Since PR37922 fix RTL DSE has hard register conflict checking
in replace_read, so that if the replacement sequence sets (or typically just
clobbers) some hard register (usually condition codes) we verify that
hard register is not live.
Unfortunately, it compares the hard reg set clobbered/set by the sequence
(regs_set) against the currently live hard register set, but it then
emits the insn sequence not at the current insn position, but before
store_insn->insn.
So, we should not compare against the current live hard register set,
but against the hard register live set at the point of the store insn.
Fortunately, we already have that remembered in store_insn->fixed_regs_live.
In addition to bootstrapping/regtesting this patch on x86_64-linux and
i686-linux, I've also added statistics gathering and it seems the only
place where we end up rejecting the replace_read is the newly added
testcase (the PR37922 is no longer effective at that) and fixed_regs_live
has been always non-NULL at the if (store_insn->fixed_regs_live) spot.
Rather than having there an assert, I chose to just keep regs_set
as is, which means in that hypothetical case where fixed_regs_live wouldn't
be computed for some store we'd still accept sequences that don't
clobber/set any hard registers and just punt on those that clobber/set
those.

The following avoids repeatedly turning VALUE RTXen into
sth useful and re-applying a constant offset through get_addr
via DSE check_mem_read_rtx. Instead perform this once for
all stores to be visited in check_mem_read_rtx. This avoids
allocating 1.6GB of garbage PLUS RTXen on the PR80960
testcase, fixing the memory usage regression from old GCC.

dse.c:find_shift_sequence tries to represent a store and load
back as a shift right followed by a truncation. It therefore
needs to find an integer mode in which to do the shift right.
The loop it uses has the form:
FOR_EACH_MODE_FROM (new_mode_iter,
smallest_int_mode_for_size (GET_MODE_BITSIZE (read_mode)))
which implicitly assumes that read_mode has an equivalent integer mode.
As shown in the testcase, not all modes have such an integer mode.
This patch just makes the code start from the smallest integer mode and
skip modes that are too small. The loop already breaks at the first
mode wider than word_mode.

As discussed in the PR, if !ACCUMULATE_OUTGOING_ARGS on large functions we
can have hundreds of thousands of stack pointer adjustments and cselib
creates a new VALUE after each sp adjustment, which form extremely deep
VALUE chains, which is very harmful e.g. for find_base_term.
E.g. if we have
sp -= 4
sp -= 4
sp += 4
sp += 4
sp -= 4
sp += 4
that means 7 VALUEs, one for the sp at beginning (val1), than val2 = val1 -
4, then val3 = val2 - 4, then val4 = val3 + 4, then val5 = val4 + 4, then
val6 = val5 - 4, then val7 = val6 + 4.
This patch tweaks cselib, so that it is smarter about sp adjustments.
When cselib_lookup (stack_pointer_rtx, Pmode, 1, VOIDmode) and we know
nothing about sp yet (this happens at the start of the function, for
non-var-tracking also after cselib_reset_table and for var-tracking after
processing fp_setter insn where we forget about former sp values because
that is now hfp related while everything after it is sp related), we
look it up normally, but in addition to what we have been doing before
we mark the VALUE as SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P. Further lookups of sp + offset
are then special cased, so that it is canonicalized to that
SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P VALUE + CONST_INT (if possible). So, for the above,
we get val1 with SP_DERIVED_VALUE_P set, then val2 = val1 - 4, val3 = val1 -
8 (note, no longer val2 - 4!), then we get val2 again, val1 again, val2
again, val1 again.
In the find_base_term visited_vals.length () > 100 find_base_term
statistics during combined x86_64-linux and i686-linux bootstrap+regtest
cycle, without the patch I see:
find_base_term > 100
returning NULL returning non-NULL
32-bit compilations 4229178 407

with largest visited_vals.length () when returning non-NULL being 206.
With the patch the same numbers are:

This shows significant reduction of the deep VALUE chains.
On powerpc64{,le}-linux, these stats didn't change at all, we have
1008 0
for all of -m32, -m64 and little-endian -m64, just the
gcc.dg/pr85180.c and gcc.dg/pr87985.c testcases which are unrelated to sp.
My earlier version of the patch, which contained just the rtl.h and cselib.c
changes, regressed some tests:

The problem with the former tests was worse debug info, where with -m32
where arg7 was passed in a stack slot we though a push later on might have
invalidated it, when it couldn't. This is something I've solved with the
var-tracking.c (vt_initialize) changes. In those problematic functions, we
create a cfa_base VALUE (argp) and want to record that at the start of
the function the argp VALUE is sp + off and also record that current sp
VALUE is argp's VALUE - off. The second permanent equivalence didn't make
it after the patch though, because cselib_add_permanent_equiv will
cselib_lookup the value of the expression it wants to add as the equivalence
and if it is the same VALUE as we are calling it on, it doesn't do anything;
and due to the cselib changes for sp based accesses that is exactly what
happened. By reversing the order of the cselib_add_permanent_equiv calls we
get both equivalences though and thus are able to canonicalize the sp based
accesses in var-tracking to the cfa_base value + offset.
The i386 FAILs were all ICEs, where we had pushf instruction pushing flags
and then pop pseudo reading that value again. With the cselib changes,
cselib during RTL DSE is able to see through the sp adjustment and wanted
to replace_read what was done pushf, by moving the flags register into a
pseudo and replace the memory read in the pop with that pseudo. That is
wrong for two reasons: one is that the backend doesn't have an instruction
to move the flags hard register into some other register, but replace_read
has been validating just the mem -> pseudo replacement and not the insns
emitted by copy_to_mode_reg. And the second issue is that it is obviously
wrong to replace a stack pop which contains stack post-increment by a copy
of pseudo into destination. dse.c has some code to handle RTX_AUTOINC, but
only uses it when actually removing stores and only when there is REG_INC
note (stack RTX_AUTOINC does not have those), in check_for_inc_dec* where
it emits the reg adjustment(s) before the insn that is going to be deleted.
replace_read doesn't remove the insn, so if it e.g. contained REG_INC note,
it would be kept there and we might have the RTX_AUTOINC not just in *loc,
but other spots.
So, the dse.c changes try to validate the added insns and punt on all
RTX_AUTOINC in *loc. Furthermore, it seems that with the cselib.c changes
on the gfortran.dg/pr87360.f90 and gcc.target/i386/pr88416.c testcases
check_for_inc_dec{,_1} happily throws stack pointer autoinc on the floor,
which is also wrong. While we could perhaps do the for_each_inc_dec
call regardless of whether we have REG_INC note or not, we aren't prepared
to handle e.g. REG_ARGS_SIZE distribution and thus could end up with wrong
unwind info or ICEs during dwarf2cfi.c. So the patch also punts on those,
after all, if we'd in theory managed to try to optimize such pushes before,
we'd create wrong-code.
On x86_64-linux and i686-linux, the patch has some minor debug info coverage
differences, but it doesn't appear very significant to me.

This fixes a common mistake in removing a store that looks redudnant but
is not because it changes the dynamic type of the memory and thus makes
a difference for following loads with TBAA.

We currently maintain global REG_SET versions of fixed_reg_set
and regs_invalidated_by_call. With bitmap_view, we can instead
operate directly on the underlying HARD_REG_SETs, avoiding the
need to keep the two pieces of data in sync.
I have a series of patches that removes the assumption that there's
a single global ABI for all functions in the translation unit,
which includes not relying on having a global regs_invalidated_by_call.
Removing the REG_SET equivalent is one step to doing that.
Note that the affected DF code is used for EH edges or dumping only,
so shouldn't be performance critical.

I have a series of patches that (as a side effect) makes all rtl
passes use the information collected by -fipa-ra. This showed up a
latent bug in the liveness tracking in regrename.c, which doesn't take
CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE into account when processing clobbers.
This actually seems to be quite a common problem with passes that use
note_stores; only a handful remember to walk CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE
too. I think it was just luck that I saw it with regrename first.
This patch tries to make things more robust by passing an insn rather
than a pattern to note_stores. The old function is still available
as note_pattern_stores for the few places that need it.
When updating callers, I've erred on the side of using note_stores
rather than note_pattern_stores, because IMO note_stores should be
the default choice and we should only use note_pattern_stores if
there's a specific reason. Specifically:
* For cselib.c, "body" may be a COND_EXEC_CODE instead of the main
insn pattern.
* For ira.c, I wasn't sure whether extending no_equiv to
CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE really made sense, since we don't do that
for normal call-clobbered registers. Same for mark_not_eliminable
in reload1.c
* Some other places only have a pattern available, and since those
places wouldn't benefit from walking CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE,
it seemed better to alter the code as little as possible.
* In the config/ changes, quite a few callers have already weeded
out CALL insns. It still seemed better to use note_stores rather
than prematurely optimise. (note_stores should tail call to
note_pattern_stores once it sees that the insn isn't a call.)
The patch also documents what SETs mean in CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE.

There seems to be a bit of confusion around this one. Almost all
callers pass the same arguments as TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG, meaning
that the mode is the promoted mode rather than the type mode.
But the calls.c handling for normal typed arguments instead passes
the unpromoted TYPE_MODE (despite passing the promoted mode to
TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG). I've kept this behaviour with a ??? comment.
(The calls.c handling of libgcc functions does pass the promoted
mode though, as does the function.c handling of incoming arguments.)
Also, a couple of the arm callers don't seem to be using the hook
correctly. Again I kept the current choices and added a ??? comment.

This patch makes both TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG and
TARGET_FUNCTION_INCOMING_ARG take a function_arg_info.
They have to be done together since many targets use the
same function for both.
The hooks are passed the promoted mode instead of the original type mode.

The patch adds a check if the gap is compile-time constant.
This happens when dse decides to replace the load with previous store value.
The problem is that, shift sequence could not accept compile-time non-constant

This patch changes SUBREG_BYTE from an int to a poly_int.
Since valid SUBREG_BYTEs must be contained within the mode of the
SUBREG_REG, the required range is the same as for GET_MODE_SIZE,
i.e. unsigned short. The patch therefore uses poly_uint16(_pod)
for the SUBREG_BYTE.
Using poly_uint16_pod rtx fields requires a new field code ('p').
Since there are no other uses of 'p' besides SUBREG_BYTE, the patch
doesn't add an XPOLY or whatever; all uses should go via SUBREG_BYTE
instead.
The patch doesn't bother implementing 'p' support for legacy
define_peepholes, since none of the remaining ones have subregs
in their patterns.
As it happened, the rtl documentation used SUBREG as an example of a
code with mixed field types, accessed via XEXP (x, 0) and XINT (x, 1).
Since there's no direct replacement for XINT, and since people should
never use it even if there were, the patch changes the example to use
INT_LIST instead.
The patch also changes subreg-related helper functions so that they too
take and return polynomial offsets. This makes the patch quite big, but
it's mostly mechanical. The patch generally sticks to existing choices
wrt signedness.

This patch changes the MEM_OFFSET and MEM_SIZE memory attributes
from HOST_WIDE_INT to poly_int64. Most of it is mechanical,
but there is one nonbovious change in widen_memory_access.
Previously the main while loop broke with:

when the offset isn't known (and thus might be negative).
As it happens, the "! attrs.offset_known_p" condition was
always false, because we'd already nullified attrs.expr in
that case:

attrs.expr = NULL_TREE;
The patch therefore drops "! attrs.offset_known_p ||" when
converting the offset check to the may/must interface.

is one step towards allowing CONST_INTs to have a real mode.
One long-standing problem has been to decide what the mode
of a shift count should be for arbitrary rtxes (as opposed to those
directly tied to a target pattern). Realistic choices would be
the mode of the shifted elements, word_mode, QImode, a 64-bit mode,
or the same mode as the shift optabs (in which case what should the
mode be when the target doesn't have a pattern?)
For now the patch picks a 64-bit mode, but with a ??? comment.

store_info and read_info_type in dse.c represented the ranges as
start/end, but a lot of the internal code used offset/width instead.
Using offset/width throughout fits better with the poly_int.h
range-checking functions.

This patch adds a wrapper around smallest_mode_for_size
for cases in which the mode class is MODE_INT. Unlike
(int_)mode_for_size, smallest_mode_for_size always returns
a mode of the specified class, asserting if no such mode exists.
smallest_int_mode_for_size therefore returns a scalar_int_mode
rather than an opt_scalar_int_mode.

The new iterators are:
- FOR_EACH_MODE_IN_CLASS: iterate over all the modes in a mode class.
- FOR_EACH_MODE_FROM: iterate over all the modes in a class,
starting at a given mode.
- FOR_EACH_WIDER_MODE: iterate over all the modes in a class,
starting at the next widest mode after a given mode.
- FOR_EACH_2XWIDER_MODE: same, but considering only modes that
are two times wider than the previous mode.
- FOR_EACH_MODE_UNTIL: iterate over all the modes in a class until
a given mode is reached.
- FOR_EACH_MODE: iterate over all the modes in a class between
two given modes, inclusive of the first but not the second.
These help with the stronger type checking added by later patches,
since every new mode will be in the same class as the previous one.
