This patch folds certain reductions of X & CST to X[I] & CST[I] if I is
the only nonzero element of CST. This includes the motivating case in
which CST[I] is -1.
We could do the same for REDUC_MAX on unsigned types, but I wasn't sure
that that special case was worth it.

The PR has:
vect__6.24_42 = vect__5.23_41 * { 0.0, 1.0e+0, 0.0, 0.0 };
which for -fno-signed-zeros -fno-signaling-nans can be simplified to:
vect__6.24_42 = vect__5.23_41 & { 0, -1, 0, 0 };
I deliberately didn't handle COMPLEX_CST or CONSTRUCTOR in
initializer_each_zero_or_onep since there are no current use cases.
The patch also makes (un)signed_type_for handle floating-point types.
I tried to audit all callers and the few that handle null returns would
be unaffected.

The C frontend is able (where expression locations are available) to print
problems with binary operators in 3-location form, labelling the types of
the expressions:
arg_0 op arg_1
~~~~~ ^~ ~~~~~
| |
| arg1 type
arg0 type
The C++ frontend currently just shows the combined location:
arg_0 op arg_1
~~~~~~^~~~~~~~
and fails to highlight where the subexpressions are, or their types.
This patch introduces a op_location_t struct for handling the above
operator-location vs combined-location split, and a new
class binary_op_rich_location for displaying the above, so that the
C++ frontend is able to use the more detailed 3-location form for
type mismatches in binary operators, and for -Wtautological-compare
(where types are not displayed). Both forms can be seen in this
example:
bad-binary-ops.C:69:20: error: no match for 'operator&&' (operand types are
's' and 't')
69 | return ns_4::foo && ns_4::inner::bar;
| ~~~~~~~~~ ^~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| | |
| s t
bad-binary-ops.C:69:20: note: candidate: 'operator&&(bool, bool)' <built-in>
69 | return ns_4::foo && ns_4::inner::bar;
| ~~~~~~~~~~^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The patch also allows for some uses of macros in
-Wtautological-compare, where both sides of the comparison have
been spelled the same way, e.g.:
Wtautological-compare-ranges.c:23:11: warning: self-comparison always
evaluates to true [-Wtautological-compare]
23 | if (FOO == FOO);
| ^~

This is v6 of the patch, as posted to:
https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2018-12/msg01331.html
The C++ frontend gained various location wrapper nodes in r256448 (GCC 8).
That patch:
https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2018-01/msg00799.html
added wrapper nodes around all nodes with !CAN_HAVE_LOCATION_P for:
* arguments at callsites, and for
* typeid, alignof, sizeof, and offsetof.
This is a followup to that patch, adding many more location wrappers
to the C++ frontend. It adds location wrappers for nodes with
!CAN_HAVE_LOCATION_P to:
* all literal nodes (in cp_parser_primary_expression)
* all id-expression nodes (in finish_id_expression), except within a
decltype.
* all mem-initializer nodes within a mem-initializer-list
(in cp_parser_mem_initializer)
However, the patch also adds some suppressions: regions in the parser
for which wrapper nodes will not be created:
* within a template-parameter-list or template-argument-list (in
cp_parser_template_parameter_list and cp_parser_template_argument_list
respectively), to avoid encoding the spelling location of the nodes
in types. For example, "array<10>" and "array<10>" are the same type,
despite the fact that the two different "10" tokens are spelled in
different locations in the source.
* within a gnu-style attribute (none of are handlers are set up to cope
with location wrappers yet)
* within various OpenMP clauses
The patch enables various improvements to locations for bad
initializations, for -Wchar-subscripts, and enables various other
improvements in the followup patch.
For example, given the followup buggy mem-initializer:
class X {
X() : bad(42),
good(42)
{ }
void* bad;
int good;
};
previously, our diagnostic was on the final close parenthesis of the
mem-initializer-list, leaving it unclear where the problem is:
t.cc: In constructor 'X::X()':
t.cc:3:16: error: invalid conversion from 'int' to 'void*' [-fpermissive]
3 | good(42)
| ^
| |
| int
whereas with the patch we highlight which expression is bogus:
t.cc: In constructor 'X::X()':
t.cc:2:13: error: invalid conversion from 'int' to 'void*' [-fpermissive]
2 | X() : bad(42),
| ^~
| |
| int
Similarly, the diagnostic for this bogus initialization:
i.cc:1:44: error: initializer-string for array of chars is too long [-fpermissive]
1 | char test[3][4] = { "ok", "too long", "ok" };
| ^
is improved by the patch so that it indicates which string is too long:
i.cc:1:27: error: initializer-string for array of chars is too long [-fpermissive]
1 | char test[3][4] = { "ok", "too long", "ok" };
| ^~~~~~~~~~

The Linux kernel people want a feature that makes GCC pretend some
inline assembler code is tiny (while it would think it is huge), so
that such code will be inlined essentially always instead of
essentially never.
This patch lets you say "asm inline" instead of just "asm", with the
result that that inline assembler is always counted as minimum cost
for inlining. It implements this for C and C++, making "inline"

This patch implements location wrapper nodes, preserving source locations
of the uses of variables and constants in various places in the
C++ frontend: at the arguments at callsites, and for typeid, alignof,
sizeof, and offsetof.
For example, it allows the C++ FE to underline the pertinent argument
for mismatching calls, for such expressions, improving:
extern int callee (int one, const char *two, float three);
int caller (int first, int second, float third)
{
return callee (first, second, third);
}
from

This patch changes TYPE_VECTOR_SUBPARTS to a poly_uint64. The value is
encoded in the 10-bit precision field and was previously always stored
as a simple log2 value. The challenge was to use this 10 bits to
encode the number of elements in variable-length vectors, so that
we didn't need to increase the size of the tree.
In practice the number of vector elements should always have the form
N + N * X (where X is the runtime value), and as for constant-length
vectors, N must be a power of 2 (even though X itself might not be).
The patch therefore uses the low 8 bits to encode log2(N) and bit
8 to select between constant-length and variable-length vectors.
Targets without variable-length vectors continue to use the old scheme.
A new valid_vector_subparts_p function tests whether a given number
of elements can be encoded. This is false for the vector modes that
represent an LD3 or ST3 vector triple (which we want to treat as arrays
of vectors rather than single vectors).
Most of the patch is mechanical; previous patches handled the changes
that weren't entirely straightforward.

This patch makes vectorizable_reduction cope with variable-length vectors.
We can handle the simple case of an inner loop reduction for which
the target has native support for the epilogue operation. For now we
punt on other cases, but patches after the main SVE submission allow
SLP and double reductions too.

This patch changes the type of current_vector_size to poly_uint64.
It also changes TARGET_AUTOVECTORIZE_VECTOR_SIZES so that it fills
in a vector of possible sizes (as poly_uint64s) instead of returning
a bitmask. The documentation claimed that the hook didn't need to
include the default vector size (returned by preferred_simd_mode),
but that wasn't consistent with the omp-low.c usage.

This patch makes expand_debug_expr track polynomial memory offsets.
It simplifies the handling of the case in which the reference is not
to the first byte of the base, which seemed non-trivial enough to
make it worth splitting out as a separate patch.

This patch adds a tree representation for poly_ints. Unlike the
rtx version, the coefficients are INTEGER_CSTs rather than plain
integers, so that we can easily access them as poly_widest_ints
and poly_offset_ints.
The patch also adjusts some places that previously
relied on "constant" meaning "INTEGER_CST". It also makes
sure that the TYPE_SIZE agrees with the TYPE_SIZE_UNIT for
vector booleans, given the existing:
/* Several boolean vector elements may fit in a single unit. */
if (VECTOR_BOOLEAN_TYPE_P (type)
&& type->type_common.mode != BLKmode)
TYPE_SIZE_UNIT (type)
= size_int (GET_MODE_SIZE (type->type_common.mode));
else
TYPE_SIZE_UNIT (type) = int_const_binop (MULT_EXPR,
TYPE_SIZE_UNIT (innertype),
size_int (nunits));

This patch completes the infrastructure for the introduction of
statement frontiers in C-family languages.
It brings in all the code remaining code needed to introduce and
transform begin stmt trees, gimple stmts, insns and notes, and
ultimately use them to generate the is_stmt column in DWARF2+ line
number tables/programs, however none of it is activated: the option
that would do so will be introduced in a subsequent patch.

This patch introduces a number of new macros and functions that will
be used to distinguish between different kinds of debug stmts, insns
and notes, namely, preexisting debug bind ones and to-be-introduced
nonbind markers.
In a seemingly mechanical way, it adjusts several uses of the macros
and functions, so that they refer to narrower categories when
appropriate.
These changes, by themselves, should not have any visible effect in
the compiler behavior, since the upcoming debug markers are never
created with this patch alone.

This patch uses a simple compression scheme to represent the contents
of a VECTOR_CST using its leading elements. There are three formats:
1) a repeating sequence of N values. This is encoded using the first
N elements.
2) a "foreground" sequence of N values inserted at the beginning of
a "background" repeating sequence of N values, such as:
{ 1, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, ... }. This is encoded using the first 2*N
elements.
2) a "foreground" sequence of N values inserted at the beginning of
a "background" repeating sequence of N interleaved linear series,
such as: { 0, 0, 8, 10, 9, 11, 10, 12, ... }. This is encoded
using the first 3*N elements. In practice the foreground values
are often part of the same series as the background values,
such as: { 1, 11, 2, 12, 3, 13, ... }.
This reduces the amount of work involved in processing simple
vector constants and means that the encoding extends naturally
to variable-length vectors.
