After discussion with Richard Sandiford on IRC, he suggested adding a
new mode class MODE_OPAQUE to deal with the problems (PR 96791) we had
been having with POImode/PXImode in powerpc target. This patch is the
accumulation of changes I needed to make to add this and make it useable
for the purposes of what power10 MMA needed.
MODE_OPAQUE modes allow you to have modes for which you can just
define loads and stores. By design, optimization does not expect to
know how to do arithmetic or subregs on these modes. This allows us to
have modes for multi-register vector operations where we don't want to
open Pandora's Box and define general arithmetic operations.
This patch will be followed by a target specific patch to change the
powerpc power10 MMA builtins to use opaque modes, and will also let use
use the vector pair loads/stores defined with that in the inline expansion
of memcpy/memmove, allowing me to fix PR 96791.

As PR97705 shows, the commit r11-4637 caused some dumping
comparison difference error on pass ira. It exposed one
issue about the newly introduced function remove_scratches,
which can increase the largest pseudo reg number if it
succeeds, later some function will use the max_reg_num()
to get the latest max_regno, when iterating the numbers
we can access some data structures which are allocated as
the previous max_regno, some out of array bound accesses
can occur, the failure can be random since the values
beyond the array could be random.
This patch is to free/reinit/recompute the relevant data
structures that is regstat_n_sets_and_refs and reg_info_p
to ensure we won't access beyond some array bounds.
Bootstrapped/regtested on powerpc64le-linux-gnu P9 and
powerpc64-linux-gnu P8.
gcc/ChangeLog:
PR rtl-optimization/97705
* ira.c (ira): Refactor some regstat free/init/compute invocation
into lambda function regstat_recompute_for_max_regno, and call it

The patch changes insn scratches which require registers for all
insn alternatives (in other words w/o X constraint in scratch
constraint string). This is done before IRA staring its work. LRA
still continue to change the rest scratches (with X constraint and in
insn created during IRA) into pseudos. As before the patch at the end

chosen) changed into scratches back.

If the hard frame pointer is being used as a global register,
we should skip the usual handling for eliminations. As the
comment says, the register cannot in that case be eliminated
(or eliminated to) and is already marked live where appropriate.
Doing this removes the duplicate error for gcc.target/i386/pr82673.c.
The “cannot be used in 'asm' here” message is meant to be for asm
statements rather than register asms, and the function that the
error is reported against doesn't use asm.

The AArch64 SVE tlsdesc patterns were the main motivating reason
for clobber_high. It's no longer needed now that the patterns use
calls instead.
At the time, one of the possible future uses for clobber_high was for
asm statements. However, the current code wouldn't handle that case
without modification, so I think we might as well remove it for now.
We can always reapply it in future if it turns out to be useful again.

If we support multiple ABIs in the same translation unit, it can
sometimes be the case that a callee clobbers more registers than
its caller is allowed to. We need to call df_set_regs_ever_live
on these extra registers so that the prologue and epilogue code
can handle them appropriately.
This patch does that in IRA. I wanted to avoid another full
instruction walk just for this, so I combined it with the existing
set_paradoxical_subreg walk. This happens before the first
calculation of elimination offsets.

For -fipa-ra, IRA already keeps track of which specific registers
are call-clobbered in a region, rather than using global information.
The patch generalises this so that it tracks which ABIs are used
by calls in the region.
We can then use the new ABI descriptors to handle partially-clobbered
registers in the same way as fully-clobbered registers, without having
special code for targetm.hard_regno_call_part_clobbered. This in turn
makes -fipa-ra work for partially-clobbered registers too.
A side-effect of allowing multiple ABIs is that we no longer have
an obvious set of conflicting registers for the self-described
"fragile hack" in ira-constraints.c. This code kicks in for
user-defined registers that aren't live across a call at -O0,
and it tries to avoid allocating a call-clobbered register to them.
Here I've used the set of call-clobbered registers in the current
function's ABI, applying on top of any registers that are clobbered by
called functions. This is enough to keep gcc.dg/debug/dwarf2/pr5948.c
happy.
The handling of GENERIC_STACK_CHECK in do_reload seemed to have
a reversed condition:
for (int i = 0; i < FIRST_PSEUDO_REGISTER; i++)
if (df_regs_ever_live_p (i)
&& !fixed_regs[i]
&& call_used_or_fixed_reg_p (i))
size += UNITS_PER_WORD;
The final part of the condition counts registers that don't need to be
saved in the prologue, but I think the opposite was intended.

Similarly to the call_used_or_fixed_regs patch, this one replaces
tests of call_used_regs[i] with call_used_or_fixed_reg_p (i).
The only remaining direct uses of call_used_regs are in reginfo.c
and in the conditional register usage hooks.
Again, this is purely mechanical. A later patch will clear up the
oddities in config/ code.

CALL_USED_REGISTERS and call_used_regs infamously contain all fixed
registers (hence the need for CALL_REALLY_USED_REGISTERS etc.).
We try to recover from this to some extent with:
/* Contains 1 for registers that are set or clobbered by calls. */
/* ??? Ideally, this would be just call_used_regs plus global_regs, but
for someone's bright idea to have call_used_regs strictly include
fixed_regs. Which leaves us guessing as to the set of fixed_regs
that are actually preserved. We know for sure that those associated
with the local stack frame are safe, but scant others. */
HARD_REG_SET x_regs_invalidated_by_call;
Since global registers are added to fixed_reg_set and call_used_reg_set
too, it's always the case that:
call_used_reg_set == regs_invalidated_by_call | fixed_reg_set
This patch replaces all uses of call_used_reg_set with a new macro
call_used_or_fixed_regs to make this clearer.
This is part of a series that allows call_used_regs to be what is
now call_really_used_regs. It's a purely mechanical replacement;
later patches clean up obvious oddities like
"call_used_or_fixed_regs & ~fixed_regs".

I have a series of patches that (as a side effect) makes all rtl
passes use the information collected by -fipa-ra. This showed up a
latent bug in the liveness tracking in regrename.c, which doesn't take
CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE into account when processing clobbers.
This actually seems to be quite a common problem with passes that use
note_stores; only a handful remember to walk CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE
too. I think it was just luck that I saw it with regrename first.
This patch tries to make things more robust by passing an insn rather
than a pattern to note_stores. The old function is still available
as note_pattern_stores for the few places that need it.
When updating callers, I've erred on the side of using note_stores
rather than note_pattern_stores, because IMO note_stores should be
the default choice and we should only use note_pattern_stores if
there's a specific reason. Specifically:
* For cselib.c, "body" may be a COND_EXEC_CODE instead of the main
insn pattern.
* For ira.c, I wasn't sure whether extending no_equiv to
CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE really made sense, since we don't do that
for normal call-clobbered registers. Same for mark_not_eliminable
in reload1.c
* Some other places only have a pattern available, and since those
places wouldn't benefit from walking CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE,
it seemed better to alter the code as little as possible.
* In the config/ changes, quite a few callers have already weeded
out CALL insns. It still seemed better to use note_stores rather
than prematurely optimise. (note_stores should tail call to
note_pattern_stores once it sees that the insn isn't a call.)
The patch also documents what SETs mean in CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE.

ira_get_dup_out_num punted on operands that are matched to
earlyclobber outputs:
/* It is better ignore an alternative with early clobber. */
else if (*str == '&')
goto fail;
But I'm not sure why this is the right thing to do. At this stage
we've established that *all* alternatives of interest require the
input to match the output, so
(a) the earlyclobber can only affect other operands and
(b) not tying the registers is bound to introduce a move
The code was part of the initial commit and so isn't obviously
related to a specific testcase. Also, I can imagine LRA makes
a much better job of this situation than reload did. (Certainly
SVE uses matched earlyclobbers extensively and I haven't seen any
problems.)
In case this turns out to regress something important: the main
case that matters for SVE is the one in which all alternatives
are earlyclobber.
2019-07-01 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com>

SVE has a prefix instruction (MOVPRFX) that acts as a move but is
designed to be easily fusible with the following instruction. The SVE
port therefore has lots of patterns with constraints of the form:
A: operand 0: =w,?w
...
operand n: 0, w
where the first alternative is a single instruction and the second
alternative uses MOVPRFX.
Ideally we want operand n to be allocated to the same register as
operand 0 in this case.
add_insn_allocno_copies is the main IRA routine that deals with tied
operands. It is (rightly) very conservative, and only handles cases in
which we're confident about saving a full move. So for a pattern like:
B: operand 0: =w,w
...
operand n: 0,w
we don't (and shouldn't) assume that tying operands 0 and n would
save the cost of a move.
But in A, the second alternative has a ? marker, which makes it more
expensive than the first alternative by a full reload. So I think for
copy elision we should ignore the untied operand n in the second
alternative of A.
One approach would be to add '*' markers to each pattern and make
ira_get_dup_out_num honour them. But I think the rule applies on
first principles, so marking with '*' shouldn't be necessary.
This patch instead makes ira_get_dup_out_num ignore expensive
alternatives if there are other alternatives that match exactly.
The cheapest way of doing that seemed to be to take expensive
alternatives out of consideration in ira_setup_alts, which provides
a bitmask of alternatives and has all the information available.
add_insn_allocno_copies is the only current user of ira_setup_alts,
so no other code should be affected.
If all available alternatives are disparaged or need a reload,
there's not much we can do to cut them down at this stage,
since it's hard to predict which operands will be reloaded and
which registers will need to be spilled.
An interesting case is patterns like this msp430 one:
;; Alternatives 2 and 3 are to handle cases generated by reload.
(define_insn "subqi3"
[(set (match_operand:QI 0 "nonimmediate_operand" "=rYs, rm, &?r, ?&r")
(minus:QI (match_operand:QI 1 "general_operand" "0, 0, !r, !i")
(match_operand:QI 2 "general_operand" " riYs, rmi, rmi, r")))]
""
"@
SUB.B\t%2, %0
SUB%X0.B\t%2, %0
MOV%X0.B\t%1, %0 { SUB%X0.B\t%2, %0
MOV%X0.B\t%1, %0 { SUB%X0.B\t%2, %0"
)
Here alternative 3 is significantly more expensive then alternative 0
(reject costs 0 and 606 respectively). But if operand 1 is an integer
constant, we'll still use alternative 3 if operand 2 is an allocated
register. On the other hand, if operand 1 is an integer constant but
operand 2 is spilled to memory, we'll move the constant into a register
and use the first alternative.
So in this case, if operand 1 is a register, we should consider
only the first two alternatives and thus try to tie operand 1
to operand 0 (which we didn't do previously). If operand 1 is a
constant integer, we should consider at least alternatives 0, 1 and 3.
We could exclude alternative 2, but I don't have any evidence that
that's useful.
2019-07-01 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com>
gcc/
* ira.c (ira_setup_alts): If any valid alternatives have zero cost,

ira_setup_alts has its own code to calculate the start of the
constraint string for each operand/alternative combination,
but preprocess_constraints now provides that information in (almost)
constant time for non-asm instructions. Using it here should speed
up the common case at the cost of potentially slowing down the handling
of asm statements.
The real reason for doing this is that a later patch wants to use
more of the operand_alternative information.
2019-07-01 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com>
gcc/
* ira.c (ira_setup_alts): Use preprocess_constraints to get the

'%' at the start of constraint strings, and look for it outside
the main loop.

add_insn_allocno_copies and its subroutines used HARD_REG_SET to
represent a bitmask of alternatives. There's not really any connection
between the number of registers and the maximum number of alternatives,
so this patch uses alternative_mask instead (which wasn't around when
this code was added).
This is just a minor clean-up making way for later patches.

This patch changes SUBREG_BYTE from an int to a poly_int.
Since valid SUBREG_BYTEs must be contained within the mode of the
SUBREG_REG, the required range is the same as for GET_MODE_SIZE,
i.e. unsigned short. The patch therefore uses poly_uint16(_pod)
for the SUBREG_BYTE.
Using poly_uint16_pod rtx fields requires a new field code ('p').
Since there are no other uses of 'p' besides SUBREG_BYTE, the patch
doesn't add an XPOLY or whatever; all uses should go via SUBREG_BYTE
instead.
The patch doesn't bother implementing 'p' support for legacy
define_peepholes, since none of the remaining ones have subregs
in their patterns.
As it happened, the rtl documentation used SUBREG as an example of a
code with mixed field types, accessed via XEXP (x, 0) and XINT (x, 1).
Since there's no direct replacement for XINT, and since people should
never use it even if there were, the patch changes the example to use
INT_LIST instead.
The patch also changes subreg-related helper functions so that they too
take and return polynomial offsets. This makes the patch quite big, but
it's mostly mechanical. The patch generally sticks to existing choices
wrt signedness.

Normmaly the IRA-reload interface tries to track the liveness of
individual bytes of an allocno if the allocno is sometimes written
to as a SUBREG. This isn't possible for variable-sized allocnos,
but it doesn't matter because targets with variable-sized registers
should use LRA instead.
This patch adds a get_subreg_tracking_sizes function for deciding
whether it is possible to model a partial read or write. Later
patches make it return false if anything is variable.

This patch introduces a number of new macros and functions that will
be used to distinguish between different kinds of debug stmts, insns
and notes, namely, preexisting debug bind ones and to-be-introduced
nonbind markers.
In a seemingly mechanical way, it adjusts several uses of the macros
and functions, so that they refer to narrower categories when
appropriate.
These changes, by themselves, should not have any visible effect in
the compiler behavior, since the upcoming debug markers are never
created with this patch alone.
