2023-11-29Introduce -finline-stringopsAlexandre Oliva1-3/+6
try_store_by_multiple_pieces was added not long ago, enabling variable-sized memset to be expanded inline when the worst-case in-range constant length would, using conditional blocks with powers of two to cover all possibilities of length and alignment. This patch introduces -finline-stringops[=fn] to request expansions to start with a loop, so as to still take advantage of known alignment even with long lengths, but without necessarily adding store blocks for every power of two. This makes it possible for the supported stringops (memset, memcpy, memmove, memset) to be expanded, even if storing a single byte per iteration. Surely efficient implementations can run faster, with a pre-loop to increase alignment, but that would likely be excessive for inline expansions. Still, in some cases, such as in freestanding environments, users prefer to inline such stringops, especially those that the compiler may introduce itself, even if the expansion is not as performant as a highly optimized C library implementation could be, to avoid depending on a C runtime library. for gcc/ChangeLog * expr.cc (emit_block_move_hints): Take ctz of len. 2023-09-29Remove poly_int_podRichard Sandiford1-2/+2
poly_int was written before the switch to C++11 and so couldn't use explicit default constructors. This led to an awkward split between poly_int_pod and poly_int. poly_int simply inherited from poly_int_pod and added constructors, with the argumentless constructor having an empty body. But inheritance meant that poly_int had to repeat the assignment operators from poly_int_pod (again, no C++11, so no "using" to inherit base-class implementations). All that goes away if we switch to using default constructors. The main complication is ensuring that braced initialisation still gives a constexpr, so that static variables can be initialised without runtime code. The two problems here are: (1) When initialising a poly_int<N, wide_int> with fewer than N coefficients, the other coefficients need to be a zero of the same precision as the explicit coefficients. This was previously done in a for loop using wi::ints_for<...>::zero, but C++11 constexpr constructors can't have function bodies. The patch instead uses a series of delegated initialisers to fill in the implicit coefficients. (2) The initialisation in: void f(int x) { unsigned int foo {x}; } produces the warning: warning: narrowing conversion of 'x' from 'int' to 'unsigned int' [-Wnarrowing] whereas: void f(int x) { unsigned int foo = x; } does not. So switching to direct initialisation of the coeffs array would mean that: poly_uin64_t x = 0; would trigger a warning for using 0 rather than 0u. That seemed overly pedantic, so the patch adds explicit casts to the constructor. The complication is to do that without adding extra code to wide-int versions. The patch uses a new init_cast type for that. gcc/ * poly-int.h (poly_int_pod): Delete. (poly_coeff_traits::init_cast): New type. (poly_int_full, poly_int_hungry, poly_int_fullness): New structures. 2023-02-16don't declare header-defined functions both static and inlinePatrick Palka1-7/+7
Many functions defined in our headers are declared 'static inline' which is a C idiom whose use predates our move to C++ as the implementation language. But in C++ the inline keyword is more than just a compiler hint, and is sufficient to give the function the intended semantics. In fact declaring a function both static and inline is a pessimization since static effectively disables the desired definition merging behavior enabled by inline, and is also a source of (harmless) ODR violations when a static inline function gets called from a non-static inline one (such as tree_operand_check calling tree_operand_length). This patch mechanically fixes the vast majority of occurrences of this anti-pattern throughout the compiler's headers via the command line sed -i 's/^static inline/inline/g' gcc/*.h gcc/*/*.h There's also a manual change to remove the redundant declarations of is_ivar and lookup_category in gcc/objc/objc-act.cc which would otherwise conflict with their modified definitions in objc-act.h (due to the difference in staticness). Besides fixing some ODR violations, this speeds up stage1 cc1plus by about 2% and reduces the size of its text segment by 1.5MB. gcc/ChangeLog: * addresses.h: Mechanically drop 'static' from 'static inline' functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. * asan.h: Likewise. * attribs.h: Likewise. * basic-block.h: Likewise. * bitmap.h: Likewise. * cfghooks.h: Likewise. * cfgloop.h: Likewise. * cgraph.h: Likewise. * cselib.h: Likewise. * data-streamer.h: Likewise. * debug.h: Likewise. * df.h: Likewise. * diagnostic.h: Likewise. * dominance.h: Likewise. * dumpfile.h: Likewise. * emit-rtl.h: Likewise. * except.h: Likewise. * expmed.h: Likewise. * expr.h: Likewise. * fixed-value.h: Likewise. * gengtype.h: Likewise. * gimple-expr.h: Likewise. * gimple-iterator.h: Likewise. * gimple-predict.h: Likewise. * gimple-range-fold.h: Likewise. * gimple-ssa.h: Likewise. * gimple.h: Likewise. * graphite.h: Likewise. * hard-reg-set.h: Likewise. * hash-map.h: Likewise. * hash-set.h: Likewise. * hash-table.h: Likewise. * hwint.h: Likewise. * input.h: Likewise. * insn-addr.h: Likewise. * internal-fn.h: Likewise. * ipa-fnsummary.h: Likewise. * ipa-icf-gimple.h: Likewise. * ipa-inline.h: Likewise. * ipa-modref.h: Likewise. * ipa-prop.h: Likewise. * ira-int.h: Likewise. * ira.h: Likewise. * lra-int.h: Likewise. * lra.h: Likewise. * lto-streamer.h: Likewise. * memmodel.h: Likewise. * omp-general.h: Likewise. * optabs-query.h: Likewise. * optabs.h: Likewise. * plugin.h: Likewise. * pretty-print.h: Likewise. * range.h: Likewise. * read-md.h: Likewise. * recog.h: Likewise. * regs.h: Likewise. * rtl-iter.h: Likewise. * rtl.h: Likewise. * sbitmap.h: Likewise. * sched-int.h: Likewise. * sel-sched-ir.h: Likewise. * sese.h: Likewise. * sparseset.h: Likewise. * ssa-iterators.h: Likewise. * system.h: Likewise. * target-globals.h: Likewise. * target.h: Likewise. * timevar.h: Likewise. * tree-chrec.h: Likewise. * tree-data-ref.h: Likewise. * tree-iterator.h: Likewise. * tree-outof-ssa.h: Likewise. * tree-phinodes.h: Likewise. * tree-scalar-evolution.h: Likewise. * tree-sra.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-alias.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-live.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-loop-manip.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-loop.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-operands.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-propagate.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-sccvn.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa.h: Likewise. * tree-ssanames.h: Likewise. * tree-streamer.h: Likewise. * tree-switch-conversion.h: Likewise. * tree-vectorizer.h: Likewise. * tree.h: Likewise. * wide-int.h: Likewise. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-common.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/c/ChangeLog: * c-parser.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * cp-tree.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/fortran/ChangeLog: * gfortran.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. gcc/jit/ChangeLog: * jit-dejagnu.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. * jit-recording.h: Likewise. gcc/objc/ChangeLog: * objc-act.h: Mechanically drop static from static inline functions via s/^static inline/inline/g. * objc-map.h: Likewise. * objc-act.cc: Remove the redundant redeclarations of is_ivar and lookup_category.

2022-07-08middle-end: Use subregs to expand COMPLEX_EXPR to set the lowpart.Tamar Christina1-1/+1
When lowering COMPLEX_EXPR we currently emit two VEC_EXTRACTs. One for the lowpart and one for the highpart. The problem with this is that in RTL the lvalue of the RTX is the only thing tying the two instructions together. This means that e.g. combine is unable to try to combine the two instructions for setting the lowpart and highpart. For ISAs that have bit extract instructions we can eliminate one of the extracts if, and only if we're setting the entire complex number. This change changes the expand code when we're setting the entire complex number to generate a subreg for the lowpart instead of a vec_extract. This allows us to optimize sequences such as: _Complex int f(int a, int b) { _Complex int t = a + b * 1i; return t; } from: f: bfi x2, x0, 0, 32 bfi x2, x1, 32, 32 mov x0, x2 ret into: f: bfi x0, x1, 32, 32 ret I have also confirmed the codegen for x86_64 did not change. gcc/ChangeLog: * expmed.cc (store_bit_field_1): Add parameter that indicates if value is still undefined and if so emit a subreg move instead. 2022-07-04middle-end: Support ABIs that pass FP values as wider integers.Roger Sayle1-1/+10
Sorry for the long delay getting back to this, but after deeper investigation, it turns out that Jeff Law's tingling spider senses that the original patch wasn't updating everywhere that was required were spot on. Although my nvptx testing showed no problems with -O2, compiling the same tests with -O0 found several additional assertion ICEs (exactly where he'd predicted they'd be). Here's a revised patch that updates five locations (up from the previous two). Finding any remaining locations (if any) might be easier once folks are able to test things on their targets. This also implements Jeff's suggestion to factor the common code into helper routines. 2022-07-04 Roger Sayle <roger@nextmovesoftware.com> gcc/ChangeLog PR target/104489 * calls.cc (precompute_register_parameters): Allow promotion of floating point values to be passed in wider integer modes by calling new convert_float_to_wider_int. 2022-06-07PR middle-end/105853: Call store_constructor directly from calls.cc.Roger Sayle1-0/+2
This patch fixes both ICE regressions PR middle-end/105853 and PR target/105856 caused by my recent patch to expand small const structs as immediate constants. That patch updated code generation in three places: two in expr.cc that call store_constructor directly, and the third in calls.cc's load_register_parameters that expands its CONSTRUCTOR via expand_expr, as store_constructor is local/static to expr.cc, and the "public" API, should usually simply forward the constructor to the appropriate store_constructor function. Alas, despite the clean regression testing on multiple targets, the above ICEs show that expand_expr isn't a suitable proxy for store_constructor, and things that (I'd assumed) shouldn't affect how/whether a struct is placed in a register [such as whether the struct is considered packed/ aligned or not] actually interfere with the optimization that is being attempted. The (proposed) solution is to export store_constructor (and it's helper function int_expr_size) from expr.cc, by removing their static qualifier and prototyping both functions in expr.h, so they can be called directly from load_register_parameters in calls.cc. This cures both ICEs, but almost as importantly improves code generation over GCC 12. For PR 105853, GCC 12 generates: compose_nd_na_ipv6_src: movzx eax, WORD PTR eth_addr_zero[rip+2] movzx edx, WORD PTR eth_addr_zero[rip] movzx edi, WORD PTR eth_addr_zero[rip+4] sal rax, 16 or rax, rdx sal rdi, 32 or rdi, rax xor eax, eax jmp packet_set_nd eth_addr_zero: .zero 6 where now (with this fix) GCC 13 generates: compose_nd_na_ipv6_src: xorl %edi, %edi xorl %eax, %eax jmp packet_set_nd Likewise, for PR 105856 on ARM, we'd previously generate: g_329_3: movw r3, #:lower16:.LANCHOR0 movt r3, #:upper16:.LANCHOR0 ldr r0, [r3] b func_19 but with this optimization we now generate: g_329_3: mov r0, #6 b func_19 2022-06-07 Roger Sayle <roger@nextmovesoftware.com> gcc/ChangeLog PR middle-end/105853 PR target/105856 * calls.cc (load_register_parameters): Call store_constructor and int_expr_size directly instead of expanding via expand_expr. * expr.cc (static void store_constructor): Don't prototype here. 2021-05-03introduce try store by multiple piecesAlexandre Oliva1-1/+12
The ldist pass turns even very short loops into memset calls. E.g., the TFmode emulation calls end with a loop of up to 3 iterations, to zero out trailing words, and the loop distribution pass turns them into calls of the memset builtin. Though short constant-length clearing memsets are usually dealt with efficiently, for non-constant-length ones, the options are setmemM, or a function calls. RISC-V doesn't have any setmemM pattern, so the loops above end up "optimized" into memset calls, incurring not only the overhead of an explicit call, but also discarding the information the compiler has about the alignment of the destination, and that the length is a multiple of the word alignment. This patch handles variable lengths with multiple conditional power-of-2-constant-sized stores-by-pieces, so as to reduce the overhead of length compares. It also changes the last copy-prop pass into ccp, so that pointer alignment and length's nonzero bits are detected and made available for the expander, even for ldist-introduced SSA_NAMEs. for gcc/ChangeLog * builtins.c (try_store_by_multiple_pieces): New. 2021-04-29Generate offset adjusted operation for op_by_pieces operationsH.J. Lu1-1/+9
Add an overlap_op_by_pieces_p target hook for op_by_pieces operations between two areas of memory to generate one offset adjusted operation in the smallest integer mode for the remaining bytes on the last piece operation of a memory region to avoid doing more than one smaller operations.
