2021-12-13pch: Small cleanupJakub Jelinek1-1/+1
> Fixed thusly, compile tested on x86_64-linux, committed to trunk. Here is a small cleanup. IMHO we should use gt_pointer_operator instead of specifying manually void (*) (void *, void *) or void (*) (void *, void *, void *) so that next time we want to change it, we don't have to trace all the spots. I was afraid it wouldn't work due to header dependencies, but it works well. gengtype generated files also use gt_pointer_operator. 2021-12-13 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> * machmode.h (gt_pch_nx): Use gt_pointer_operator as type of second argument instead of equivalent void (*) (void *, void *, void *). * poly-int.h (gt_pch_nx): Likewise. * wide-int.h (gt_pch_nx): Likewise. * config/aarch64/aarch64-sve-builtins.cc (gt_pch_nx): Likewise.
2021-12-09pch: Add support for relocation of the PCH data [PR71934]Jakub Jelinek1-1/+1
The following patch adds support for relocation of the PCH blob on PCH restore if we don't manage to get the preferred map slot for it. The GTY stuff knows where all the pointers are, after all it relocates it once during PCH save from the addresses where it was initially allocated to addresses in the preferred map slot. But, if we were to do it solely using GTY info upon PCH restore, we'd need another set of GTY functions, which I think would make it less maintainable and I think it would also be more costly at PCH restore time. Those functions would need to call something to add bias to pointers that haven't been marked yet and make sure not to add bias to any pointer twice. So, this patch instead builds a relocation table (sorted list of addresses in the blob which needs relocation) at PCH save time, stores it in a very compact form into the gch file and upon restore, adjusts pointers in GTY roots (that is right away in the root structures) and the addresses in the relocation table. The cost on stdc++.gch/O2g.gch (previously 85MB large) is about 3% file size growth, there are 2.5 million pointers that need relocation in the gch blob and the relocation table uses uleb128 for address deltas and needs ~1.01 bytes for one address that needs relocation, and about 20% compile time during PCH save (I think it is mainly because of the need to qsort those 2.5 million pointers). On PCH restore, if it doesn't need relocation (the usual case), it is just an extra fread of sizeof (size_t) data and fseek (in my tests real time on vanilla tree for #include <bits/stdc++.h> CU was ~0.175s and with the patch but no relocation ~0.173s), while if it needs relocation it took ~0.193s, i.e. 11.5% slower. Without PCH that #include <bits/stdc++.h> int i; testcase compiles with -O2 -g in ~1.199s, i.e. 6.2 times slower than PCH with relocation and 6.9 times than PCH without relocation. The discovery of the pointers in the blob that need relocation is done in the relocate_ptrs hook which does the pointer relocation during PCH save. Unfortunately, I had to make one change to the gengtype stuff due to the nested_ptr feature of GTY, which some libcpp headers and stringpool.c use. The relocate_ptrs hook had 2 arguments, pointer to the pointer and a cookie. When relocate_ptrs is done, in most cases it is called solely on the subfields of the current object, so e.g. if ((void *)(x) == this_obj) op (&((*x).u.fld[0].rt_rtx), cookie); so relocate_ptrs can assert that ptr_p is within the state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->obj .. state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->obj+state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->size-sizeof(void*) range and compute from that the address in the blob which will need relocation (state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->new_addr is the new address given to it and ptr_p-state->ptrs[state->ptrs_i]->obj is the relative offset. Unfortunately, for nested_ptr gengtype emits something like: { union tree_node * x0 = ((*x).val.node.node) ? HT_IDENT_TO_GCC_IDENT (HT_NODE (((*x).val.node.node))) : NULL; if ((void *)(x) == this_obj) op (&(x0), cookie); (*x).val.node.node = (x0) ? CPP_HASHNODE (GCC_IDENT_TO_HT_IDENT ((x0))) : NULL; } so relocate_ptrs is called with an address of some temporary variable and so doesn't know where the pointer will finally be. So, I've added another argument to relocate_ptrs (and to gt_pointer_operator). For the most common case I pass NULL as the new middle argument to that function, first one remains pointer to the pointer that needs adjustment and last the cookie. The NULL seems to be cheap to compute and short in the gt*.[ch] files and stands for ptr_p is an address within the this_obj's range, remember its address. For the nested_ptr case, the new middle argument contains actual address of the pointer that might need to be relocated, so instead of the above op (&(x0), &((*x).val.node.node), cookie); in there. And finally, e.g. for the reorder case I need a way to tell restore_ptrs to ignore a particular address for the relocation purposes and only treat it the old way. I've used for that the case when the first and second arguments are equal. In order to enable support for mapping PCH as fallback at different addresses than the preferred ones, a small change is needed to the host pch_use_address hooks. One change I've done to all of them is the change of the type of the first argument from void * to void *&, such that the actual address can be told to the callers (or shall I instead use void **?), but another change that still needs to be done in them if they want the relocation is actually not fail if they couldn't get a preferred address, but instead modify what the first argument refers to. I've done that only for host-linux.c and Iain is testing similar change for host-darwin.c. Didn't change hpux, netbsd, openbsd, solaris, mingw32 or the fallbacks because I can't test those. Tested also with the: --- gcc/config/host-linux.c.jj 2021-12-06 22:22:42.007777367 +0100 +++ gcc/config/host-linux.c 2021-12-07 00:21:53.052674040 +0100 @@ -191,6 +191,8 @@ linux_gt_pch_use_address (void *&base, s if (size == 0) return -1; +base = (char *) base + ((size + 8191) & (size_t) -4096); + /* Try to map the file with MAP_PRIVATE. */ addr = mmap (base, size, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE, fd, offset); hack which forces all PCH restores to be relocated. 2020-12-31genmodes: Update GET_MODE_MASK when changing NUNITS [PR98214]Richard Sandiford1-1/+2
The static GET_MODE_MASKs for SVE vectors are based on the static precisions, which in turn are based on 128-bit SVE. The precisions are later updated based on -msve-vector-bits (usually to become variable length), but the GET_MODE_MASK stayed the same. 2020-11-17Add MODE_OPAQUEAaron Sawdey1-0/+4
After discussion with Richard Sandiford on IRC, he suggested adding a new mode class MODE_OPAQUE to deal with the problems (PR 96791) we had been having with POImode/PXImode in powerpc target. This patch is the accumulation of changes I needed to make to add this and make it useable for the purposes of what power10 MMA needed. MODE_OPAQUE modes allow you to have modes for which you can just define loads and stores. By design, optimization does not expect to know how to do arithmetic or subregs on these modes. This allows us to have modes for multi-register vector operations where we don't want to open Pandora's Box and define general arithmetic operations. This patch will be followed by a target specific patch to change the powerpc power10 MMA builtins to use opaque modes, and will also let use use the vector pair loads/stores defined with that in the inline expansion of memcpy/memmove, allowing me to fix PR 96791. gcc/ChangeLog PR target/96791 * mode-classes.def: Add MODE_OPAQUE. * machmode.def: Add OPAQUE_MODE. * tree.def: Add OPAQUE_TYPE for types that will use MODE_OPAQUE. * doc/generic.texi: Document OPAQUE_TYPE. * doc/rtl.texi: Document MODE_OPAQUE. * machmode.h: Add OPAQUE_MODE_P(). * genmodes.c (complete_mode): Add MODE_OPAQUE. 2019-11-14Support vectorisation with mixed vector sizesRichard Sandiford1-0/+3
After previous patches, it's now possible to make the vectoriser support multiple vector sizes in the same vector region, using related_vector_mode to pick the right vector mode for a given element mode. No port yet takes advantage of this, but I have a follow-on patch for AArch64. This patch also seemed like a good opportunity to add some more dump messages: one to make it clear which vector size/mode was being used when analysis passed or failed, and another to say when we've decided to skip a redundant vector size/mode. 2019-11-14 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * machmode.h (opt_machine_mode::operator==): New function. 2019-11-14Replace mode_for_int_vector with related_int_vector_modeRichard Sandiford1-14/+1
mode_for_int_vector, like mode_for_vector, can sometimes return an integer mode or an unsupported vector mode. But no callers are interested in that case, and only want supported vector modes. This patch therefore replaces mode_for_int_vector with related_int_vector_mode, which gives the target a chance to pick its preferred vector mode for the given element mode and size. 2019-11-14 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * machmode.h (mode_for_int_vector): Delete. 2019-11-14Add a targetm.vectorize.related_mode hookRichard Sandiford1-0/+2
This patch is the first of a series that tries to remove two assumptions: (1) that all vectors involved in vectorisation must be the same size (2) that there is only one vector mode for a given element mode and number of elements Relaxing (1) helps with targets that support multiple vector sizes or that require the number of elements to stay the same. E.g. if we're vectorising code that operates on narrow and wide elements, and the narrow elements use 64-bit vectors, then on AArch64 it would normally be better to use 128-bit vectors rather than pairs of 64-bit vectors for the wide elements. Relaxing (2) makes it possible for -msve-vector-bits=128 to produce fixed-length code for SVE. It also allows unpacked/half-size SVE vectors to work with -msve-vector-bits=256. The patch adds a new hook that targets can use to control how we move from one vector mode to another. The hook takes a starting vector mode, a new element mode, and (optionally) a new number of elements. The flexibility needed for (1) comes in when the number of elements isn't specified. All callers in this patch specify the number of elements, but a later vectoriser patch doesn't. 2019-11-14 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * target.def (related_mode): New hook. * doc/tm.texi.in (TARGET_VECTORIZE_RELATED_MODE): New hook. * doc/tm.texi: Regenerate. * targhooks.h (default_vectorize_related_mode): Declare. * targhooks.c (default_vectorize_related_mode): New function. * machmode.h (related_vector_mode): Declare. * stor-layout.c (related_vector_mode): New function. * expmed.c (extract_bit_field_1): Use it instead of mode_for_vector. * optabs-query.c (qimode_for_vec_perm): Likewise. * tree-vect-stmts.c (get_group_load_store_type): Likewise. 2019-08-13[AArch64] Improve SVE constant movesRichard Sandiford1-4/+5
If there's no SVE instruction to load a given constant directly, this patch instead tries to use an Advanced SIMD constant move and then duplicates the constant to fill an SVE vector. The main use of this is to support constants in which each byte is in { 0, 0xff }. Also, the patch prefers a simple integer move followed by a duplicate over a load from memory, like we already do for Advanced SIMD. This is a useful option to have and would be easy to turn off via a tuning parameter if necessary. The patch also extends the handling of wide LD1Rs to big endian, whereas previously we punted to a full LD1RQ. 2019-08-13 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * machmode.h (opt_mode::else_mode): New function. 2018-01-03Add support for MODE_VECTOR_BOOLRichard Sandiford1-2/+4
This patch adds a new mode class to represent vectors of booleans. GET_MODE_BITSIZE (m) / GET_MODE_NUNITS (m) determines the number of bits that are used to represent each boolean; this can be 1 for a fully-packed representation or greater than 1 for an unpacked representation. In the latter case, the value of bits other than the lowest is not significant. 2017-12-16poly_int: MACRO_MODERichard Sandiford1-0/+11
This patch uses a MACRO_MODE wrapper for the target macro invocations in targhooks.c and address.h, so that macros for non-AArch64 targets can continue to treat modes as fixed-size. It didn't seem worth converting the address macros to hooks since (a) they're heavily used, (b) they should be probably be replaced with a different interface rather than converted to hooks as-is, and most importantly (c) addresses.h already localises the problem. 2017-12-16 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * machmode.h (MACRO_MODE): New macro. * addresses.h (base_reg_class, ok_for_base_p_1): Use it. * targhooks.c (default_libcall_value, default_secondary_reload) (default_memory_move_cost, default_register_move_cost) (default_class_max_nregs): Likewise. 2017-11-01Add a fixed_size_mode classRichard Sandiford1-0/+33
This patch adds a fixed_size_mode machine_mode wrapper for modes that are known to have a fixed size. That applies to all current modes, but future patches will add support for variable-sized modes. The use of this class should be pretty restricted. One important use case is to hold the mode of static data, which can never be variable-sized with current file formats. Another is to hold the modes of registers involved in __builtin_apply and __builtin_result, since those interfaces don't cope well with variable-sized data. The class can also be useful when reinterpreting the contents of a fixed-length bit string as a different kind of value. 2017-11-01 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * machmode.h (fixed_size_mode): New class. * rtl.h (get_pool_mode): Return fixed_size_mode. * gengtype.c (main): Add fixed_size_mode. * target.def (get_raw_result_mode): Return a fixed_size_mode. 2017-09-05Add mode_for_int_vector helper functionsRichard Sandiford1-0/+15
There are at least a few places that want to create an integer vector with a specified element size and element count, or to create the integer equivalent of an existing mode. 2017-09-05Make mode_for_size return an opt_modeRichard Sandiford1-5/+26
...to make it consistent with int_mode_for_size etc. require () seems like the right choice in replace_reg_with_saved_mem because we use the chosen mode for saving and restoring registers, which cannot be done in BLKmode. Similarly require () seems like the right choice in calls related to secondary memory reloads (the ones in config/, and in get_secondary_mem) because the reload must always have a defined mode, which e.g. determines the size of the slot. We can use require () in simplify_subreg_concatn and assemble_integer because it isn't meaningful to create a subreg with BLKmode (for one thing, we couldn't tell then whether it was partial, paradoxical, etc.). make_fract_type and make_accum_type must find a mode because that's what distinguishes accumulator FIXED_POINT_TYPEs from fractional FIXED_POINT_TYPEs. 2017-09-05 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * machmode.h (opt_machine_mode): New type. 2017-08-30[39/77] Two changes to the get_best_mode interfaceRichard Sandiford1-7/+5
get_best_mode always returns a scalar_int_mode on success, so this patch makes that explicit in the type system. Also, the "largest_mode" argument is used simply to provide a maximum size, and in practice that size is always a compile-time constant, even when the concept of variable-sized modes is added later. The next patches in the series gradually replace more uses. The patch also removes and adds casts to some target-specific code due to the new types of SImode, DImode and Pmode. 2017-08-30[6/77] Make GET_MODE_WIDER return an opt_modeRichard Sandiford1-9/+83
GET_MODE_WIDER previously returned VOIDmode if no wider mode existed. That would cause problems with stricter mode classes, since VOIDmode isn't for example a valid scalar integer or floating-point mode. This patch instead makes it return a new opt_mode<T> class, which holds either a T or nothing. 2017-08-30 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * coretypes.h (opt_mode): New class. * machmode.h (opt_mode): Likewise.
