sol2.h may define LINK_PIE_SPEC and leave LD_PIE_SPEC undefined, but
gcc.cc will only provide a LD_PIE_SPEC definition if LINK_PIE_SPEC is

Previously our JSON output emitted the JSON all on one line, with
no indentation to show the structure of the values.
Although it's easy to reformat such output (e.g. with
"python -m json.tool"), I've found it's a pain to need to do so
e.g. my text editor sometimes hangs when opening a multimegabyte
json file all on one line. Similarly diff-ing is easier if the
json is already formatted.
This patch add whitespace to json output to show the structure.
It turned out to be fairly easy to implement using pretty_printer's
existing indentation machinery.
The patch uses this formatting for the various JSON-based diagnostic
output formats.
For example, with this patch, the output from
fdiagnostics-format=json-stderr looks like:
[{"kind": "warning",
"message": "stack-based buffer overflow",
"option": "-Wanalyzer-out-of-bounds",

I was able to update almost all of our DejaGnu test cases for JSON to
handle this format tweak, and IMHO it improved the readability of these
test cases, but a couple were more awkward. Hence I added
-fno-diagnostics-json-formatting as an option to disable this
formatting.
The formatting does not affect the output of -fsave-optimization-record
or the JSON output from gcov (but this could be enabled if desirable).

On IRC Iain mentioned bootstrap is broken for him presumably since
r14-5791 -fhardened addition. I think it is only a problem with
--enable-default-pie when the case OPT_pie: wants to fall through
into case OPT_r: and warns.
Before the patch validated = true; was set up if ENABLE_DEFAULT_PIE
for OPT_pie, and for -fhardened as documented I think we want to
set any_link_options_p = true; for it too:
/* True if -r, -shared, -pie, or -no-pie were specified on the command
line. */
static bool any_link_options_p;
2023-12-06 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com>
* gcc.cc (driver_handle_option): Add /* FALLTHROUGH */ comment
between OPT_pie and OPT_r cases.

In <https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2023-August/628748.html>
I proposed -fhardened, a new umbrella option that enables a reasonable set
of hardening flags. The read of the room seems to be that the option
would be useful. So here's a patch implementing that option.
Currently, -fhardened enables:
-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=3 (or =2 for older glibcs)
-D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS
-ftrivial-auto-var-init=zero
-fPIE -pie -Wl,-z,relro,-z,now
-fstack-protector-strong
-fstack-clash-protection
-fcf-protection=full (x86 GNU/Linux only)
-fhardened will not override options that were specified on the command line
(before or after -fhardened). For example,
-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=1 -fhardened
means that _FORTIFY_SOURCE=1 will be used. Similarly,
-fhardened -fstack-protector
will not enable -fstack-protector-strong.
Currently, -fhardened is only supported on GNU/Linux.
In DW_AT_producer it is reflected only as -fhardened; it doesn't expand
to anything. This patch provides -Whardened, enabled by default, which
warns when -fhardened couldn't enable a particular option. I think most
often it will say that _FORTIFY_SOURCE wasn't enabled because optimization
were not enabled.
gcc/c-family/ChangeLog:
* c-opts.cc: Include "target.h".

In r10-3781-gd26082357676a3 GCC's pretty-print framework gained
the ability to emit embedding URLs via escape sequences
for marking up text output..
In r10-3783-gb4c7ca2ef3915a GCC started using this for the
[-Wname-of-option] emitted at the end of each diagnostic so that it
becomes a hyperlink to the documentation for that option on the GCC
website.
This makes it much more convenient for the user to locate pertinent
documentation when a diagnostic is emitted.
The above involved special-casing in one specific place, but there is
plenty of quoted text throughout GCC's diagnostic messages that could
usefully have a documentation URL: references to options, pragmas, etc
This patch adds a new optional "urlifier" parameter to pp_format.
The idea is that a urlifier object has responsibility for mapping from
quoted strings in diagnostic messages to URLs, and pp_format has the
ability to automatically add URL escapes for strings that the urlifier
gives it URLs for.
For example, given the format string:
"%<#pragma pack%> has no effect with %<-fpack-struct%>"
with this patch GCC is able to automatically linkify the "#pragma pack"
text to
https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Structure-Layout-Pragmas.html
and the "-fpack-struct" text to:
https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Code-Gen-Options.html#index-fpack-struct
and we don't have to modify the format string itself.
This is only done for the pp_format within
diagnostic_context::report_diagnostic i.e. just for the primary message
in each diagnostics, and not for other places within GCC that use pp
format internally.
"urlifier" is an abstract base class, with a GCC-specific subclass
implementing the logic for generating URLs into GCC's HTML
documentation via binary search in a data table. This patch implements
the gcc_urlifier with a small table generated by hand; the data table in
this patch only covers various pragmas and the option referenced by the
above pragma message.
I have a followup patch that scripts the creation of this data by
directly scraping the output of "make html", thus automating all this,
and (I hope) minimizing the work of ensuring that documentation URLs
emitted by GCC match the generated documentation.

This patch:
- converts "struct diagnostic_context" to "class diagnostic_context".
- ensures all data members have an "m_" prefix, except for "printer",
which has so many uses that renaming would be painful.

This provides a spec to insert "-rpath DDD" for each DDD corresponding
to a compiler startfile directory. This allows a target to use @rpath
as the install path for libraries, and have the compiler provide the
necessary rpath to handle this.
Embed real paths, not relative ones.
We embed a runpath for every path in which libraries might be found. This
change ensures that we embed the actual real path and not a relative one from
the compiler's version-specific directory.
e.g.
/opt/distro/gcc-11-3Dr0/lib
instead of:
/opt/distro/gcc-11-3Dr0/lib/gcc/x86_64-apple-darwin19/11.3.0/../../..
This ensures that if we install, for example, 11.4.0 (and delete the 11.3.0
installation) exes built by 11.3 would continue to function (providing, of course
that 11.4 does not bump any SO names).
gcc/ChangeLog:
* gcc.cc (RUNPATH_OPTION): New.
(do_spec_1): Provide '%P' as a spec to insert rpaths for
each compiler startfile path.

This patch implements support for [P1689R5][] to communicate to a build
system the C++20 module dependencies to build systems so that they may
build `.gcm` files in the proper order.
Support is communicated through the following three new flags:
- `-fdeps-format=` specifies the format for the output. Currently named
`p1689r5`.
- `-fdeps-file=` specifies the path to the file to write the format to.
- `-fdeps-target=` specifies the `.o` that will be written for the TU
that is scanned. This is required so that the build system can
correlate the dependency output with the actual compilation that will
occur.
CMake supports this format as of 17 Jun 2022 (to be part of 3.25.0)
using an experimental feature selection (to allow for future usage
evolution without committing to how it works today). While it remains
experimental, docs may be found in CMake's documentation for
experimental features.
Future work may include using this format for Fortran module
dependencies as well, however this is still pending work.

TODO:
- header-unit information fields
Header units (including the standard library headers) are 100%
unsupported right now because the `-E` mechanism wants to import their
BMIs. A new mode (i.e., something more workable than existing `-E`
behavior) that mocks up header units as if they were imported purely
from their path and content would be required.
- non-utf8 paths
The current standard says that paths that are not unambiguously
represented using UTF-8 are not supported (because these cases are rare
and the extra complication is not worth it at this time). Future
versions of the format might have ways of encoding non-UTF-8 paths. For
now, this patch just doesn't support non-UTF-8 paths (ignoring the
"unambiguously representable in UTF-8" case).
- figure out why junk gets placed at the end of the file
Sometimes it seems like the file gets a lot of `NUL` bytes appended to
it. It happens rarely and seems to be the result of some
`ftruncate`-style call which results in extra padding in the contents.
Noting it here as an observation at least.

When passing `-o` flags to other options, the typical `-o foo` spelling
leaves a leading whitespace when replacing elsewhere. This ends up
creating flags spelled as `-some-option-with-arg= foo.ext` which doesn't
parse properly. When attempting to make a spec function to just remove
the leading whitespace, the argument splitting ends up masking the
whitespace. However, the intended extension *also* ends up being its own
argument. To perform the desired behavior, the arguments need to be
concatenated together.

Existing text output in GCC has to be implemented by writing
sequentially to a pretty_printer instance. This makes it
hard to implement some kinds of diagnostic output (see e.g.
diagnostic-show-locus.cc).
This patch adds more flexible ways of creating text output:
- a canvas class, which can be "painted" to via random-access (rather
that sequentially)
- a table class for 2D grid layout, supporting items that span
multiple rows/columns
- a widget class for organizing diagrams hierarchically.
The patch also expands GCC's diagnostics subsystem so that diagnostics
can have "text art" diagrams - think ASCII art, but potentially
including some Unicode characters, such as box-drawing chars.
The new code is in a new "gcc/text-art" subdirectory and "text_art"
namespace.
The patch adds a new "-fdiagnostics-text-art-charset=VAL" option, with
values:
- "none": don't emit diagrams (added to -fdiagnostics-plain-output)
- "ascii": use pure ASCII in diagrams
- "unicode": allow for conservative use of unicode drawing characters
(such as box-drawing characters).
- "emoji" (the default): as "unicode", but potentially allow for
conservative use of emoji in the output (such as U+26A0 WARNING SIGN).
I made it possible to disable emoji separately from unicode as I believe
there's a generation gap in acceptance of these characters (some older
programmers have a visceral reaction against them, whereas younger
programmers may have no problem with them).
Diagrams are emitted to stderr by default. With SARIF output they are
captured as a location in "relatedLocations", with the diagram as a
code block in Markdown within a "markdown" property of a message.
This patch doesn't add any such diagram usage to GCC, saving that for
followups, apart from adding a plugin to the test suite to exercise the
functionality.

I happened to be digging into the specs to understand a build
failure and spotted mflib and mfwrap. Those were used by the
mudflap system which we ripped out years ago and we just missed

I verified x86 still bootstraps after removing these bits.
Pushed to the trunk as obvious,

So the problem here is that in the spec files, we were not marking the pch
output file to be removed on error.
The way to fix this is to mark the --output-pch argument as the output
file argument.
For the C++ specs file, we had to move around where the %V was located
such that it would be after the %w marker as %V marker clears the outputfiles.
OK? Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu.

Modula-2 uses the C preprocessor to implement handling for conditional
code and macros. However, this is not done directly, because the process
is applied recursively to imported definitions and modules.
The cc1gm2 executable records the parameters as a template command line
needed to create a composite 'cc1 -E' for each file to be preprocessed
starting with the main file from the original command line.
This patch fixes the capture of the C preprocessor template to include
the target information needed for correct multilib operation.
In order to match the existing semantics of '-E, -M and -MM' these have
to be handled as a 'pre-processor only' job (i.e. the recursion is omitted
and only the main file is processed).
Whereas C-family front ends always pre-process, Modula-2 only does so
when specifically requested (via the -fcpp option).
'-MD, -MMD and -MQ' also require special handling, since (in principle)
these options can be applied to any command line (with -fcpp) providing
dependency information as a by-product.
TODO: the preprocessor is not able to determine def and mod dependencies
for Modula-2 and so the output of this only shows the object to module
dep. We should be able to append the .def and .mod dependencies.
The patch amends save-temps handling to cater for the preprocessor
recursion and to avoid writing saved files into the source directories.
The patch changes the extension for Modula-2 preprocessed source to .m2i
to avoid clashes with .i.
The main driver code is amended to add default handlers for .mod and .m2i
so that a useful error message will be emitted if the Modula-2 compiler
is not built-in.
The compiler will now also handle code generation from a .m2i preprocessed
source.
TODO: We should not need to pass the '-c' option to the compiler to alter
the processing of init code.

Under the old logic for validate_switches, once suffix or starred got set,
they stayed set for all later switches found in the spec. So for e.g.
%{g*:%{%:debug-level-gt(0):
Once we see g*, starred is set. Then we see %:, and it sees that as a
zero-length switch, which because starred is still set, matches any and all
command-line options. So targets that use such a spec accept all options in
the driver, while ones that don't reject some, such as the recent
-nostdlib++.
This patch fixes the inconsistency, so all targets would complain about
-nostdlib++, and then sets SKIPOPT for it so they don't.

-ffile-prefix-map is supposed to be a superset of -fmacro-prefix-map
and -fdebug-prefix-map. However, when building .S or .s files, gas is
not called with the appropriate --debug-prefix-map option when
-ffile-prefix-map is used.
While the user can specify -fdebug-prefix-map when building assembly
files via gcc, it's more ergonomic to also support -ffile-prefix-map;
especially since for .S files that could contain the __FILE__ macro,
one would then also have to specify -fmacro-prefix-map.

My recent change to enable _Float{16,32,64,128,32x,64x,128x} for C++
apparently broke bootstrap on some Debian/Ubuntu setups.
Those multiarch targets put some headers into
/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu/bits/ etc. subdirectory instead of
/usr/include/bits/.
This is handled by
/* /usr/include comes dead last. */
{ NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR, NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_COMPONENT, 0, 0, 1, 2 },
{ NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR, NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_COMPONENT, 0, 0, 1, 0 },
in cppdefault.cc, where the 2 in the last element of the first initializer
means the entry is ignored on non-multiarch and suffixed by the multiarch
dir otherwise, so installed gcc has search path like:
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst/usr/local/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/13.0.0/include
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst/usr/local/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/13.0.0/include-fixed
/usr/local/include
/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu
/usr/include
(when installed with DESTDIR=/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst).
Now, when fixincludes is run, it is processing the whole /usr/include dir
and all its subdirectories, so floatn{,-common.h} actually go into
.../include-fixed/x86_64-linux-gnu/bits/floatn{,-common.h}
because that is where they appear in /usr/include too.
In some setups, /usr/include also contains /usr/include/bits -> x86_64-linux-gnu/bits
symlink and after the r13-2896 tweak it works.
In other setups there is no /usr/include/bits symlink and when one
#include <bits/floatn.h>
given the above search path, it doesn't find the fixincluded header,
as
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst/usr/local/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/13.0.0/include-fixed/bits/floatn.h
doesn't exist and
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst/usr/local/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/13.0.0/include-fixed/x86_64-linux-gnu/bits/floatn.h
isn't searched and so
/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu/bits/floatn.h
wins and we fail because of typedef whatever _Float128; and similar.
The following patch ought to fix this. The first hunk by arranging that
the installed search path actually looks like:
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst/usr/local/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/13.0.0/include
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst/usr/local/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/13.0.0/include-fixed/x86_64-linux-gnu
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01inst/usr/local/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/13.0.0/include-fixed
/usr/local/include
/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu
/usr/include
and thus for include-fixed it treats it the same as /usr/include.
The second FIXED_INCLUDE_DIR entry there is:
{ FIXED_INCLUDE_DIR, "GCC", 0, 0, 0,
/* A multilib suffix needs adding if different multilibs use
different headers. */
#ifdef SYSROOT_HEADERS_SUFFIX_SPEC
1
#else
0
#endif
},
where SYSROOT_HEADERS_SUFFIX_SPEC is defined only on vxworks or mips*-mti-linux
and arranges for multilib path to be appended there. Neither of those
systems is multiarch.
This isn't enough, because when using the -B option, the driver adds
-isystem .../include-fixed in another place, so the second hunk modifies
that spot the same.
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01/gcc/xgcc -B /home/jakub/gcc/obj01/gcc/
then has search path:
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01/gcc/include
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01/gcc/include-fixed/x86_64-linux-gnu
/home/jakub/gcc/obj01/gcc/include-fixed
/usr/local/include
/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu
/usr/include
which again is what I think we want to achieve.

Create a new hook to let target could override the multi-lib result,
the motivation is RISC-V might have very complicated multi-lib re-use
rule*, which is hard to maintain and use current multi-lib scripts,
we even hit the "argument list too long" error when we tried to add more
multi-lib reuse rule.
So I think it would be great to have a target specific way to determine
the multi-lib re-use rule, then we could write those rule in C, instead
of expand every possible case in MULTILIB_REUSE.

The following patch is a revival of the
https://gcc.gnu.org/legacy-ml/gcc-patches/2014-10/msg00771.html
patch. While trunk configured against recent glibc and with linker
--as-needed support doesn't really need to link against -lquadmath
anymore, there are still other targets where libquadmath is still in
use.
As has been discussed, making -static-libgfortran imply statically
linking both libgfortran and libquadmath is undesirable because of
the significant licensing differences between the 2 libraries.
Compared to the 2014 patch, this one doesn't handle -lquadmath
addition in the driver, which to me looks incorrect, libgfortran
configure determines where in libgfortran.spec -lquadmath should

The bug appeared afte r13-2010-g1270ccda70ca09 "Factor out
jobserver_active_p" slightly changed `putenv()` use from allocating
to non-allocating:
-xputenv (concat ("MAKEFLAGS=", dup, NULL));
+xputenv (jinfo.skipped_makeflags.c_str ());
`xputenv()` (and `putenv()`) don't copy strings and only store the
pointer in the `environ` global table. As a result `environ` got
corrupted as soon as `jinfo.skipped_makeflags` store got deallocated.
This started causing bootstrap crashes in `execv()` calls:
xgcc: fatal error: cannot execute '/build/build/./prev-gcc/collect2': execv: Bad address
The change restores memory allocation for `xputenv()` argument.

Thanks, that is roughly what I'd implement anyway and apparently they have
it already since 2015, we've added the -fsanitize-undefined-trap-on-error
support back in 2014 and didn't change it since then.
As a small divergence from clang, I chose -fsanitize-undefined-trap-on-error
to be a (deprecated) alias for -fsanitize-trap aka -fsanitize-trap=all
rather thn -fsanitize-trap=undefined which seems to be what clang does,
because for a deprecated option it is IMHO more important backwards
compatibility with what gcc did over the past 8 years rather than clang
compatibility.
Some sanitizers (e.g. asan, lsan, tsan) don't support traps,
-fsanitize-trap=address etc. will be rejected (if enabled at the end of
command line), -fno-sanitize-trap= can be specified even for them.
This is similar behavior to -fsanitize-recover=.
One complication is vptr sanitization, which can't easily trap,
as the whole slow path of the checking is inside of libubsan.
Previously, -fsanitize=vptr -fsanitize-undefined-trap-on-error
silently ignored vptr sanitization.
This patch similarly to what clang does will accept
-fsanitize-trap=all or -fsanitize-trap=undefined which enable
the vptr bit as trapping and again that causes silent disabling
of vptr sanitization, while -fsanitize-trap=vptr is rejected
(already during option processing).
