As mentioned in the PR, this patch breaks e.g. ccache testsuite.
I strongly doubt most of the users want such a behavior, because it
makes all filenames absolute when -f*-prefix-map= options remap one
absolute path to another one.
Say if I'm in /tmp and /tmp is the canonical path and there is
src/test.c file, with -fdebug-prefix-map=/tmp=/blah
previously there would be DW_AT_comp_dir "/blah" and it is still there,
but DW_AT_name which was previouly "src/test.c" (relative against
DW_AT_comp_dir) is now "/blah/src/test.c" instead.
Even worse, the canonicalization is only done on the remap_filename
argument, but not on the old_prefix side. That is e.g. what breaks
ccache. If there is
/tmp/foobar1 directory and
ln -sf foobar1 /tmp/foobar2
cd /tmp/foobar2
then -fdebug-prefix-map=`pwd`:/blah will just not work, while
src/test.c will be canonicalized to /tmp/foobar1/src/test.c,
old_prefix is still what the user provided which is /tmp/foobar2.
User would need to change their uses to use -fdebug-prefix-map=`realpath $(pwd)`=/blah
I've created 3 patches for this.
The first patch just reverts the patch (and its follow-up patch).
The second introduces a new option, -f{,no}-canon-prefix-map which affects
the behavior of -f{file,macro,debug,profile}-prefix-map=, if on it
canonicalizes the old path of the prefix map option and compares that
against the canonicalized filename for absolute paths but not relative.
And last is like the second, but does that also for relative paths except
for filenames with no / (or / or \ on DOS based fs). So, the third patch
gets an optional behavior of what has been on the trunk lately with the
difference that the old_prefix is canonicalized by the compiler.
Initially I've thought I'd just add some magic syntax to the OLD=NEW
argument of those options (because there are 4 of them), but as noted
in the comments, = is valid char in OLD (just not new), so it would
be hard to figure out some syntax. So instead a new option, which one
can turn on and off for different -f*-prefix-map= options if needed.
-fdebug-prefix-map=/path1=/mypath1 -fcanon-prefix-map \
-fdebug-prefix-map=/path2=/mypath2 -fno-canon-prefix-map \
-fdebug-prefix-map=/path3=/mypath3
will use the old behavior for the /path1 and /path3 handling and
the new one only for /path2 handling.
This commit is the third patch described above.

This change is a generalization of r13-6292-gddf6fe375d9110.
Historically, makeinfo exhibited a bug, due to which a structure like:
@item foo
@cindex foo
@cindex bar
... would be transformed into an item heading, with the first index
entry on it, followed by an item body, with the second index entry in
it. This has often lead to index entries not linking to relevant items,
but rather, just below them.
This bug was exhibited in both Info and HTML documentation, and was most
glaringly obvious in the latter.
After a discussion with the Texinfo developers, it was decided that the
appropriate construct for this case is:
@cindex foo
@cindex bar
@item foo
... which behaves correctly in newer versions, linking all the index
entries to the item itself. This pattern also produces copiable
anchors in HTML output.
This commit fixes most indices to follow the pattern above, however,
omits relevant changes in the Ada manuals, as the algorithm described
below lead to many false positives and unwanted changes in that manual.
Much like the previous commit, this change is mostly mechanical, with a
simple script. I have, however, gone over the patch myself also, to see
if there's anything that ought to be kept as-is. Formatter:

This commit adds the -fmacro-prefix-map option that allows remapping of file
names in __FILE__, __BASE_FILE__, and __builtin_FILE(), similar to how
-fdebug-prefix-map allows to do the same for debug information.
Additionally, it adds -ffile-prefix-map which can be used to specify both
mappings with a single option (and, should we need to add more -f*-prefix-map
options in the future, those as well).

Sometimes it is useful to generate pre-processed output to a file and
the dependency information to stdout for further analysis/processing.
For example:
g++ -E -MD -fdirectives-only -o test.ii test.cxx
This will generate the dependency information to test.d (as per the
documentation). While changing this behavior is probably unwise, one
traditional (e.g., supported by -o) way to handle this is to recognize
the special '-' file name as an instruction to write to stdout:
g++ -E -MD -fdirectives-only -o test.ii -MF - test.cxx
Currently this will create a file named '-'. The included patch
changes this behavior to write to stdout.
Note also that Clang has supported this from at least version 3.5.

As proposed at <https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2014-11/msg00014.html>,
this patch enables -fextended-identifiers by default for all standard
versions including this feature (all C++ versions, C99 and above for
C, but not C90 / C94 / gnu89 / preprocessing assembler). It adds a
couple of tests for areas where I previously noted testsuite coverage
for extended identifiers was lacking, removes -fextended-identifiers
from existing tests, adds -g to various such tests to verify that
extended identifiers don't break debug info generation and removes the
test that was only there to verify that the feature was off by
default.
The current state of the feature may not correspond exactly to any
particular checklist from 2004/5 (see bug 9449) of what was wanted
before enabling the feature by default, but I don't think it's any
worse than plenty of other features supported by default before every
corner case is fully functional, and think problems can readily be
fixed incrementally.
The following aspects of extended identifiers could still do with more
work (and should be straightforward):
* C -aux-info (output should use UCNs).
* ObjC -gen-decls (output should use UCNs; associated diagnostics from
the ObjC front end should use extended characters or UCNs as
appropriate to the locale, via using %qE or identifier_to_locale).
* Use DW_AT_use_UTF8 in DWARF-3 debug info for compilation units built
with extended identifiers enabled (or unconditionally).
* cpplib diagnostics (outputting characters or UCNs as appropriate
depending on the locale, as done for identifiers in non-cpplib
diagnostics).
* C++ test for UCN linking with C and extern "C".
* Check GDB support / file issues for support if needed.
* Actual UTF-8 in identifiers (?). (Be careful about not affecting
performance for the normal fast path of lexing identifiers, if
possible.)
The following may be trickier:
* cpplib spelling preservation (required to diagnose macro
redefinition with different spellings of the same identifier in the
definition or argument names; different spellings of the name of the
macro itself are OK, however; also required for correct handling of
multiple stringizing in C++); correct output for -d (UCNs), DWARF
debug info for macros (UCNs), PCH and PCH tests. (Spelling
preservation is the issue that needs fixing to remove references to
corner cases in the documentation of -std=c99 and -std=c11 and in
c99status.html.) The idea would be to add a second pointer to
cpp_identifier that stores the original spelling (whether for
extended identifiers only, or for all identifiers); this does not
enlarge cpp_token because the resulting larger cpp_identifier
structure is no bigger than cpp_string.
* C++ translation of extended characters (including $@` and various
control characters) to UCNs in phase 1 (note diagnostics thus
needed, but not for C++11, for control characters in strings /
character constants as those UCNs invalid); a likely implementation
approach is to do translation when identifiers / strings / character
constants are lexed, together with errors for stray $@` / control
characters in program as not being valid UCNs in identifiers ($ only
if not accepted in identifiers); note that this translation should
not take place inside raw string literals.
Bootstrapped with no regressions on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.

This patch adds -fdebug-cpp option. When used with -E this dumps the
relevant macro map before every single token. This clutters the output
a lot but has proved to be invaluable in tracking some bugs during the
development of the virtual location support.

From-SVN: r180084

This second instalment uses the infrastructure of the previous patch
to allocate a macro map for each macro expansion and assign a virtual
location to each token resulting from the expansion.
To date when cpp_get_token comes across a token that happens to be a
macro, the macro expander kicks in, expands the macro, pushes the
resulting tokens onto a "token context" and returns a dummy padding
token. The next call to cpp_get_token goes look into the token context
for the next token [which is going to result from the previous macro
expansion] and returns it. If the token is a macro, the macro expander
kicks in and you know the story.
This patch piggy-backs on that macro expansion process, so to speak.
First it modifies the macro expander to make it create a macro map for
each macro expansion. It then allocates a virtual location for each
resulting token. Virtual locations of tokens resulting from macro
expansions are then stored on a special kind of context called an
"expanded tokens context". In other words, in an expanded tokens
context, there are tokens resulting from macro expansion and their
associated virtual locations. cpp_get_token_with_location is modified
to return the virtual location of tokens resulting from macro
expansion. Note that once all tokens from an expanded token context have
been consumed and the context and is freed, the memory used to store the
virtual locations of the tokens held in that context is freed as well.
This helps reducing the overall peak memory consumption.
The client code that was getting macro expansion point location from
cpp_get_token_with_location now gets virtual location from it. Those
virtual locations can in turn be resolved into the different
interesting physical locations thanks to the linemap API exposed by
the previous patch.
Expensive progress. Possibly. So this whole virtual location
allocation business is switched off by default. So by default no
extended token is created. No extended token context is created
either. One has to use -ftrack-macro-expansion to switch this on. This
complicates the code but I believe it can be useful as some of our
friends found out at http://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=5610
The patch tries to reduce the memory consumption by freeing some token
context memory that was being reused before. I didn't notice any
compilation slow down due to this immediate freeing on my GNU/Linux
system.
As no client code tries to resolve virtual locations to anything but
what was being done before, no new test case has been added.
