Since diagnostic.h is included in over half of the sources, requiring to `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY`
does not make sense. Instead lets unconditionally include memory in system.h.
The majority of this patch is just removing `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` from the sources which currently
have it.
This should also fix the mingw build issue but I have not tried it.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu.

My forthcoming patches for PR other/116613 make much more use of
cloning of pretty_printers than before, so it makes sense as a
preliminary patch for the result of pretty_printer::clone to be a
std::unique_ptr, rather than add more manual uses of "delete".
On doing so, I noticed various other places where naked new/delete is
used for run-time configuration of diagnostics:
* the output format (text vs SARIF)
* client data hooks
* the option manager
* the URLifier
Hence this patch also makes use of std::unique_ptr and ::make_unique for
managing such client policy classes, and also for diagnostic_buffer's
per-format implementations.
Unfortunately we can't directly include <memory> in our internal headers
but instead any of our TUs that make use of std::unique_ptr must #define
INCLUDE_MEMORY before including system.h.
Hence the bulk of this patch is taken up with adding a define of
INCLUDE_MEMORY to hundreds of source files: everything that includes
diagnostic.h or pretty-print.h (and thus anything transitively such as
includers of lto-wrapper.h, c-tree.h, cp-tree.h and rtl-ssa.h).
Thanks to Gaius Mulley for the parts of the patch that regenerated the
m2 files.

At the moment, ranger punts entirely on POLY_INT_CSTs. Numerical
ranges are a bit difficult, unless we do start modelling bounds on
the indeterminates. But we can at least track the nonzero bits.
gcc/
* value-query.cc (range_query::get_tree_range): Use get_nonzero_bits
to populate the irange_bitmask of a POLY_INT_CST.

frange::set() is confusing in that we can set a NAN by specifying a
bound of +-NAN, even though we tecnically disallow NANs in the setter
because the kind can never be VR_NAN. This is a wart for
get_tree_range(), which builds a range out of a tree from the source,
to work correctly. It's ugly, and it showed its limitation while
implementing LTO streaming of ranges.
This patch disallows passing NAN bounds in frange::set() and fixes
get_tree_range.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* value-query.cc (range_query::get_tree_range): Set NAN directly
if necessary.
* value-range.cc (frange::set): Assert that bounds are not NAN.

This converts the irange API to use wide_ints exclusively, along with
its users.
This patch will slow down VRP, as there will be more useless
wide_int to tree conversions. However, this slowdown is only
temporary, as a follow-up patch will convert the internal
representation of iranges to wide_ints for a net overall gain
in performance.

[tl;dr: This is a rewrite of value-range-storage.* such that global
ranges and the internal ranger cache can use the same efficient
storage mechanism. It is optimized such that when wide_ints are
dropped into irange, the copying back and forth from storage will be
very fast, while being able to hold any number of sub-ranges
dynamically allocated at run-time. This replaces the global storage
mechanism which was limited to 6-subranges.]
Previously we had a vrange allocator for use in the ranger cache. It
worked with trees and could be used in place (fast), but it was not
memory efficient. With the upcoming switch to wide_ints for irange,
we can't afford to allocate ranges that can be used in place, because
an irange will be significantly larger, as it will hold full
wide_ints. We need a trailing_wide_int mechanism similar to what we
use for global ranges, but fast enough to use in the ranger's cache.
The global ranges had another allocation mechanism that was
trailing_wide_int based. It was memory efficient but slow given the
constant conversions from trees to wide_ints.
This patch gets us the best of both worlds by providing a storage
mechanism with a custom trailing wide int interface, while at the same
time being fast enough to use in the ranger cache.
We use a custom trailing wide_int mechanism but more flexible than
trailing_wide_int, since the latter has compile-time fixed-sized
wide_ints. The original TWI structure has the current length of each
wide_int in a static portion preceeding the variable length:
template <int N>
struct GTY((user)) trailing_wide_ints
{
...
...
/* The current length of each number.
that will, in turn, turn off TBAA on gimple, trees and RTL. */
struct {unsigned char len;} m_len[N];
/* The variable-length part of the structure, which always contains
at least one HWI. Element I starts at index I * M_MAX_LEN. */
HOST_WIDE_INT m_val[1];
};
We need both m_len[] and m_val[] to be variable-length at run-time.
In the previous incarnation of the storage mechanism the limitation of
m_len[] being static meant that we were limited to whatever [N] could
use up the unused bits in the TWI control world. In practice this
meant we were limited to 6 sub-ranges. This worked fine for global
ranges, but is a no go for our internal cache, where we must represent
things exactly (ranges for switches, etc).
The new implementation removes this restriction by making both m_len[]
and m_val[] variable length. Also, rolling our own allows future
optimization be using some of the leftover bits in the control world.
Also, in preparation for the wide_int conversion, vrange_storage is
now optimized to blast the bits directly into the ultimate irange
instead of going through the irange API. So ultimately copying back
and forth between the ranger cache and the storage mechanism is just a
matter of copying a few bits for the control word, and copying an
array of HOST_WIDE_INTs. These changes were heavily profiled, and
yielded a good chunk of the overall speedup for the wide_int
conversion.
Finally, vrange_storage is now a first class structure with GTY
markers and all, thus alleviating the void * hack in struct
tree_ssa_name and friends. This removes a few warts in the API and

handle comparisons in get_tree_range [PR91645]
When looking into PR91645, I've noticed we handle UN{LT,LE,GT,GE,EQ}_EXPR
comparisons incorrectly.
All those are unordered or ..., we correctly return [1, 1] if one or
both operands are known NANs, and correctly ask the non-UN prefixed
op to fold_range if neither operand may be NAN.
But for the case where one or both operands may be NAN, we always
return [0, 1]. The UN* fold_range tries to handle it by asking
the non-UN prefixed fold_range and if it returns [1, 1] return that,
if it returns [0, 0] or [0, 1] return [0, 1], which makes sense,
because the maybe NAN means that it is the non-UN prefixed fold_range
unioned with [1, 1] in case the maybe NAN is actually NAN at runtime.
The problem is that the non-UN prefixed fold_range always returns [0, 1]
because those fold_range implementations are like:
if (op1.known_isnan () || op2.known_isnan ())
r = range_false (type);
else if (!maybe_isnan (op1, op2))
{
...
}
else
r = range_true_and_false (type);
and so if maybe_isnan, they always return [0, 1]. Now, thinking about it,
this is unnecessary pessimization, for the case where the ... block
returns range_false (type) we actually could do it also if maybe_isnan (op1,
op2), because if one or both operands are NAN, the comparison will be false,
and if neither is NAN, the comparison will be also false. Will fix
incrementally today.
Anyway, the following patch fixes it by asking the non-UN prefixed
fold_range on ranges with NAN cleared, which I think does the right
thing in all cases.
Another change in the patch is that range_query::get_tree_range
always returned VARYING for comparisons, this patch allows to ask about
those as well (they are very much like binary ops, except they take
the important type from the types of the operands rather than result).
Initially I've developed this patch together with changes to tree-call-cdce.cc,
but those result in one regression and apparently aren't actually needed to
fix this bug, the range-op-float.cc changes are enough.

The attatched patch rewrites the NAN and sign handling, dropping both
tristates in favor of a pair of boolean flags for NANs, and nothing at
all for signs. The signs are tracked in the range itself, so now it's
possible to describe things like [-0.0, +0.0] +NAN, [+0, +0], [-5, +0],
[+0, 3] -NAN, etc.
Here is an example of the various ranges and how they are displayed:
[frange] float VARYING NAN ;; Varying includes NAN
[frange] UNDEFINED ;; Empty set as always
[frange] float [] +-NAN ;; Unknown sign NAN
[frange] float [] -NAN ;; -NAN
[frange] float [] +NAN ;; +NAN
[frange] float [-0.0, 0.0] ;; All zeros.
[frange] float [-0.0, -0.0] +-NAN ;; -0 or NAN.
[frange] float [-5.0e+0, -1.0e+0] +NAN ;; [-5, -1] or +NAN
[frange] float [-5.0e+0, -0.0] +-NAN ;; [-5, -0] or NAN
[frange] float [-5.0e+0, -0.0] ;; [-5, -0]
[frange] float [5.0e+0, 1.0e+1] ;; [5, 10]
Notice the NAN signs are decoupled from the range, so we can represent
a negative range with a positive NAN. For this range,
frange::signbit_p() would return false, as only when the signs of the
NANs and range agree can we be certain.
There is no longer any pessimization of ranges for intersects
involving NANs. Also, union and intersect work with signed zeros:
// [-0, x] U [+0, x] => [-0, x]
// [ x, -0] U [ x, +0] => [ x, +0]
// [-0, x] ^ [+0, x] => [+0, x]
// [ x, -0] ^ [ x, +0] => [ x, -0]
The special casing for signed zeros in the singleton code is gone in
favor of just making sure the signs in the range agree, that is
[-0, -0] for example.
I have removed the idea that a known NAN is a "range", so a NAN is no
longer in the endpoints itself. Requesting the bound of a known NAN
is a hard fail. For that matter, we don't store the actual NAN in the
range. The only information we have are the set of boolean flags.
This way we make sure nothing seeps into the frange. This also means
it's explicit that we don't track anything but the sign in NANs. We
can revisit this if we desire to track signalling or whatever
concoction y'all can imagine.
Regstrapped with mpfr tests on x86-64 and ppc64le Linux. Selftests
were also run with -ffinite-math-only on x86-64.
At Jakub's suggestion, I built lapack with associated tests. They
pass on x86-64 and ppc64le Linux with no regressions from mainline.
As a sanity check, I also ran them for -ffinite-math-only on x86 which
(as expected) returned:
NaN arithmetic did not perform per the ieee spec
Otherwise, all tests pass for -ffinite-math-only.

set_* has a very specific meaning for irange's and friends. Methods
prefixed with set_* are setters clobbering the existing range. As
such, the current set_nan() method is confusing in that it's not
actually setting a range to a NAN, but twiddling the NAN flags for an
existing frange.
This patch replaces set_nan() with an update_nan() to set the flag,
and clear_nan() to clear it. This makes the code clearer, and though
the confusing tristate is still there, it will be removed in upcoming
patches.
Also, there is now an actual set_nan() method to set the range to a
NAN. This replaces two out of class functions doing the same thing.
In future patches I will also add the ability to create a NAN with a
specific sign, but doing so now would be confusing because we're not
tracking NAN signs.
We should also submit set_signbit to the same fate, but it's about to
get removed.
No functional changes.

This assert was put here to make sure that the legacy
get_value_range() wasn't being called on stuff that legacy couldn't
handle (floats, etc), because the result would ultimately be copied
into a value_range_equiv.
In this case, simplify_casted_cond() is calling it on an offset_type
which is neither an integer nor a pointer. However, range_of_expr
happily punted on it, and then the fallthru code set the range to
VARYING. As value_range_equiv can store VARYING types of anything
(including types it can't handle), this is fine.
The easiest thing to do is remove the assert. If someone from the non
legacy world tries to get a non integer/pointer range here, it's going
to blow up anyhow because the temporary in get_value_range is
int_range_max.

The current implementation of frange is just a type with some bits to
represent NAN and INF. We can do better and represent endpoints to
ultimately solve longstanding PRs such as PR24021. This patch adds
these endpoints. In follow-up patches I will add support for a bare
bones PLUS_EXPR range-op-float entry to solve the PR.
I have chosen to use REAL_VALUE_TYPEs for the endpoints, since that's
what we use underneath the trees. This will be somewhat analogous to
our eventual use of wide-ints in the irange. No sense going through
added levels of indirection if we can avoid it. That, plus real.*
already has a nice API for dealing with floats.
With this patch, ranges will be closed float point intervals, which
make the implementation simpler, since we don't have to keep track of
open/closed intervals. This is conservative enough for use in the
ranger world, as we'd rather err on the side of more elements in a
range, than less.
For example, even though we cannot precisely represent the open
interval (3.0, 5.0) with this approach, it is perfectably reasonable
to represent it as [3.0, 5.0] since the closed interval is a super set
of the open one. In the VRP/ranger world, it is always better to
err on the side of more information in a range, than not. After all,
when we don't know anything about a range, we just use VARYING which
is a fancy term for a range spanning the entire domain.
Since REAL_VALUE_TYPEs have properly defined infinity and NAN
semantics, all the math can be made to work:
[-INF, 3.0] !NAN => Numbers <= 3.0 (NAN cannot happen)
[3.0, 3.0] => 3.0 or NAN.
[3.0, +INF] => Numbers >= 3.0 (NAN is possible)
[-INF, +INF] => VARYING (NAN is possible)
[-INF, +INF] !NAN => Entire domain. NAN cannot happen.
Also, since REAL_VALUE_TYPEs can represent the minimum and maximum
representable values of a TYPE_MODE, we can disambiguate between them
and negative and positive infinity (see get_max_float in real.cc).
This also makes the math all work. For example, suppose we know
nothing about x and y (VARYING). On the TRUE side of x > y, we can
deduce that:
(a) x cannot be NAN
(b) y cannot be NAN
(c) y cannot be +INF.
(c) means that we can drop the upper bound of "y" from +INF to the
maximum representable value for its type.
Having endpoints with different representation for infinity and the
maximum representable values, means we can drop the +-INF properties
we currently have in the frange.

This modifies the range-op dispatch code to handle floats. Also
provided are the stub routines for the floating point range-ops, as we
need something to dispatch to ;-).
I am not ecstatic about the dispatch code, but there's no getting
around having to switch on the tree code and type in some manner. All
the other alternatives I played with ended up being slower, or harder
to maintain. At least, this one is self-contained in the
range_op_handler API, and less than 0.16% slower for VRP in our
benchmarks.
Tested on x86-64 Linux.

The legacy code in vr_values mostly works on integral types (with few
exceptions such as some conversions from float). This patch makes
vr_values::range_of_expr not die when asked for a range of an
unsupported type. It also keeps the min/max simplification code from
being called on non integrals, similarly to what many of the other
assignment code is doing.
This is all a nop on the current code, but will keep us from
misbehaving when VRP starts working on non-integrals.
Tested on x86-64 Linux.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* value-query.cc (range_query::get_value_range): Add assert.
* vr-values.cc (vr_values::range_of_expr): Make sure we don't ICE
on unsupported types in vr_values.

The global get_nonzero_bits was previously returning -1 for
unsupported types. I dropped this in the conversion to global ranges
and it's causing a problem in the frange work, where CCP is asking for
the nonzero bits of non-integral types. CCP may require further
tweaks, but for now, restore the original behavior.
Also, I'm removing old checks for precision that no longer hold, now
that we handle various types for global ranges.
Tested on x86-64 Linux.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* tree-ssanames.cc (get_nonzero_bits): Return -1 for unsupported
types.
* value-query.cc (get_ssa_name_range_info): Remove precision check.

Currently SSA_NAME_RANGE_INFO only handles integer ranges, and loses
half the precision in the process because its use of legacy
value_range's. This patch rewrites all the SSA_NAME_RANGE_INFO
(nonzero bits included) to use the recently contributed
vrange_storage. With it, we'll be able to efficiently save any ranges
supported by ranger in GC memory. Presently this will only be
irange's, but shortly we'll add floating ranges and others to the mix.
As per the discussion with the trailing_wide_ints adjustments and
vrange_storage, we'll be able to save integer ranges with a maximum of
5 sub-ranges. This could be adjusted later if more sub-ranges are
needed (unlikely).
Since this is a behavior changing patch, I would like to take a few
days for discussion, and commit early next week if all goes well.
A few notes.
First, we get rid of the SSA_NAME_ANTI_RANGE_P bit in the SSA_NAME
since we store full resolution ranges. Perhaps it could be re-used
for something else.
The range_info_def struct is gone in favor of an opaque type handled
by vrange_storage. It currently supports irange, but will support
frange, prange, etc, in due time.
From the looks of it, set_range_info was an update operation despite
its name, as we improved the nonzero bits with each call, even though
we clobbered the ranges. Presumably this was because doing a proper
intersect of ranges lost information with the anti-range hack. We no
longer have this limitation so now we formalize both set_range_info
and set_nonzero_bits to an update operation. After all, we should
never be losing information, but enhancing it whenever possible. This
means, that if folks' finger-memory is not offended, as a follow-up,
I'd like to rename set_nonzero_bits and set_range_info to update_*.
I have kept the same global API we had in tree-ssanames.h, with the
caveat that all set operations are now update as discussed above.
There is a 2% performance penalty for evrp and a 3% penalty for VRP
that is coincidentally in line with a previous improvement of the same
amount in the vrange abstraction patchset. Interestingly, this
penalty is mostly due to the wide int to tree dance we keep doing with
irange and legacy. In a first draft of this patch where I was
streaming trees directly, there was actually a small improvement
instead. I hope to get some of the gain back when we move irange's to
wide-ints, though I'm not in a hurry ;-).
Tested and benchmarked on x86-64 Linux. Tested on ppc64le Linux.
Comments welcome.

[I have conservatively assumed that both the loop-ch and loop-unswitch
passes, which also use the ranger, only support integers and pointers.
If the goal is to handle other types as well, irange::supports_p()
should be Value_Range::supports_type_p(), and any uses of
int_range_max should be converted to Value_Range. I can help in the
conversion if you'd like.]
As discussed, this patch disambiguates the use of supports_type_p
throughout, as what ranger supports is a totally different question
than what a given range variant (irange, frange, etc) supports.
Unfortunately we need both a static method and a virtual method, and
they can't be named the same. The uses are documented in the vrange
class:
+// To query what types ranger and the entire ecosystem can support,
+// use Value_Range::supports_type_p(tree type). This is a static
+// method available independently of any vrange object.
+//
+// To query what a given vrange variant can support, use:
+// irange::supports_p ()
+// frange::supports_p ()
+// etc
+//
+// To query what a range object can support, use:
+// void foo (vrange &v, irange &i, frange &f)
+// {
+// if (v.supports_type_p (type)) ...
+// if (i.supports_type_p (type)) ...
+// if (f.supports_type_p (type)) ...
+// }
The value_range_equiv::supports_p() method can be use to determine
what legacy VRP supports, as irange::supports_p() will no longer be
applicable in the evrp analyzer code base once irange and prange are
split.
Tested on x86-64 Linux.

Finally, the meat of the work. Convert ranger and associated clients
to vrange.
Everything's relatively mechanical given the previous patches. I did
include a minor cleanup in the edge code. There's no need to check
that the type of the switch is an integer as non-integer switches are
invalid. I verified this with an appropriately coded assert.

This patch provides the infrastructure to make range-ops type agnostic.
First, the range_op_handler function has been replaced with an object
of the same name. It's coded in such a way to minimize changes to the
code base, and to encapsulate the dispatch code.
Instead of:
range_operator *op = range_op_handler (code, type);
if (op)
op->fold_range (...);
We now do:
range_op_handler op (code, type);
if (op)
op->fold_range (...);
I've folded gimple_range_handler into the range_op_handler class,
since it's also a query into the range operators.
Instead of:
range_operator *handler = gimple_range_handler (stmt);
We now do:
range_op_handler handler (stmt);
This all has the added benefit of moving all the dispatch code into an
independent class and avoid polluting range_operator (which we'll
further split later when frange and prange come live).
There's this annoying "using" keyword that's been added to each
operator due to hiding rules in C++. The issue is that we will have
different virtual versions of fold_range() for each combination of
operands. For example:
// Traditional binary op on irange's.
fold_range (irange &lhs, const irange &op1, const irange &op2);
// For POINTER_DIFF_EXPR:
fold_range (irange &lhs, const prange &op1, const prange &op2);
// Cast from irange to prange.
fold_range (prange &lhs, const irange &op1, const irange &op2);
Overloading virtuals when there are multiple same named methods causes
hidden virtuals warnings from -Woverloaded-virtual, thus the using
keyword. An alternative would be to have different names:
fold_range_III, fold_range_IPP, fold_range_PII, but that's uglier
still.
Tested on x86-64 & ppc64le Linux.

Now that we have generic ranges, we need a way to define generic local
temporaries on the stack for intermediate calculations in the ranger
and elsewhere. We need temporaries analogous to int_range_max, but
for any of the supported types (currently just integers, but soon
integers, pointers, and floats).
The Value_Range object is such a temporary. It is designed to be
transparently used as a vrange. It shares vrange's abstract API, and
implicitly casts itself to a vrange when passed around.
The ultimate name will be value_range, but we need to remove legacy
first for that to happen. Until then, Value_Range will do.
Sample usage is as follows. Instead of:
extern void foo (vrange &);
int_range_max t;
t.set_nonzero (type);
foo (t);
one does:
Value_Range t (type);
t.set_nonzero (type);
foo (t);
You can also delay initialization, for use in loops for example:
Value_Range t;
...
t.set_type (type);
t.set_varying (type);
Creating an supported range type, will result in an unsupported_range
object being created, which will trap if anything but set_undefined()
and undefined_p() are called on it. There's no size penalty for the
unsupported_range, since its immutable and can be shared across
instances.
Since supports_type_p() is called at construction time for each
temporary, I've removed the non-zero check from this function, which
was mostly unneeded. I fixed the handful of callers that were
passing null types, and in the process sped things up a bit.
As more range types come about, the Value_Range class will be augmented
to support them by adding the relevant bits in the initialization
code, etc.
Tested on x86-64 & ppc64le Linux.

Re-using some common things like EQ_EXPR and other relationals made
certain things easier, but complicated debugging and added extra overhead
when accessing lookup tables. With forthcoming additional relation types,
it makes more sense to simple have a distinct relation kind.
