r8-3988-g356fcc67fba52b added code to turn return statements into __builtin_unreachable
calls inside noreturn functions but only while optimizing. Since -funreachable-traps
was added (r13-1204-gd68d3664253696), it is a good idea to move over to using
__builtin_unreachable (and the trap version with this option which defaults at -O0 and -0g)
instead of just a follow through even at -O0.
This also fixes a regression when inlining a noreturn function that returns at -O0 (due to always_inline)
as we would get an empty bb which has no successor edge instead of one with a call to __builtin_unreachable.
I also noticed there was no testcase testing the warning about __builtin_return inside a noreturn function
so I added a testcase there.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu.

into __builtin_unreachable calls.

The problem here is there was a compare debug since the discriminators
would still take into account debug statements. For the edge we would look
at the first statement after the labels and that might have been a debug statement.
So we need to skip over debug statements otherwise we could get different
discriminators # with and without -g.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu with no regressions.
PR middle-end/113546
gcc/ChangeLog:
* tree-cfg.cc (first_non_label_stmt): Rename to ...
(first_non_label_nondebug_stmt): This and use gsi_start_nondebug_after_labels_bb.

This patch adds basic support for three new tree node types that will
be used in subsequent patches to support OpenMP metadirectives and
dynamic selectors.
OMP_METADIRECTIVE is the internal representation of parsed OpenMP
metadirective constructs. It's produced by the front ends and is expanded
during gimplification.
OMP_NEXT_VARIANT is used as a "magic cookie" for late resolution of
variant constructs that cannot be fully resolved during
gimplification, used to set the controlling variable of a switch
statement that branches to the next alternative once the candidate
list can be filtered and sorted. These nodes are expanded into
constants in the ompdevlow pass. In some gimple passes, they need to
be treated as constants.
OMP_TARGET_DEVICE_MATCHES is a similar "magic cookie" used to resolve
the target_device dynamic selector. It is wrapped in an OpenMP target
construct, and can be resolved to a constant in the ompdevlow pass.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* doc/generic.texi (OpenMP): Document OMP_METADIRECTIVE,
OMP_NEXT_VARIANT, and OMP_TARGET_DEVICE_MATCHES.
* fold-const.cc (operand_compare::hash_operand): Ignore
the new nodes.
* gimple-expr.cc (is_gimple_val): Allow OMP_NEXT_VARIANT
and OMP_TARGET_DEVICE_MATCHES.
* gimple.cc (get_gimple_rhs_num_ops): OMP_NEXT_VARIANT and
OMP_TARGET_DEVICE_MATCHES are both GIMPLE_SINGLE_RHS.
* tree-cfg.cc (tree_node_can_be_shared): Allow sharing of
OMP_NEXT_VARIANT.
* tree-inline.cc (remap_gimple_op_r): Ignore subtrees of
OMP_NEXT_VARIANT.
* tree-pretty-print.cc (dump_generic_node): Handle OMP_METADIRECTIVE,
OMP_NEXT_VARIANT, and OMP_TARGET_DEVICE_MATCHES.
* tree-ssa-operands.cc (operands_scanner::get_expr_operands):
Ignore operands of OMP_NEXT_VARIANT and OMP_TARGET_DEVICE_MATCHES.

This is v2 of the patch; v1 was here:
https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2024-June/655541.html
Changed in v2:
* added a new TARGET_DOCUMENTATION_NAME hook for figuring out which
documentation URL to use when there are multiple per-target docs,
such as for __attribute__((interrupt)); implemented this for all
targets that have target-specific attributes
* moved attribute_urlifier and its support code to a new
gcc-attribute-urlifier.cc since it needs to use targetm for the
above; gcc-urlifier.o is used by the driver.
* fixed extend.texi so that some attributes that failed to appear in
attr-urls.def now do so (affected nvptx "kernel" and "shared" attrs)
* regenerated attr-urls.def for the above fix, and bringing in
attributes added since v1 of the patch
In r14-5118-gc5db4d8ba5f3de I added a mechanism to automatically add
documentation URLs to quoted strings in diagnostics.
In r14-6920-g9e49746da303b8 I added a mechanism to generate URLs for
mentions of command-line options in quoted strings in diagnostics.
This patch does a similar thing for attributes. It adds a new Python 3
script to scrape the generated HTML looking for documentation of
attributes, and uses this to (re)generate a new gcc/attr-urls.def file.
Running "make regenerate-attr-urls" after rebuilding the HTML docs will
regenerate gcc/attr-urls.def in the source directory.
The patch uses this to optionally add doc URLs for attributes in any
diagnostic emitted during the lifetime of a auto_urlify_attributes
instance, and adds such instances everywhere that a diagnostic refers
to a diagnostic within quotes (based on grepping the source tree
for references to attributes in strings and in code).
For example, given:
$ ./xgcc -B. -S ../../src/gcc/testsuite/gcc.dg/attr-access-2.c
../../src/gcc/testsuite/gcc.dg/attr-access-2.c:14:16: warning:
attribute ‘access(read_write, 2, 3)’ positional argument 2 conflicts
with previous designation by argument 1 [-Wattributes]
with this patch the quoted text `access(read_write, 2, 3)'
automatically gains the URL for our docs for "access":
https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Common-Function-Attributes.html#index-access-function-attribute
in a sufficiently modern terminal.
Like r14-6920-g9e49746da303b8 this avoids the Makefile target
depending on the generated HTML, since a missing URL is a minor
problem, whereas requiring all users to build HTML docs seems more
involved. Doing so also avoids Python 3 as a build requirement for
everyone, but instead just for developers addding attributes.
Like the options, we could add a CI test for this.
The patch gathers both general and target-specific attributes.
For example, the function attribute "interrupt" has 19 URLs within our
docs: one common, and 18 target-specific ones.
The patch adds a new target hook used when selecting the most
appropriate one.

Since diagnostic.h is included in over half of the sources, requiring to `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY`
does not make sense. Instead lets unconditionally include memory in system.h.
The majority of this patch is just removing `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` from the sources which currently
have it.
This should also fix the mingw build issue but I have not tried it.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu.

While testing future 64-bit location_t support, I ran into an
-fcompare-debug issue that was traced back here. Despite the name,
next_discriminator_for_locus() is meant to take an integer line number
argument, not a location_t. There is one call site which has been passing a
location_t instead. For the most part that is harmless, although in case
there are two CALL stmts on the same line with different location_t, it may
fail to generate a unique discriminator where it should. If/when location_t
changes to be 64-bit, however, it will produce an -fcompare-debug
failure. Fix it by passing the line number rather than the location_t.
I am not aware of a testcase that demonstrates any observable wrong
behavior, but the file debug/pr53466.C is an example where the discriminator
assignment is indeed different before and after this change.

* tree-cfg.cc (assign_discriminators): Fix incorrect value passed to
next_discriminator_for_locus().

I've tried to build stage3 with
-Wleading-whitespace=blanks -Wtrailing-whitespace=blank -Wno-error=leading-whitespace=blanks -Wno-error=trailing-whitespace=blank
added to STRICT_WARN and that expectably resulted in about
2744 unique trailing whitespace warnings and 124837 leading whitespace
warnings when excluding *.md files (which obviously is in big part a
generator issue). Others from that are generator related, I think those
need to be solved later.
The following patch just fixes up the easy case (trailing whitespace),
which could be easily automated:
for i in `find . -name \*.h -o -name \*.cc -o -name \*.c | xargs grep -l '[ ]$' | grep -v testsuite/`; do sed -i -e 's/[ ]*$//' $i; done
I've excluded files which I knew are obviously generated or go FE.
Is there anything else we'd want to avoid the changes?
Due to patch size, I've split it between gcc/ part (this patch)
and rest (include/, libiberty/, libgcc/, libcpp/, libstdc++-v3/).

My forthcoming patches for PR other/116613 make much more use of
cloning of pretty_printers than before, so it makes sense as a
preliminary patch for the result of pretty_printer::clone to be a
std::unique_ptr, rather than add more manual uses of "delete".
On doing so, I noticed various other places where naked new/delete is
used for run-time configuration of diagnostics:
* the output format (text vs SARIF)
* client data hooks
* the option manager
* the URLifier
Hence this patch also makes use of std::unique_ptr and ::make_unique for
managing such client policy classes, and also for diagnostic_buffer's
per-format implementations.
Unfortunately we can't directly include <memory> in our internal headers
but instead any of our TUs that make use of std::unique_ptr must #define
INCLUDE_MEMORY before including system.h.
Hence the bulk of this patch is taken up with adding a define of
INCLUDE_MEMORY to hundreds of source files: everything that includes
diagnostic.h or pretty-print.h (and thus anything transitively such as
includers of lto-wrapper.h, c-tree.h, cp-tree.h and rtl-ssa.h).
Thanks to Gaius Mulley for the parts of the patch that regenerated the
m2 files.

Enable the tailcall optimization for non optimizing builds,
but in this case only checks calls that have the musttail attribute set.
This makes musttail work without optimization.
This is done with a new late musttail pass that is only active when
not optimizing. The new pass relies on tree-cfg to discover musttails.
This avoids a ~0.8% compiler run time penalty at -O0.

When I was checking to making sure that all of the bugs dealing
with the case where gimple_can_duplicate_bb_p would return false was fixed,
I noticed that the code which was checking if a call statement was
returns_twice was checking all call statements rather than just the
last statement. Since calling gimple_call_flags has a small non-zero
overhead due to a few string comparison, removing the uses of it
can have a small performance improvement. In the case of returns_twice
functions calls, will always end the basic-block due to the check in
stmt_can_terminate_bb_p (and others). So checking only the last statement
is a small optimization and will be safe.
Bootstrapped and tested pon x86_64-linux-gnu with no regressions.

When CFG cleanup removes a backedge we have to be more careful with
loop update. In particular we need to clear niter info and estimates
and if we remove the last backedge of a loop we have to also mark
it for removal to prevent a following basic block merging to associate
loop info with an unrelated header.

While translation of the verifier messages is questionable, that case is
something that ideally should never happen except to gcc developers
and so pressumably English should be fine, we use error etc. APIs and
those imply translatations and some translators translate it.
The following patch adjusts the code such that we don't emit
appel returns_twice est not first dans le bloc de base 33
in French (i.e. 2 English word in the middle of a French message).
Similarly Swedish or Ukrainian.
Note, the German translator did differentiate between these verifier
messages vs. normal user facing and translated it to:
"Interner Fehler: returns_twice call is %s in basic block %d"
so just a German prefix before English message.

* tree-cfg.cc (gimple_verify_flow_info): Make the misplaced
returns_twice diagnostics translatable.

The following patch attempts to implement P2809R3, which has been voted
in as a DR.
The middle-end has its behavior documented:
'-ffinite-loops'
Assume that a loop with an exit will eventually take the exit and
not loop indefinitely. This allows the compiler to remove loops
that otherwise have no side-effects, not considering eventual
endless looping as such.
This option is enabled by default at '-O2' for C++ with -std=c++11
or higher.
So, the following patch attempts to detect trivial infinite loops by detecting
trivially empty loops, if their condition is not INTEGER_CST (that case is
handled by the middle-end right already) trying to constant evaluate with
mce=true their condition and if it evaluates to true (and -ffinite-loops and
not processing_template_decl) wraps the condition into an ANNOTATE_EXPR which
tells the middle-end that the loop shouldn't be loop->finite_p despite
-ffinite-loops).
Furthermore, the patch adds -Wtautological-compare warnings for loop
conditions containing std::is_constant_evaluated(), either if those
always evaluate to true, or always evaluate to false, or will evaluate
to true just when checking if it is trivial infinite loop (and if in non-constexpr
function also say that it will evaluate to false otherwise).
The user is doing something weird in all those cases.

Attaching a pragma to a loop which has a complex condition often gets the pragma
dropped. e.g.
#pragma GCC novector
while (i < N && parse_tables_n--)
before lowering this is represented as:
if (ANNOTATE_EXPR <i <= 305 && parse_tables_n-- != 0, no-vector>) ...
But after lowering the condition is broken appart and attached to the final
component of the expression:
if (parse_tables_n.2_2 != 0) goto <D.4456>; else goto <D.4453>;
<D.4456>:
iftmp.1D.4452 = 1;
goto <D.4454>;
<D.4453>:
iftmp.1D.4452 = 0;
<D.4454>:
D.4451 = .ANNOTATE (iftmp.1D.4452, 2, 0);
if (D.4451 != 0) goto <D.4442>; else goto <D.4440>;
<D.4440>:
and it's never heard from again because during replace_loop_annotate we only
inspect the loop header and latch for annotations.
Since annotations were supposed to apply to the loop as a whole this fixes it
by checking the loop exit src blocks for annotations instead.
gcc/ChangeLog:

This patch adds the strub attribute for function and variable types,
command-line options, passes and adjustments to implement it,
documentation, and tests.
Stack scrubbing is implemented in a machine-independent way: functions
with strub enabled are modified so that they take an extra stack
watermark argument, that they update with their stack use, and the
caller can then zero it out once it regains control, whether by return
or exception. There are two ways to go about it: at-calls, that
modifies the visible interface (signature) of the function, and
internal, in which the body is moved to a clone, the clone undergoes
the interface change, and the function becomes a wrapper, preserving
its original interface, that calls the clone and then clears the stack
used by it.
Variables can also be annotated with the strub attribute, so that
functions that read from them get stack scrubbing enabled implicitly,
whether at-calls, for functions only usable within a translation unit,
or internal, for functions whose interfaces must not be modified.
There is a strict mode, in which functions that have their stack
scrubbed can only call other functions with stack-scrubbing
interfaces, or those explicitly marked as callable from strub
contexts, so that an entire call chain gets scrubbing, at once or
piecemeal depending on optimization levels. In the default mode,
relaxed, this requirement is not enforced by the compiler.
The implementation adds two IPA passes, one that assigns strub modes
early on, another that modifies interfaces and adds calls to the
builtins that jointly implement stack scrubbing. Another builtin,
that obtains the stack pointer, is added for use in the implementation
of the builtins, whether expanded inline or called in libgcc.
There are new command-line options to change operation modes and to
force the feature disabled; it is enabled by default, but it has no
effect and is implicitly disabled if the strub attribute is never
used. There are also options meant to use for testing the feature,
enabling different strubbing modes for all (viable) functions.

of fixing that up for non-generic address-spaces I've put an assert
there.
I'll note that the same issue exists for initialization from an
empty CTOR which we gimplify to a memset call but since we are
not prepared to handle RTL expansion of the original VLA init and
I failed to provide test coverage (without extending the GNU C
extension for VLA structs) and the Ada frontend (or other frontends)
to not have address-space support the patch instead asserts we only
see generic address-spaces there.

c-c++-common/goacc/kernels-loop-g.c has been failing (compare-debug)
on i686-linux-gnu since r13-3172, because the implementation enabled
debug stmts to cause discriminators to be assigned differently, and
the discriminators are printed in the .gkd dumps that -fcompare-debug
compares.
This patch prevents debug stmts from affecting the discriminators in
nondebug stmts, but enables debug stmts to get discriminators just as
nondebug stmts would if their line numbers match.
I suppose we could arrange for discriminators to be omitted from the
-fcompare-debug dumps, but keeping discriminators in sync is probably
good to avoid other potential sources of divergence between debug and
nondebug.

This patch extends verifier to check that all probabilities and counts are

Loop distribution and ifcvt introduces verisons of loops which may be removed
later if vectorization fails. Ifcvt does this by temporarily breaking profile
and producing conditional that has two arms with 100% probability because we
know one of the versions will be removed.
Loop distribution is trickier, since it introduces test for alignment that
either survives to final code if vecotorization suceeds or is turned if it
fails.
Here we need to assign some reasonable probabilities for the case vectorization
goes well, so this code adds logic to scale profile back in case we remove the
call.
This is not perfect since we drop precise BB counts to guessed. It is not big
deal since we do not use much reliablity of bb counts after this point. Other
option would be to apply scale only if vectorization succeeds which however
needs bit more work at tree-loop-distribution side and would need all code in
this patch with small change that fold_loop_internal_call will have to know how
to adjust if conditional stays. I decided to go for easier solution for now.

This patch adds maybe_flat_loop_profile which can be used in loop profile udpate
to detect situation where the profile may be unrealistically flat and should
not be dwonscalled after vectorizing, unrolling and other transforms that
assume that loop has high iteration count even if the CFG profile says
otherwise.
Profile is flat if it was statically detected and at that time we had
no idea about actual number of iterations or we artificially capped them.
So the function considers flat all profiles that have guessed or lower
reliability in their count and there is no nb_iteration_bounds/estimate
which would prove that the profile iteration count is high enough.

we have flow_loop_dump and print_loop. While print_loop was extended to dump
stuff from loop structure we added over years (loop info), flow_loop_dump was not.
-fdump-tree-all files contains flow_loop_dump which makes it hard to see what
metadata we have attached to loop.
This patch unifies dumping of these fields from both functions. For example for:
int a[100];
main()
{
for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)
a[i]=i;
}
we now print:
;; Loop 0
;; header 0, latch 1
;; depth 0, outer -1
;; nodes: 0 1 2 3 4 5
;;
;; Loop 1
;; header 4, latch 3
;; depth 1, outer 0, finite_p
;; upper_bound 10
;; likely_upper_bound 10
;; estimate 10
;; iterations by profile: 10.001101 (unreliable)
finite_p, upper_boud, likely_upper_bound estimate and iterations by profile is new.

Improve profile update in loop-ch to handle situation where duplicated header
has loop invariant test. In this case we konw that all count of the exit edge belongs to
the duplicated loop header edge and can update probabilities accordingly.
Since we also do all the work to track this information from analysis to duplicaiton
I also added code to turn those conditionals to constants so we do not need later
jump threading pass to clean up.
This made me to work out that the propagation was buggy in few aspects
1) it handled every PHI as PHI in header and incorrectly assigned some PHIs
to be IV-like when they are not
2) it did not check for novops calls that are not required to return same
value on every invocation.
3) I also added check for asm statement since those are not necessarily
reproducible either.
I would like to do more changes, but tried to prevent this patch from
snowballing. The analysis of what statements will remain after duplication can
be improved. I think we should use ranger query for other than first basic
block, too and possibly drop the IV heuristics then. Also it seems that a lot
of this logic is pretty much same to analysis in peeling pass, so unifying this
would be nice.
I also think I should move the profile update out of
gimple_duplicate_sese_region (it is now very specific to ch) and rename it,
since those regions are singe entry multiple exit.

Most common source of profile mismatches is now copyheader pass. The reason is that
in comon case the duplicated header condition will become constant true and that needs
changes in the loop exit condition probability.
While this can be done by jump threading it is not, since it gives up on loops.
Copy header pass now has logic to prove that first exit will become true, so this
patch adds necessary pumbing to the profile updating.
This is done in gimple_duplicate_sese_region in a way that is specific for this
particular case. I think general case is kind-of unsolvable and loop-ch is the
only user of the infrastructure. If we later invent some new users, maybe we
can export the region and region_copy arrays and let user to do the update.
With the patch we now get:

exits and one of exits becomes to be false in all but last peeled iteration.

While improving replace_phi_edge_with_variable for the diamond formed bb

We fail to verify the constraints under which we allow handled
components to wrap registers. The gcc.dg/pr70022.c testcase shows
that we happily end up with
_2 = VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR<int[4]>(v_1(D))
as produced by SSA rewrite and update_address_taken. But the intent
was that we wrap registers with at most a single level of handled
components and specifically only allow __real, __imag, BIT_FIELD_REF
and VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR on them, but not ARRAY_REF or COMPONENT_REF.
The following makes IL verification stricter which catches the
problem.
PR tree-optimization/109644
* tree-cfg.cc (verify_types_in_gimple_reference): Check
register constraints on the outermost VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR
only. Do not allow register or invariant bases on
multi-level or possibly variable index handled components.

The following removes a special case to not merge a block with
only a non-local label. We have a restriction of non-local labels
to be the first statement (and label) in a block, but otherwise nothing,
if the last stmt of A is a non-local label then it will be still
the first statement of the combined A + B. In particular we'd
happily merge when there's a stmt after that label.
The check originates from the tree-ssa merge.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu with all
languages.
* tree-cfg.cc (gimple_can_merge_blocks_p): Remove condition
rejecting the merge when A contains only a non-local label.

DCE now chokes on indirect setjmp calls becoming direct because
that exposes them too late to be subject to abnormal edge creation.
The following patch honors gimple_call_ctrl_altering for those and
_not_ treat formerly indirect calls to setjmp as calls to setjmp
in notice_special_calls.
Unfortunately there's no way to have an indirect call to setjmp
properly annotated (the returns_twice attribute is ignored on types).
RTL expansion late discovers returns-twice for the purpose of
adding REG_SETJMP notes and also sets ->calls_setjmp
(instead of asserting it is set). There's no good way to
transfer proper knowledge around here so I'm using ->calls_setjmp
as a flag to indicate whether gimple_call_ctrl_altering_p was set.
PR tree-optimization/108691
* tree-cfg.cc (notice_special_calls): When the CFG is built
honor gimple_call_ctrl_altering_p.
* cfgexpand.cc (expand_call_stmt): Clear cfun->calls_setjmp
temporarily if the call is not control-altering.
* calls.cc (emit_call_1): Do not add REG_SETJMP if
cfun->calls_setjmp is not set. Do not alter cfun->calls_setjmp.
* gcc.dg/pr108691.c: New testcase.

For PR106099 I've added IFN_TRAP as an alternative to __builtin_trap
meant for __builtin_unreachable purposes (e.g. with -funreachable-traps
or some sanitizers) which doesn't need vops because __builtin_unreachable
doesn't need them either. This works in various cases, but unfortunately
IPA likes to decide on the redirection to unreachable just by tweaking
the cgraph edge to point to a different FUNCTION_DECL. As internal
functions don't have a decl, this causes problems like in the following
testcase.
The following patch fixes it by removing IFN_TRAP again and replacing
it with user inaccessible BUILT_IN_UNREACHABLE_TRAP, so that e.g.
builtin_decl_unreachable can return it directly and we don't need to tweak
it later in wherever we actually replace the call stmt.
