The following example:
void f11(double * restrict z, double * restrict w, double * restrict x,
double * restrict y, int n)
{
for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) {
z[i] = (w[i] > 0) ? w[i] : y[i];
}
}
Generates currently:
ptrue p2.b, all
ld1d z0.d, p0/z, [x1, x2, lsl 3]
fcmgt p1.d, p2/z, z0.d, #0.0
bic p3.b, p2/z, p0.b, p1.b
ld1d z1.d, p3/z, [x3, x2, lsl 3]
and after the previous patches generates:
ptrue p3.b, all
ld1d z0.d, p0/z, [x1, x2, lsl 3]
fcmgt p1.d, p0/z, z0.d, #0.0
fcmgt p2.d, p3/z, z0.d, #0.0
not p1.b, p0/z, p1.b
ld1d z1.d, p1/z, [x3, x2, lsl 3]
where a duplicate comparison is performed for w[i] > 0.
This is because in the vectorizer we're emitting a comparison for both a and ~a
where we just need to emit one of them and invert the other. After this patch
we generate:
ld1d z0.d, p0/z, [x1, x2, lsl 3]
fcmgt p1.d, p0/z, z0.d, #0.0
mov p2.b, p1.b
not p1.b, p0/z, p1.b
ld1d z1.d, p1/z, [x3, x2, lsl 3]
In order to perform the check I have to fully expand the NOT stmts when
recording them as the SSA names for the top level expressions differ but
their arguments don't. e.g. in _31 = ~_34 the value of _34 differs but not
the operands in _34.
But we only do this when the operation is an ordered one because mixing
ordered and unordered expressions can lead to de-optimized code.
Note: This patch series is working incrementally towards generating the most
efficient code for this and other loops in small steps. The mov is
created by postreload when it does a late CSE.

Following my current SVE predicate optimization series a problem has presented
itself in that the way vector masks are generated for masked operations relies
on CSE to share masks efficiently.
The issue however is that masking is done using the & operand and & is
associative and so reassoc decides to reassociate the masked operations.
This makes CSE then unable to CSE an unmasked and a masked operation leading to
duplicate operations being performed.
To counter this we want to add an RPO pass over the vectorized loop body when
vectorization succeeds. This makes it then no longer reliant on the RTL level
CSE.
I have not added a testcase for this as it requires the changes in my patch
series, however the entire series relies on this patch to work so all the
tests there cover it.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* tree-vectorizer.c (vectorize_loops): Do local CSE through RPVN upon
successful vectorization.

When finishing the vector costs, it can be useful to know
what the associated scalar costs were. This allows targets
to read information collected about the original scalar loop
when trying to make a final judgement about the cost of the
vector code.
This patch therefore passes the scalar costs to
vector_costs::finish_cost. The parameter is null for the
scalar costs themselves.

One of the things we want to do on AArch64 is compare vector loops
side-by-side and pick the best one. For some targets, we want this
to be based on issue rates as well as the usual latency-based costs
(at least for loops with relatively high iteration counts).
The current approach to doing this is: when costing vectorisation
candidate A, try to guess what the other main candidate B will look
like and adjust A's latency-based cost up or down based on the likely
difference between A and B's issue rates. This effectively means
that we try to cost parts of B at the same time as A, without actually
being able to see B.
This is needlessly indirect and complex. It was a compromise due
to the code being added (too) late in the GCC 11 cycle, so that
target-independent changes weren't possible.
The target-independent code already compares two candidate loop_vec_infos
side-by-side, so that information about A and B above are available
directly. This patch creates a way for targets to hook into this
comparison.
The AArch64 code can therefore hook into better_main_loop_than_p to
compare issue rates. If the issue rate comparison isn't decisive,
the code can fall back to the normal latency-based comparison instead.

As discussed this splits the analysis loop into two, first settling
on a vector mode used for the main loop and only then analyzing
the epilogue of that for possible vectorization. That makes it
easier to put in support for unrolled main loops.
On the way I've realized some cleanup opportunities, namely caching
n_stmts in vec_info_shared (it's computed by dataref analysis)
avoiding to pass that around and setting/clearing loop->aux
during analysis - try_vectorize_loop_1 will ultimatively set it
on those we vectorize.
This also gets rid of the previously introduced callback in
vect_analyze_loop_1 in favor of making that advance the mode iterator.
I'm now pushing VOIDmode explicitely into the vector_modes array
which makes the re-start on the epilogue side a bit more
straight-forward. Note that will now use auto-detection of the
vector mode in case the main loop used it and we want to try
LOOP_VINFO_EPIL_USING_PARTIAL_VECTORS_P and the first mode from
the target array if not. I've added a comment that says we may
want to make sure we don't try vectorizing the epilogue with a
bigger vector size than the main loop but the situation isn't
very likely to appear in practice I guess (and it was also present
before this change).
In principle this change should not change vectorization decisions
but the way we handled re-analyzing epilogues as main loops makes
me only 99% sure that it does.

The current vector cost interface has a quite a bit of redundancy
built in. Each target that defines its own hooks has to replicate
the basic unsigned[3] management. Currently each target also
duplicates the cost adjustment for inner loops.
This patch instead defines a vector_costs class for holding
the scalar or vector cost and allows targets to subclass it.
There is then only one costing hook: to create a new costs
structure of the appropriate type. Everything else can be
virtual functions, with common concepts implemented in the
base class rather than in each target's derivation.
This might seem like excess C++-ification, but it shaves
~100 LOC. I've also got some follow-on changes that become
significantly easier with this patch. Maybe it could help
with things like weighting blocks based on frequency too.
This will clash with Andre's unrolling patches. His patches
have priority so this patch should queue behind them.
The x86 and rs6000 parts fully convert to a self-contained class.
The equivalent aarch64 changes are more complex, so this patch
just does the bare minimum. A later patch will rework the
aarch64 bits.

This plugs the remaining hole of POINTER_PLUS_EXPR with undefined
overflow. Unfortunately we have to go through some lengths to
not put invariant conversions into the loop body since that confuses
the vectorizers gather/scatter discovery which relies on identifying
an invariant component of plus and minus expressions. We can
emit those in the loop preheader but then we have to accept that
being non-empty when looking for the LOOP_VECTORIZED internal

This adds the capability to analyze the dependence of mixed
pointer/array accesses. The example is from where using a masked
load/store creates the pointer-based access when an otherwise
unconditional access is array based. Other examples would include
accesses to an array mixed with accesses from inlined helpers
that work on pointers.
The idea is quite simple and old - analyze the data-ref indices
as if the reference was pointer-based. The following change does
this by changing dr_analyze_indices to work on the indices
sub-structure and storing an alternate indices substructure in
each data reference. That alternate set of indices is analyzed
lazily by initialize_data_dependence_relation when it fails to
match-up the main set of indices of two data references.
initialize_data_dependence_relation is refactored into a head
and a tail worker and changed to work on one of the indices
structures and thus away from using DR_* access macros which
continue to reference the main indices substructure.
There are quite some vectorization and loop distribution opportunities

This patch follows Martin's suggestion here[1], to support
range based loop for iterating loops, analogously to the

This patch adds support for reusing a main loop's reduction accumulator
in an epilogue loop. This in turn lets the loops share a single piece
of vector->scalar reduction code.
The patch has the following restrictions:
(1) The epilogue reduction can only operate on a single vector
(e.g. ncopies must be 1 for non-SLP reductions, and the group size
must be <= the element count for SLP reductions).
(2) Both loops must use the same vector mode for their accumulators.
This means that the patch is restricted to targets that support
--param vect-partial-vector-usage=1.
(3) The reduction must be a standard “tree code” reduction.
However, these restrictions could be lifted in future. For example,
if the main loop operates on 128-bit vectors and the epilogue loop
operates on 64-bit vectors, we could in future reduce the 128-bit
vector by one stage and use the 64-bit result as the starting point
for the epilogue result.
The patch tries to handle chained SLP reductions, unchained SLP
reductions and non-SLP reductions. It also handles cases in which
the epilogue loop is entered directly (rather than via the main loop)
and cases in which the epilogue loop can be skipped.
vect_get_main_loop_result is a bit more general than the current
patch needs.

The attached testcase ICEs due to a couple of issues.
In the testcase you have two SLP instances that share the majority of their
definition with each other. One tree defines a COMPLEX_MUL sequence and the
other tree a COMPLEX_FMA.
The ice happens because:
1. the refcounts are wrong, in particular the FMA case doesn't correctly count
the references for the COMPLEX_MUL that it consumes.
2. when the FMA is created it incorrectly assumes it can just tear apart the MUL
node that it's consuming. This is wrong and should only be done when there is
no more uses of the node, in which case the vector only pattern is no longer
relevant.
To fix the last part the SLP only pattern reset code was moved into
vect_free_slp_tree which results in cleaner code. I also think it does belong
there since that function knows when there are no more uses of the node and so
the pattern should be unmarked, so when the the vectorizer is inspecting the BB
it doesn't find the now invalid vector only patterns.
The patch also clears the SLP_TREE_REPRESENTATIVE when stores are removed such
that we don't hit an error later trying to free the stmt_vec_info again.
Lastly it also tweaks the results of whether a pattern has been detected or not
to return true when another SLP instance has created a pattern that is only used
by a different instance (due to the trees being unshared).
Instead of ICEing this code now produces
adrp x1, .LANCHOR0
add x2, x1, :lo12:.LANCHOR0
movi v1.2s, 0
mov w0, 0
ldr x4, [x1, #:lo12:.LANCHOR0]

PS. This testcase actually shows that the codegen we get in these cases is not
optimal. It should generate a MUL + ADD instead MUL + FMA.
But that's for GCC 12.

This makes SLP discovery detect backedges by seeding the bst_map with
the node to be analyzed so it can be picked up from recursive calls.
This removes the need to discover backedges in a separate walk.
This enables SLP build to handle PHI nodes in full, continuing
the SLP build to non-backedges. For loop vectorization this
enables outer loop vectorization of nested SLP cycles and for
BB vectorization this enables vectorization of PHIs at CFG merges.
It also turns code generation into a SCC discovery walk to handle
irreducible regions and nodes only reachable via backedges where
we now also fill in vectorized backedge defs.
This requires sanitizing the SLP tree for SLP reduction chains even
more, manually filling the backedge SLP def.
This also exposes the fact that CFG copying (and edge splitting
until I fixed that) ends up with different edge order in the
copy which doesn't play well with the desired 1:1 mapping of
SLP PHI node children and edges for epilogue vectorization.
I've tried to fixup CFG copying here but this really looks
like a dead (or expensive) end there so I've done fixup in
slpeel_tree_duplicate_loop_to_edge_cfg instead for the cases
we can run into.
There's still NULLs in the SLP_TREE_CHILDREN vectors and I'm
not sure it's possible to eliminate them all this stage1 so the
patch has quite some checks for this case all over the place.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu. SPEC CPU 2017
and SPEC CPU 2006 successfully built and tested.

namely by vectorizing the stores but not the common load (and add)
they are feeded with.
Thus with the following patch we change the BB vectorizer from
operating on a single basic-block at a time to consider somewhat
larger regions (but not the whole function yet because of issues
with vector size iteration).
I took the opportunity to remove the fancy region iterations again
now that we operate on BB granularity and in the end need to visit
PHI nodes as well.

This adjusts BB vectorization testcases to look for the number of
SLP subgraphs vectorized rather than for the number of basic blocks
we've found opportunities in because followup patches will play
with the granularity we work on, vectorizing multiple basic blocks
at a time.
Together with this, because I noticed when looking at non-obvious
mismatches, I avoid analyzing group-size 1 SLP instances which
result in pointless V1mode vectorizations.
It might be interesting to work on adding sth like
dg-warning to look for -fopt-info-{optimized,missing} so
we could directly annotate (not) vectorized loops instead of
relying on fragile counts.

This removes STMT_VINFO_NUM_SLP_USES by pushing the setting of

This tries to improve BB vectorization dumps by providing more
precise locations. Currently the vect_location is simply the
very last stmt in a basic-block that has a location. So for
double a[4], b[4];
int x[4], y[4];
void foo()
{
a[0] = b[0]; // line 5
a[1] = b[1];
a[2] = b[2];
a[3] = b[3];
x[0] = y[0]; // line 9
x[1] = y[1];
x[2] = y[2];
x[3] = y[3];
} // line 13
we show the user with -O3 -fopt-info-vec
t.c:13:1: optimized: basic block part vectorized using 16 byte vectors
while with the patch we point to both independently vectorized
opportunities:
t.c:5:8: optimized: basic block part vectorized using 16 byte vectors
t.c:9:8: optimized: basic block part vectorized using 16 byte vectors
there's the possibility that the location regresses in case the
root stmt in the SLP instance has no location. For a SLP subgraph
with multiple entries the location also chooses one entry at random,
not sure in which case we want to dump both.
Still as the plan is to extend the basic-block vectorization
scope from single basic-block to multiple ones this is a first
step to preserve something sensible.
Implementation-wise this makes both costing and code-generation
happen on the subgraphs as analyzed.

As the PR shows, commit r11-2453 exposed one issue that vectorizer
wants to vectorize the epilogue loop and leaves the if-cvt body there,
but later dbgcnt check disables it, the left scalar mask_store
statement causes ICE.
As Richard pointed out in that PR, the dbgcnt is to count original
scalar loops, so this fix is to make it skip the epilogue loops.

This makes {SLP_TREE,STMT_VINFO}_VEC_STMTS a vector of gimple * and
not allocate a stmt_vec_info for vectorizer generated stmts since
this is now possible after removing the only use which was chaining
of vector stmts via STMT_VINFO_RELATED_STMT.
This also removes all stmt_vec_info allocations done for vector
stmts, the remaining ones are for stmts in the scalar IL and for
patterns which are not part of the IL. Thus after this the stmt
UIDs inside a basic-block are suitable for dominance checking
if you ignore (or lazy-fill) UIDs of zero of the vector stmts
inserted during transform. This property is ensured by a new

This gets rid of the linked list of STMT_VINFO_VECT_STMT and
STMT_VINFO_RELATED_STMT in preparation for vectorized stmts no
longer needing a stmt_vec_info (just for this chaining). This
has ripple-down effects in all places we gather vectorized
defs. For this new interfaces are introduced and used
throughout vectorization, simplifying code in a lot of places
and merging it with the SLP way of gathering vectorized
operands. There is vect_get_vec_defs as the new recommended
unified interface and vect_get_vec_defs_for_operand as one
for non-SLP operation. I've resorted to keep the structure
of the code the same where using vect_get_vec_defs would have

After previous patches, it's now possible to make the vectoriser
support multiple vector sizes in the same vector region, using
related_vector_mode to pick the right vector mode for a given
element mode. No port yet takes advantage of this, but I have
a follow-on patch for AArch64.
This patch also seemed like a good opportunity to add some more dump
messages: one to make it clear which vector size/mode was being used
when analysis passed or failed, and another to say when we've decided
to skip a redundant vector size/mode.

* machmode.h (opt_machine_mode::operator==): New function.
(opt_machine_mode::operator!=): Likewise.
* tree-vectorizer.h (vec_info::vector_mode): Update comment.
(get_related_vectype_for_scalar_type): Delete.
(get_vectype_for_scalar_type_and_size): Declare.
* tree-vect-slp.c (vect_slp_bb_region): Print dump messages to say
whether analysis passed or failed, and with what vector modes.
Use related_vector_mode to check whether trying a particular
vector mode would be redundant with the autodetected mode,
and print a dump message if we decide to skip it.
* tree-vect-loop.c (vect_analyze_loop): Likewise.
(vect_create_epilog_for_reduction): Use

* tree-vect-stmts.c (get_vectype_for_scalar_type_and_size): Replace
with...
(get_related_vectype_for_scalar_type): ...this new function.
Take a starting/"prevailing" vector mode rather than a vector size.
Take an optional nunits argument, with the same meaning as for
related_vector_mode. Use related_vector_mode when not
auto-detecting a mode, falling back to mode_for_vector if no
target mode exists.
(get_vectype_for_scalar_type): Update accordingly.
(get_same_sized_vectype): Likewise.
* tree-vectorizer.c (get_vec_alignment_for_array_type): Likewise.

This patch replaces vec_info::vector_size with vec_info::vector_mode,
but for now continues to use it as a way of specifying a single
vector size. This makes it easier for later patches to use
related_vector_mode instead.

The increase_alignment pass was using get_vectype_for_scalar_type
to get the preferred vector type for each array element type.
This has the effect of carrying over the vector size chosen by
the first successful call to all subsequent calls, whereas it seems
more natural to treat each array type independently and pick the
"best" vector type for each element type.
