So, if we want to make PCH work for PIEs, I'd say we can:
1) add a new GTY option, say callback, which would act like
skip for non-PCH and for PCH would make us skip it but
remember for address bias translation
2) drop the skip for tree_translation_unit_decl::language
3) change get_unnamed_section to have const char * as
last argument instead of const void *, change
unnamed_section::data also to const char * and update
everything related to that
4) maybe add a host hook whether it is ok to support binaries
changing addresses (the only thing I'm worried is if
some host that uses function descriptors allocates them
dynamically instead of having them somewhere in the
executable)
5) maybe add a gengtype warning if it sees in GTY tracked
structure a function pointer without that new callback
option
Here is 1), 2), 3) implemented.
Note, on stdc++.h.gch/O2g.gch there are just those 10 relocations without
the second patch, with it a few more, but nothing huge. And for non-PIEs
there isn't really any extra work on the load side except freading two scalar
values and fseek.

AIX symbol references can refer to either the symbol (a label) or a
symbol with a qualifier (the storage mapping class). The storage mapping
class provide information about the underlying COFF section into which the
symbol will be placed, e.g. [RO] for read-only in the text section,
[RW] for read-writer in the data section, or [BS] for the BSS section.
A label is distinct from a qualname in the assembler language, e.g.,
foo and foo[RW] are different, but the symbol table of an object file strips
the storage mapping class from the name, so that it no longer is relevant
when referring to symbols across object files and libraries.
.csect .data[RW]
i:
is a label "i" in the .data CSECT, which has storage mapping class [RW]
so that it is placed in the read-write COFF section.
.csect i[RW]
is a CSECT "i[RW]". BSS does not allow interior labels.
The AIX port of GCC had been emitting the storage mapping class where
appropriate but not consistently using the storage mapping class on
the DECL or SYM name. This patch updates the section encoding to properly
place storage mapping class on symbol names and remove the decorations
placed when emitting the symbol.
The mapping classes correspond to sections and the encoding choices must
exactly match the section choices made by get_section, so the logic for
the computation of reloc in get_variable_section is split into its own
function that XCOFF encode section info can call.

.section __patchable_function_entries,"awo",@progbits,foo
which specifies the symbol name which the section references. Assembler
creates a unique __patchable_function_entries section with the section,
where foo is defined, as its linked-to section. Linker keeps a section
if its linked-to section is kept during garbage collection.
This patch checks assembler support for the section flag 'o' and uses
it to implement __patchable_function_entries section. Since Solaris may
use GNU assembler with Solairs ld. Even if GNU assembler supports the
section flag 'o', it doesn't mean that Solairs ld supports it. This
feature is disabled for Solairs targets.

In assemly code, the section flag 'R' sets the SHF_GNU_RETAIN flag to
indicate that the section must be preserved by the linker.
Add SECTION_RETAIN to indicate a section should be retained by the linker
and set SECTION_RETAIN on section for the preserved symbol if assembler
supports SHF_GNU_RETAIN. All retained symbols are placed in separate
sections with

In AT&T syntax leading $ is special, so if we have identifiers that start
with dollar, we usually fail to assemble it (or assemble incorrectly).
As mentioned in the PR, what works is wrapping the identifiers inside of
parens, like:

(this is x86_64 -fno-pic -O2). In some places ($a) is not accepted,
like as .globl operand, in .type, .size, so the patch overrides
ASM_OUTPUT_SYMBOL_REF rather than e.g. ASM_OUTPUT_LABELREF.
I didn't want to duplicate what assemble_name is doing (following
transparent aliases), so split assemble_name into two parts; just
mere looking at the first character of a name before calling assemble_name
wouldn't be good enough, a transparent alias could lead from a name
not starting with $ to one starting with it and vice versa.

The command line option -fcallgraph-info is added and makes the
compiler generate another output file (xxx.ci) for each compilation
unit (or LTO partitoin), which is a valid VCG file (you can launch
your favorite VCG viewer on it unmodified) and contains the "final"
callgraph of the unit. "final" is a bit of a misnomer as this is
actually the callgraph at RTL expansion time, but since most
high-level optimizations are done at the Tree level and RTL doesn't
usually fiddle with calls, it's final in almost all cases. Moreover,
the nodes can be decorated with additional info: -fcallgraph-info=su
adds stack usage info and -fcallgraph-info=da dynamic allocation info.

Later patches will add support for frame sizes that are a run-time
invariant but not a compile-time constant. This then raised the
question of whether the frame size argument to the function_prologue/
epilogue hooks should be updated accordingly.
It turned out that only two targets actually used this argument, and
even they got other frame-related information from the cached machine
structure. This patch therefore removes the argument and makes the two
targets use get_frame_size () instead.

Uninitialized common symbol behavior in executables is target and linker
dependent. default_binds_local_p_3 is made public and updated to take an
argument to indicate if the linker can guarantee that an uninitialized
common symbol in the executable will still be defined (through COPY
relocation) in the executable. If common symbol is local to executable,
default_binds_local_p_3 will treat non-external variable as defined
locally. default_binds_local_p_2 is changed to treat common symbol as
local for non-PIE binaries.
For i386, common symbol is local only for non-PIE binaries. For x86-64,
common symbol is local only for non-PIE binaries or linker supports copy
reloc in PIE binaries. If a target treats common symbol as local only
for non-PIE binaries, it can define TARGET_BINDS_LOCAL_P as
default_binds_local_p_2.

Protected data symbol means that it can't be pre-emptied. It doesn't mean
its address won't be external. This is true for pointer to protected
function. With copy relocation, address of protected data defined in the
shared library may also be external. We only know that for sure at
run-time. TARGET_BINDS_LOCAL_P should return false on protected data
symbol.
