2023-12-01doc: Update the status of build directory not fully separatedXi Ruoyao1-3/+2
Recently there are some people building GCC with srcdir == objdir and the attempts just failed [1]. So stop to say "it should work". OTOH objdir as a subdirectory of srcdir works: we've built GCC in LFS [2] and BLFS [3] this way for decades and this is confirmed during the review of a previous version of this patch [4]. This patch updates gettext.m4 and related .m4 files and adds gettext-runtime as a gmp/mpfr/... style host library, allowing newer libintl to be used. This patch /does not/ add build-time tools required for internationalizing (msgfmt et al), instead, it just updates the runtime library. The result should be a distribution that acts exactly the same when a copy of gettext is present, and disables internationalization otherwise. There should be no changes in behavior when gettext is included in-tree. When gettext is not included in tree, nor available on the system, the programs will be built without localization. 2023-10-19amdgcn: deprecate Fiji device and multilibAndrew Stubbs1-2/+17
LLVM wants to remove it, which breaks our build. This patch means that most users won't notice that change, when it comes, and those that do will have chosen to enable Fiji explicitly. I'm selecting gfx900 as the new default as that's the least likely for users to want, which means most users will specify -march explicitly, which means we'll be free to change the default again, when we need to, without breaking anybody's makefiles. gcc/ChangeLog: * config.gcc (amdgcn): Switch default to --with-arch=gfx900. Implement support for --with-multilib-list. * config/gcn/t-gcn-hsa: Likewise. * doc/install.texi: Likewise. * doc/invoke.texi: Mark Fiji deprecated.
2023-09-05LoongArch: add new configure option --with-strict-align-libYang Yujie1-0/+4
LoongArch processors may not support memory accesses without natural alignments. Building libraries with -mstrict-align may help with toolchain binary compatiblity and performance on these implementations (e.g. Loongson 2K1000LA). No significant performance degredation is observed on current mainstream LoongArch processors when the option is enabled. gcc/ChangeLog: * config.gcc: use -mstrict-align for building libraries if --with-strict-align-lib is given. * doc/install.texi: likewise.

The configure script and the GCC driver are updated so that it is easier to customize and control GCC builds for targeting different LoongArch implementations. * Make --with-abi obsolete, since it might cause different default ABI under the same target triplet, which is undesirable. The default ABI is now purely decided by the target triplet. * Support options for LoongArch SIMD extensions: new configure options --with-simd={none,lsx,lasx}; new compiler option -msimd={none,lsx,lasx}; new driver options -m[no]-l[a]sx. * Enforce the priority of configuration paths (for <parm>={fpu,tune,simd}): -m<parm> > -march-implied > --with-<parm> > --with-arch-implied. * Allow the user to control the compiler options used when building GCC libraries for each multilib variant via --with-multilib-list and --with-multilib-default. This could become more useful when we have 32-bit support later. 2023-06-22configure: Implement --enable-host-bind-nowMarek Polacek1-0/+6
As promised in the --enable-host-pie patch, this patch adds another configure option, --enable-host-bind-now, which adds -z now when linking the compiler executables in order to extend hardening. BIND_NOW with RELRO allows the GOT to be marked RO; this prevents GOT modification attacks. This option does not affect linking of target libraries; you can use LDFLAGS_FOR_TARGET=-Wl,-z,relro,-z,now to enable RELRO/BIND_NOW. [ This is my third attempt to add this configure option. The first version was approved but it came too late in the development cycle. The second version was also approved, but I had to revert it: <https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2022-November/607082.html>. I've fixed the problem (by moving $(PICFLAG) from INTERNAL_CFLAGS to ALL_COMPILERFLAGS). Another change is that since r13-4536 I no longer need to touch Makefile.def, so this patch is simplified. ] This patch implements the --enable-host-pie configure option which makes the compiler executables PIE. This can be used to enhance protection against ROP attacks, and can be viewed as part of a wider trend to harden binaries. It is similar to the option --enable-host-shared, except that --e-h-s won't add -shared to the linker flags whereas --e-h-p will add -pie. It is different from --enable-default-pie because that option just adds an implicit -fPIE/-pie when the compiler is invoked, but the compiler itself isn't PIE. Since r12-5768-gfe7c3ecf, PCH works well with PIE, so there are no PCH regressions. When building the compiler, the build process may use various in-tree libraries; these need to be built with -fPIE so that it's possible to use them when building a PIE. For instance, when --with-included-gettext is in effect, intl object files must be compiled with -fPIE. Similarly, when building in-tree gmp, isl, mpfr and mpc, they must be compiled with -fPIE. install.texi needs some updates for GCC 13 and trunk: * We used a mixture of Solaris 2 and Solaris references. Since Solaris 1/SunOS 4 is ancient history by now, consistently use Solaris everywhere. Likewise, explicit references to Solaris 11 can go in many places since Solaris 11.3 and 11.4 is all GCC supports. * Some caveats apply to both Solaris/SPARC and x86, like the difference between as and gas. * Some specifics are obsolete, like the /usr/ccs/bin path whose contents was merged into /usr/bin in Solaris 11.0 already. Likewise, /bin/sh is ksh93 since Solaris 11.0, so there's no need to explicitly use /bin/ksh. * I've removed the reference to OpenCSW: there's barely a need for external sites to get additional packages. OpenCSW is mostly unmaintained these days and has been found to be rather harmful then helping. * The section on assembler and linker to use was partially duplicated. Better keep the info in one place. * GNAT is bundled in recent Solaris 11.4 updates, so recommend that. There has been recent discussion on updating the minimum required version of Texinfo from the current version 4.7. This patch does not do that, but it suggests that people use a more recent version to get better output. It also removes some other references to Texinfo 4.7 and fixes some related bit-rot in the installation manual. This change is a generalization of r13-6292-gddf6fe375d9110. Historically, makeinfo exhibited a bug, due to which a structure like: @item foo @cindex foo @cindex bar ... would be transformed into an item heading, with the first index entry on it, followed by an item body, with the second index entry in it. This has often lead to index entries not linking to relevant items, but rather, just below them. This bug was exhibited in both Info and HTML documentation, and was most glaringly obvious in the latter. After a discussion with the Texinfo developers, it was decided that the appropriate construct for this case is: @cindex foo @cindex bar @item foo ... which behaves correctly in newer versions, linking all the index entries to the item itself. This pattern also produces copiable anchors in HTML output. This commit fixes most indices to follow the pattern above, however, omits relevant changes in the Ada manuals, as the algorithm described below lead to many false positives and unwanted changes in that manual. Much like the previous commit, this change is mostly mechanical, with a simple script. I have, however, gone over the patch myself also, to see if there's anything that ought to be kept as-is. 2023-01-23install.texi: Bump newlib version for nvptx + gcnTobias Burnus1-2/+2
Before, newlib 3.2 was required for amdgcn and 3.1 for nvptx. Now recommended is 4.3.0 which was just released on 2023-01-20. While currently the old versions would work fine, upcoming GCC changes depend on a newer newlib. Thus, the minimal version is bumped instead of just recommending the new version. For GCN, the bump is in preparation for permitting non-threadlocal stack variables and vectorized math functions - both scheduled for GCC 13 and added to newlib in 4.3.0. For nvptx, this includes an emulated clock (commit 6bb96d13a), a calloc fix (5fca4e0f1) and changes to permit libgfortran to be compiled with I/O support instead of only in minimal mode. This patch implements the --enable-host-pie configure option which makes the compiler executables PIE. This can be used to enhance protection against ROP attacks, and can be viewed as part of a wider trend to harden binaries. It is similar to the option --enable-host-shared, except that --e-h-s won't add -shared to the linker flags whereas --e-h-p will add -pie. It is different from --enable-default-pie because that option just adds an implicit -fPIE/-pie when the compiler is invoked, but the compiler itself isn't PIE. Since r12-5768-gfe7c3ecf, PCH works well with PIE, so there are no PCH regressions. When building the compiler, the build process may use various in-tree libraries; these need to be built with -fPIE so that it's possible to use them when building a PIE. For instance, when --with-included-gettext is in effect, intl object files must be compiled with -fPIE. Similarly, when building in-tree gmp, isl, mpfr and mpc, they must be compiled with -fPIE. I plan to add an option to link with -Wl,-z,now.
