Hello,
For -gdwarf-3 and newer, the DWARF back-end sometimes generates DWARF
procedures to factorize complex location descriptions. DWARF procedures
can be materialized as DW_TAG_dwarf_procedure DIEs, but actually any DIE
that can hold a DW_AT_location attribute is also accepted.
Unlike what I thought at some point, the DW_TAG_dwarf_procedure tag was
introduced in the DWARFv3 standard, not the DWARFv4 one, so the back-end
can always emit DW_TAG_dwarf_procedure DIEs, as this simplifies code and
prevents the types pruning pass from missing a DWARF procedure.
Boostrapped and regtested on x86_64-linux: no regression. Ok to commit?
Thank you in advance!
gcc/
* dwarf2out.c (copy_dwarf_procedure): Remove obsolete comment.
(new_dwarf_proc_die): Emit DW_TAG_dwarf_procedure DIEs even for

Although C++ reference types, denoted by DW_TAG_reference_type in
DWARFv2+ debug info, are unchangeable, we output names of reference type
with DW_TAG_const_type, because internally we mark such variables as
TREE_READONLY. That's an internal implementation detail that shouldn't
leak to debug information. This patch fixes this.

We used to emit, in debug information, the values bound to pointer to
member function template parameters only when they were NULL or
virtual member functions, because those can be represented with
DW_AT_const_value.
In order to represent the symbolic pointer to member function
constants for non-virtual member functions, we'd need to be able to
emit relocations for part of DW_AT_const_value, which we don't. The
more viable alternative is to use DW_AT_location to represent such
values, as slated for inclusion in DWARFv5, according to
<URL:http://www.dwarfstd.org/ShowIssue.php?issue=130412.1>.
With this patch, when we can't emit a DW_AT_const_value, we emit each
"member" of the pointer to member function "record" as a
DW_OP_stack_value DW_OP_piece, as long as the referenced member
function is output in the same translation unit, otherwise we'd get
relocations to external symbols, something to avoid in debug sections.

When the DWARF back-end generates DW_OP_neg operations in DWARF
procedures, we get an ICE because of inconsistent stack usage
computation for the embedding expression. This is because
resolve_args_picking_1 thinks DW_OP_neg is a binary operation (pops 2
stack slots, pushes 1) whereas it really is an unary one (one pop, one
push).
This change fixes resolve_args_picking_1 and adds a regression testcase
(which crashes with the current trunk). Bootstrapped and regtested
without regression on x86_64-linux.

Track from which abstract lexical block concrete ones come from in DWARF
so that debuggers can inherit the former from the latter. This enables
debuggers to properly handle the following case:
* function Child2 is nested in a lexical block, itself nested in
function Child1;
* function Child1 is inlined into some call site;
* function Child2 is never inlined.
Here, Child2 is described in DWARF only in the abstract instance of
Child1. So when debuggers decode Child1's concrete instances, they need
to fetch the definition for Child2 in the corresponding abstract
instance: the DW_AT_abstract_origin link on the lexical block that
embeds Child1 enables them to do that.
Bootstrapped and regtested on x86_64-linux.

Under specific circumstances for Ada programs, such as in the testcase
this change adds, the DWARF back-end currently crashes because of
inconsistent internal state. This is due to a typo: a local variable is

emit-rtl.h's frame_offset instead.
This change fixes this typo.

As discussed on
<https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2016-02/msg01708.html>, this change
removes a field in the dw_loc_descr_node structure so we can get rid of
the CHECKING_P macro usage.
This field was used to perform consistency checks for frame offset in
DWARF procedures. As a replacement, this commit turns the "visited
nodes" set in resolve_args_picking_1 into a map that remembers for each
dw_loc_descr_node the frame offset associated to it, so that the
consistency check is still operational.
Boostrapped and regtested on x86_64-linux.

Many artificial types are introduced by GNAT in order to satisfy
constraints in GCC's internal trees or to generate optimal code. These
hide original types from sources and miss useful information in the
debugging information or add noise to it and make debugging confusing.
This change introduces a new language hook to give a chance to
front-ends to restore the source types in the debugging information.
This change also enhance the array descriptor language hook to handle
array-wide bit/byte stride. Some arrays may contain dynamically-sized
objects. Debuggers need for these a hint to know the size allocated for
each element, hence the need for the array-wide bit/byte stride.
The Ada front-end is enhanced to take advantage of both hooks when
-fgnat-encodings=minimal, in order to keep compatibility with GDB.

constrained record subtypes's debug type to the base type.
* gcc-interface/misc.c (gnat_print_type): Print debug types.
(gnat_get_debug_type): New.
(gnat_get_array_descr_info): When -fgnat-encodings=minimal, set
a byte stride for arrays that contain a type whose debug type

byte size. For library-level padding types, share this variable
across translation units. Tag XVZ variables as artificial.

Enhance the DWARF back-end to emit proper descriptions for
variable-length records as well as variant parts in records.
In order to achieve this, generate DWARF expressions ("location
descriptions" in dwarf2out's parlance) for size and data member location
attributes. Also match QUAL_UNION_TYPE data types as variant parts,
assuming the formers appear only to implement the latters (which is the
case at the moment: only the Ada front-end emits them).
Note that very few debuggers can handle these descriptions (GDB does not
yet), so in order to ease the the transition enable these only when
-fgnat-encodings=minimal.
