2023-10-12wide-int: Fix build with gcc < 12 or clang++ [PR111787]Jakub Jelinek1-0/+1
While my wide_int patch bootstrapped/regtested fine when I used GCC 12 as system gcc, apparently it doesn't with GCC 11 and older or clang++. For GCC before PR96555 C++ DR1315 implementation the compiler complains about template argument involving template parameters, for clang++ the same + complains about missing needs_write_val_arg static data member in some wi::int_traits specializations. 2023-10-12 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR bootstrap/111787 * tree.h (wi::int_traits <unextended_tree>::needs_write_val_arg): New static data member. (int_traits <extended_tree <N>>::needs_write_val_arg): Likewise. (wi::ints_for): Provide separate partial specializations for generic_wide_int <extended_tree <N>> and INL_CONST_PRECISION or that and CONST_PRECISION, rather than using int_traits <extended_tree <N> >::precision_type as the second template argument. * rtl.h (wi::int_traits <rtx_mode_t>::needs_write_val_arg): New static data member. * double-int.h (wi::int_traits <double_int>::needs_write_val_arg): Likewise.
2023-09-29Remove poly_int_podRichard Sandiford1-4/+4
poly_int was written before the switch to C++11 and so couldn't use explicit default constructors. This led to an awkward split between poly_int_pod and poly_int. poly_int simply inherited from poly_int_pod and added constructors, with the argumentless constructor having an empty body. But inheritance meant that poly_int had to repeat the assignment operators from poly_int_pod (again, no C++11, so no "using" to inherit base-class implementations). All that goes away if we switch to using default constructors. The main complication is ensuring that braced initialisation still gives a constexpr, so that static variables can be initialised without runtime code. The two problems here are: (1) When initialising a poly_int<N, wide_int> with fewer than N coefficients, the other coefficients need to be a zero of the same precision as the explicit coefficients. This was previously done in a for loop using wi::ints_for<...>::zero, but C++11 constexpr constructors can't have function bodies. The patch instead uses a series of delegated initialisers to fill in the implicit coefficients. (2) The initialisation in: void f(int x) { unsigned int foo {x}; } produces the warning: warning: narrowing conversion of 'x' from 'int' to 'unsigned int' [-Wnarrowing] whereas: void f(int x) { unsigned int foo = x; } does not. So switching to direct initialisation of the coeffs array would mean that: poly_uin64_t x = 0; would trigger a warning for using 0 rather than 0u. That seemed overly pedantic, so the patch adds explicit casts to the constructor. The complication is to do that without adding extra code to wide-int versions. The patch uses a new init_cast type for that. gcc/ * poly-int.h (poly_int_pod): Delete. (poly_coeff_traits::init_cast): New type. (poly_int_full, poly_int_hungry, poly_int_fullness): New structures. (poly_int): Replace constructors that take 1 and 2 coefficients with a general one that takes an arbitrary number of coefficients. Delegate initialization to two new private constructors, one of which uses the coefficients as-is and one of which adds an extra zero of the appropriate type (and precision, where applicable). 2023-09-28[RA]: Add flag for checking IRA in progressVladimir N. Makarov1-2/+5
RISCV target developers need a flag to prevent creating insns in IRA which can not be split after RA as they will need a temporary reg. The patch introduces such flag. gcc/ChangeLog: * rtl.h (lra_in_progress): Change type to bool. (ira_in_progress): Add new extern. * ira.cc (ira_in_progress): New global. 2023-09-12riscv: Add support for strlen inline expansionChristoph Müllner1-0/+2
This patch implements the expansion of the strlen builtin for RV32/RV64 for xlen-aligned aligned strings if Zbb or XTheadBb instructions are available. The inserted sequences are: rv32gc_zbb (RV64 is similar): add a3,a0,4 li a4,-1 .L1: lw a5,0(a0) add a0,a0,4 orc.b a5,a5 beq a5,a4,.L1 not a5,a5 ctz a5,a5 srl a5,a5,0x3 add a0,a0,a5 sub a0,a0,a3 rv64gc_xtheadbb (RV32 is similar): add a4,a0,8 .L2: ld a5,0(a0) add a0,a0,8 th.tstnbz a5,a5 beqz a5,.L2 th.rev a5,a5 th.ff1 a5,a5 srl a5,a5,0x3 add a0,a0,a5 sub a0,a0,a4 This allows to inline calls to strlen(), with optimized code for xlen-aligned strings, resulting in the following benefits over a call to libc: * no call/ret instructions * no stack frame allocation * no register saving/restoring * no alignment test The inlining mechanism is gated by a new switch ('-minline-strlen') and by the variable 'optimize_size'. Tested using the glibc string tests. 2023-08-23rtl: Forward declare rtx_codeRichard Earnshaw1-1/+1

2023-07-22Fix alpha buildingAndrew Pinski1-1/+1
The problem is after r14-2587-gd8105b10fff951, the definition of extended_count now takes a bool as its last argument but we only have a declaration for the version which takes an int as the last argument. This fixes the problem by changing the declaration to be a bool too. Committed as obvious after building a cross to alpha-linux-gnu. gcc/ChangeLog: PR target/110778 * rtl.h (extended_count): Change last argument type to bool.
2023-07-20Move combine over to statistics_counter_event.Andrew Pinski1-2/+0
Since we have statistics_counter_event now, combine should use that instead of it is own custom printing of statistics. The only thing that is not done any more after this patch is printing out the total stats for the whole TU. Note you need to use -fdump-rtl-combine-stats to get the stats in the combine dump unlike before where the stats was dumped directly into the file. OK? Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu with no regressions. gcc/ChangeLog: * combine.cc (dump_combine_stats): Remove. (dump_combine_total_stats): Remove. 2023-05-18Machine_Mode: Extend machine_mode from 8 to 16 bitsPan Li1-5/+7
We are running out of the machine_mode(8 bits) in RISC-V backend. Thus we would like to extend the machine_mode bit size from 8 to 16 bits. However, it is sensitive to extend the memory size in common structure like tree or rtx. This patch would like to extend the machine_mode bits to 16 bits by shrinking, like: * Swap the bit size of code and machine code in rtx_def. * Adjust the machine_mode location and spare in tree. The memory impact of this patch for correlated structure looks like below: +-------------------+----------+---------+------+ | struct/bytes | upstream | patched | diff | +-------------------+----------+---------+------+ | rtx_obj_reference | 8 | 12 | +4 | | ext_modified | 2 | 4 | +2 | | ira_allocno | 192 | 184 | -8 | | qty_table_elem | 40 | 40 | 0 | | reg_stat_type | 64 | 64 | 0 | | rtx_def | 40 | 40 | 0 | | table_elt | 80 | 80 | 0 | | tree_decl_common | 112 | 112 | 0 | | tree_type_common | 128 | 128 | 0 | | access_info | 8 | 8 | 0 | +-------------------+----------+---------+------+ The tree and rtx related struct has no memory changes after this patch, and the machine_mode changes to 16 bits already. 2023-02-16don't declare header-defined functions both static and inlinePatrick Palka1-17/+17
Many functions defined in our headers are declared 'static inline' which is a C idiom whose use predates our move to C++ as the implementation language. But in C++ the inline keyword is more than just a compiler hint, and is sufficient to give the function the intended semantics. In fact declaring a function both static and inline is a pessimization since static effectively disables the desired definition merging behavior enabled by inline, and is also a source of (harmless) ODR violations when a static inline function gets called from a non-static inline one (such as tree_operand_check calling tree_operand_length). This patch mechanically fixes the vast majority of occurrences of this anti-pattern throughout the compiler's headers via the command line sed -i 's/^static inline/inline/g' gcc/*.h gcc/*/*.h There's also a manual change to remove the redundant declarations of is_ivar and lookup_category in gcc/objc/objc-act.cc which would otherwise conflict with their modified definitions in objc-act.h (due to the difference in staticness). Besides fixing some ODR violations, this speeds up stage1 cc1plus by about 2% and reduces the size of its text segment by 1.5MB. gcc/ChangeLog: * addresses.h: Mechanically drop 'static' from 'static inline' functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. * asan.h: Likewise. * attribs.h: Likewise. * basic-block.h: Likewise. * bitmap.h: Likewise. * cfghooks.h: Likewise. * cfgloop.h: Likewise. * cgraph.h: Likewise. * cselib.h: Likewise. * data-streamer.h: Likewise. * debug.h: Likewise. * df.h: Likewise. * diagnostic.h: Likewise. * dominance.h: Likewise. * dumpfile.h: Likewise. * emit-rtl.h: Likewise. * except.h: Likewise. * expmed.h: Likewise. * expr.h: Likewise. * fixed-value.h: Likewise. * gengtype.h: Likewise. * gimple-expr.h: Likewise. * gimple-iterator.h: Likewise. * gimple-predict.h: Likewise. * gimple-range-fold.h: Likewise. * gimple-ssa.h: Likewise. * gimple.h: Likewise. * graphite.h: Likewise. * hard-reg-set.h: Likewise. * hash-map.h: Likewise. * hash-set.h: Likewise. * hash-table.h: Likewise. * hwint.h: Likewise. * input.h: Likewise. * insn-addr.h: Likewise. * internal-fn.h: Likewise. * ipa-fnsummary.h: Likewise. * ipa-icf-gimple.h: Likewise. * ipa-inline.h: Likewise. * ipa-modref.h: Likewise. * ipa-prop.h: Likewise. * ira-int.h: Likewise. * ira.h: Likewise. * lra-int.h: Likewise. * lra.h: Likewise. * lto-streamer.h: Likewise. * memmodel.h: Likewise. * omp-general.h: Likewise. * optabs-query.h: Likewise. * optabs.h: Likewise. * plugin.h: Likewise. * pretty-print.h: Likewise. * range.h: Likewise. * read-md.h: Likewise. * recog.h: Likewise. * regs.h: Likewise. * rtl-iter.h: Likewise. * rtl.h: Likewise. * sbitmap.h: Likewise. * sched-int.h: Likewise. * sel-sched-ir.h: Likewise. * sese.h: Likewise. * sparseset.h: Likewise. * ssa-iterators.h: Likewise. * system.h: Likewise. * target-globals.h: Likewise. * target.h: Likewise. * timevar.h: Likewise. * tree-chrec.h: Likewise. * tree-data-ref.h: Likewise. * tree-iterator.h: Likewise. * tree-outof-ssa.h: Likewise. * tree-phinodes.h: Likewise. * tree-scalar-evolution.h: Likewise. * tree-sra.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-alias.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-live.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-loop-manip.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-loop.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-operands.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-propagate.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-sccvn.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa.h: Likewise. * tree-ssanames.h: Likewise. * tree-streamer.h: Likewise. * tree-switch-conversion.h: Likewise. * tree-vectorizer.h: Likewise. * tree.h: Likewise. * wide-int.h: Likewise. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-common.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/c/ChangeLog: * c-parser.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * cp-tree.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/fortran/ChangeLog: * gfortran.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/jit/ChangeLog: * jit-dejagnu.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. * jit-recording.h: Likewise. gcc/objc/ChangeLog: * objc-act.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. * objc-map.h: Likewise. * objc-act.cc: Remove the redundant redeclarations of is_ivar and lookup_category.

2022-09-28Add instruction level discriminator support.Eugene Rozenfeld1-0/+1
This is the first in a series of patches to enable discriminator support in AutoFDO. This patch switches to tracking discriminators per statement/instruction instead of per basic block. Tracking per basic block was problematic since not all statements in a basic block needed a discriminator and, also, later optimizations could move statements between basic blocks making correlation during AutoFDO compilation unreliable. Tracking per statement also allows us to assign different discriminators to multiple function calls in the same basic block. A subsequent patch will add that support. The idea of this patch is based on commit 4c311d95cf6d9519c3c20f641cc77af7df491fdf by Dehao Chen in vendors/google/heads/gcc-4_8 but uses a slightly different approach. In Dehao's work special (normally unused) location ids and side tables were used to keep track of locations with discriminators. Things have changed since then and I don't think we have unused location ids anymore. Instead, I made discriminators a part of ad-hoc locations. The difference from Dehao's work also includes support for discriminator reading/writing in lto streaming and in modules. Tested on x86_64-pc-linux-gnu. gcc/ChangeLog: * basic-block.h: Remove discriminator from basic blocks. * cfghooks.cc (split_block_1): Remove discriminator from basic blocks. * final.cc (final_start_function_1): Switch from per-bb to per statement discriminator. 2022-01-19ifcvt/optabs: Allow using a CC comparison for emit_conditional_move.Robin Dapp1-1/+10
Currently we only ever call emit_conditional_move with the comparison (as well as its comparands) we got from the jump. Thus, backends are going to emit a CC comparison for every conditional move that is being generated instead of re-using the existing CC. This, combined with emitting temporaries for each conditional move, causes sky-high costs for conditional moves. This patch allows to re-use a CC so the costing situation is improved a bit. gcc/ChangeLog: * rtl.h (struct rtx_comparison): New struct that holds an rtx comparison. * config/rs6000/rs6000.cc (rs6000_emit_minmax): Use struct instead of single parameters. 2021-12-01simplify-rtx: Punt on simplify_associative_operation with large operands ↵Jakub Jelinek1-0/+8
[PR102356] Seems simplify_associate_operation is quadratic, which isn't a big deal for use during combine and other similar RTL passes, because those never try to combine expressions from more than a few instructions and because those instructions need to be recognized the machine description also bounds how many expressions can appear in there. var-tracking has depth limits only for some cases and unlimited depth for the vt_expand_loc though: /* This is the value used during expansion of locations. We want it to be unbounded, so that variables expanded deep in a recursion nest are fully evaluated, so that their values are cached correctly. We avoid recursion cycles through other means, and we don't unshare RTL, so excess complexity is not a problem. */ #define EXPR_DEPTH (INT_MAX) /* We use this to keep too-complex expressions from being emitted as location notes, and then to debug information. Users can trade compile time for ridiculously complex expressions, although they're seldom useful, and they may often have to be discarded as not representable anyway. */ #define EXPR_USE_DEPTH (param_max_vartrack_expr_depth) IMO for very large expressions it isn't worth trying to reassociate though, in fact e.g. for the new testcase below keeping it as is has bigger chance of generating smaller debug info which the dwarf2out.c part of the change tries to achieve - if a binary operation has the same operands, we can use DW_OP_dup and not bother computing the possibly large operand again. The patch fixes it by adding a counter to simplify_context and counting how many times simplify_associative_operation has been called during a single outermost simplify_* call, and once it reaches some maximum (currently 64), it stops reassociating. Another possibility to deal with the power expressions in debug info would be to introduce some new RTL operation for the pow{,i} (x, n) case, allow that solely in debug insns and expand those into DWARF using a loop. But that seems like quite a lot of work for something rarely used (especially when powi for larger n is only useful for 0 and 1 inputs because anything else overflows). 2021-12-01 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR rtl-optimization/102356 * rtl.h (simplify_context): Add assoc_count member and max_assoc_count static member. * simplify-rtx.c (simplify_associative_operation): Don't reassociate more than max_assoc_count times within one outermost simplify_* call. * dwarf2out.c (mem_loc_descriptor): Optimize binary operation with both operands the same using DW_OP_dup. * gcc.dg/pr102356.c: New test.
2021-11-01middle-end: Teach CSE to be able to do vector extracts.Tamar Christina1-0/+7
This patch gets CSE to re-use constants already inside a vector rather than re-materializing the constant again. Basically consider the following case: #include <stdint.h> #include <arm_neon.h> uint64_t test (uint64_t a, uint64x2_t b, uint64x2_t* rt) { uint64_t arr[2] = { 0x0942430810234076UL, 0x0942430810234076UL}; uint64_t res = a | arr[0]; uint64x2_t val = vld1q_u64 (arr); *rt = vaddq_u64 (val, b); return res; } The actual behavior is inconsequential however notice that the same constants are used in the vector (arr and later val) and in the calculation of res. The code we generate for this however is quite sub-optimal: test: adrp x2, .LC0 sub sp, sp, #16 ldr q1, [x2, #:lo12:.LC0] mov x2, 16502 movk x2, 0x1023, lsl 16 movk x2, 0x4308, lsl 32 add v1.2d, v1.2d, v0.2d movk x2, 0x942, lsl 48 orr x0, x0, x2 str q1, [x1] add sp, sp, 16 ret .LC0: .xword 667169396713799798 .xword 667169396713799798 Essentially we materialize the same constant twice. The reason for this is because the front-end lowers the constant extracted from arr[0] quite early on. If you look into the result of fre you'll find <bb 2> : arr[0] = 667169396713799798; arr[1] = 667169396713799798; res_7 = a_6(D) | 667169396713799798; _16 = __builtin_aarch64_ld1v2di (&arr); _17 = VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR<uint64x2_t>(_16); _11 = b_10(D) + _17; *rt_12(D) = _11; arr ={v} {CLOBBER}; return res_7; Which makes sense for further optimization. However come expand time if the constant isn't representable in the target arch it will be assigned to a register again. (insn 8 5 9 2 (set (reg:V2DI 99) (const_vector:V2DI [ (const_int 667169396713799798 [0x942430810234076]) repeated x2 ])) "cse.c":7:12 -1 (nil)) ... (insn 14 13 15 2 (set (reg:DI 103) (const_int 667169396713799798 [0x942430810234076])) "cse.c":8:12 -1 (nil)) (insn 15 14 16 2 (set (reg:DI 102 [ res ]) (ior:DI (reg/v:DI 96 [ a ]) (reg:DI 103))) "cse.c":8:12 -1 (nil)) And since it's out of the immediate range of the scalar instruction used combine won't be able to do anything here. This will then trigger the re-materialization of the constant twice. To fix this this patch extends CSE to be able to generate an extract for a constant from another vector, or to make a vector for a constant by duplicating another constant. Whether this transformation is done or not depends entirely on the costing for the target for the different constants and operations. I Initially also investigated doing this in PRE, but PRE requires at least 2 BB to work and does not currently have any way to remove redundancies within a single BB and it did not look easy to support. gcc/ChangeLog: * cse.c (add_to_set): New. 2021-07-13gcc: Add vec_select -> subreg RTL simplificationJonathan Wright1-0/+1
Add a new RTL simplification for the case of a VEC_SELECT selecting the low part of a vector. The simplification returns a SUBREG. The primary goal of this patch is to enable better combinations of Neon RTL patterns - specifically allowing generation of 'write-to- high-half' narrowing intructions. Adding this RTL simplification means that the expected results for a number of tests need to be updated: * aarch64 Neon: Update the scan-assembler regex for intrinsics tests to expect a scalar register instead of lane 0 of a vector. * aarch64 SVE: Likewise. * arm MVE: Use lane 1 instead of lane 0 for lane-extraction intrinsics tests (as the move instructions get optimized away for lane 0.) This patch also adds new code generation tests to narrow_high_combine.c to verify the benefit of this RTL simplification. gcc/ChangeLog: 2021-06-08 Jonathan Wright <jonathan.wright@arm.com> * combine.c (combine_simplify_rtx): Add vec_select -> subreg simplification. * config/aarch64/aarch64.md (*zero_extend<SHORT:mode><GPI:mode>2_aarch64): Add Neon to general purpose register case for zero-extend pattern. * config/arm/vfp.md (*arm_movsi_vfp): Remove "*" from *t -> r case to prevent some cases opting to go through memory. * cse.c (fold_rtx): Add vec_select -> subreg simplification. * rtl.c (rtvec_series_p): Define predicate to determine whether a vector contains a linear series of integers. * rtl.h (rtvec_series_p): Define. * rtlanal.c (vec_series_lowpart_p): Define predicate to determine if a vector selection is equivalent to the low part of the vector. * rtlanal.h (vec_series_lowpart_p): Define. * simplify-rtx.c (simplify_context::simplify_binary_operation_1): Add vec_select -> subreg simplification. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gcc.target/aarch64/extract_zero_extend.c: Remove dump scan for RTL pattern match. * gcc.target/aarch64/narrow_high_combine.c: Add new tests. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vmulx_laneq_f64_1.c: Update scan-assembler regex to look for a scalar register instead of lane 0 of a vector. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vmulxd_laneq_f64_1.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vmulxs_lane_f32_1.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vmulxs_laneq_f32_1.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmlalh_lane_s16.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmlals_lane_s32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmlslh_lane_s16.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmlsls_lane_s32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmullh_lane_s16.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmullh_laneq_s16.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmulls_lane_s32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/simd/vqdmulls_laneq_s32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/sve/dup_lane_1.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/sve/extract_1.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/sve/extract_2.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/sve/extract_3.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/sve/extract_4.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/aarch64/sve/live_1.c: Update scan-assembler regex cases to look for 'b' and 'h' registers instead of 'w'. * gcc.target/arm/crypto-vsha1cq_u32.c: Update scan-assembler regex to reflect lane 0 vector extractions being simplified to scalar register moves. * gcc.target/arm/crypto-vsha1h_u32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/crypto-vsha1mq_u32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/crypto-vsha1pq_u32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_f16.c: Extract lane 1 as the moves for lane 0 now get optimized away. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_f32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_s16.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_s32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_s8.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_u16.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_u32.c: Likewise. * gcc.target/arm/mve/intrinsics/vgetq_lane_u8.c: Likewise.

This removes CC0 and all directly related infrastructure. CC_STATUS, CC_STATUS_MDEP, CC_STATUS_MDEP_INIT, and NOTICE_UPDATE_CC are deleted and poisoned. CC0 is only deleted (some targets use that name for something else). HAVE_cc0 is automatically generated, and we no longer will do that after this patch. CC_STATUS_INIT is suggested in final.c to also be useful for ports that are not CC0, and at least arm seems to use it for something. 2020-12-17simplify-rtx: Put simplify routines into a classRichard Sandiford1-18/+131
One of the recurring warts of RTL is that multiplication by a power of 2 is represented as a MULT inside a MEM but as an ASHIFT outside a MEM. It would obviously be better if we didn't have this kind of context sensitivity, but it would be difficult to remove. Currently the simplify-rtx.c routines are hard-coded for the ASHIFT form. This means that some callers have to convert the ASHIFTs “back” into MULTs after calling the simplify-rtx.c routines; see fwprop.c:canonicalize_address for an example. I think we can relieve some of the pain by wrapping the simplify-rtx.c routines in a simple class that tracks whether the expression occurs in a MEM or not, so that no post-processing is needed. An obvious concern is whether passing the “this” pointer around will slow things down or bloat the code. I can't measure any increase in compile time after applying the patch. Sizewise, simplify-rtx.o text increases by 2.3% in default-checking builds and 4.1% in release-checking builds. I realise the MULT/ASHIFT thing isn't the most palatable reason for doing this, but I think it might be useful for other things in future, such as using local nonzero_bits hooks/virtual functions instead of the global hooks. The obvious alternative would be to add a static variable and hope that it is always updated correctly. Later patches make use of this. gcc/ * rtl.h (simplify_context): New class. 2020-04-02cselib: Reuse VALUEs on sp adjustments [PR92264]Jakub Jelinek1-0/+1
As discussed in the PR, if !ACCUMULATE_OUTGOING_ARGS on large functions we can have hundreds of thousands of stack pointer adjustments and cselib creates a new VALUE after each sp adjustment, which form extremely deep VALUE chains, which is very harmful e.g. for find_base_term. E.g. if we have sp -= 4 sp -= 4 sp += 4 sp += 4 sp -= 4 sp += 4 that means 7 VALUEs, one for the sp at beginning (val1), than val2 = val1 - 4, then val3 = val2 - 4, then val4 = val3 + 4, then val5 = val4 + 4, then val6 = val5 - 4, then val7 = val6 + 4. This patch tweaks cselib, so that it is smarter about sp adjustments. When cselib_lookup (stack_pointer_rtx, Pmode, 1, VOIDmode) and we know nothing about sp yet (this happens at the start of the function, for non-var-tracking also after cselib_reset_table and for var-tracking after processing fp_setter insn where we forget about former sp values because that is now hfp related while everything after it is sp related), we look it up normally, but in addition to what we have been doing before we mark the VALUE as SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P. Further lookups of sp + offset are then special cased, so that it is canonicalized to that SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P VALUE + CONST_INT (if possible). So, for the above, we get val1 with SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P set, then val2 = val1 - 4, val3 = val1 - 8 (note, no longer val2 - 4!), then we get val2 again, val1 again, val2 again, val1 again. In the find_base_term visited_vals.length () > 100 find_base_term statistics during combined x86_64-linux and i686-linux bootstrap+regtest cycle, without the patch I see: find_base_term > 100 returning NULL returning non-NULL 32-bit compilations 4229178 407 64-bit compilations 217523 0 with largest visited_vals.length () when returning non-NULL being 206. With the patch the same numbers are: 32-bit compilations 1249588 135 64-bit compilations 3510 0 with largest visited_vals.length () when returning non-NULL being 173. This shows significant reduction of the deep VALUE chains. On powerpc64{,le}-linux, these stats didn't change at all, we have 1008 0 for all of -m32, -m64 and little-endian -m64, just the gcc.dg/pr85180.c and gcc.dg/pr87985.c testcases which are unrelated to sp. My earlier version of the patch, which contained just the rtl.h and cselib.c changes, regressed some tests: gcc.dg/guality/{pr36728-{1,3},pr68860-{1,2}}.c gcc.target/i386/{pr88416,sse-{13,23,24,25,26}}.c The problem with the former tests was worse debug info, where with -m32 where arg7 was passed in a stack slot we though a push later on might have invalidated it, when it couldn't. This is something I've solved with the var-tracking.c (vt_initialize) changes. In those problematic functions, we create a cfa_base VALUE (argp) and want to record that at the start of the function the argp VALUE is sp + off and also record that current sp VALUE is argp's VALUE - off. The second permanent equivalence didn't make it after the patch though, because cselib_add_permanent_equiv will cselib_lookup the value of the expression it wants to add as the equivalence and if it is the same VALUE as we are calling it on, it doesn't do anything; and due to the cselib changes for sp based accesses that is exactly what happened. By reversing the order of the cselib_add_permanent_equiv calls we get both equivalences though and thus are able to canonicalize the sp based accesses in var-tracking to the cfa_base value + offset. The i386 FAILs were all ICEs, where we had pushf instruction pushing flags and then pop pseudo reading that value again. With the cselib changes, cselib during RTL DSE is able to see through the sp adjustment and wanted to replace_read what was done pushf, by moving the flags register into a pseudo and replace the memory read in the pop with that pseudo. That is wrong for two reasons: one is that the backend doesn't have an instruction to move the flags hard register into some other register, but replace_read has been validating just the mem -> pseudo replacement and not the insns emitted by copy_to_mode_reg. And the second issue is that it is obviously wrong to replace a stack pop which contains stack post-increment by a copy of pseudo into destination. dse.c has some code to handle RTX_AUTOINC, but only uses it when actually removing stores and only when there is REG_INC note (stack RTX_AUTOINC does not have those), in check_for_inc_dec* where it emits the reg adjustment(s) before the insn that is going to be deleted. replace_read doesn't remove the insn, so if it e.g. contained REG_INC note, it would be kept there and we might have the RTX_AUTOINC not just in *loc, but other spots. So, the dse.c changes try to validate the added insns and punt on all RTX_AUTOINC in *loc. Furthermore, it seems that with the cselib.c changes on the gfortran.dg/pr87360.f90 and gcc.target/i386/pr88416.c testcases check_for_inc_dec{,_1} happily throws stack pointer autoinc on the floor, which is also wrong. While we could perhaps do the for_each_inc_dec call regardless of whether we have REG_INC note or not, we aren't prepared to handle e.g. REG_ARGS_SIZE distribution and thus could end up with wrong unwind info or ICEs during dwarf2cfi.c. So the patch also punts on those, after all, if we'd in theory managed to try to optimize such pushes before, we'd create wrong-code. On x86_64-linux and i686-linux, the patch has some minor debug info coverage differences, but it doesn't appear very significant to me. https://github.com/pmachata/dwlocstat tool gives (where before is vanilla trunk + the rtl.h patch but not {cselib,var-tracking,dse}.c --enable-checking=yes,rtl,extra bootstrapped, then {cselib,var-tracking,dse}.c hunks applied and make cc1plus, while after is trunk with the whole patch applied). 64-bit cc1plus before cov% samples cumul 0..10 1232756/48% 1232756/48% 11..20 31089/1% 1263845/49% 21..30 39172/1% 1303017/51% 31..40 38853/1% 1341870/52% 41..50 47473/1% 1389343/54% 51..60 45171/1% 1434514/56% 61..70 69393/2% 1503907/59% 71..80 61988/2% 1565895/61% 81..90 104528/4% 1670423/65% 91..100 875402/34% 2545825/100% after cov% samples cumul 0..10 1233238/48% 1233238/48% 11..20 31086/1% 1264324/49% 21..30 39157/1% 1303481/51% 31..40 38819/1% 1342300/52% 41..50 47447/1% 1389747/54% 51..60 45151/1% 1434898/56% 61..70 69379/2% 1504277/59% 71..80 61946/2% 1566223/61% 81..90 104508/4% 1670731/65% 91..100 875094/34% 2545825/100% 32-bit cc1plus before cov% samples cumul 0..10 1231221/48% 1231221/48% 11..20 30992/1% 1262213/49% 21..30 36422/1% 1298635/51% 31..40 35793/1% 1334428/52% 41..50 47102/1% 1381530/54% 51..60 41201/1% 1422731/56% 61..70 65467/2% 1488198/58% 71..80 59560/2% 1547758/61% 81..90 104076/4% 1651834/65% 91..100 881879/34% 2533713/100% after cov% samples cumul 0..10 1230469/48% 1230469/48% 11..20 30390/1% 1260859/49% 21..30 36362/1% 1297221/51% 31..40 36042/1% 1333263/52% 41..50 47619/1% 1380882/54% 51..60 41674/1% 1422556/56% 61..70 65849/2% 1488405/58% 71..80 59857/2% 1548262/61% 81..90 104178/4% 1652440/65% 91..100 881273/34% 2533713/100% 2020-04-02 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR rtl-optimization/92264 * rtl.h (struct rtx_def): Mention that call bit is used as SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P in cselib.c. * cselib.c (SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P): Define.
