2021-12-14c++: processing_template_decl vs template depth [PR103408]Patrick Palka1-4/+22
We use processing_template_decl in two slightly different ways: as a flag to signal that we're dealing with templated trees, and as a measure of the current syntactic template nesting depth. This overloaded meaning of p_t_d is conceptually confusing and leads to bugs that we end up working around in an ad-hoc fashion. This patch replaces all uses of processing_template_decl that care about its magnitude to instead look at the depth of current_template_parms via a new macro current_template_depth. This allows us to eliminate 3 workarounds in the concepts code: two about non-templated requires-expressions (in constraint.cc) and one about lambdas inside constraints (in cp_parser_requires_clause_expression etc). This also fixes the testcase in PR103408 about auto(x) used inside a non-templated requires-expression. The replacement was mostly mechanical, aside from two issues: * In synthesize_implicit_template_parm, when introducing a new template parameter list for an abbreviated function template, we need to add the new level of current_template_parms sooner, before calling process_template_parm, since this latter function now looks at current_template_depth to determine the level of the new parameter. * In instantiate_class_template_1 after substituting a template friend declaration, we currently increment processing_template_decl around the call to make_friend_class so that the friend_depth computation within this subroutine yields a nonzero value. We could just replace this with an equivalent manipulation of current_template_depth, but this patch instead rewrites the friend_depth calculation within make_friend_class to not depend on p_t_d / c_t_d at all when called from instantiate_class_template_1. 2021-04-29c++: Fix friend attributes [PR51344]Jason Merrill1-8/+1
51344 was a problem with calling save_template_attributes twice for the same friend function: once from do_friend and once from grokmethod. The 2012 patch for the bug avoided creating an infinite loop when this happens, but it's better to avoid the duplication in the first place. This also restores the dependent attributes to the beginning of the attribute list, as originally intended. And then apply_late_template_attributes can avoid copying the non-dependent attributes. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: PR c++/51344 * decl2.c (grokfield): Call cplus_decl_attributes for friend. DECL_FRIEND_P's meaning has changed over time. It now (almost) means the the friend function decl has not been met via an explicit decl. This completes that transition, renaming it to DECL_UNIQUE_FRIEND_P, so one doesn't think it is the sole indicator of friendliness (plenty of friends do not have the flag set). This allows reduction in the complexity of managing the field -- all in duplicate_decls now. gcc/cp/ * cp-tree.h (struct lang_decl_fn): Adjust context comment. (DECL_FRIEND_P): Replace with ... (DECL_UNIQUE_FRIEND_P): ... this. Only for FUNCTION_DECLs. 2020-09-25c++: Adjust pushdecl/duplicate_decls APINathan Sidwell1-4/+4
The decl pushing APIs and duplicate_decls take an 'is_friend' parm, when what they actually mean is 'hide this from name lookup'. That conflation has gotten more anachronistic as time moved on. We now have anticipated builtins, and I plan to have injected extern decls soon. So this patch is mainly a renaming excercise. is_friend -> hiding. duplicate_decls gets an additional 'was_hidden' parm. As I've already said, hiddenness is a property of the symbol table, not the decl. Builtins are now pushed requesting hiding, and pushdecl asserts that we don't attempt to push a thing that should be hidden without asking for it to be hidden. This is the final piece of groundwork to get rid of a bunch of 'this is hidden' markers on decls and move the hiding management entirely into name lookup. gcc/cp/ * cp-tree.h (duplicate_decls): Replace 'is_friend' with 'hiding' and add 'was_hidden'. * name-lookup.h (pushdecl_namespace_level): Replace 'is_friend' with 'hiding'. 2020-09-24c++: Cleanup some decl pushing apisNathan Sidwell1-2/+2
In cleaning up local decl handling, here's an initial patch that takes advantage of C++'s default args for the is_friend parm of pushdecl, duplicate_decls and push_template_decl_real and the scope & tpl_header parms of xref_tag. Then many of the calls simply not mention these. I also rename push_template_decl_real to push_template_decl, deleting the original forwarding function. This'll make my later patches changing their types less intrusive. There are 2 functional changes: 1) push_template_decl requires is_friend to be correct, it doesn't go checking for a friend function (an assert is added). 2) debug_overload prints out Hidden and Using markers for the overload set. gcc/cp/ * cp-tree.h (duplicate_decls): Default is_friend to false. We often emit logically-related groups of diagnostics. A relatively simple case is this: if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); where the "note" diagnostic issued by the "inform" call is guarded by the -Wmultistatement_macros warning. More complicated examples can be seen in the C++ frontend, where e.g. print_z_candidates can lead to numerous "note" diagnostics being emitted. I'm looking at various ways to improve how we handle such related diagnostics, but, prior to this patch, there was no explicit relationship between these diagnostics: the diagnostics subsystem had no way of "knowing" that these were related. This patch introduces a simple way to group the diagnostics: an auto_diagnostic_group class: all diagnostics emitted within the lifetime of an auto_diagnostic_group instance are logically grouped. Hence in the above example, the two diagnostics can be grouped by simply adding an auto_diagnostic_group instance: auto_diagnostic_group d; if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); Some more awkard cases are of the form: if (some_condition && warning_at (...) && more_conditions) inform (...); which thus need restructuring to: if (some_condition) { auto_diagnostic_group d; warning_at (...); if (more_conditions) inform (...); } so that the lifetime of the auto_diagnostic_group groups the warning_at and the inform call. Nesting is handled by simply tracking a nesting depth within the diagnostic_context.: all diagnostics are treated as grouped until the final auto_diagnostic_group is popped. diagnostic.c uses this internally, so that all diagnostics are part of a group - those that are "by themselves" are treated as being part of a group with one element. The diagnostic_context gains optional callbacks for displaying the start of a group (when the first diagnostic is emitted within it), and the end of a group (for when the group was non-empty); these callbacks are unused by default, but a test plugin demonstrates them (and verifies that the machinery is working). As noted above, I'm looking at various ways to use the grouping to improve how we output the diagnostics.
