It happens that options are parsed and various diagnostics happen
in finish_options. That's a proper place as the function is also called
for optimize/target attributes (pragmas). However, it is possible that
target overwrites an option from command line and so the diagnostics
does not happen. That's fixed in the patch.
- options are parsed and finish_options is called:
if (opts->x_flag_unwind_tables
&& !targetm_common.unwind_tables_default
&& opts->x_flag_reorder_blocks_and_partition
&& (ui_except == UI_SJLJ || ui_except >= UI_TARGET))
{
if (opts_set->x_flag_reorder_blocks_and_partition)
inform (loc,
"%<-freorder-blocks-and-partition%> does not support "
"unwind info on this architecture");
opts->x_flag_reorder_blocks_and_partition = 0;
opts->x_flag_reorder_blocks = 1;
}
It's not triggered because of opts->x_flag_unwind_tables is false by default, but
the option is overwritten in target:
...
if (TARGET_64BIT_P (opts->x_ix86_isa_flags))
{
if (opts->x_optimize >= 1)
SET_OPTION_IF_UNSET (opts, opts_set, flag_omit_frame_pointer,
!USE_IX86_FRAME_POINTER);
if (opts->x_flag_asynchronous_unwind_tables
&& TARGET_64BIT_MS_ABI)
SET_OPTION_IF_UNSET (opts, opts_set, flag_unwind_tables, 1);
...

It is desirable for -Wattributes to warn about e.g.
[[deprecate]] void g(); // typo, should warn
However, -Wattributes also warns about vendor-specific attributes
(that's because lookup_scoped_attribute_spec -> find_attribute_namespace
finds nothing), which, with -Werror, causes grief. We don't want the
-Wattributes warning for
[[company::attr]] void f();
GCC warns because it doesn't know the "company" namespace; it only knows
the "gnu" and "omp" namespaces. We could entirely disable warning about
attributes in unknown scopes but then the compiler would also miss typos
like
[[company::attrx]] void f();
or
[[gmu::warn_used_result]] int write();
so that is not a viable solution. A workaround is to use a #pragma:
#pragma GCC diagnostic push
#pragma GCC diagnostic ignored "-Wattributes"
[[company::attr]] void f() {}
#pragma GCC diagnostic pop
but that's a mouthful and awkward to use and could also hide typos. In
fact, any macro-based solution doesn't seem like a way forward.
This patch implements -Wno-attributes=, which takes these arguments:
company::attr
company::
This option should go well with using @file: the user could have a file
containing
-Wno-attributes=vendor::attr1,vendor::attr2
and then invoke gcc with '@attrs' or similar.
I've also added a new pragma which has the same effect:
The pragma along with the new option should help with various static
analysis tools.

This makes defaults.h choose DWARF2_DEBUG if PREFERRED_DEBUGGING_TYPE
is not specified by the target and errors out if DWARF DWARF is not supported.
It also makes us warn when STABS is enabled but not the preferred
debugging type and removes the corresponding diagnostic from the Ada frontend.
The warnings are pruned from the testsuite output via prune_gcc_output.
The following target configurations now explicitely default to STABS:
pdp11-*-* pdp11 is a.out, dwarf support is difficult
hppa[12]*-*-hpux10* does not support DWARF
hppa[12]*-*-hpux11* likewise
note that the hppa configs have been deprecated.
Targets with DWARF support will now see
> ./cc1 -quiet t.c -gstabs
t.c: warning: STABS debugging information is obsolete and not supported anymore
that is, -gstabs will still generate STABS but use will be diagnosed
on targets where DWARF is available.
I have built all targets from contrib/config-list.mk to make sure we
don't run into the #error and the following makes the STABS usage
explicit for pdp11 and hppa with SOM.
This completes the series of deprecating STABS for GCC 12.

CTF is supported for C only. Currently, a warning is emitted if the -gctf
command line option is specified for a non-C frontend. This warning is also
used by the GCC testsuite framework - it skips adding -gctf to the list of
debug flags for automated testing, if CTF is not supported for the frontend.
The following warning, however, is not useful in case of LTO:

CTF/BTF debug formats can be safely enabled for all ELF-based targets by
default in GCC.
CTF/BTF debug formats now adopt a similar approach as taken for DWARF debug
format via the DWARF2_DEBUGGING_INFO.
- By default, CTF/BTF formats can be enabled for all ELF-based targets.
- By default, CTF/BTF formats can be disabled for all non ELF-based targets.
- If the user passed a -gctf but CTF is not enabled for the target, GCC
issues an error to the user (as is done currently with other debug formats) -
"target system does not support the 'ctf' debug format". Analogous behavior
for -gbtf command line option.
A previous commit disabled the CTF and BTF testcases on the AIX platform. This
is not necessary now that CTF and BTF debug formats are disabled by default on
all non-ELF targets. GCC emits an error message when -gctf/-gbtf is used on
such platforms and these tests will be skipped.

I was asked by Richi to split my fix for PR 93385 for easier review
into IPA-SRA materialization refactoring and the actual DCE addition.
Fortunately it was mostly natural except for a temporary weird
condition in ipa_param_body_adjustments::modify_call_stmt.
Additionally. In addition to the patch I posted previously, this one
also deallocated the newly added summary in toplev::finalize and fixes
a mistakenly uninitialized field.
This is the first part which basically replaces performed_splits in
clone_info and the code which generates it, keeps it up-to-date and
consumes it with new edge summaries which are much nicer. It simply
contains 1) a mapping from the original argument indices to the actual
indices in the call statement as it is now, 2) information needed to
identify arguments representing pass-through IPA-SRA splits with which
have been added to the call arguments in place of an original
argument/reference and 3) a delta to the index where va_args may start
- so basically directly all the information that the consumer of
performed_splits had to compute and we also do not need the weird
dummy declarations.
The main disadvantage is that the information has to be created (and
kept up-to-date) for all call graph edges associated with the given
statement from all clones (including inline clones) of the clone where
splitting or removal happened first. But all of this happens during
clone materialization so the only effect on WPA memory consumption is
the removal of a pointer from clone_info.
The statement modification code also has to know the statement from
the original function in order to be able to locate the edge summaries
which at this point are still keyed to these. However, the code is
already quite heavily dependant on how things are structured in
tree-inline.c and in order to fix bugs like these it probably has to
be.
The subsequent patch needs this new information to be able to remove
arguments from calls during materialization and communicate this
information to the call redirection.

There are four main features to this change:
1) Check pointer tags match address tags.
When sanitizing for hwasan we now put HWASAN_CHECK internal functions before
memory accesses in the `asan` pass. This checks that a tag in the pointer
being used match the tag stored in shadow memory for the memory region being
used.
These internal functions are expanded into actual checks in the sanopt
pass that happens just before expansion into RTL.
We use the same mechanism that currently inserts ASAN_CHECK internal
functions to insert the new HWASAN_CHECK functions.
2) Instrument known builtin function calls.
Handle all builtin functions that we know use memory accesses.
This commit uses the machinery added for ASAN to identify builtin
functions that access memory.
The main differences between the approaches for HWASAN and ASAN are:
- libhwasan intercepts much less builtin functions.
- Alloca needs to be transformed differently (instead of adding
redzones it needs to tag shadow memory and return a tagged pointer).
- stack_restore needs to untag the shadow stack between the current
position and where it's going.
- `noreturn` functions can not be handled by simply unpoisoning the
entire shadow stack -- there is no "always valid" tag.
(exceptions and things such as longjmp need to be handled in a
different way, usually in the runtime).
For hardware implemented checking (such as AArch64's memory tagging
extension) alloca and stack_restore will need to be handled by hooks in
the backend rather than transformation at the gimple level. This will
allow architecture specific handling of such stack modifications.
3) Introduce HWASAN block-scope poisoning
Here we use exactly the same mechanism as ASAN_MARK to poison/unpoison
variables on entry/exit of a block.
In order to simply use the exact same machinery we're using the same
internal functions until the SANOPT pass. This means that all handling
of ASAN_MARK is the same.
This has the negative that the naming may be a little confusing, but a
positive that handling of the internal function doesn't have to be
duplicated for a function that behaves exactly the same but has a
different name.

Handling stack variables has three features.
1) Ensure HWASAN required alignment for stack variables
When tagging shadow memory, we need to ensure that each tag granule is
only used by one variable at a time.
This is done by ensuring that each tagged variable is aligned to the tag
granule representation size and also ensure that the end of each
object is aligned to ensure the start of any other data stored on the
stack is in a different granule.
This patch ensures the above by forcing the stack pointer to be aligned
before and after allocating any stack objects. Since we are forcing
alignment we also use `align_local_variable` to ensure this new alignment
is advertised properly through SET_DECL_ALIGN.
2) Put tags into each stack variable pointer
Make sure that every pointer to a stack variable includes a tag of some
sort on it.
The way tagging works is:
1) For every new stack frame, a random tag is generated.
2) A base register is formed from the stack pointer value and this
random tag.
3) References to stack variables are now formed with RTL describing an
offset from this base in both tag and value.
The random tag generation is handled by a backend hook. This hook
decides whether to introduce a random tag or use the stack background
based on the parameter hwasan-random-frame-tag. Using the stack
background is necessary for testing and bootstrap. It is necessary
during bootstrap to avoid breaking the `configure` test program for
determining stack direction.
Using the stack background means that every stack frame has the initial
tag of zero and variables are tagged with incrementing tags from 1,
which also makes debugging a bit easier.
Backend hooks define the size of a tag, the layout of the HWASAN shadow
memory, and handle emitting the code that inserts and extracts tags from a
pointer.
3) For each stack variable, tag and untag the shadow stack on function
prologue and epilogue.
On entry to each function we tag the relevant shadow stack region for
each stack variable. This stack region is tagged to match the tag added to
each pointer to that variable.
This is the first patch where we use the HWASAN shadow space, so we need
to add in the libhwasan initialisation code that creates this shadow
memory region into the binary we produce. This instrumentation is done
in `compile_file`.
When exiting a function we need to ensure the shadow stack for this
function has no remaining tags. Without clearing the shadow stack area
for this stack frame, later function calls could get false positives
when those later function calls check untagged areas (such as parameters
passed on the stack) against a shadow stack area with left-over tag.
Hence we ensure that the entire stack frame is cleared on function exit.

These flags can't be used at the same time as any of the other
sanitizers.
We add an equivalent flag to -static-libasan in -static-libhwasan to
ensure static linking.
The -fsanitize=kernel-hwaddress option is for compiling targeting the
kernel. This flag has defaults to match the LLVM implementation and
sets some other behaviors to work in the kernel (e.g. accounting for
the fact that the stack pointer will have 0xff in the top byte and to not
call the userspace library initialisation routines).
The defaults are that we do not sanitize variables on the stack and
always recover from a detected bug.
Since we are introducing a few more conflicts between sanitizer flags we
refactor the checking for such conflicts to use a helper function which
makes checking for such conflicts more easy and consistent.
We introduce a backend hook `targetm.memtag.can_tag_addresses` that
indicates to the mid-end whether a target has a feature like AArch64 TBI
where the top byte of an address is ignored.
Without this feature hwasan sanitization is not done.

So, I've tried under debugger how it behaves and seems global_options_set
is really an or of whether an option has been ever seen as explicit, either
on the command line or in any of the option pragmas or optimize/target
attributes seen so far, so it isn't something that can be relied on.
The following patch implements the saving/restoring of the opts_set bits
(though only for the options/variables saved by the generic options-save.c
code, for the target specific stuff that isn't handled by the generic code
the opts_set argument is now passed to the hook and the backends can choose
e.g. to use a TargetSave variable to save the flags either individually or
together in some bitmask (or ignore it if they never need opts_set for the
options).
This patch itself doesn't fix the testcase failing on arm, but a follow up
patch will.

As the testcase in the PR shows (not included in the patch, as
it seems quite fragile to observe unrolling in the IL), the introduction of
flag_cunroll_grow_size broke optimize attribute related to loop unrolling.
The problem is that the new option flag is set (if not set explicitly) only
in process_options and in rs6000_option_override_internal (and there only if
global_init_p). So, this means that while it is Optimization option, it
will only be set based on the command line -funroll-loops/-O3/-fpeel-loops
or -funroll-all-loops, which means that if command line does include any of
those, it is enabled even for functions that will through optimize attribute
have all of those disabled, and if command line does not include those,
it will not be enabled for functions that will through optimize attribute
have any of those enabled.
process_options is called just once, so IMHO it should be handling only
non-Optimization option adjustments (various other options suffer from that
too, but as this is a regression from 10.1 on the 10 branch, changing those
is not appropriate). Similarly, rs6000_option_override_internal is called
only once (with global_init_p) and then for target attribute handling, but
not for optimize attribute handling.
This patch moves the unrolling related handling from process_options into
finish_options which is invoked whenever the options are being finalized,
and the rs6000 specific parts into the override_options_after_change hook
which is called for optimize attribute handling (and unfortunately also
th cfun changes, but what the hook does is cheap) and I've added a call to
that from rs6000_override_options_internal, so it is also called on cmdline
processing and for target attribute.
Furthermore, it stops using AUTODETECT_VALUE, which can work only once,
and instead uses the global_options_set.x_... flags.

This patch removes the generation of HSAIL from the compiler, the HSA
offloading plugin from libgomp and the associated testsuite tests and
infrastructure bits from the respective testsuites.
Apart from removal of the obvious files, I removed bits that I found
by searching for HSA related terms and by re-tracing my steps and
looking at the patches that introduced HSA in the first place. I did
not remove everything these patches brought in, for example:
- the mechanism to pass offload-target specific info from the application to
the offloading plugin - but the same mechanism is also used to
communicate number of teams and the thread limit to all offload targets.
- run_func hook in gomp_device_descr stays too, although now it is
not used. If some future offload target would like the ability to
refuse to offload some functions, it can use it. It is easy to
remove as a follow-up if it is considered clutter, though.
- configure options --with-hsa-runtime=PATH, -with-hsa-runtime-include=PATH
and --with-hsa-runtime-lib=PATH rmeain because GCN uses them too.
- Surprisingly, GOMP_TARGET_ARG_HSA_KERNEL_ATTRIBUTES (a constant
from gomp-constants.h) appears in the source of the amdgcn libgomp
plugin, although I tend to think that code path is not ever used
and this patch certainly removes it from the compiler.
Nevertheless, it seems it has potential value beyond HSAIL and so
I've kept it, it can of course always be easily removed in the
future of GCN folk abandon it too.
- I assume constants OFFLOAD_TARGET_TYPE_HSA and GOMP_DEVICE_HSA
need to stay indefinitely too just so that no future offload
target picks that number.
- I have kept dg-require-effective-target
offload_device_nonshared_as requirement of thests which have it.
It is quite probable I missed some small HSA artifacts but those
should be easy to remove later as we find them.

Currently GIMPLE complete unroller(cunroll) is checking
flag_unroll_loops and flag_peel_loops to see if allow size growth.
Beside affects curnoll, flag_unroll_loops also controls RTL unroler.
To have more freedom to control cunroll and RTL unroller, this patch
introduces flag_cunroll_grow_size. With this patch, we can control
cunroll and RTL unroller indepently.

This patch simplifies (!!!) the logic governing the naming of dump
files and auxiliary output files in the driver, in the compiler, and
in the LTO wrapper. No changes are made to the naming of primary
outputs, there are often ways to restore past behavior, and a number
of inconsistencies are fixed. Some internal options are removed
(-auxbase and -auxbase-strip), sensible existing uses of -dumpdir and
-dumpbase options remain unchanged, additional useful cases are added,
making for what is still admittedly quite complex. Extensive
documentation and testcases provide numerous examples, from normal to
corner cases.
The most visible changes are:
- aux and dump files now always go in the same directory, that
defaults to the directory of the primary output, but that can be
overridden with -dumpdir, -save-temps=*, or, preserving past behavior,
with a -dumpbase with a directory component.
- driver and compiler now have the same notion of naming of auxiliary
outputs, e.g. .dwo files will no longer be in one location while the
debug info suggests they are elsewhere, and -save-temps and .dwo
auxiliary outputs now go in the same location as .su, .ci and
coverage data, with consistent naming.
- explicitly-specified primary output names guide not only the
location of aux and dump outputs: the output base name is also used in
their base name, as a prefix when also linking (e.g. foo.c bar.c -o
foobar creates foobar-foo.dwo and foobar-bar.dwo with -gsplit-dwarf),
or as the base name instead of the input name (foo.c -c -o whatever.o
creates whatever.su rather than foo.su with -fstack-usage). The
preference for the input file base name, quite useful for our
testsuite, can be restored with -dumpbase "". When compiling and
linking tests in the testsuite with additional inputs, we now use this
flag. Files named in dejagnu board ldflags, libs, and ldscripts are
now quoted in the gcc testsuite with -Wl, so that they are not counted
as additional inputs by the compiler driver.
- naming a -dumpbase when compiling multiple sources used to cause
dumps from later compiles to overwrite those of earlier ones; it is
now used as a prefix when compiling multiple sources, like an
executable name above.
- the dumpbase, explicitly specified or computed from output or input
names, now also governs the naming of aux outputs; since aux outputs
usually replaced the suffix from the input name, while dump outputs
append their own additional suffixes, a -dumpbase-ext option is
introduced to enable a chosen suffix to be dropped from dumpbase to
form aux output names.
- LTO dump and aux outputs were quite a mess, sometimes leaking
temporary output names into -save-temps output names, sometimes
conversely generating desirable aux outputs in temporary locations.
They now obey the same logic of compiler aux and dump outputs, landing
in the expected location and taking the linker output name or an
explicit dumpbase overrider into account.
- Naming of -fdump-final-insns outputs now follows the dump file
naming logic for the .gkd files, and the .gk dump files generated in
the second -fcompare-debug compilation get the .gk inserted before the
suffix that -dumpbase-ext drops in aux outputs.

This patch adds support for associating a "diagnostic_path" with a
diagnostic: a sequence of events predicted by the compiler that leads to
the problem occurring, with their locations in the user's source,
text descriptions, and stack information (for handling interprocedural
paths).
For example, the following (hypothetical) error has a 3-event
intraprocedural path:
test.c: In function 'demo':
test.c:29:5: error: passing NULL as argument 1 to 'PyList_Append' which
requires a non-NULL parameter
29 | PyList_Append(list, item);
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'demo': events 1-3
|
| 25 | list = PyList_New(0);
| | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~
| | |
| | (1) when 'PyList_New' fails, returning NULL
| 26 |
| 27 | for (i = 0; i < count; i++) {
| | ~~~
| | |
| | (2) when 'i < count'
| 28 | item = PyLong_FromLong(random());
| 29 | PyList_Append(list, item);
| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| | |
| | (3) when calling 'PyList_Append', passing NULL from (1) as argument 1
|
The patch adds a new "%@" format code for printing event IDs, so that
in the above, the description of event (3) mentions event (1), showing
the user where the bogus NULL value comes from (the event IDs are
colorized to draw the user's attention to them).
There is a separation between data vs presentation: the above shows how
the diagnostic-printing code has consolidated the path into a single run
of events, since all the events are near each other and within the same
function; more complicated examples (such as interprocedural paths)
might be printed as multiple runs of events.
Examples of how interprocedural paths are printed can be seen in the
test suite (which uses a plugin to exercise the code without relying
on specific warnings using this functionality).
Other output formats include
- JSON,
- printing each event as a separate "note", and
- to not emit paths.

This patch adds support for associating a diagnostic message with an
optional diagnostic_metadata object, so that plugins can add extra data
to their diagnostics (e.g. mapping a diagnostic to a taxonomy or coding
standard such as from CERT or MISRA).
Currently this only supports associating a CWE identifier with a
diagnostic (which is what I'm using for the warnings in the analyzer
patch kit), but adding a diagnostic_metadata class allows for future
growth in this area without an explosion of further "warning_at"
overloads for all of the different kinds of custom data that a plugin
might want to add.
This version of the patch renames the overly-general
-fdiagnostics-show-metadata to -fdiagnostics-show-cwe and adds test
coverage for it via a plugin.
It also adds a note to the documentation that no GCC diagnostics
currently use this; it's a feature for plugins (and, at some point,
I hope, the analyzer).

The information in cgraph callees is released long before we get to
the point in which -fcallgraph-info edges are dumped, or even

created for -fcallgraph-info are much smaller, and they don't even
coexist, so not even peak use grows.
