2017-09-12Convert hard_regno_nregs to a functionRichard Sandiford1-4/+4
This patch converts hard_regno_nregs into an inline function, which in turn allows hard_regno_nregs to be used as the name of a targetm field. 2017-08-30[64/77] Add a scalar_mode classRichard Sandiford1-1/+1
This patch adds a scalar_mode class that can hold any scalar mode, specifically: - scalar integers - scalar floating-point values - scalar fractional modes - scalar accumulator modes - pointer bounds modes To start with this patch uses this type for GET_MODE_INNER. 2017-08-30[51/77] Use opt_scalar_int_mode when iterating over integer modesRichard Sandiford1-5/+7
This patch uses opt_scalar_int_mode rather than machine_mode when iterating over scalar_int_modes, in cases where that helps with future patches. (Using machine_mode is still OK in places that don't really care about the mode being a scalar integer.) 2017-08-30 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * cse.c (cse_insn): Use opt_scalar_int_mode for the mode iterator. * explow.c (hard_function_value): Likewise. * expmed.c (extract_fixed_bit_field_1): Likewise. 2017-08-30[49/77] Simplify nonzero/num_sign_bits hooksRichard Sandiford1-6/+4
The two implementations of the reg_nonzero_bits and reg_num_sign_bits hooks ignored the "known_x", "known_mode" and "known_ret" arguments, so this patch removes them. It adds a new scalar_int_mode parameter that specifies the mode of "x". Similarly to the nonzero_bits patch, this one moves the mode class check and VOIDmode handling from num_sign_bit_copies1 to num_sign_bit_copies itself, then changes the subroutines to operate on scalar_int_modes. 2017-08-30 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * rtlanal.c (num_sign_bit_copies): Handle VOIDmode here rather than in subroutines. 2017-08-30[47/77] Make subroutines of nonzero_bits operate on scalar_int_modeRichard Sandiford1-56/+57
nonzero_bits1 assumed that all bits of a floating-point or vector mode were needed. It seems likely that fixed-point modes should have been handled in the same way. After excluding those, the only remaining modes that are likely to be useful are scalar integer ones. This patch moves the mode class check to nonzero_bits itself, along with the handling of mode == VOIDmode. The subroutines of nonzero_bits can then take scalar_int_modes. 2017-08-30 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * rtlanal.c (nonzero_bits): Handle VOIDmode here rather than in subroutines. 2017-08-22Make more use of paradoxical_subreg_pRichard Sandiford1-1/+1
This patch makes more use of the existing paradoxical_subreg_p predicate and also adds a version that operates on outer and inner modes. Some of the affected tests were based on GET_MODE_SIZE rather than GET_MODE_PRECISION and so the patch could change the result for modes that have the same size but different precisions. I think in each case the change should be a no-op or more correct, since a mode with precision N bits can't be expected to hold all of a mode with precision M>N bits. The patch changes the branch taken in simplify_subreg for modes with equal precision, but the new form matches the commentary more closely. Both branches should be equally good in that situation. 2017-08-22 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * rtl.h (paradoxical_subreg_p): Define inline, and add a version that takes the outer and inner modes. * doc/rtl.texi: Use paradoxical_subreg_p instead of a GET_MODE_SIZE comparison as the canonical test for a paradoxical subreg. * combine.c (simplify_set): Use paradoxical_subreg_p. 2017-06-30[rtlanal] Do a better job of costing parallel sets containing flag-setting ↵Richard Earnshaw1-5/+23
operations. Many parallel set insns are of the form of a single set that also sets the condition code flags. In this case the cost of such an insn is normally the cost of the part that doesn't set the flags, since updating the condition flags is simply a side effect. At present all such insns are treated as having unknown cost (ie 0) and combine assumes that such insns are infinitely more expensive than any other insn sequence with a non-zero cost. This patch addresses this problem by allowing insn_rtx_cost to ignore the condition setting part of a PARALLEL iff there is exactly one comparison set and one non-comparison set. If the only set operation is a comparison we still use that as the basis of the insn cost. * rtlanal.c (insn_rtx_cost): If a parallel contains exactly one comparison set and one other set, use the cost of the non-comparison set. The intent (in combination with later patches) is to move the handling of the BYTES_BIG_ENDIAN != WORDS_BIG_ENDIAN case into just two places, so that for other combinations we don't have to split offsets into words and subwords. gcc/ 2016-11-15 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> * rtl.h (subreg_size_offset_from_lsb): Declare. 2016-11-16Fix handling of unknown sizes in rtx_addr_can_trap_pRichard Sandiford1-0/+2
If the size passed in to rtx_addr_can_trap_p was zero, the frame handling would get the size from the mode instead. However, this too can be zero if the mode is BLKmode, i.e. if we have a BLKmode memory reference with no MEM_SIZE (which should be rare these days). This meant that the conditions for a 4-byte access at offset X were stricter than those for an access of unknown size at offset X. This patch checks whether the size is still zero, as the SYMBOL_REF handling does. gcc/ 2016-11-15 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> * rtlanal.c (rtx_addr_can_trap_p_1): Handle unknown sizes. 2016-11-15Add a load_extend_op wrapperRichard Sandiford1-9/+21
LOAD_EXTEND_OP only applies to scalar integer modes that are narrower than a word. However, callers weren't consistent about which of these checks they made beforehand, and also weren't consistent about whether "smaller" was based on (bit)size or precision (IMO it's the latter). This patch adds a wrapper to try to make the macro easier to use. LOAD_EXTEND_OP is often used to disable transformations that aren't beneficial when extends from memory are free, so being stricter about the check accidentally exposed more optimisation opportunities. "SUBREG_BYTE (...) == 0" and subreg_lowpart_p are implied by paradoxical_subreg_p, so the patch also removes some redundant tests. The patch doesn't change reload, since different checks could have unforeseen consequences. gcc/ 2016-11-15 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> * rtl.h (load_extend_op): Declare. * rtlanal.c (load_extend_op): New function. 2016-11-15Move misplaced assignment in num_sign_bit_copies1Richard Sandiford1-2/+2
The old assignment to bitwidth was before we handled VOIDmode with: if (mode == VOIDmode) mode = GET_MODE (x); so when VOIDmode was specified we would always use: if (bitwidth < GET_MODE_PRECISION (GET_MODE (x))) { num0 = cached_num_sign_bit_copies (x, GET_MODE (x), known_x, known_mode, known_ret); return MAX (1, num0 - (int) (GET_MODE_PRECISION (GET_MODE (x)) - bitwidth)); } For a zero bitwidth this always returns 1 (which is the most pessimistic result). gcc/ 2016-11-15 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> * rtlanal.c (num_sign_bit_copies1): Calculate bitwidth after handling VOIDmode.
