I've tried to build stage3 with
-Wleading-whitespace=blanks -Wtrailing-whitespace=blank -Wno-error=leading-whitespace=blanks -Wno-error=trailing-whitespace=blank
added to STRICT_WARN and that expectably resulted in about
2744 unique trailing whitespace warnings and 124837 leading whitespace
warnings when excluding *.md files (which obviously is in big part a
generator issue). Others from that are generator related, I think those
need to be solved later.
The following patch just fixes up the easy case (trailing whitespace),
which could be easily automated:
for i in `find . -name \*.h -o -name \*.cc -o -name \*.c | xargs grep -l '[ ]$' | grep -v testsuite/`; do sed -i -e 's/[ ]*$//' $i; done
I've excluded files which I knew are obviously generated or go FE.
Is there anything else we'd want to avoid the changes?
Due to patch size, I've split it between gcc/ part (this patch)
and rest (include/, libiberty/, libgcc/, libcpp/, libstdc++-v3/).

Array bounds checking is currently tied to VRP. This causes issues with
using laternate VRP algorithms as well as experimenting with moving
the location of the warnings later. This moves it to its own pass
and cleans up the vrp_pass object.

Now that pointers and integers have been disambiguated from irange,
and all the pointer range temporaries use prange, we can reclaim
value_range as a general purpose range container.
This patch removes the typedef, in favor of int_range_max, thus
providing slightly better ranges in places. I have also used
int_range<1> or <2> when it's known ahead of time how big the range will
be, thus saving a few words.
In a follow-up patch I will rename the Value_Range temporary to
value_range.
No change in performance.

This patch converts the users of the legacy API to a function called
get_legacy_range() which will return the pieces of the soon to be
removed API (min, max, and kind). This is a temporary measure while
these users are converted.
In upcoming patches I will convert most users, but most of the
middle-end warning uses will remain. Naive attempts to remove them
showed that a lot of these uses are quite dependant on the anti-range
idiom, and converting them to the new API broke the tests, even when
the conversion was conceptually correct. Perhaps someone who
understands these passes could take a stab at it. In the meantime,
the legacy uses can be trivially found by grepping for
get_legacy_range.

'-Wstrict-flex-arrays'
Warn about inproper usages of flexible array members according to
the LEVEL of the 'strict_flex_array (LEVEL)' attribute attached to
the trailing array field of a structure if it's available,
otherwise according to the LEVEL of the option
'-fstrict-flex-arrays=LEVEL'.
This option is effective only when LEVEL is bigger than 0.
Otherwise, it will be ignored with a warning.
when LEVEL=1, warnings will be issued for a trailing array
reference of a structure that have 2 or more elements if the
trailing array is referenced as a flexible array member.
when LEVEL=2, in addition to LEVEL=1, additional warnings will be
issued for a trailing one-element array reference of a structure if
the array is referenced as a flexible array member.
when LEVEL=3, in addition to LEVEL=2, additional warnings will be
issued for a trailing zero-length array reference of a structure if
the array is referenced as a flexible array member.

A. add the following to clarify the relationship between -Warray-bounds
and the LEVEL of -fstrict-flex-array:
By default, the trailing array of a structure will be treated as a
flexible array member by '-Warray-bounds' or '-Warray-bounds=N' if
it is declared as either a flexible array member per C99 standard
onwards ('[]'), a GCC zero-length array extension ('[0]'), or an
one-element array ('[1]'). As a result, out of bounds subscripts
or offsets into zero-length arrays or one-element arrays are not
warned by default.
You can add the option '-fstrict-flex-arrays' or
'-fstrict-flex-arrays=LEVEL' to control how this option treat
trailing array of a structure as a flexible array member.
when LEVEL<=1, no change to the default behavior.
when LEVEL=2, additional warnings will be issued for out of bounds
subscripts or offsets into one-element arrays;
when LEVEL=3, in addition to LEVEL=2, additional warnings will be
issued for out of bounds subscripts or offsets into zero-length
arrays.
B. change -Warray-bounds=2 to exclude its control on how to treat
trailing arrays as flexible array members:
'-Warray-bounds=2'
This warning level also warns about the intermediate results
of pointer arithmetic that may yield out of bounds values.
This warning level may give a larger number of false positives
and is deactivated by default.

According to the documentation, the -Werror= option makes the specified
warning into an error and also automatically implies that option. Then
it seems that the behavior of the compiler when specifying
-Werror=array-bounds=X should be the same as specifying
"-Werror=array-bounds -Warray-bounds=X", so we expect to receive
array-bounds pass diagnostics and they must be processed as errors.
In practice, we observe that the array-bounds pass is indeed invoked,
but its diagnostics are processed as warnings, not errors.
This happens because Warray-bounds and Warray-bounds= are
declared as two different options in common.opt, so when
diagnostic_classify_diagnostic is called, DK_ERROR is set for
the Warray-bounds= option, but diagnostic_report_diagnostic called from
warning_at receives opt_index of Warray-bounds, so information about
DK_ERROR is lost. Fix this by using Alias in declaration of
Warray-bounds (similar to Wattribute-alias).

The name of the utility routine "array_at_struct_end_p" is misleading
and should be changed to a new name that more accurately reflects its
real meaning.
The routine "array_at_struct_end_p" is used to check whether an array
reference is to an array whose actual size might be larger than its
upper bound implies, which includes 3 different cases:
A. a ref to a flexible array member at the end of a structure;
B. a ref to an array with a different type against the original decl;
C. a ref to an array that was passed as a parameter;
The old name only reflects the above case A, therefore very confusing
when reading the corresponding gcc source code.
In this patch, A new name "array_ref_flexible_size_p" is used to replace
the old name.
All the references to the routine "array_at_struct_end_p" was replaced
with this new name, and the corresponding comments were updated to make
them clean and consistent.

I have changed the use of the array_bounds_checker in VRP to use a
ranger in my local tree to make sure there are no regressions when using
either VRP or the ranger. In doing so I noticed that the checker
does not pass context to get_value_range, which causes the ranger to miss a
few cases. This patch fixes the oversight.
Tested on x86-64 Linux using the array bounds checker both with VRP and
the ranger.

check_mem_ref builds artificial arrays for variables that don't have
array type.
The C standard says:
"For the purposes of these operators, a pointer to an object that is not an element of an
array behaves the same as a pointer to the first element of an array of length one with the
type of the object as its element type."
so it isn't completely wrong and does simplify the function.
But, layout_type can fail if the size of the element type is not a multiple
of its alignment (i.e. overaligned types) and we then ICE because of that.
The following patch uses TYPE_MAIN_VARIANT in those cases instead, but only
for the types that need it, as for the diagnostics it is better to use the
typedef names etc. that were really used in the source if possible.
