o' for __patchable_function_entriesH.J. Lu1-0/+10
This commit in GNU binutils 2.35: https://sourceware.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=binutils-gdb.git;a=commit;h=b7d072167715829eed0622616f6ae0182900de3e added the section flag 'o' to .section directive: .section __patchable_function_entries,"awo",@progbits,foo which specifies the symbol name which the section references. Assembler creates a unique __patchable_function_entries section with the section, where foo is defined, as its linked-to section. Linker keeps a section if its linked-to section is kept during garbage collection. This patch checks assembler support for the section flag 'o' and uses it to implement __patchable_function_entries section. Since Solaris may use GNU assembler with Solairs ld. Even if GNU assembler supports the section flag 'o', it doesn't mean that Solairs ld supports it. This feature is disabled for Solairs targets. gcc/ PR middle-end/93195 PR middle-end/93197 * configure.ac (HAVE_GAS_SECTION_LINK_ORDER): New. 2020-12-01Use SHF_GNU_RETAIN to preserve symbol definitionsH.J. Lu1-3/+12
In assemly code, the section flag 'R' sets the SHF_GNU_RETAIN flag to indicate that the section must be preserved by the linker. Add SECTION_RETAIN to indicate a section should be retained by the linker and set SECTION_RETAIN on section for the preserved symbol if assembler supports SHF_GNU_RETAIN. All retained symbols are placed in separate sections with .section .data.rel.local.preserved_symbol,"awR" preserved_symbol: ... .section .data.rel.local,"aw" not_preserved_symbol: ... to avoid .section .data.rel.local,"awR" preserved_symbol: ... not_preserved_symbol: ... which places not_preserved_symbol definition in the SHF_GNU_RETAIN section. gcc/ 2020-12-01 H.J. 2020-11-23Implement the "persistent" attributeJozef Lawrynowicz1-1/+18
The "persistent" attribute is used for variables that are initialized by the program loader, but are not initialized by the runtime startup code. 2020-08-31varasm: Optimize memory broadcast for constant vector under AVX512 [PR54201]Jakub Jelinek1-1/+180
I meant something like the following, which on e.g. a dumb: typedef float V __attribute__((vector_size (4 * sizeof (float)))); void foo (V *p, float *q) { p[0] += (V) { 1.0f, 2.0f, 3.0f, 4.0f }; q[0] += 4.0f; q[1] -= 3.0f; q[17] -= 2.0f; q[31] += 1.0f; } testcase merges all the 4 scalar constant pool entries into the CONST_VECTOR one. I'm punting for section anchors and not doing it in the per-function (i.e. non-shared) constant pools simply because I don't know them well enough, don't know whether backends use the offsets for something etc. For section anchors, I guess it would need to be done before (re)computing the offsets and arrange for the desc->mark < 0 entries not to be considered as objects in the object block, for non-shared pools, perhaps it would be enough to call the new function from output_constant_pool before calling recompute_pool_offsets and adjust recompute_pool_offsets to ignore desc->mark < 0. Here is an adjusted patch that ought to merge even the same sized different mode vectors with the same byte representation, etc. It won't really help with avoiding the multiple reads of the constant in the same function, but as you found, your patch doesn't help with that either. Your patch isn't really incompatible with what the patch below does, though I wonder whether a) it wouldn't be better to always canonicalize to an integral mode with as few elts as possible even e.g. for floats b) whether asserting that it simplify_rtx succeeds is safe, whether it shouldn't just canonicalize if the canonicalization works and just do what it previously did otherwise. The following patch puts all pool entries which can be natively encoded into a vector, sorts it by decreasing size, determines minimum size of a pool entry and adds hash elts for each (aligned) min_size or wider power of two-ish portion of the pool constant in addition to the whole pool constant byte representation. This is the version that passed bootstrap/regtest on both x86_64-linux and i686-linux. In both bootstraps/regtests together, it saved (from the statistics I've gathered) 63104 .rodata bytes (before constant merging), in 6814 hits of the data->desc->mark = ~(*slot)->desc->labelno;. 2020-08-31 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR middle-end/54201 * varasm.c: Include alloc-pool.h. 2020-06-18avoid early asm outputRichard Biener1-13/+13
This avoids early assembler output via the gimplifier creating new static CTORs. The output machinery seems to be prepared to output constants recursively and it's just a matter of appropriately defering or not defering output. This also has the advantage of not outputting .string for optimized away local aggregate initializers containing string references. 2020-06-18 Richard Biener <rguenther@suse.de> * varasm.c (assemble_variable): Make sure to not defer output when outputting addressed constants. 2020-06-16middle-end/95690 - avoid MEM_EXPRs for constantsRichard Biener1-1/+0
The following avoids calling set_mem_attributes on the DECL_INITIAL of a CONST_DECL which seems pointless since there cannot be a sensible MEM_EXPR derived from that. We're overwriting both other possibly useful info, alias-set and alignment immediately so the following patch simply removes the call instead of making the function deal with even more (unexpected) trees that are not memory accesses. 2020-06-16 Richard Biener <rguenther@suse.de> PR middle-end/95690 * varasm.c (build_constant_desc): Remove set_mem_attributes call. * gfortran.dg/pr95690.f90: New testcase.
2020-05-01Add patch_area_size and patch_area_entry to crtlH.J. Lu1-28/+2
Currently patchable area is at the wrong place. It is placed immediately after function label and before .cfi_startproc. A backend should be able to add a pseudo patchable area instruction durectly into RTL. This patch adds patch_area_size and patch_area_entry to crtl so that the patchable area info is available in RTL passes. 2020-03-25varasm: Fix output_constructor where a RANGE_EXPR index needs to skip some ↵Jakub Jelinek1-0/+20
elts [PR94303] The following testcase is miscompiled, because output_constructor doesn't output the initializer correctly. The FE creates {[1...2] = 9} in this case, and we emit .long 9; long 9; .zero 8 instead of the expected .zero 8; .long 9; .long 9. If the CONSTRUCTOR is {[1] = 9, [2] = 9}, output_constructor_regular_field has code to notice that the current location (local->total_bytes) is smaller than the location we want to write to (1*sizeof(elt)) and will call assemble_zeros to skip those. But RANGE_EXPRs are handled by a different function which didn't do this, so for RANGE_EXPRs we emitted them properly only if local->total_bytes was always equal to the location where the RANGE_EXPR needs to start. 2020-03-25 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR middle-end/94303 * varasm.c (output_constructor_array_range): If local->index RANGE_EXPR doesn't start at the current location in the constructor, skip needed number of bytes using assemble_zeros or assert we don't go backwards. 2020-01-22i386: Fix up -fdollars-in-identifiers with identifiers starting with $ in ↵Jakub Jelinek1-13/+20
-masm=att [PR91298] In AT&T syntax leading $ is special, so if we have identifiers that start with dollar, we usually fail to assemble it (or assemble incorrectly). As mentioned in the PR, what works is wrapping the identifiers inside of parens, like: movl $($a), %eax leaq ($a)(,%rdi,4), %rax movl ($a)(%rip), %eax movl ($a)+16(%rip), %eax .globl $a .type $a, @object .size $a, 72 $a: .string "$a" .quad ($a) (this is x86_64 -fno-pic -O2). In some places ($a) is not accepted, like as .globl operand, in .type, .size, so the patch overrides ASM_OUTPUT_SYMBOL_REF rather than e.g. ASM_OUTPUT_LABELREF. I didn't want to duplicate what assemble_name is doing (following transparent aliases), so split assemble_name into two parts; just mere looking at the first character of a name before calling assemble_name wouldn't be good enough, a transparent alias could lead from a name not starting with $ to one starting with it and vice versa. 2020-01-22 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR target/91298 * output.h (assemble_name_resolve): Declare. * varasm.c (assemble_name_resolve): New function. 2019-09-18Make assemble_real generate canonical CONST_INTsRichard Sandiford1-6/+8
assemble_real used GEN_INT to create integers directly from the longs returned by real_to_target. assemble_integer then went on to interpret the const_ints as though they had the mode corresponding to the accompanying size parameter: imode = mode_for_size (size * BITS_PER_UNIT, mclass, 0).require (); for (i = 0; i < size; i += subsize) { rtx partial = simplify_subreg (omode, x, imode, i); But in the assemble_real case, X might not be canonical for IMODE. If the interface to assemble_integer is supposed to allow outputting (say) the low 4 bytes of a DImode integer, then the simplify_subreg above is wrong. But if the number of bytes passed to assemble_integer is supposed to be the number of bytes that the integer actually contains, assemble_real is wrong. This patch takes the latter interpretation and makes assemble_real generate const_ints that are canonical for the number of bytes passed. The flip_storage_order handling assumes that each long is a full SImode, which e.g. excludes BITS_PER_UNIT != 8 and float formats whose memory size is not a multiple of 32 bits (which includes HFmode at least). The patch therefore leaves that code alone. If interpreting each integer as SImode is correct, the const_ints that it generates are also correct. 2019-09-18 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * varasm.c (assemble_real): Generate canonical const_ints. 2019-08-14Add generic support for noinit attribute.Christophe Lyon1-0/+11
Similar to what already exists for TI msp430 or in TI compilers for arm, this patch adds support for the "noinit" attribute. It is convenient for embedded targets where the user wants to keep the value of some data when the program is restarted: such variables are not zero-initialized. It is mostly a helper/shortcut to placing variables in a dedicated section. It's probably desirable to add the following chunk to the GNU linker: diff --git a/ld/emulparams/armelf.sh b/ld/emulparams/armelf.sh index 272a8bc..9555cec 100644 --- a/ld/emulparams/armelf.sh +++ b/ld/emulparams/armelf.sh @@ -10,7 +10,19 @@ OTHER_TEXT_SECTIONS='*(.glue_7t) *(.glue_7) *(.vfp11_veneer) *(.v4_bx)' OTHER_BSS_SYMBOLS="${CREATE_SHLIB+PROVIDE (}__bss_start__ = .${CREATE_SHLIB+)};" OTHER_BSS_END_SYMBOLS="${CREATE_SHLIB+PROVIDE (}_bss_end__ = .${CREATE_SHLIB+)}; ${CREATE_SHLIB+PROVIDE (}__bss_end__ = .${CREATE_SHLIB+)};" OTHER_END_SYMBOLS="${CREATE_SHLIB+PROVIDE (}__end__ = .${CREATE_SHLIB+)};" -OTHER_SECTIONS='.note.gnu.arm.ident 0 : { KEEP (*(.note.gnu.arm.ident)) }' +OTHER_SECTIONS=' +.note.gnu.arm.ident 0 : { KEEP (*(.note.gnu.arm.ident)) } + /* This section contains data that is not initialised during load + *or* application reset. */ + .noinit (NOLOAD) : + { + . = ALIGN(2); + PROVIDE (__noinit_start = .); + *(.noinit) + . = ALIGN(2); + PROVIDE (__noinit_end = .); + } +' so that the noinit section has the "NOLOAD" flag.
