With -ftrivial-auto-var-init, the address taken auto variable is replaced with a temporary variable during gimplification, and the original auto variable might be eliminated by compiler optimization completely. As a result, the current uninitialized warning analysis cannot get enough information from the IR, therefore the uninitialized warnings for address taken variable cannot be issued based on the current implemenation of -ftrival-auto-var-init. I hoped that I am done with EAF flags related changes, but while looking into the Fortran testcases I noticed that I have designed them in unnecesarily restricted way. I followed the scheme of NOESCAPE and NODIRECTESCAPE which is however the only property tht is naturally transitive. This patch replaces the existing flags by 9 flags: EAF_UNUSED EAF_NO_DIRECT_CLOBBER and EAF_NO_INDIRECT_CLOBBER EAF_NO_DIRECT_READ and EAF_NO_INDIRECT_READ EAF_NO_DIRECT_ESCAPE and EAF_NO_INDIRECT_ESCAPE EAF_NO_DIRECT_READ and EAF_NO_INDIRECT_READ So I have removed the unified EAF_DIRECT flag and made each of the flags to come in direct and indirect variant. Newly the indirect variant is not implied by direct (well except for escape but it is not special cased in the code) Consequently we can analyse i.e. the case where function reads directly and clobber indirectly as in the following testcase: struct wrap { void **array; }; __attribute__ ((noinline)) void write_array (struct wrap *ptr) { ptr->array[0]=0; } int test () { void *arrayval; struct wrap w = {&arrayval}; write_array (&w); return w.array == &arrayval; } This is pretty common in array descriptors and also C++ pointer wrappers or structures containing pointers to arrays. Other advantage is that !binds_to_current_def_p functions we can still track the fact that the value is not clobbered indirectly while previously we implied EAF_DIRECT for all three cases. Finally the propagation becomes more regular and I hope easier to understand because the flags are handled in a symmetric way. In tree-ssa-structalias I now produce "callarg" var_info as before and if necessary also "indircallarg" for the indirect accesses. Initialize automatic variables with either a pattern or with zeroes to increase the security and predictability of a program by preventing uninitialized memory disclosure and use. GCC still considers an automatic variable that doesn't have an explicit initializer as uninitialized, -Wuninitialized will still report warning messages on such automatic variables. With this option, GCC will also initialize any padding of automatic variables that have structure or union types to zeroes. We can improve uninit warnings from the early pass by looking at PHI arguments on fallthru edges that are uninitialized and have uses that are before a possible loop exit. This catches some cases earlier that we'd only warn in a more confusing way after early inlining as seen by testcase adjustments. It introduces FAIL: gcc.dg/uninit-23.c (test for excess errors) where we additionally warn gcc.dg/uninit-23.c:21:13: warning: 't4' is used uninitialized [-Wuninitialized] which I think is OK even if it's not obvious that the new warning is an improvement when you look at the obvious source. 2018-08-20Add support for grouping of related diagnostics (PR other/84889)David Malcolm1-0/+1
We often emit logically-related groups of diagnostics. A relatively simple case is this: if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); where the "note" diagnostic issued by the "inform" call is guarded by the -Wmultistatement_macros warning. More complicated examples can be seen in the C++ frontend, where e.g. print_z_candidates can lead to numerous "note" diagnostics being emitted. I'm looking at various ways to improve how we handle such related diagnostics, but, prior to this patch, there was no explicit relationship between these diagnostics: the diagnostics subsystem had no way of "knowing" that these were related. This patch introduces a simple way to group the diagnostics: an auto_diagnostic_group class: all diagnostics emitted within the lifetime of an auto_diagnostic_group instance are logically grouped. Hence in the above example, the two diagnostics can be grouped by simply adding an auto_diagnostic_group instance: auto_diagnostic_group d; if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); Some more awkard cases are of the form: if (some_condition && warning_at (...) && more_conditions) inform (...); which thus need restructuring to: if (some_condition) { auto_diagnostic_group d; warning_at (...); if (more_conditions) inform (...); } so that the lifetime of the auto_diagnostic_group groups the warning_at and the inform call. Nesting is handled by simply tracking a nesting depth within the diagnostic_context.: all diagnostics are treated as grouped until the final auto_diagnostic_group is popped. diagnostic.c uses this internally, so that all diagnostics are part of a group - those that are "by themselves" are treated as being part of a group with one element. The diagnostic_context gains optional callbacks for displaying the start of a group (when the first diagnostic is emitted within it), and the end of a group (for when the group was non-empty); these callbacks are unused by default, but a test plugin demonstrates them (and verifies that the machinery is working). As noted above, I'm looking at various ways to use the grouping to improve how we output the diagnostics. The wide_int routines allow things like: wi::add (t, 1) to add 1 to an INTEGER_CST T in its native precision. But we also have: wi::to_offset (t) // Treat T as an offset_int wi::to_widest (t) // Treat T as a widest_int Recently we also gained: wi::to_wide (t, prec) // Treat T as a wide_int in preccision PREC This patch therefore requires: wi::to_wide (t) when operating on INTEGER_CSTs in their native precision. This is just as efficient, and makes it clearer that a deliberate choice is being made to treat the tree as a wide_int in its native precision. This also removes the inconsistency that a) INTEGER_CSTs in their native precision can be used without an accessor but must use wi:: functions instead of C++ operators b) the other forms need an explicit accessor but the result can be used with C++ operators.
