If a finalization is not required we created a namespace containing formal arguments for an internal interface definition but never used any of these. So the whole sub_ns namespace was not wired up to the program and consequently was never freed. The fix is to simply not generate any finalization wrappers if we know that it will be unused. gfortran uses internally a different array descriptor ("gfc") as Fortran 2018 alias TS291113 defines for C interoperability via ISO_Fortran_binding.h ("CFI"). Hence, when calling a C function from Fortran, it has to be converted in the callee - and if a BIND(C) procedure is written in Fortran, the CFI argument has to be converted to gfc in order work with the rest of the FE code and the library calls. Before this patch, part was handled in the FE generated code and other parts in libgfortran. With this patch, all code is generated and CFI is defined as proper type - visible in the debugger and to the middle end - avoiding both alias issues and missed optimization issues. This patch also fixes issues like: intent(out) deallocation in the bind(C) callee, using the CFI descriptor also for allocatable and pointer scalars and for len=* character strings. For 'select rank', it also optimizes the code + avoid accessing uninitialized memory if the dummy argument is allocatable/a pointer. This one took a bit of detective work. When array pointers point to components of derived types, we currently set the span field and then create an array temporary when we pass the array pointer to a procedure as a non-pointer or non-target argument. (This is inefficient, but that's for another release). Now, the compiler detected this case when there was a direct assignment like p => a%b, but not when p was returned either as a function result or via an argument. This patch builds on the original patch by Steve Kargl that fixed the ICE and produced an "Unclassifiable statement at (1)" error. The processing of parameter variables now correctly handles zero length arrays used with %kind and %len. A side affect is that "Unclassifiable" error now says "Assignment to constant expression at (1)". It also fixes PR93365. gcc/fortran/ChangeLog: PR fortran/93600 * expr.c (simplify_parameter_variable): Check whether the ref chain contains INQUIRY_LEN or INQUIRY_KIND and set inquiry boolean. When an empty array has been identified and a new new EXPR_ARRAY expression has been created only return that expression if inquiry is not set. Allows character literals to used to assign values to non-character variables in the same way that Hollerith constants are used. In addition character literals can be used in data statements just like Hollerith constants. Warnings of such use are output to discourage this usage as it is a non-standard legacy feature and must be explicitly enabled. Enabled by -fdec and -fdec-char-conversions.
