[PR96342]
While `poly_int64' has been the default representation of bitfield size
and offset for some time, there was a lack of support for the use of
non-constant `poly_int64' values for those values throughout the
compiler, limiting the applicability of the BIT_FIELD_REF rtl expression
for variable length vectors, such as those used by SVE.
This patch starts work on extending the functionality of relevant
functions in the expand pass such as to enable their use by the compiler
for such vectors.

For architectures where the vector-length is a compile-time variable,
rather representing a runtime constant, as is the case with SVE it is
perfectly reasonable that such vector be made up of two (or more) subvector
components of a compatible sub-length variable.
One example of this would be the concatenation of two VNx4QI vectors
into a single VNx8QI vector.
This patch adds initial support for the enablement of this feature in
the middle-end, removing the `.is_constant()' constraint on the vector's
number of elements, instead making the constant no. of elements the
multiple of the number of subvectors (which must then also be of
variable length, such that their polynomial ratio then results in a
compile-time constant) required to fill the vector.

So as noted in the BZ, sparc builds of the golang libraries were failing due to
the CRC code.
Ultimately this was another mode problem in the table expansion. Essentially
when the mode of the resultant crc was different than the mode of the input
data we could create mixed mode operations which is a no-no. Not entirely sure
how we were getting away with it before, but it was clearly wrong.
The mode of the crc will always be at least as large at the mode of the data
for the cases we support. So the code has been adjusted to convert the data's
mode to the crc's mode and do all the ops in the crc mode.
That fixes the libgo build problem on sparc and I've verfied that there aren't
any regressions on x86_64 as well as all the embedded targets in my tester.

For a TSVC testcase we see failed register coalescing due to a
different schedule of GIMPLE .FMA and stores fed by it. This
can be mitigated by making direct internal functions participate
in TER - given we're using more and more of such functions to
expose target capabilities it seems to be a natural thing to not
exempt those.
Unfortunately the internal function expanding API doesn't match
what we usually have - passing in a target and returning an RTX
but instead the LHS of the call is expanded and written to. This
makes the TER expansion of a call SSA def a bit unwieldly.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.
The ccmp changes have likely not seen any coverage, the debug stmt
changes might not be optimal, we might end up losing on replaceable
calls.

If the target is ZBC or ZBKC, it uses clmul instruction for the CRC
calculation. Otherwise, if the target is ZBKB, generates table-based
CRC, but for reversing inputs and the output uses bswap and brev8
instructions. Add new tests to check CRC generation for ZBC, ZBKC and
ZBKB targets.

Add two new internal functions (IFN_CRC, IFN_CRC_REV), to provide faster
CRC generation.
One performs bit-forward and the other bit-reversed CRC computation.
If CRC optabs are supported, they are used for the CRC computation.
Otherwise, table-based CRC is generated.
The supported data and CRC sizes are 8, 16, 32, and 64 bits.
The polynomial is without the leading 1.
A table with 256 elements is used to store precomputed CRCs.
For the reflection of inputs and the output, a simple algorithm involving
SHIFT, AND, and OR operations is used.

As discussed earlier, we currently clear padding bits even when we
don't have to and that causes pessimization of emitted code,
e.g. for
union U { int a; long b[64]; };
void bar (union U *);
void
foo (void)

we need to clear just u.a, not the whole union, but on the other side
in cases where the standard requires padding bits to be zeroed, like for
C23 {} initializers of aggregates with padding bits, or for C++11 zero
initialization we don't do that.
This patch
a) moves some of the stuff into complete_ctor_at_level_p (but not
all the *p_complete = 0; case, for that it would need to change
so that it passes around the ctor rather than just its type) and
changes the handling of unions
b) introduces a new option, so that users can either get the new
behavior (only what is guaranteed by the standards, the default),
or previous behavior (union padding zero initialization, no such
guarantees in structures) or also a guarantee in structures
c) introduces a new CONSTRUCTOR flag which says that the padding bits
(if any) should be zero initialized (and sets it for now in the C
FE for C23 {} initializers).
Am not sure the CONSTRUCTOR_ZERO_PADDING_BITS flag is really needed
for C23, if there is just empty initializer, I think we already mark
it as incomplete if there are any missing initializers. Maybe with
some designated initializer games, say

Is this supposed to initialize padding bits in C23 and then the .c.a = 1
and .c.b = 2 stores preserve those padding bits, so is that supposed
to be different from struct T t2 = { .c = { 1, 2 } };
? What about just struct T t3 = { .c.a = 1, .c.b = 2 }; ?
And I haven't touched the C++ FE for the flag, because I'm afraid I'm lost
on where exactly is zero-initialization done (vs. other types of
initialization) and where is e.g. zero-initialization of a temporary then
(member-wise) copied.

Is the c () value-initialization of t.c followed by c.a and c.b updates
which preserve the zero initialized padding bits? Or is there some
copy construction involved which does member-wise copying and makes the
padding bits undefined?
Looking at (older) clang++ with -O2, it initializes also the padding bits
when c () is used and doesn't with c {}.
For GCC, note that there is that optimization from Alex to zero padding bits
for optimization purposes for small aggregates, so either one needs to look
at -O0 -fdump-tree-gimple dumps, or use larger structures which aren't
optimized that way.

Since diagnostic.h is included in over half of the sources, requiring to `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY`
does not make sense. Instead lets unconditionally include memory in system.h.
The majority of this patch is just removing `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` from the sources which currently
have it.
This should also fix the mingw build issue but I have not tried it.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu.

extract_bit_field can't handle extraction of non-mode precision
from complex mode operands which don't live in memory, e.g. gen_lowpart
crashes on those.
The following patch in that case defers the extract_bit_field call
until op0 is forced into memory.

The following testcase ICEs, because when trying to expand the
VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR operand which is SSA_NAME defined to
V32QI or V4DI MEM_REF which is aligned just to 8 bytes we force
it as unaligned into a register, but then try to call extract_bit_field
from the V32QI or V4DI register to BLKmode. extract_bit_field doesn't
obviously support BLKmode extraction and so ICEs.
The second hunk fixes the ICE by not calling extract_bit_field when
it can't handle it, the last if will handle it properly by storing
it to memory and using BLKmode access to the copy.
The first hunk is an optimization, if mode is BLKmode, by setting
inner_reference_p argument to expand_expr_real we avoid the
expand_misaligned_mem_ref calls which load it from memory into a register.

I've tried to build stage3 with
-Wleading-whitespace=blanks -Wtrailing-whitespace=blank -Wno-error=leading-whitespace=blanks -Wno-error=trailing-whitespace=blank
added to STRICT_WARN and that expectably resulted in about
2744 unique trailing whitespace warnings and 124837 leading whitespace
warnings when excluding *.md files (which obviously is in big part a
generator issue). Others from that are generator related, I think those
need to be solved later.
The following patch just fixes up the easy case (trailing whitespace),
which could be easily automated:
for i in `find . -name \*.h -o -name \*.cc -o -name \*.c | xargs grep -l '[ ]$' | grep -v testsuite/`; do sed -i -e 's/[ ]*$//' $i; done
I've excluded files which I knew are obviously generated or go FE.

My forthcoming patches for PR other/116613 make much more use of
cloning of pretty_printers than before, so it makes sense as a
preliminary patch for the result of pretty_printer::clone to be a
std::unique_ptr, rather than add more manual uses of "delete".
On doing so, I noticed various other places where naked new/delete is
used for run-time configuration of diagnostics:
* the output format (text vs SARIF)
* client data hooks
* the option manager
* the URLifier
Hence this patch also makes use of std::unique_ptr and ::make_unique for
managing such client policy classes, and also for diagnostic_buffer's
per-format implementations.
Unfortunately we can't directly include <memory> in our internal headers
but instead any of our TUs that make use of std::unique_ptr must #define
INCLUDE_MEMORY before including system.h.
Hence the bulk of this patch is taken up with adding a define of
INCLUDE_MEMORY to hundreds of source files: everything that includes
diagnostic.h or pretty-print.h (and thus anything transitively such as
includers of lto-wrapper.h, c-tree.h, cp-tree.h and rtl-ssa.h).
Thanks to Gaius Mulley for the parts of the patch that regenerated the
m2 files.

While working on PR117028 C2Y changes, I've noticed weird ternary
operator formatting (operand1 ? operand2: operand3).
The usual formatting is operand1 ? operand2 : operand3
where we have around 18000+ cases of that (counting only what fits
on one line) and
indent -nbad -bap -nbc -bbo -bl -bli2 -bls -ncdb -nce -cp1 -cs -di2 -ndj \
-nfc1 -nfca -hnl -i2 -ip5 -lp -pcs -psl -nsc -nsob
documented in

does the same.
Some code was even trying to save space as much as possible and used
operand1?operand2:operand3 or
operand1 ? operand2:operand3
Today I've grepped for such cases (the grep was '?.*[^ ]:' and I had to
skim through various false positives with that where the : matched e.g.
stuff inside of strings, or *.md pattern macros or :: scope) and the
following patch is a fix for what I found.

This patch actually optimizes #embed, so far in C.
For a simple testcase (for 494447200 bytes long cc1plus):

Even just
./cc1plus -E -o embed-11.i embed-11.c
(which doesn't have this optimization yet and so preprocesses it as
1.3GB preprocessed file) needed almost 25GB of compile time RAM (but
preprocessed fine).
And compiling that embed-11.i with -std=c23 -O0 by unpatched gcc
I gave up after 400 seconds when it already ate 45GB of RAM and didn't
produce a single byte into embed-11.s yet.
The patch introduces a new CPP_EMBED token which contains raw memory image
virtually representing a sequence of int literals.
To simplify the parsing complexities, the preprocessor guarantees CPP_EMBED
is only emitted if there are 4+ (it actually does that for 64+ right now)
literals in the sequence and emits CPP_NUMBER CPP_COMMA CPP_EMBED CPP_COMMA
CPP_NUMBER tokens (with more CPP_EMBED separated by CPP_COMMA if it is
longer than 2GB, as STRING_CSTs in GCC and also the new RAW_DATA_CST etc.
are limited to INT_MAX elements). The main reason is that the preprocessor
doesn't really know in which context #embed directive appears, there could
be e.g.

or similar and dealing with this special case deep in the expression parsing
is undesirable.
With the CPP_NUMBERs around it, I believe in the C FE the only places which
need handling of the CPP_EMBED token are initializer parsing (that is the
only one which adds actual optimizations for it), comma expressions (I
believe nothing really cares whether it is 25,13,95 or
25,13,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,13,95 etc., so besides the 2 outer CPP_NUMBER
the parsing just adds one INTEGER_CST to the comma expression, I doubt users
want to be spammed with millions of -Wunused warnings per #embed),
whatever uses c_parser_expr_list (function calls, attribute arguments,
OpenMP sizes clause argument, OpenACC tile clause argument and whatever uses
c_parser_get_builtin_args (mainly for __builtin_shufflevector). Please correct
me if I'm wrong.
The patch introduces a RAW_DATA_CST tree code, which can then be used inside
of array CONSTRUCTOR elt values. In some sense RAW_DATA_CST is similar to
STRING_CST, but right now STRING_CST is used only if the whole array
initializer is that constant, while RAW_DATA_CST at index idx (should be
always INTEGER_CST index, another advantage of the CPP_NUMBER around is that
[30 ... 250] =

really does what it would do with a integer sequence there) stands for
[idx] = RAW_DATA_POINTER (val)[0],
[idx+1] = RAW_DATA_POINTER (val)[1],
...
[idx+RAW_DATA_LENGTH (val)-1] = RAW_DATA_POINTER (val)[RAW_DATA_LENGTH (val)-1].
Another important thing is that unlike STRING_CST which has the data
embedded in it RAW_DATA_CST doesn't own the data, it has RAW_DATA_OWNER
which owns the data (that can be a STRING_CST, e.g. used for PCH or LTO
after reading LTO in) or another RAW_DATA_CST (with NULL RAW_DATA_OWNER,
standing for data owned by libcpp buffers). The advantage is that it can be
cheaply peeled off, or split into multiple smaller pieces, e.g. if one uses
designated initializer to store something into the middle of a 10GB #embed
array, in no case we need to actually copy data around for that.
Right now RAW_DATA_CST is only used in initializers of integral arrays where
the integer type has (host) CHAR_BIT precision, so usually char/signed
char/unsigned char (for C++ later maybe std::byte); in theory we could say
allocate 4 times as big buffer for conversions to int array and depending
on endianity and storage order reversal etc., but I'm not sure if that is
something that will be actually needed in the wild.
And an optimization inside of c-common.cc attempts to undo that CPP_NUMBER
CPP_EMBED CPP_NUMBER division in case one uses #embed the usual way and
doesn't use the boundary literals in weird ways and the values there match
the surrounding bytes in the owner buffer.
For LTO, in order to avoid copying perhaps gigabytes long data around,
the hacks in the streamer out/in cause the data owned by libcpp to be
streamed right into the stream and streamed back as a STRING_CST which
owns the data.

When expanding a COND_EXPR with a vector equality compare as condition
expand_cond_expr_using_cmove fails to properly go the cbranch path.
I failed to massage it's twisted logic so the simple fix is to make
sure to expand a vector condition separately which also generates
the expected code for the testcase:

When small objects containing padding bits (or bytes) are fully
initialized, we will often store them in registers, and setting
bitfields and other small fields will attempt to preserve the
uninitialized padding bits, which tends to be expensive.
Zero-initializing registers, OTOH, tends to be cheap.
So, if we're optimizing, zero-initialize such small padded objects
even if that's not needed for correctness. We can't zero-initialize
all such padding objects, though: if there's no padding whatsoever,
and all fields are initialized with nonzero, the zero initialization
would be flagged as dead. That's why we introduce machinery to detect
whether objects have padding bits. I considered distinguishing
between bitfields, units and larger padding elements, but I didn't
pursue that distinction.
Since the object's zero-initialization subsumes fields'
zero-initialization, the empty string test in builtin-snprintf-6.c's
test_assign_aggregate would regress without the addition of
native_encode_constructor.

In get_best_extraction_insn we use smallest_int_mode_for_size with
struct_bits as size argument. PR115495 has struct_bits = 256 and we
don't have a mode for that. This patch makes smallest_mode_for_size
and smallest_int_mode_for_size return opt modes so we can just skip
over the loop when there is no mode.

ieee_quad}_format
With some historical reasons, rs6000 defines KFmode, TFmode
and IFmode to have different mode precisions, but it causes
some issues and needs some workarounds such as PR112993.
So we are going to make all rs6000 128 bit scalar FP modes
have 128 bit precision. Be prepared for that, this patch
is to make function convert_mode_scalar allow same precision
FP modes conversion if their underlying formats are
ibm_extended_format and ieee_quad_format respectively, just
like the existing special treatment on arm_bfloat_half_format
<-> ieee_half_format. It also factors out all the relevant
checks into a lambda function. Besides, similar to ieee fp16
-> bfloat conversion, it adopts trunc_optab rather than
sext_optab for ibm128 to ieee128 conversion.

This patch makes target-independent code use force_lowpart_subreg
instead of simplify_gen_subreg and lowpart_subreg in some places.
The criteria were:
(1) The code is obviously specific to expand (where new pseudos
can be created), or at least would be invalid to call when
!can_create_pseudo_p () and temporaries are needed.
(2) The value is obviously an rvalue rather than an lvalue.
Doing this should reduce the likelihood of bugs like PR115464
occuring in other situations.

expand_widen_pattern_expr [PR113212]
While working on an expand patch back in January I noticed that
the first argument (of sepops type) of expand_expr_real_2 could be
constified as it was not to be touched by the function (nor should it be).
There is code in internal-fn.cc that depends on expand_expr_real_2 not touching
the ops argument so constification makes this more obvious.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu with no regressions.

In cfgexpand, there is an optimization for branch which tests
targetm.gen_ccmp_first == NULL. However for target like x86-64, the
hook was implemented but it does not indicate that ccmp was enabled.
Add a new target hook TARGET_HAVE_CCMP and replace the middle-end
check for the existance of gen_ccmp_first to avoid misoptimization.

The HF and BF modes have the same size/precision and neither is
a subset nor superset of the other.
So, using either __extendhfbf2 or __trunchfbf2 is weird.
The expansion apparently emits __extendhfbf2, but on the libgcc side
we apparently have __trunchfbf2 implemented.
I think it is easier to switch to using what is available rather than
adding new entrypoints to libgcc, even alias, because this is backportable.

r13-990 added optimizations in multiple spots to optimize during
expansion storing of constant initializers into targets.
In the load_register_parameters and expand_expr_real_1 cases,
it checks it has a tree as the source and so knows we are reading
that whole decl's value, so the code is fine as is, but in the
emit_push_insn case it checks for a MEM from which something
is pushed and checks for SYMBOL_REF as the MEM's address, but
still assumes the whole object is copied, which as the following
testcase shows might not always be the case. In the testcase,
k is 6 bytes, then 2 bytes of padding, then another 4 bytes,
while the emit_push_insn wants to store just the 6 bytes.
The following patch simply verifies it is the whole initializer
that is being stored, I think that is best thing to do so late
in GCC 14 cycle as well for backporting.
For GCC 15, perhaps the code could stop requiring it must be at offset zero,
nor that the size is equal, but could use
get_symbol_constant_value/fold_ctor_reference gimple-fold APIs to actually
extract just part of the initializer if we e.g. push just some subset
(of course, still verify that it is a subset). For sizes which are power
of two bytes and we have some integer modes, we could use as type for
fold_ctor_reference corresponding integral types, otherwise dunno, punt
or use some structure (e.g. try to find one in the initializer?), whatever.
But even in the other spots it could perhaps handle loading of
COMPONENT_REFs or MEM_REFs from the .rodata vars.

The x86-64 and aarch64 psABIs (and the unwritten ia64 psABI part) say that
the padding bits of _BitInt are undefined, while the expansion internally
typically assumes that non-mode precision integers are sign/zero extended
and extends after operations. We handle that mismatch with EXTEND_BITINT
done when reading from untrusted sources like function arguments, reading
_BitInt from memory etc. but otherwise keep relying on stuff being extended
internally (say in pseudos).
The return value of a function is an ABI boundary though too and we need
to extend that too.

The following zeros paddings of vector bools when expanding compares
and the mode used for the compare is an integer mode. In that case
targets cannot distinguish between a 4 element and 8 element vector
compare (both get to the QImode compare optab) so we have to do the
job in the middle-end.

INTEGER_TYPEs [PR113783]
On the following testcases memcpy lowering folds the calls to
reading and writing of MEM_REFs with huge INTEGER_TYPEs - uint256_t
with OImode or uint512_t with XImode. Further optimization turn
the load from MEM_REF from the large/huge _BitInt var into VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR
from it to the uint256_t/uint512_t. The backend doesn't really
support those except for "movoi"/"movxi" insns, so it isn't possible
to handle it like casts to supportable INTEGER_TYPEs where we can
construct those from individual limbs - there are no OImode/XImode shifts
and the like we can use.
So, the following patch makes sure for such VCEs that the SSA_NAME operand
of the VCE lives in memory and then turns it into a VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR so
that we actually load the OImode/XImode integer from memory (i.e. a mov).
We need to make sure those aren't merged with other
operations in the gimple_lower_bitint hunks.
For SSA_NAMEs which have underlying VAR_DECLs that is all we need, those
VAR_DECL have ARRAY_TYPEs.
For SSA_NAMEs which have underlying PARM_DECLs or RESULT_DECLs those have
BITINT_TYPE and I had to tweak expand_expr_real_1 for that so that it
doesn't try convert_modes on those when one of the modes is BLKmode - we
want to fall through into the adjust_address on the MEM.

The following implements storing to a non-MEM_P with a variable
offset. We usually avoid this by forcing expansion to memory but
this doesn't work for hard register variables. The solution is
to spill and operate on the stack.

Ccmp is not used if the result of the and/ior is used by both
a GIMPLE_COND and a GIMPLE_ASSIGN. This improves the code generation
here by using ccmp in this case.
Two changes is required, first we need to allow the outer statement's
result be used more than once.
The second change is that during the expansion of the gimple, we need
to try using ccmp. This is needed because we don't use expand the ssa
name of the lhs but rather expand directly from the gimple.
A small note on the ccmp_4.c testcase, we should be able to get slightly
better than with this patch but it is one extra instruction compared to
before.

On aarch64 the backend decides to use non-BLKmode for some arrays
like unsigned long[4] - OImode in that case, but the corresponding
BITINT_TYPEs have BLKmode (like structures containing that many limb
elements).
This later causes ICEs durring expansion when expanding VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR
from non-BLKmode VAR_DECL to BLKmode BITINT_TYPE.
The following fix contains two parts, the discover_nonconstant_array_refs_r
is make sure we force such variables into memory and the expand_expr_real_1
change makes sure we don't try to extract a bitfield or something similar
which doesn't really work for BLKmode - as op0 is a MEM, all we need is
the op0 = adjust_address (op0, mode, 0); at the end to change the MEM's mode
to BLKmode.

The problem here is after the recent vectorizer improvements, we end up
with a comparison against a vector bool 0 which then tries expand_single_bit_test
which is not expecting vector comparisons at all.
The IR was:

works only for dense masks but it failed to check that.

This patch fixes PR rtl-optmization/104914 by tweaking/improving the way
the fields are written into a pseudo register that needs to be kept sign
extended.

Here four bytes are being sequentially written into the SImode value
val. On some platforms, such as MIPS64, this SImode value is kept in
a 64-bit register, suitably sign-extended. The function expand_assignment
contains logic to handle this via SUBREG_PROMOTED_VAR_P (around line 6264
in expr.cc) which outputs an explicit extension operation after each
store_field (typically insv) to such promoted/extended pseudos.
The first observation is that there's no need to perform sign extension
after each byte in the example above; the extension is only required
after changes to the most significant byte (i.e. to a field that overlaps
the most significant bit).
The bug fix is actually a bit more subtle, but at this point during
code expansion it's not safe to use a SUBREG when sign-extending this
field. Currently, GCC generates (sign_extend:DI (subreg:SI (reg:DI) 0))
but combine (and other RTL optimizers) later realize that because SImode
values are always sign-extended in their 64-bit hard registers that
this is a no-op and eliminates it. The trouble is that it's unsafe to
refer to the SImode lowpart of a 64-bit register using SUBREG at those
critical points when temporarily the value isn't correctly sign-extended,
and the usual backend invariants don't hold. At these critical points,
the middle-end needs to use an explicit TRUNCATE rtx (as this isn't a
TRULY_NOOP_TRUNCATION), so that the explicit sign-extension looks like
(sign_extend:DI (truncate:SI (reg:DI)), which avoids the problem.

After r14-1655-g52c92fb3f40050 (and the other commits
which touch zero_one_valued_p), we end up with a with
`bool * a` but where the bool is an SSA name that might not
have non-zero bits set on it (to 0x1) even though it
does the non-zero bits would be 0x1.
The case of coremarks, it is only phiopt4 which adds the new
ssa name and nothing afterwards updates the nonzero bits on it.
This fixes the regression by using gimple_zero_one_valued_p
rather than tree_nonzero_bits to match the cases where the
SSA_NAME didn't have the non-zero bits set.
gimple_zero_one_valued_p handles one level of cast and also
and an `&`.
Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu.

The following testcaser ICEs during gimplification, because
count_type_elements doesn't handle BITINT_TYPE. It should handle it like
other integral types.

try_store_by_multiple_pieces was added not long ago, enabling
variable-sized memset to be expanded inline when the worst-case
in-range constant length would, using conditional blocks with powers
of two to cover all possibilities of length and alignment.
This patch introduces -finline-stringops[=fn] to request expansions to
start with a loop, so as to still take advantage of known alignment
even with long lengths, but without necessarily adding store blocks
for every power of two.
This makes it possible for the supported stringops (memset, memcpy,
memmove, memset) to be expanded, even if storing a single byte per
iteration. Surely efficient implementations can run faster, with a
pre-loop to increase alignment, but that would likely be excessive for
inline expansions.
Still, in some cases, such as in freestanding environments, users
prefer to inline such stringops, especially those that the compiler
may introduce itself, even if the expansion is not as performant as a
highly optimized C library implementation could be, to avoid
depending on a C runtime library.

The by pieces compare can be implemented by overlapped operations. So
it should be taken into consideration when doing the adjustment for
overlap operations. The mode returned from
widest_fixed_size_mode_for_size is already checked with mov_optab in
by_pieces_mode_supported_p called by widest_fixed_size_mode_for_size.
So it is no need to check mov_optab again in by_pieces_ninsns. The
patch fixes these issues.
gcc/
* expr.cc (by_pieces_ninsns): Include by pieces compare when
do the adjustment for overlap operations. Replace mov_optab
checks with gcc assertion.

As the following testcase shows, we ICE when trying to emit ADDR_EXPR of
a bitint variable which doesn't have mode width.
The problem is in the EXTEND_BITINT stuff which makes sure we treat the
padding bits on memory reads from user bitint vars as undefined.
When expanding ADDR_EXPR on such vars inside outside of initializers,
expand_expr_addr* uses EXPAND_CONST_ADDRESS modifier and EXTEND_BITINT
does nothing, but in initializers it keeps using EXPAND_INITIALIZER
modifier. So, we need to treat EXPAND_INITIALIZER the same as
EXPAND_CONST_ADDRESS for this regard.

Most targets have an "and" instructions for their vector mask size, but RISC-V
only has DImode "and". Fixed by allowing wider instruction modes.

AVX ignores any excess bits in the mask (at least for vector sizes >=8), but
AMD GCN magically uses a larger vector than was intended (the smaller sizes are
"fake"), leading to wrong-code.
This patch fixes amdgcn execution failures in gcc.dg/vect/pr81740-1.c,
gfortran.dg/c-interop/contiguous-1.f90,
gfortran.dg/c-interop/ff-descriptor-7.f90, and others.

The former patch (f08ca5903c7) examines the scalar modes by target
hook scalar_mode_supported_p. It causes some i386 regression cases
as XImode and OImode are not enabled in i386 target function. This
patch examines the scalar mode by checking if the corresponding optabs
are available for the mode.

* expr.cc (qi_vector_mode_supported_p): Rename to...
(by_pieces_mode_supported_p): ...this, and extends it to do
the checking for both scalar and vector mode.
(widest_fixed_size_mode_for_size): Call
