All users of path_range_query are currently allocating a gimple_ranger

We have much more thorough restrictions, that are shared between both
threader implementations, in the registry. I've been meaning to
remove the backward threader one, since it's only purpose was reducing
the search space. Previously there was a small time penalty for its
removal, but with the various patches in the past month, it looks like
the removal is a wash performance wise.
This catches 8 more jump threads in the backward threader in my suite.
Presumably, because we disallowed all loop crossing, whereas the
registry restrictions allow some crossing (if we exit the loop, etc).

Imports are our nomenclature for external SSA names to a block that
are used to calculate the outgoing edges for said block. For example,
in the following snippet:
<bb 2> :
_1 = b_10 == block_11;
_2 = b_10 != -1;
_3 = _1 & _2;
if (_3 != 0)
goto <bb 3>; [INV]
else
goto <bb 5>; [INV]
...the imports to the block are b_10 and block_11 since they are both
needed to calculate _3.
The path solver takes a bitmap of imports in addition to the path
itself. This sets up the number of SSA names to be on the lookout
for, while resolving the final conditional.
Calculating these imports was initially done in the threader, since it
was the only user of the path solver. With new clients, it has become
obvious that populating the imports should be a task for the path
solver, so it can be shared among the clients.
This patch moves the import code to the solver, making both the solver
and the threader simpler in the process. This is because intent is
clearer and some duplicate code was removed.
This reshuffling had the net effect of giving us a handful of new
threads through my suite of .ii files (125). This was unexpected, but
welcome nevertheless. There is no performance difference in callgrind
over the same suite.

The goal with these sets of patches is to improve the detailed dumps for
the threader, as I hope we eventually reach the point when I'm not
the only one looking at these dumps ;-).
This patch adds candidate paths to the detailed threading dumps to make it
easier to see the decisions the threader makes. With it we can now
grep for the discovery logic in action:
$ grep ^path: a.ii.*thread*
a.ii.034t.ethread:path: 4->5->xx REJECTED
a.ii.034t.ethread:path: 3->5->8 SUCCESS
a.ii.034t.ethread:path: 4->5->6 SUCCESS
a.ii.034t.ethread:path: 0->2->xx REJECTED
a.ii.034t.ethread:path: 0->2->xx REJECTED

a.ii.111t.threadfull1:path: 16->22->23->xx REJECTED (unreachable)
In addition to this, if --param=threader-debug=all is used, one can see
the entire chain of events leading up to the ultimate threading
decision:

Chasing down stage3 miscomparisons is never fun, and having no way to
distinguish between jump threads registered by a particular
pass, is even harder. This patch adds debug counters for the individual
back threading passes. I've left the ethread pass alone, as that one is
usually benign, but we could easily add it if needed.
The fact that we can only pass one boolean argument to the passes

This patch upgrades the pre-VRP threading passes to fully resolving
backward threaders, and removes the post-VRP threading passes altogether.
With it, we reduce the number of threaders in our pipeline from 9 to 7.
This will leave DOM as the only forward threader client. When the ranger
can handle floats, we should be able to upgrade the pre-DOM threaders to
fully resolving threaders and kill the embedded DOM threader.
The numbers are as follows:
prev: # threads in backward + vrp-threaders = 92624
now: # threads in backward threaders = 94275
Gain: +1.78%
prev: # total threads: 189495
now: # total threads: 193714
Gain: +2.22%
The numbers are not as great as my initial proposal, but I've
recently pushed all the work that got us to this point ;-).
And... the compilation improves by 1.32%!
There's a regression on uninit-pred-7_a.c that I've yet to look at. I
want to make sure it's not a missing thread. If it is, I'll create a PR
and own it.
Also, the tree-ssa/phi_on_compare-*.c tests have all regressed. This
seems to be some special case the forward threader handles that the
backward threader does not (edge_forwards_cmp_to_conditional_jump*).
I haven't dug deep to see if this is solveable within our
infrastructure, but a cursory look shows that even though the VRP
threader threads this, the *.optimized dump ends with more conditional
jumps than without the optimization. I'd like to punt on this for
now, because DOM actually catches this through its lone use of the
forward threader (I've adjusted the tests). However, we will need to
address this sooner or later, if indeed it's still improving the final
assembly.

We've been essentially using find_taken_edge_switch_expr() in the
backward threader, but this is suboptimal because said function only
works with singletons. VRP has a much smarter find_case_label_range
that works with ranges.

The backward threader keeps a hash of visited blocks to avoid crossing
the same block twice. Interestingly, we haven't been checking it for
the final block out of the path. This may be inherited from the old

upcoming changes enabling the fully resolving threader, it gets
tripped often enough to cause wrong code to be generated.

The code that threads incoming paths to a PHI is duplicating what we
do generically in find_paths_to_names. This shortcoming is actually
one of the reasons we aren't threading all possible paths into a PHI.
For example, we give up after finding one threadable path, but some
PHIs have multiple threadable paths:
// x_5 = PHI <10(4), 20(5), ...>
// if (x_5 > 5)
Addressing this not only fixes the oversight, but simplifies the
PHI handling code, since we can consider the PHI fully resolved upon
return.
Interestingly, for ssa-thread-12.c the main thread everything was
hinging on was unreachable. With this patch, we call
maybe_register_path() earlier. In doing so, the solver realizes
that any path starting with 4->8 is unreachable and can be avoided.
This caused the cascade of threadable paths that depended on this
to no longer happen. Since threadable paths in thread[34] was the only
thing this test was testing, there's no longer anything to test. Neat!

Sometimes we can solve a candidate path without having to recurse
further back. This can mostly happen in fully resolving mode, because
we can ask the ranger what the range on entry to the path is, but
there's no reason this can't always apply. This one-liner removes
the fully-resolving restriction.
I'm tickled pink to see how many things we now get quite early
in the compilation. I actually had to disable jump threading entirely
for a few tests because the early threader was catching things
disturbingly early. Also, as Richi predicted, I saw a lot of pre-VRP
cleanups happening.
I was going to commit this as obvious, but I think the test changes
merit discussion.
We've been playing games with gcc.dg/tree-ssa/ssa-thread-11.c for quite
some time. Every time a threading pass gets smarter, we push the
check further down the pipeline. We've officially run out of dumb
threading passes to disable ;-). In the last year we've gone up from a
handful of threads, to 34 threads with the current combination of
options. I doubt this is testing anything useful anymore, so I've
removed it.
Similarly for gcc.dg/tree-ssa/ssa-dom-thread-4.c. We used to thread 3
jump threads, but they were disallowed because of loop rotation. Then
we started catching more jump threads in VRP2 threading so we tested
there. With this patch though, we triple the number of threads found
from 11 to 31. I believe this test has outlived its usefulness, and
I've removed it. Note that even though we have these outrageous
possibilities for this test, the block copier ultimately chops them
down (23 survive though).

The removal of --param=max-fsm-thread-length is causing code
explosion. I thought that --param=max-fsm-thread-path-insns was a
better gague for path profitability than raw BB length, but it turns
out that we don't take into account PHIs when estimating the number of
statements.
In this PR, we have a sequence of very large PHIs that have us
traversing extremely large paths that blow up the compilation.
We could fix this a couple of different ways. We could avoid
traversing more than a certain number of PHI arguments, or ignore
large PHIs altogether. The old implementation certainly had this
knob, and we could cut things off before we even got to the ranger.
We could also adjust the instruction estimation to take into account
PHIs, but I'm sure we'll mess something else in the process ;-).
The easiest thing to do is just restore the knob.
At a later time we could tweak this further, for instance,
disregarding empty blocks in the count. BTW, this is the reason I
didn't chop things off in the lowlevel registry for all threaders: the
forward threader can't really explore too deep paths, but it could
theoretically get there while threading over empty blocks.
This fixes 102814, 102852, and I bet it solves the Linux kernel cross
compile issue.

jump threaders. The first suspect will probably be enabling fully
resolving in the backward threader pass immediately preceeding VRP2,
and removing the VRP2 threader pass. Now that VRP and the backward
threader are sharing a solver, and most of the threads get handcuffed
by cancel_threads(), we should have a variety of scenarios to try.
In the process, I have cleaned up things to make it trivial to see
what the difference between the 3 variants are (early jump
threading, quick jump threading without resolving SSAs, and fully
resolving jump threading). Since I moved stuff around, it's probably
easier to just look at the last section in tree-ssa-threadbackward to
see how it's all laid out.
No functional changes as the new pass hasn't been added to the
pipeline.

The path solver runs in two modes: a quick mode which assumes any unknown
SSA names are VARYING, and a fully resolving mode using the ranger.
The backward threader currently uses the quick mode, because the fully
resolving mode was not available initially. Since we now have the ability
in the solver (used by the hybrid threader), I thought it'd be useful to
have the knob for when the time comes.
Note that enabling the fully resolving mode will require some experimenting,
as enabling it would likely render other jump threading passes irrelevant
(VRP threading comes to mind).
There should be no functional changes as the resolver is set to false.

The new backward threader makes some of the --param knobs used to
control it questionable at best or no longer applicable at worst.
The fsm-maximum-phi-arguments param is unused and can be removed.
The max-fsm-thread-length param is block based which is a bit redundant,
since we already restrict paths based on instruction estimates.
The max-fsm-thread-paths restricts the total number of threadable paths
in a function. We probably don't need this. Besides, the forward
threader has no such restriction.

There's a limitation in the path discovery bits in the backward
threader that I ran into recently and I'd like to document it so we
don't lose track of it.
Basically we stop looking if we find a threadable path through a PHI,
without taking into account that there could be multiple
paths through a PHI that resolve the path. For example:
x_5 = PHI <10(4), 20(5), ...>
if (x_5 > 5)
I don't remember how we ended up skipping this, but it could existing
behavior from the old bits. It probably skipped multiple threads
through a PHI since the generic copier couldn't re-using existing
threading paths anyhow.
Documenting for later fixing.

Last year I mentioned that -fthread-jumps was being ignored by the
majority of our jump threading passes, and Jeff said he'd be in favor
of fixing this.
This patch remedies the situation, but it does change existing behavior.
Currently -fthread-jumps is only enabled for -O2, -O3, and -Os. This
means that even if we restricted all jump threading passes with
-fthread-jumps, DOM jump threading would still seep through since it
runs at -O1.
I propose this patch, but it does mean that DOM jump threading would
have to be explicitly enabled with -O1 -fthread-jumps.

Now that the jump thread back registry has been split into the generic
copier and the custom (old) copier, it becomes trivial to remove the
FSM bits from the jump threaders.
First, there's no need for an EDGE_FSM_THREAD type. The only reason
we were looking at the threading type was to determine what type of
copier to use, and now that the copier has been split, there's no need
to even look. However, there is one check in register_jump_thread
where we verify that only the generic copier can thread through
back-edges. I've removed that check in favor of a flag passed to the
constructor.
I've also removed all the FSM references from the code and tests.
Interestingly, some tests weren't even testing the right thing. They
were testing for "FSM" which would catch jump thread paths as well as
the backward threader *failing* on registering a path. *big eye roll*
The only remaining code that was actually checking for EDGE_FSM_THREAD
was adjust_paths_after_duplication, and the checks could be written
without looking at the edge type at all. For the record, the code
there is horrible: it's convoluted, hard to read, and doesn't have any
tests. I'd smack myself if I could go back in time.
All that remains are the FSM references in the --param's themselves.
I think we should s/fsm/threader/, since I envision a day when we can
share the cost basis code between the threaders. However, I don't
know what the proper procedure is for renaming existing compiler
options.
By the way, param_fsm_maximum_phi_arguments is no longer relevant
after the rewrite. We can nuke that one right away.

In an attempt to refactor thread_through_all_blocks(), I've realized
that there is a mess of code dealing with coexisting forward and
backward thread types. However, this is an impossible scenario, as
the registry contains either forward/old-style threads, or backward
threads (EDGE_FSM_THREADs), never both.
The fact that both types of threads cannot coexist, simplifies the
code considerably. For that matter, it splits things up nicely
because there are some common bits that can go into a base class, and
some differing code that can go into derived classes.
Diving things in this way makes it very obvious which parts belong in
the old-style copier and which parts belong to the generic copier.
Doing all this provided some nice cleanups, as well as fixing a latent
bug in adjust_paths_after_duplication.
The diff is somewhat hard to read, so perhaps looking at the final
output would be easier.
A general overview of what this patch achieves can be seen by just
looking at this simplified class layout:
// Abstract class for the jump thread registry.
class jt_path_registry
{
public:
jt_path_registry ();
virtual ~jt_path_registry ();
bool register_jump_thread (vec<jump_thread_edge *> *);
bool thread_through_all_blocks (bool peel_loop_headers);
jump_thread_edge *allocate_thread_edge (edge e, jump_thread_edge_type t);
vec<jump_thread_edge *> *allocate_thread_path ();
protected:
vec<vec<jump_thread_edge *> *> m_paths;
unsigned long m_num_threaded_edges;
private:
virtual bool update_cfg (bool peel_loop_headers) = 0;
};
// Forward threader path registry using a custom BB copier.
class fwd_jt_path_registry : public jt_path_registry
{
public:
fwd_jt_path_registry ();
~fwd_jt_path_registry ();
void remove_jump_threads_including (edge);
private:
bool update_cfg (bool peel_loop_headers) override;
void mark_threaded_blocks (bitmap threaded_blocks);
bool thread_block_1 (basic_block, bool noloop_only, bool joiners);
bool thread_block (basic_block, bool noloop_only);
bool thread_through_loop_header (class loop *loop,
bool may_peel_loop_headers);
class redirection_data *lookup_redirection_data (edge e, enum insert_option);
hash_table<struct removed_edges> *m_removed_edges;
hash_table<redirection_data> *m_redirection_data;
};
// Backward threader path registry using a generic BB copier.
class back_jt_path_registry : public jt_path_registry
{
private:
bool update_cfg (bool peel_loop_headers) override;
void adjust_paths_after_duplication (unsigned curr_path_num);
bool duplicate_thread_path (edge entry, edge exit, basic_block *region,
unsigned n_region, unsigned current_path_no);
bool rewire_first_differing_edge (unsigned path_num, unsigned edge_num);
};
That is, the forward and backward bits have been completely split,
while deriving from a base class for the common functionality.
Most everything is mechanical, but there are a few gotchas:
a) back_jt_path_registry::update_cfg(), which contains the backward
threading specific bits, is rather simple, since most of the code in
the original thread_through_all_blocks() only applied to the forward
threader: removed edges, mark_threaded_blocks,
thread_through_loop_header, the copy tables (*).
(*) The back threader has its own copy tables in
duplicate_thread_path.
b) In some cases, adjust_paths_after_duplication() was commoning out
so many blocks that it was removing the initial EDGE_FSM_THREAD
marker. I've fixed this.
c) AFAICT, when run from the forward threader,
thread_through_all_blocks() attempts to remove threads starting with
an edge already seen, but it would never see anything because the loop
doing the checking only has a visited_starting_edges.contains(), and
no corresponding visited_starting_edges.add(). The add() method in
thread_through_all_blocks belongs to the backward threading bits, and
as I've explained, both types cannot coexist. I've removed the checks
in the forward bits since they don't appear to do anything. If this
was an oversight, and we want to avoid threading already seen edges in
the forward threader, I can move this functionality to the base class.
Ultimately I would like to move all the registry code to
tree-ssa-threadregistry.*. I've avoided this in this patch to aid in
review.
My apologies for this longass explanation, but I want to make sure
we're covering all of our bases.
Tested on x86-64 Linux by a very tedious process of moving chunks
around, running "make check-gcc RUNTESTFLAGS=tree-ssa.exp", and
repeating ad-nauseum. And of course, by running a full bootstrap and
tests.
OK?

The motivation for this patch was enabling the use of global ranges in
the path solver, but this caused certain properties of loops being
destroyed which made subsequent loop optimizations to fail.
Consequently, this patch's mail goal is to disable jump threading
involving the latch until after loop optimizations have run.
As can be seen in the test adjustments, we mostly shift the threading
from the early threaders (ethread, thread[12] to the late threaders
thread[34]). I have nuked some of the early notes in the testcases
that came as part of the jump threader rewrite. They're mostly noise
now.
Note that we could probably relax some other restrictions in
profitable_path_p when loop optimizations have completed, but it would
require more testing, and I'm hesitant to touch more things than needed
at this point. I have added a reminder to the function to keep this
in mind.
Finally, perhaps as a follow-up, we should apply the same restrictions to
the forward threader. At some point I'd like to combine the cost models.

Keeping track of unreachable calculations while traversing a path is
useful to determine edge reachability, among other things. We've been
doing this ad-hoc in the backwards threader, so this provides a cleaner
way of accessing the information.
This patch also makes it easier to compare different threading
implementations, in some upcoming work. For example, it's currently
difficult to gague how good we're doing compared to the forward threader,
because it can thread paths that are obviously unreachable. This
provides a way of discarding those paths.
Note that I've opted to keep unreachable_path_p() out-of-line, because I

The registry's thread_through_all_blocks() has a may_peel_loop_headers
argument. When refactoring the backward threader code, I removed this
argument for the local passthru method because it was always TRUE. This
may not necessarily be true in the future, if the backward threader is
called from another context. This patch removes the default definition,
in favor of an argument that is exactly the same as the identically
named function in tree-ssa-threadupdate.c. I think this also makes it
less confusing when looking at both methods across the source base.

This patch adds debugging helpers to the backwards threader. I have
also noticed that profitable_path_p() can bail early on paths that
crosses loops and leave the dump of blocks incomplete. Fixed as
well.
Unfortunately the new methods cannot be marked const, because we call
the solver's dump which is not const. I believe this was because the
ranger dump calls m_cache.block_range(). This could probably use a
cleanup at a later time.

This is a rewrite of the backwards threader with a ranger based solver.
The code is divided into two parts: the path solver in
gimple-range-path.*, and the path discovery bits in
tree-ssa-threadbackward.c.
The legacy code is still available with --param=threader-mode=legacy,
but will be removed shortly after.

This refactors the registry and the profitability code from the
backwards threader into two separate classes. It cleans up the code,
and makes it easier for alternate implementations to share code.

This is an overall refactor of the jump threader, both for the low level
bits in tree-ssa-threadupdate.* and the high level bits in
tree-ssa-threadedge.*.
There should be no functional changes.
Some of the benefits of the refactor are:
a) Eliminates some icky global state (for example the x_vr_values hack).
b) Provides some semblance of an API for the threader.
c) Makes it clearer to see what parts are from the high level
threader, and what parts belong in the low level path registry and
BB threading mechanism.
d) Avoids passing a ton of variables around.
e) Provides for easier sharing with the backward threader.
f) Merged simplify stmt code in VRP and DOM as they were nearly
identical.
This has been bootstrapped and regression tested on x86-64 Linux.
Jeff had also been testing this path as part of his Fedora throughout the
off-season.

__builtin_constant_p.
Linux Kernel (specifically, drivers/leds/trigger/ledtrig-cpu.c) build
with GCC 10 fails on s390 with "impossible constraint".
Explanation by Jeff Law:
```
So what we have is a b_c_p at the start of an if-else chain. Subsequent
tests on the "true" arm of the the b_c_p test may throw us off the
constant path (because the constants are out of range). Once all the
tests are passed (it's constant and the constant is in range) the true
arm's terminal block has a special asm that requires a constant
argument. In the case where we get to the terminal block on the true
arm, the argument to the b_c_p is used as the constant argument to the
special asm.
At first glace jump threading seems to be doing the right thing. Except
that we end up with two paths to that terminal block with the special
asm, one for each of the two constant arguments to the b_c_p call.
Naturally since that same value is used in the asm, we have to introduce
a PHI to select between them at the head of the terminal block. Now
the argument in the asm is no longer constant and boom we fail.
```
Fix by disallowing __builtin_constant_p on threading paths.

2020-06-03 Ilya Leoshkevich <iii@linux.ibm.com>
* tree-ssa-threadbackward.c (thread_jumps::profitable_jump_thread_path):
