We were not consistently traversing method declarations, which appear if there is a method without a body. The gc compiler rejects that case, but gofrontend currently permits it. Maybe that should change, but not today. This avoids a compiler crash if there are method declarations with types that require specific functions. I didn't bother with a test case because a program with method declarations is almost certainly invalid anyhow. Since diagnostic.h is included in over half of the sources, requiring to `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` does not make sense. Instead lets unconditionally include memory in system.h. The majority of this patch is just removing `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` from the sources which currently have it. This should also fix the mingw build issue but I have not tried it. Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu. I've tried to build stage3 with -Wleading-whitespace=blanks -Wtrailing-whitespace=blank -Wno-error=leading-whitespace=blanks -Wno-error=trailing-whitespace=blank added to STRICT_WARN and that expectably resulted in about 2744 unique trailing whitespace warnings and 124837 leading whitespace warnings when excluding *.md files (which obviously is in big part a generator issue). Others from that are generator related, I think those need to be solved later. The following patch just fixes up the easy case (trailing whitespace), which could be easily automated: for i in `find . -name \*.h -o -name \*.cc -o -name \*.c | xargs grep -l '[ ]$' | grep -v testsuite/`; do sed -i -e 's/[ ]*$//' $i; done I've excluded files which I knew are obviously generated or go FE. Is there anything else we'd want to avoid the changes? My forthcoming patches for PR other/116613 make much more use of cloning of pretty_printers than before, so it makes sense as a preliminary patch for the result of pretty_printer::clone to be a std::unique_ptr, rather than add more manual uses of "delete". On doing so, I noticed various other places where naked new/delete is used for run-time configuration of diagnostics: * the output format (text vs SARIF) * client data hooks * the option manager * the URLifier Hence this patch also makes use of std::unique_ptr and ::make_unique for managing such client policy classes, and also for diagnostic_buffer's per-format implementations. Unfortunately we can't directly include <memory> in our internal headers but instead any of our TUs that make use of std::unique_ptr must #define INCLUDE_MEMORY before including system.h. Hence the bulk of this patch is taken up with adding a define of INCLUDE_MEMORY to hundreds of source files: everything that includes diagnostic.h or pretty-print.h (and thus anything transitively such as includers of lto-wrapper.h, c-tree.h, cp-tree.h and rtl-ssa.h). The documentation of gfortran options uses @code wrappings for arguments to @opindex. This is superfluous, as 'op' index is a texinfo 'code' index, that is it already implicitly formats its arguments as if in a @code block. The superfluous wrapping has the effect of creating a nested <code class="..."> tag inside the regular automatic <code> tag, in the option index HTML page, preventing the recognition of the corresponding option by the option URL generation script. This change removes those superfluous @code wrappings. Additionally, variables appearing as separate argument in index are removed, permitting a few more URL recognition. Finally, the URL files are regenerated with the new URLs recognized on the updated HTML files. By the way, a spurious 'option' is removed from the label of the std= option in the index, without any effect on URL recognition. This only happens when Solaris ld is in use. gccgo passes -t to the linker in that case, but does it unconditionally, even with -v. When configured to use GNU ld, gccgo -v is fine instead. This patch avoids this by restricting the -t to actually linking. 2023-12-18compiler: move lowering pass after check types passIan Lance Taylor13-1595/+4034
This change moves the lowering pass after the type determination and the type checking passes. This lets us simplify some of the code that determines the type of an expression, which previously had to work correctly both before and after type determination. I'm doing this to help with future generic support. For example, with generics, we can see code like func ident[T any](v T) T { return v } func F() int32 { s := int32(1) return ident(s) } Before this change, we would type check return statements in the lowering pass (see Return_statement::do_lower). With a generic example like the above, that means we have to determine the type of s, and use that to infer the type arguments passed to ident, and use that to determine the result type of ident. That is too much to do at lowering time. Of course we can change the way that return statements work, but similar issues arise with index expressions, the types of closures for function literals, and probably other cases as well. Rather than try to deal with all those cases, we move the lowering pass after type checking. This requires a bunch of changes, notably for determining constant types. We have to add type checking for various constructs that formerly disappeared in the lowering pass. So it's a lot of shuffling. Sorry for the size of the patch.
