C++20:
#include <compare>
auto cmp4way(double a, double b)
{
return a <=> b;
}
expands to:
ucomisd %xmm1, %xmm0
jp .L8
movl $0, %eax
jne .L8
.L2:
ret
.p2align 4,,10
.p2align 3
.L8:
comisd %xmm0, %xmm1
movl $-1, %eax
ja .L2
ucomisd %xmm1, %xmm0
setbe %al
addl $1, %eax
ret
That is 3 comparisons of the same operands.
The following patch improves it to just one comparison:
comisd %xmm1, %xmm0
jp .L4
seta %al
movl $0, %edx
leal -1(%rax,%rax), %eax
cmove %edx, %eax
ret
.L4:
movl $2, %eax
ret
While a <=> b expands to a == b ? 0 : a < b ? -1 : a > b ? 1 : 2
where the first comparison is equality and this shouldn't raise
exceptions on qNaN operands, if the operands aren't equal (which
includes unordered cases), then it immediately performs < or >
comparison and that raises exceptions even on qNaNs, so we can just
perform a single comparison that raises exceptions on qNaN.
As the 4 different cases are encoded as
ZF CF PF
1 1 1 a unordered b
0 0 0 a > b
0 1 0 a < b
1 0 0 a == b
we can emit optimal sequence of comparions, first jp
for the unordered case, then je for the == case and finally jb
for the < case.
The patch pattern recognizes spaceship-like comparisons during
widening_mul if the spaceship optab is implemented, and replaces
those comparisons with comparisons of .SPACESHIP ifn which returns
-1/0/1/2 based on the comparison. This seems to work well both for the
case of just returning the -1/0/1/2 (when we have just a common
successor with a PHI) or when the different cases are handled with
various other basic blocks. The testcases cover both of those cases,
the latter with different function calls in those.

Currently, the 3rd parameter of function .DEFERRED_INIT is IS_VLA, which is
not needed at all;
In this patch, we change the 3rd parameter from IS_VLA to the name of the var
decl for the following purposes:
1. Fix (or work around) PR103720:
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=103720
As confirmed in PR103720, with the current definition of .DEFERRED_INIT,
Dom transformed:
c$a$0_6 = .DEFERRED_INIT (8, 2, 0);
_1 = .DEFERRED_INIT (8, 2, 0);
into:
c$a$0_6 = .DEFERRED_INIT (8, 2, 0);
_1 = c$a$0_6;
which is incorrectly done due to Dom treating the two calls to const function
.DEFERRED_INIT as the same call since all actual parameters are the same.
The same issue has been exposed in PR102608 due to a different optimization VN,
the fix for PR102608 is to specially handle call to .DEFERRED_INIT in VN to
exclude it from CSE.
To fix PR103720, we could do the same as the fix to PR102608 to specially
handle call to .DEFERRED_INIT in Dom to exclude it from being optimized.
However, in addition to Dom and VN, there should be other optimizations that
have the same issue as PR103720 or PR102608 (As I built Linux kernel with
-ftrivial-auto-var-init=zero -Werror, I noticed a bunch of bugos warnings).
Other than identifying all the optimizations and specially handling call to
.DEFERRED_INIT in all these optimizations, changing the 3rd parameter of the
function .DEFERRED_INIT from IS_VLA to the name string of the var decl might
be a better workaround (or a fix). After this change, since the 3rd actual
parameter is the name string of the variable, different calls for different
variables will have different name strings as the 3rd actual, As a result, the
optimization that previously treated the different calls to .DEFERRED_INIT as
the same will be prevented.
2. Prepare for enabling -Wuninitialized + -ftrivail-auto-var-init for address
taken variables.
As discussion in the following thread:
https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2021-August/577431.html
With the current implemenation of -ftrivial-auto-var-init and uninitialized
warning analysis, the uninitialized warning for an address taken auto variable
might be missed since the variable is completely eliminated by optimization and
replaced with a temporary variable in all the uses.
In order to improve such situation, changing the 3rd parameter of the function
.DEFERRED_INIT to the name string of the variable will provide necessary
information to uninitialized warning analysis to make the missing warning
possible.

The following patch adds support for relocation of the PCH blob on PCH
restore if we don't manage to get the preferred map slot for it.
The GTY stuff knows where all the pointers are, after all it relocates
it once during PCH save from the addresses where it was initially allocated
to addresses in the preferred map slot.
But, if we were to do it solely using GTY info upon PCH restore, we'd need
another set of GTY functions, which I think would make it less maintainable
and I think it would also be more costly at PCH restore time. Those
functions would need to call something to add bias to pointers that haven't
been marked yet and make sure not to add bias to any pointer twice.
So, this patch instead builds a relocation table (sorted list of addresses
in the blob which needs relocation) at PCH save time, stores it in a very
compact form into the gch file and upon restore, adjusts pointers in GTY
roots (that is right away in the root structures) and the addresses in the
relocation table.
The cost on stdc++.gch/O2g.gch (previously 85MB large) is about 3% file size
growth, there are 2.5 million pointers that need relocation in the gch blob
and the relocation table uses uleb128 for address deltas and needs ~1.01 bytes
for one address that needs relocation, and about 20% compile time during
PCH save (I think it is mainly because of the need to qsort those 2.5
million pointers). On PCH restore, if it doesn't need relocation (the usual
case), it is just an extra fread of sizeof (size_t) data and fseek
(in my tests real time on vanilla tree for #include <bits/stdc++.h> CU
was ~0.175s and with the patch but no relocation ~0.173s), while if it needs
relocation it took ~0.193s, i.e. 11.5% slower.
Without PCH that
#include <bits/stdc++.h>
int i;
testcase compiles with -O2 -g in ~1.199s, i.e. 6.2 times slower than PCH with
relocation and 6.9 times than PCH without relocation.
The discovery of the pointers in the blob that need relocation is done
in the relocate_ptrs hook which does the pointer relocation during PCH save.
Unfortunately, I had to make one change to the gengtype stuff due to the
nested_ptr feature of GTY, which some libcpp headers and stringpool.c use.
The relocate_ptrs hook had 2 arguments, pointer to the pointer and a cookie.
When relocate_ptrs is done, in most cases it is called solely on the
subfields of the current object, so e.g.
if ((void *)(x) == this_obj)
op (&((*x).u.fld[0].rt_rtx), cookie);
so relocate_ptrs can assert that ptr_p is within the
state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->obj ..
state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->obj+state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->size-sizeof(void*)
range and compute from that the address in the blob which will need
relocation (state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->new_addr is the new address
given to it and ptr_p-state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->obj is the relative
offset. Unfortunately, for nested_ptr gengtype emits something like:
{
union tree_node * x0 =
((*x).val.node.node) ? HT_IDENT_TO_GCC_IDENT (HT_NODE (((*x).val.node.node))) : NULL;
if ((void *)(x) == this_obj)
op (&(x0), cookie);
(*x).val.node.node = (x0) ? CPP_HASHNODE (GCC_IDENT_TO_HT_IDENT ((x0))) : NULL;
}
so relocate_ptrs is called with an address of some temporary variable and
so doesn't know where the pointer will finally be.
So, I've added another argument to relocate_ptrs (and to
gt_pointer_operator). For the most common case I pass NULL as the new middle
argument to that function, first one remains pointer to the pointer that
needs adjustment and last the cookie. The NULL seems to be cheap to compute
and short in the gt*.[ch] files and stands for ptr_p is an address within
the this_obj's range, remember its address. For the nested_ptr case, the
new middle argument contains actual address of the pointer that might need
to be relocated, so instead of the above
op (&(x0), &((*x).val.node.node), cookie);
in there. And finally, e.g. for the reorder case I need a way to tell
restore_ptrs to ignore a particular address for the relocation purposes
and only treat it the old way. I've used for that the case when
the first and second arguments are equal.
In order to enable support for mapping PCH as fallback at different
addresses than the preferred ones, a small change is needed to the
host pch_use_address hooks. One change I've done to all of them is
the change of the type of the first argument from void * to void *&,
such that the actual address can be told to the callers (or shall I
instead use void **?), but another change that still needs to be done
in them if they want the relocation is actually not fail if they couldn't
get a preferred address, but instead modify what the first argument
refers to. I've done that only for host-linux.c and Iain is testing
similar change for host-darwin.c. Didn't change hpux, netbsd, openbsd,
solaris, mingw32 or the fallbacks because I can't test those.
Tested also with the:

Profile-report was never properly updated after switch to new profile
representation. This patch fixes the way profile mismatches are calculated:
we used to collect separately count and freq mismatches, while now we have
only counts & probabilities. So we verify
- in count: that total count of incomming edges is close to acutal count of
the BB
- out prob: that total sum of outgoing edge edge probabilities is close
to 1 (except for BB containing noreturn calls or EH).
Moreover I added dumping of absolute data which is useful to plot them: with
Martin Liska we plan to setup regular testing so we keep optimizers profie
updates bit under control.
Finally I added both static and dynamic stats about mismatches - static one is
simply number of inconsistencies in the cfg while dynamic is scaled by the
profile - I think in order to keep eye on optimizers the first number is quite
relevant. WHile when tracking why code quality regressed the second number
matters more.

Instead of putting a full blow DCE after execute_fixup_cfg, it makes sense
to try to remove the defining statement for the store that is being removed.
Using simple_dce_from_worklist makes this easier, just mark the ssa_name on
the rhs side of the store (if it was one) in a bitmap and then call
simple_dce_from_worklist at the end.
gcc.dg/pr36902.c needed to be changed such that the static array was no
longer a static array but a global array. This is because this new dce
will remove the load as it is dead. I also filed PR 102864 for the warning
on dead loads.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* tree-cfg.c (maybe_remove_writeonly_store): Add dce_ssa_names argument.
Mark the ssa-name of the rhs as one to be removed.
(execute_fixup_cfg): Update call to maybe_remove_writeonly_store.
Call simple_dce_from_worklist at the end to a simple dce.
gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog:
* gcc.dg/pr36902.c: Move buf to be a non-static variable.
|
|
To make it easier to fix PR 102703, factoring this code out
to its own function makes it easier to read and less indentions
too.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* tree-cfg.c (maybe_remove_writeonly_store): New function
factored out from ...
(execute_fixup_cfg): Here. Call maybe_remove_writeonly_store.
|
|
The comment about execute_fixup_cfg not being able to
run as a standalone pass is not true for a long time
now. It has been a standalone pass for a while now.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* tree-cfg.c (execute_fixup_cfg): Remove comment
about standalone pass.
|
|
While debugging PR 102703, I found it was hard to figure out where
the store was being removed as there was no pass which was outputting
why the store was removed.
This adds to execute_fixup_cfg the output.
Also note most of removals happen when execute_fixup_cfg is called
from the inliner.
gcc/ChangeLog:
* tree-cfg.c (execute_fixup_cfg): Output when the statement
is removed when it is a write only var.

The following makes sure to amend more function names with the
associated DECL_UID when dumping with TDF_UID, in particular
function names printed as part of calls and in the function header.
That allows one to more easily follow the call flow of PR102528
where coroutines cause three clones of the name 'test2' that are
not distinguishable otherwise.

Initialize automatic variables with either a pattern or with zeroes to increase
the security and predictability of a program by preventing uninitialized memory
disclosure and use.
GCC still considers an automatic variable that doesn't have an explicit
initializer as uninitialized, -Wuninitialized will still report warning messages
on such automatic variables.
With this option, GCC will also initialize any padding of automatic variables
that have structure or union types to zeroes.
You can control this behavior for a specific variable by using the variable
attribute "uninitialized" to control runtime overhead.

dump_function_to_file takes the function to dump as a parameter, and
parts of it use the local fun variable where cfun would be used
elsewhere. Others use cfun, presumably in error. Fixed to use fun
uniformly. Added a few more tests for non-NULL fun before
dereferencing it.

* tree-cfg.c (dump_function_to_file): Use fun, not cfun.

As mentioned in [1], there is one pre-existing issue before
the refactoring of FOR_EACH_LOOP_FN. The macro will always
set the given LOOP as NULL at the end of iterating unless
there is some early break inside, obviously there is no
early break and dloop will be set as NULL after the loop
iterating. It's kept as NULL after the factoring.
I tried to debug the test case gcc.dg/graphite/pr83359.c
with commit 555758de90074 (also reproduced the ICE with
555758de90074~), and noticed the compilation of the test
case only covers the hunk:
else
{
moved_orig_loop_num[dloop->orig_loop_num] = -1;
dloop->orig_loop_num = 0;
}
it doesn't touch the if condition hunk to increase
"moved_orig_loop_num[dloop->orig_loop_num]". So the
following hunk guarded with
if (moved_orig_loop_num[orig_loop_num] == 2)
using dloop for dereference doesn't get executed. It
explains why the problem doesn't get exposed before.
By looking to the code using dloop, I think it's a copy
paste typo, the modified assertion codes have the same
words as the above condition check. In that context, the
expected original number has been assigned to variable
orig_loop_num by extracting from the arg0 of the call
IFN_LOOP_DIST_ALIAS.

This patch follows Martin's suggestion here[1], to support
range based loop for iterating loops, analogously to the
patch for vec[2].
For example, use below range-based for loop
for (auto loop : loops_list (cfun, 0))
to replace the previous macro FOR_EACH_LOOP
FOR_EACH_LOOP (loop, 0)

This patch adds support for a dot product where the sign of the multiplication
arguments differ. i.e. one is signed and one is unsigned but the precisions are
the same.
#define N 480
#define SIGNEDNESS_1 unsigned
#define SIGNEDNESS_2 signed
#define SIGNEDNESS_3 signed
#define SIGNEDNESS_4 unsigned
SIGNEDNESS_1 int __attribute__ ((noipa))

{
int av = a[i];
int bv = b[i];
SIGNEDNESS_2 short mult = av * bv;
res += mult;
}
return res;
}
The operations are performed as if the operands were extended to a 32-bit value.
As such this operation isn't valid if there is an intermediate conversion to an
unsigned value. i.e. if SIGNEDNESS_2 is unsigned.
more over if the signs of SIGNEDNESS_3 and SIGNEDNESS_4 are flipped the same
optab is used but the operands are flipped in the optab expansion.
To support this the patch extends the dot-product detection to optionally
ignore operands with different signs and stores this information in the optab
subtype which is now made a bitfield.

If an artificial label created for a landing pad ends up being
dropped in favor of a user-supplied label, the user-supplied label
inherits the landing pad index, but the post_landing_pad field is not
adjusted to point to the new label.
This patch fixes the problem, and adds verification that we don't
remove a label that's still used as a landing pad.
The circumstance in which this problem can be hit was unusual: removal
of a block with an unreachable label moves the label to some other
unrelated block, in case its address is taken. In the case at hand
(pr42739.C, complicated by wrappers and cleanups), the chosen block
happened to be an EH landing pad. (A followup patch will change that.)

* tree-cfg.c (cleanup_dead_labels_eh): Update

primary label.

While debugging PR 100925, I found that the gimple verifiers

This patch adds the check on some unary and binary gimple which

This moves the legacy gimplify_buildN API to tree-vect-generic.c,
its only user and elides the gimplification step, making it a wrapper

When performing cfg cleanup at the end of cfg pass, if there are any OpenMP
regions and some basic blocks are unreachable and contain forced labels,
remove_bb moves the labels to previous bb, but if the two bb belong to different
OpenMP regions, that means it will end up in a different function from where
it was assumed to be and checked e.g. during gimplification or OpenMP region
SESE checking.
The following patch will place the labels to some bb from the right OpenMP
region if the previous bb is not that. I think it should happen very rarely,
normally the bbs from each OpenMP region should be from the before-cfg pass
adjacent and the problems will usually be only if the OpenMP regions are
no-return, so I hope it isn't fatal that it searches through all bbs on the miss.
If it turns out to be a problem, it can always lazily create some better data
structure and maintain it through bb removals when it reaches that case the
first time.

The verifiers require that DECL_NONLOCAL or EH_LANDING_PAD_NR
labels are always the first label if there is more than one label.
When merging blocks, we don't honor that though.
On the following testcase, we try to merge blocks:
<bb 13> [count: 0]:
<L2>:
S::~S (&s);
and
<bb 15> [count: 0]:
<L0>:
resx 1
where <L2> is landing pad and <L0> is FORCED_LABEL. And the code puts
the FORCED_LABEL before the landing pad label, violating the verification
requirements.
The following patch fixes it by moving the FORCED_LABEL after the
DECL_NONLOCAL or EH_LANDING_PAD_NR label if it is the first label.

As conversions between signed integers and signed enums with the same
precision are useless in GIMPLE, it seems strange that we require that
POINTER_DIFF_EXPR result must be INTEGER_TYPE.
If we really wanted to require that, we'd need to change the gimplifier
to ensure that, which it isn't the case on the following testcase.
What is going on during the gimplification is that when we have the
(enum T) (p - q) cast, it is stripped through
/* Strip away as many useless type conversions as possible
at the toplevel. */
STRIP_USELESS_TYPE_CONVERSION (*expr_p);
and when the MODIFY_EXPR is gimplified, the *to_p has enum T type,
while *from_p has intptr_t type and as there is no conversion in between,
we just create GIMPLE_ASSIGN from that.

Previously I've changed gimple_split_edge to avoid PHI node

due to the way edge redirection works. This is now a problem

reducing the overhead of split_edge even more. We can simply

The following testcase FAILs, because we don't mark the child OpenMP function
as cfun->calls_alloca when it does call alloca. When optimizing, during DCE we
reset those flags and recompute them again, but with -O0 DCE is not performed.
Fixed by calling notice_special_calls when moving insns to the child function.
cfun->calls_alloca is normally set during gimplification and most of the
alloca calls omp-low.c does go through the gimplifier, but one spot didn't
and built the gcall directly, so that one needs to set calls_alloca too.

When looking at the verification, I have noticed a bug in it.
The verification that CASE_HIGH (if present) has the same type as CASE_LOW
is only performed for the case label 2 and higher, case label 1 (the first
one after the default label) isn't checked.
The following patch fixes that, it will uselessly also compare

[PR95857]
The following testcase ICEs, because during the cfg cleanup, we see:
switch (i$e_11) <default: <L12> [33.33%], case -3: <lab2> [33.33%], case 0: <L10> [33.33%], case 2: <lab2> [33.33%]>
...
lab2:
__builtin_unreachable ();
where lab2 is FORCED_LABEL. The way it works, we go through the case labels
and when we reach the first one that points to gimple_seq_unreachable*
basic block, we remove the edge (if any) from the switch bb to the bb
containing the label and bbs reachable only through that edge we've just
removed. Once we do that, we must throw away all other cases that use
the same label (or some other labels from the same bb we've removed the edge
to and the bb). To avoid quadratic behavior, this is not done by walking
all remaining cases immediately before removing, but only when processing
them later.
For normal labels this works, fine, if the label is in a deleted bb, it will
have NULL label_to_block and we handle that case, or, if the unreachable bb
has some other edge to it, only the edge will be removed and not the bb,
and again, find_edge will not find the edge and we only remove the case.
And if a label would be to some other block, that other block wouldn't have
been removed earlier because there would be still an edge from the switch
block.
Now, FORCED_LABEL (and I think DECL_NONLOCAL too) break this, because
those labels aren't removed, but instead moved to some surrounding basic
block. So, when we later process those, when their gimple_seq_unreachable*
basic block is removed, label_to_block will return some unrelated block
(in the testcase the switch bb), so we decide to keep the case which doesn't
seem to be unreachable, but we don't really have an edge from the switch
block to the block the label got moved to.
I thought first about punting in gimple_seq_unreachable* on
FORCED_LABEL/DECL_NONLOCAL labels, but that might penalize even code that
doesn't care, so this instead just makes sure that for
FORCED_LABEL/DECL_NONLOCAL labels that are being removed (and thus moved
randomly) we remember in a hash_set the fact that those labels should be
treated as removed for the purpose of the optimization, and later on
handle those labels that way.

This extends DECL_GIMPLE_REG_P to all types so we can clear
TREE_ADDRESSABLE even for integers with partial defs, not just
complex and vector variables. To make that transition easier
the patch inverts DECL_GIMPLE_REG_P to DECL_NOT_GIMPLE_REG_P
since that makes the default the current state for all other
types besides complex and vectors.
For the testcase in PR94703 we're able to expand the partial
def'ed local integer to a register then, producing a single
movl rather than going through the stack.
On i?86 this execute FAILs gcc.dg/torture/pr71522.c because
we now expand a round-trip through a long double automatic var
to a register fld/fst which normalizes the value. For that
during RTL expansion we're looking for problematic punnings
of decls and avoid pseudos for those - I chose integer or
BLKmode accesses on decls with modes where precision doesn't
match bitsize which covers the XFmode case.
