This optimizes the case where a mask Y which fulfills ~Y + 1 == pow2 is used to
clear a some bits and then compared against 0 into one without the masking and
a compare against a different bit immediate.
We can do this for all unsigned compares and for signed we can do it for
comparisons of EQ and NE:
(x & (~255)) == 0 becomes x <= 255. Which for leaves it to the target to
optimally deal with the comparison.
This transformation has to be done in the mid-end because in RTL you don't have
the signs of the comparison operands and if the target needs an immediate this
should be floated outside of the loop.
The RTL loop invariant hoisting is done before split1.
i.e.
void fun1(int32_t *x, int n)
{
for (int i = 0; i < (n & -16); i++)
x[i] = (x[i]&(~255)) == 0;
}
now generates:
.L3:
ldr q0, [x0]
cmhs v0.4s, v2.4s, v0.4s
and v0.16b, v1.16b, v0.16b
str q0, [x0], 16
cmp x0, x1
bne .L3
and floats the immediate out of the loop.
instead of:
.L3:
ldr q0, [x0]
bic v0.4s, #255
cmeq v0.4s, v0.4s, #0
and v0.16b, v1.16b, v0.16b
str q0, [x0], 16
cmp x0, x1

2021 update: Last year I posted a version of this patch:
<https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2020-November/559162.html>
but it didn't make it in. The main objection seemed to be that the
patch tried to do too much, and overlapped with the ME uninitialized
warnings. Since the patch used walk_tree without any data flow info,
it issued false positives for things like a(0 ? b : 42) and similar.
I'll admit I've been dreading resurrecting this because of the lack
of clarity about where we should warn about what. On the other hand,
I think we really should do something about this. So I've simplified
the original patch as much as it seemed reasonable. For instance, it
doesn't even attempt to handle cases like "a((b = 42)), c(b)" -- for
these I simply give up for the whole mem-initializer (but who writes
code like that, anyway?). I also give up when a member is initialized
with a function call, because we don't know what the call could do.
See Wuninitialized-17.C, for which clang emits a false positive but
we don't. I remember having a hard time dealing with initializer lists
in my previous patch, so now I only handle simple a{b} cases, but no
more. It turned out that this abridged version still warns about 90%
cases where users would expect a warning.
More complicated cases are left for the ME, which, for unused inline
functions, will only warn with -fkeep-inline-functions, but so be it.
(This is bug 21678.)
This patch implements the long-desired -Wuninitialized warning for
member initializer lists, so that the front end can detect bugs like
struct A {
int a;
int b;
A() : b(1), a(b) { }
};
where the field 'b' is used uninitialized because the order of member
initializers in the member initializer list is irrelevant; what matters
is the order of declarations in the class definition.
I've implemented this by keeping a hash set holding fields that are not
initialized yet, so at first it will be {a, b}, and after initializing
'a' it will be {b} and so on. Then I use walk_tree to walk the
initializer and if we see that an uninitialized object is used, we warn.
Of course, when we use the address of the object, we may not warn:
struct B {
int &r;
int *p;
int a;
B() : r(a), p(&a), a(1) { } // ok
};
Likewise, don't warn in unevaluated contexts such as sizeof. Classes
without an explicit initializer may still be initialized by their
default constructors; whether or not something is considered initialized
is handled in perform_member_init, see member_initialized_p.

In OpenMP 5.1, num_teams clause can accept either one expression as before,
but it in that case changed meaning, rather than create <= expression
teams it is now create == expression teams. Or it accepts two expressions
separated by :, with the meaning that the first is low bound and second upper
bound on how many teams should be created. The other ways to set number of
teams are upper bounds with lower bound of 1.
The following patch does parsing of this for C/C++. For host teams, we
actually don't need to do anything further right now, we always create
(pretend to create) exactly the requested number of teams, so we can just
evaluate and throw away the lower bound for now.
For teams nested in target, we don't guarantee that though and further
work will be needed.
In particular, omplower now turns the teams part of:
struct S { S (); S (const S &); ~S (); int s; };
void bar (S &, S &);
int baz ();
_Pragma ("omp declare target to (baz)");
void
foo (void)
{
S a, b;
#pragma omp target private (a) map (b)
{
#pragma omp teams firstprivate (b) num_teams (baz ())
{
bar (a, b);
}
}
}
into:
retval.0 = baz ();
retval.1 = retval.0;
{
unsigned int retval.3;
struct S * D.2549;
struct S b;
retval.3 = (unsigned int) retval.1;
D.2549 = .omp_data_i->b;
S::S (&b, D.2549);
#pragma omp teams num_teams(retval.1) firstprivate(b) shared(a)
__builtin_GOMP_teams (retval.3, 0);
{
bar (&a, &b);
}
S::~S (&b);
#pragma omp return(nowait)
}
IMHO we want a new API, say GOMP_teams3 which will take 3 arguments
instead of 2 (the lower and upper bounds from num_teams and thread_limit)
and will return a bool whether it should do the teams body or not.
And, we should add right before outermost {} above
while (__builtin_GOMP_teams3 ((unsigned) retval.1, (unsigned) retval.1, 0))
and remove the __builtin_GOMP_teams call. The current function performs
exit equivalent (at least on NVPTX) which seems bad because that means
the destructors of e.g. private variables on target aren't invoked, and
at the current placement neither destructors of the already constructed
privatized variables in teams.
I'll do this next on the compiler side, but I'm afraid I'll need help
with the nvptx and amdgcn implementations. E.g. for nvptx, we won't be
able to use %ctaid.x . I think ideal would be to use a .shared
integer variable for the omp_get_team_num value, but I don't have any
experience with that, are .shared variables zero initialized by default,
or do they have random value at start? PTX docs say they aren't initializable.

This patch introduces a helper function build_debug_expr_decl to build
DEBUG_EXPR_DECL tree nodes in the most common way and replaces with a
call of this function all code pieces which build such a DECL itself
and sets its mode to the TYPE_MODE of its type.
There still remain 11 instances of open-coded creation of a
DEBUG_EXPR_DECL which set the mode of the DECL to something else. It
would probably be a good idea to figure out that has any effect and if
not, convert them to calls of build_debug_expr_decl too. But this
patch deliberately does not introduce any functional changes.

As the allocate-2.c testcase shows, this change isn't 100% backwards compatible,
one could have allocate and/or align functions that return an OpenMP allocator

Initialize automatic variables with either a pattern or with zeroes to increase
the security and predictability of a program by preventing uninitialized memory
disclosure and use.
GCC still considers an automatic variable that doesn't have an explicit
initializer as uninitialized, -Wuninitialized will still report warning messages
on such automatic variables.
With this option, GCC will also initialize any padding of automatic variables
that have structure or union types to zeroes.
You can control this behavior for a specific variable by using the variable
attribute "uninitialized" to control runtime overhead.

No behavioral change, other than that for a few clauses, operands are now
walked in a different order, and 'OMP_CLAUSE_ERROR' now no longer runs into
'default: gcc_unreachable ();' here (but instead will at some later stage).
Follow-up for r110243 (commit aaf46ef9792bbc562175b606bd1c3f225ea56924)
"Fix PR 25886. Convert OMP_CLAUSE_* into sub-codes".

If an interface is marked 'deprecated' then, presumably, at some point it
will be withdrawn and no longer available. The 'unavailable' attribute
makes it possible to mark up interfaces to indicate this status. It is used
quite extensively in some codebases where a single set of headers can be used
to permit code generation for multiple system versions.
From a configuration perspective, it also allows a compile test to determine
that an interface is missing - rather than requiring a link test.
The implementation follows the pattern of attribute deprecated, but produces
an error (where deprecation produces a warning).
This attribute has been implemented in clang for some years.

In r245300 (commit 02889d23ee3b02854dff203dd87b9a25e30b61b4)
"OpenACC tile clause support" that one had changed to three operands,
similar to 'OMP_CLAUSE_COLLAPSE'.
There is no (existing) test case where this seems to matter (likewise
for 'OMP_CLAUSE_COLLAPSE'), but it's good to be consistent.
gcc/
* tree.c (walk_tree_1) <OMP_CLAUSE_TILE>: Handle three operands.

This construct has been introduced as a replacement for master
construct, but unlike that construct is slightly more general,
has an optional clause which allows to choose which thread
will be the one running the region, it can be some other thread
than the master (primary) thread with number 0, or it could be no
threads or multiple threads (then of course one needs to be careful
about data races).
It is way too early to deprecate the master construct though, we don't
even have OpenMP 5.0 fully implemented, it has been deprecated in 5.1,
will be also in 5.2 and removed in 6.0. But even then it will likely
be a good idea to just -Wdeprecated warn about it and still accept it.
The patch also contains something I should have done much earlier,
for clauses that accept some integral expression where we only care
about the value, forces during gimplification that value into
either a min invariant (as before), SSA_NAME or a fresh temporary,
but never e.g. a user VAR_DECL, so that for those clauses we don't
need to worry about adjusting it.

This patch converts the remaining users of get_range_info and
get_ptr_nonnull to the get_range_query API.
No effort was made to move passes away from VR_ANTI_RANGE, or any other
use of deprecated methods. This was a straight up conversion to the new
API, nothing else.

This enables the alias machinery for WITH_SIZE_EXPR which can appear
in call LHS and arguments. In particular this drops the NULL
return from get_base_address and it adjusts get_ref_base_and_extent
and friends to use the size information in WITH_SIZE_EXPR and
look through it for further processing.
2021-05-19 Richard Biener <rguenther@suse.de>
* builtins.c (get_object_alignment_1): Strip outer
WITH_SIZE_EXPR.
* tree-dfa.c (get_ref_base_and_extent): Handle outer
WITH_SIZE_EXPR for size processing and process the
containing ref.
* tree-ssa-alias.c (ao_ref_base_alias_set): Strip
outer WITH_SIZE_EXPR.
(ao_ref_base_alias_ptr_type): Likewise.
(refs_may_alias_p_2): Allow WITH_SIZE_EXPR in ref->ref
and handle that accordingly, stripping it for the
core alias workers.
* tree.c (get_base_address): Handle WITH_SIZE_EXPR by
looking through it instead of returning NULL.

The problem appears to be triggered by two locations in the front-end
where non-POINTER_SIZE pointers aren't handled right now.
1. An assertion in strip_typedefs is triggered because the alignment
of the types don't match. This in turn is caused by creating the new
type with build_pointer_type instead of taking the type of the
original pointer into account.
2. An assertion in cp_convert_to_pointer is triggered which expects
the target type to always have POINTER_SIZE.
gcc/cp/ChangeLog:
PR c++/100281
* cvt.c (cp_convert_to_pointer): Use the size of the target
pointer type.
* tree.c (cp_build_reference_type): Call
cp_build_reference_type_for_mode with VOIDmode.
(cp_build_reference_type_for_mode): Rename from
cp_build_reference_type. Add MODE argument and invoke
build_reference_type_for_mode.
(strip_typedefs): Use build_pointer_type_for_mode and
cp_build_reference_type_for_mode for pointers and references.
gcc/ChangeLog:
PR c++/100281
* tree.c (build_reference_type_for_mode)
(build_pointer_type_for_mode): Pick pointer mode if MODE argument
is VOIDmode.
(build_reference_type, build_pointer_type): Invoke

Vector indexing leaves us with ARRAY_REFs of VIEW_CONVERT_EXPRs,
sth which array_at_struct_end_p considers a array-at-struct-end
even when there's an underlying decl visible. The following fixes
the latter.
2021-05-17 Richard Biener <rguenther@suse.de>
PR middle-end/100582
* tree.c (array_at_struct_end_p): Get to the base of the
reference before looking for the underlying decl.
* gcc.target/i386/pr100582.c: New testcase.

The fix for PR94775 added more strict checking for type reuse
to check_aligned_type, specifically matching TYPE_USER_ALIGN.
But then build_aligned_type sets TYPE_USER_ALIGN on the built
variant so if the type we build an aligned variant for does not
have TYPE_USER_ALIGN we'll never re-use the newly created aligned
variant. This results in ~35000 identical variants being created
for polyhedron doduc.
The following instead checks that the candidate has TYPE_USER_ALIGN set.

A year ago I submitted this patch:
~~
Here we trip on the TYPE_USER_ALIGN (t) assert in strip_typedefs: it
gets "const d[0]" with TYPE_USER_ALIGN=0 but the result built by
build_cplus_array_type is "const char[0]" with TYPE_USER_ALIGN=1.
When we strip_typedefs the element of the array "const d", we see it's
a typedef_variant_p, so we look at its DECL_ORIGINAL_TYPE, which is
char, but we need to add the const qualifier, so we call
cp_build_qualified_type -> build_qualified_type
where get_qualified_type checks to see if we already have such a type
by walking the variants list, which in this case is:
char -> c -> const char -> const char -> d -> const d
Because check_base_type only checks TYPE_ALIGN and not TYPE_USER_ALIGN,
we choose the first const char, which has TYPE_USER_ALIGN set. If the
element type of an array has TYPE_USER_ALIGN, the array type gets it too.
So we can make check_base_type stricter. I was afraid that it might make
us reuse types less often, but measuring showed that we build the same
amount of types with and without the patch, while bootstrapping.
~~
However, the patch broke a few tests on STRICT_ALIGNMENT platforms and
had to be reverted. This is another try. The original patch is kept
unchanged, but I added the finalize_type_size hunk that ought to fix the
STRICT_ALIGNMENT issues.
The problem is that finalize_type_size can clear TYPE_USER_ALIGN on the
main variant of a type, but doesn't clear it on any of the variants.
Then we end up with types which share the same TYPE_MAIN_VARIANT, but
their TYPE_CANONICAL differs and then the usual "canonical types differ
for identical types" follows.
I've created alignas19.C to exercise this scenario. What happens is:
- when parsing the class S we create a type S in xref_tag,
- we see alignas(8) so common_handle_aligned_attribute sets T_U_A in S,
- we parse the member function fn and build_memfn_type creates a copy
of S to add const; this variant has T_U_A set,
- we finish_struct S which calls layout_class_type -> finish_record_type
-> finalize_size_type where we reset T_U_A in S (but const S keeps it),
- finish_non_static_data_member for arr calls maybe_dummy_object with
type = S,
- maybe_dummy_object calls same_type_ignoring_top_level_qualifiers_p
to check if S and TREE_TYPE (current_class_ref), which is const S,
are the same,
- same_type_ignoring_top_level_qualifiers_p creates cv-unqualified
versions of the passed types. Previously we'd use our main variant
S when stripping "const S" of const, but since the T_U_A flags don't
match (check_base_type), we create a new variant S'. Then we crash in
comptypes because S and S' have the same TYPE_MAIN_VARIANT but
different TYPE_CANONICALs.
With my patch we'll clear T_U_A for S's variants too, and then instead
of S' we'll just use S.

It looks cleaner if we can use a vec* directly as a range for the C++11
range-based 'for' loop, without needing to indirect from it, and also works
with null pointers.
The change in cp_parser_late_parsing_default_args is an example of how this
can be used to simplify a simple loop over a vector. Reverse or subset
iteration will require adding range adaptors.
I deliberately didn't format the new overloads for etags since they are
trivial.

Machines that had CLEAR_CACHE_INSN and that would thus issue calls to
__clear_cache with the default call expander, would fail on languages
that did not set up the __clear_cache builtin. This patch arranges
for all languages to set up this builtin.
Machines or multilibs that had ptr_mode != Pmode, such as aarch64 with
