The assign_params change unfortunately breaks e.g. the following testcase.
The problem is that some passes (e.g. subreg lowering but assign_parms
comments also talk about delayed slot scheduling) rely on crtl->return_rtx
not to contain pseudo registers, and the assign_parms change results
in the pseudo in there not being replaced with a hard register.
The following patch instead clears the crtl->return_rtx if a function
returns TYPE_EMPTY_P structure, that way (use (pseudo)) is not emitted
into the IL and it is treated like more like functions returning void.
I've also changed the effective target on the empty-class1.C testcase, so
that it doesn't fail on x86_64-linux with -m32 testing.

The x86_64 psABI says that an empty class isn't passed or returned in memory
or registers, so we shouldn't set %eax in this function.
The df-scan hunk catches the case where we look at a 0-length reg and build
a range the length of unsigned int, which happened before I changed
assign_parms to match expand_function_end.

This patch provides a generic API for accessing global ranges. It is
meant to replace get_range_info() and get_ptr_nonnull() with one
common interface. It uses the same API as the ranger (class
range_query), so there will now be one API for accessing local and
global ranges alike.
Follow-up patches will convert all users of get_range_info and
get_ptr_nonnull to this API.
For get_range_info, instead of:
if (!POINTER_TYPE_P (TREE_TYPE (name)) && SSA_NAME_RANGE_INFO (name))
get_range_info (name, vr);
You can now do:
get_range_query (cfun)->range_of_expr (vr, name, [stmt]);
...as well as any other of the range_query methods (range_on_edge,
range_of_stmt, value_of_expr, value_on_edge, value_on_stmt, etc).
As per the API, range_of_expr will work on constants, SSA names, and
anything we support in irange::supports_type_p().
For pointers, the interface is the same, so instead of:
else if (POINTER_TYPE_P (TREE_TYPE (name)) && SSA_NAME_PTR_INFO (name))
{
if (get_ptr_nonnull (name))
stuff();
}
One can do:
get_range_query (cfun)->range_of_expr (vr, name, [stmt]);
if (vr.nonzero_p ())
stuff ();
Along with this interface, we are providing a mechanism by which a
pass can use an on-demand ranger transparently, without having to
change its code. Of course, this assumes all get_range_info() and
get_ptr_nonnull() users have been converted to the new API, which
follow-up patches will do.
If a pass would prefer to use an on-demand ranger with finer grained
and context aware ranges, all it would have to do is call
enable_ranger() at the beginning of the pass, and disable_ranger() at
the end of the pass.
Note, that to use context aware ranges, any user of range_of_expr()
would need to pass additional context. For example, the optional
gimple statement (or perhaps use range_on_edge or range_of_stmt).
The observant reader will note that get_range_query is tied to a
struct function, which may not be available in certain contexts, such
as at RTL time, gimple-fold, or some other places where we may or may
not have cfun set.
For cases where we are sure there is no function, you can use
get_global_range_query() instead of get_range_query(fun). The API is
the same.
For cases where a function may be called with or without a function,
you could use the following idiom:
range_query *query = cfun ? get_range_query (cfun)
: get_global_range_query ();
query->range_of_expr (range, expr, [stmt]);
The default range query obtained by get_range_query() is the global
range query, unless the user has enabled an on-demand ranger with
enable_ranger(), in which case it will use the currently active ranger.
That is, until disable_ranger() is called, at which point, we revert
back to global ranges.
We think this provides a generic way of accessing ranges, both
globally and locally, without having to keep track of types,
SSA_NAME_RANGE_INFO, and SSA_NAME_PTR_INFO. We also hope this can be
used to transition passes from global to on-demand ranges when
appropriate.

Last year I've added cgraph_node::get_create calls for the dummy
functions used for -fdump-passes, so that it interacts well with pass
disabling/enabling which is cgraph uid based.
Unfortunately, as the following testcase shows, when assembler hash
is present, that wants to compute DECL_ASSEMBLER_NAME and the C++ FE
is unprepared to handle it on the dummy functions which don't have
DECL_NAME etc.
The following patch fixes it by setting up a dummy DECL_ASSEMBLER_NAME
on these, so that the FEs don't need to compute it.

[PR98603]
If an asm insn fails constraint checking during vregs, it is just deleted.
We don't delete asm goto though because of the edges to the labels, so
instantiate_virtual_regs_in_insn would just remove the inputs and their
constraints, the pattern etc.
This worked fine when asm goto couldn't have output operands, but causes
ICEs later on when it has more than one output (and furthermore doesn't
really remove the problematic outputs). The problem is that
for multiple outputs we have a PARALLEL with multiple ASM_OPERANDS, but
those must use the same ASM_OPERANDS_INPUT_VEC etc., but the code was
adjusting just one.
The following patch turns invalid asm goto into a bare
asm goto ("" : : : : lab, lab2, lab3);
i.e. no inputs/outputs/clobbers, just the labels.

So, I've tried under debugger how it behaves and seems global_options_set
is really an or of whether an option has been ever seen as explicit, either
on the command line or in any of the option pragmas or optimize/target
attributes seen so far, so it isn't something that can be relied on.
The following patch implements the saving/restoring of the opts_set bits
(though only for the options/variables saved by the generic options-save.c
code, for the target specific stuff that isn't handled by the generic code
the opts_set argument is now passed to the hook and the backends can choose
e.g. to use a TargetSave variable to save the flags either individually or
together in some bitmask (or ignore it if they never need opts_set for the
options).
This patch itself doesn't fix the testcase failing on arm, but a follow up
patch will.

This extends DECL_GIMPLE_REG_P to all types so we can clear
TREE_ADDRESSABLE even for integers with partial defs, not just
complex and vector variables. To make that transition easier
the patch inverts DECL_GIMPLE_REG_P to DECL_NOT_GIMPLE_REG_P
since that makes the default the current state for all other
types besides complex and vectors.
For the testcase in PR94703 we're able to expand the partial
def'ed local integer to a register then, producing a single
movl rather than going through the stack.
On i?86 this execute FAILs gcc.dg/torture/pr71522.c because
we now expand a round-trip through a long double automatic var
to a register fld/fst which normalizes the value. For that
during RTL expansion we're looking for problematic punnings
of decls and avoid pseudos for those - I chose integer or
BLKmode accesses on decls with modes where precision doesn't
match bitsize which covers the XFmode case.

The information in cgraph callees is released long before we get to

This was first submitted many years ago
https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2010-10/msg02468.html
The command line option -fcallgraph-info is added and makes the
compiler generate another output file (xxx.ci) for each compilation
unit (or LTO partitoin), which is a valid VCG file (you can launch
your favorite VCG viewer on it unmodified) and contains the "final"
callgraph of the unit. "final" is a bit of a misnomer as this is
actually the callgraph at RTL expansion time, but since most
high-level optimizations are done at the Tree level and RTL doesn't
usually fiddle with calls, it's final in almost all cases. Moreover,
the nodes can be decorated with additional info: -fcallgraph-info=su
adds stack usage info and -fcallgraph-info=da dynamic allocation info.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the way aggregate_value_p
handles call-preserved registers, it's a de facto part of the ABI,
so we shouldn't change it. The patch simply extends the current

This patch adds new structures and functions for handling
multiple ABIs in a translation unit. The structures are:
- predefined_function_abi: describes a static, predefined ABI
- function_abi: describes either a predefined ABI or a local
variant of one (e.g. taking -fipa-ra into account)
The patch adds functions for getting the ABI from a given type
or decl; a later patch will also add a function for getting the
ABI of the target of a call insn.
Although ABIs are about much more than call-clobber/saved choices,
I wanted to keep the name general in case we add more ABI-related
information in future.

Similarly to the call_used_or_fixed_regs patch, this one replaces
tests of call_used_regs[i] with call_used_or_fixed_reg_p (i).
The only remaining direct uses of call_used_regs are in reginfo.c
and in the conditional register usage hooks.
Again, this is purely mechanical. A later patch will clear up the
oddities in config/ code.

I have a series of patches that (as a side effect) makes all rtl
passes use the information collected by -fipa-ra. This showed up a
latent bug in the liveness tracking in regrename.c, which doesn't take
CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE into account when processing clobbers.
This actually seems to be quite a common problem with passes that use
note_stores; only a handful remember to walk CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE
too. I think it was just luck that I saw it with regrename first.
This patch tries to make things more robust by passing an insn rather
than a pattern to note_stores. The old function is still available
as note_pattern_stores for the few places that need it.
When updating callers, I've erred on the side of using note_stores
rather than note_pattern_stores, because IMO note_stores should be
the default choice and we should only use note_pattern_stores if
there's a specific reason. Specifically:
* For cselib.c, "body" may be a COND_EXEC_CODE instead of the main
insn pattern.
* For ira.c, I wasn't sure whether extending no_equiv to
CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE really made sense, since we don't do that
for normal call-clobbered registers. Same for mark_not_eliminable
in reload1.c
* Some other places only have a pattern available, and since those
places wouldn't benefit from walking CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE,
it seemed better to alter the code as little as possible.
* In the config/ changes, quite a few callers have already weeded
out CALL insns. It still seemed better to use note_stores rather
than prematurely optimise. (note_stores should tail call to
note_pattern_stores once it sees that the insn isn't a call.)
The patch also documents what SETs mean in CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE.

This patch adds a flag that tells targets whether an argument
has been converted to pass-by-reference form. This replaces
assign_parm_data_one::passed_pointer in function.c.
The flag is set automatically for places that call
apply_pass_by_reference_rules. Places that apply
pass-by-reference manually need to set it themselves.
(After previous changes, no targets apply pass-by-reference
manually. They all go through apply_pass_by_reference_rules.)

This patch adds a function_arg_info field to assign_parm_data_one,
so that:
- passed_type -> arg.type
- promoted_mode -> arg.mode
- named_arg -> arg.named
We can then pass this function_arg_info directly to the converted
hooks.
Between the initialisation of the assign_parm_data_one and the
application of promotion rules (which is a state internal to
assign_parm_find_data_types), arg.mode is equivalent to passed_mode
(i.e. to TYPE_MODE).

This patch adds a helper routine that applies pass-by-reference
semantics to an existing function_arg_info.
The c6x part means that c6x_function_arg and c6x_function_arg_advance
see the same "named" value as pass_by_reference did, rather than
pass_by_reference seeing "true" and the others seeing "false".
This doesn't matter because the c6x port doesn't care about namedness.
The rs6000.c patch removes an assignment to "type", but the only
later code to use it was the patched promote_mode line.
(The reason for patching these places despite the above is that
often target code gets used as a basis for new targets or changes
to existing ones.)

The hook is passed the promoted mode instead of the original type mode.
The expr.h reference in the documentation is no longer correct, but
pointing to calls.h or calls.c doesn't help much either. I just left
this as-is since it's not related to the point of the series.
After previous changes, most places already pass arg.mode and arg.type.
Only i386 and mcore needed to construct a new one out of nothing.
rs6000 needs to construct one slightly earlier than before.

There seems to be a bit of confusion around this one. Almost all
callers pass the same arguments as TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG, meaning
that the mode is the promoted mode rather than the type mode.
But the calls.c handling for normal typed arguments instead passes
the unpromoted TYPE_MODE (despite passing the promoted mode to
TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG). I've kept this behaviour with a ??? comment.
(The calls.c handling of libgcc functions does pass the promoted
mode though, as does the function.c handling of incoming arguments.)
Also, a couple of the arm callers don't seem to be using the hook
correctly. Again I kept the current choices and added a ??? comment.

TARGET_FUNCTION_INCOMING_ARG take a function_arg_info.
They have to be done together since many targets use the
same function for both.

This patch adds the function_arg_info class and uses it for
TARGET_ARG_PARTIAL_BYTES.
The hook is passed the promoted mode instead of the original type mode.
The arguments aren't mentioned in the documentation, which is why the
target.def change is so small.
The patch changes "true" to "arg.named" in:
gcc_assert (!epiphany_pass_by_reference (cum, mode, type, /* named */ true));
but epiphany_pass_by_reference doesn't care about the named flag.
