If -fprofile-update=atomic is used, then the target must provide atomic
operations for the counters of the type returned by get_gcov_type().
This is a 64-bit type for targets which have a 64-bit long long type.
On 32-bit targets this could be an issue since they may not provide
64-bit atomic operations. Allow targets to override the default type
size with the new TARGET_GCOV_TYPE_SIZE target hook.
If a 32-bit gcov type size is used, then there is currently a warning in
libgcov-driver.c in a dead code block due to
sizeof (counter) == sizeof (gcov_unsigned_t):

If the -fprofile-info-section is used, then the gcov information is registered
in a linker set. This is done by build_gcov_info_var_registration(). The
compiler generated object placed in the section was not marked as referenced,
so once optimization was enabled, this object was optimized away. Mark it as
referenced.

Register the profile information in the specified section instead of using a
constructor/destructor. A pointer to the profile information generated by
-fprofile-arcs or -ftest-coverage is placed in the specified section for each
translation unit. This option disables the profile information registration
through a constructor and it disables the profile information processing
through a destructor.
I am not sure how I can test this option. One approach would be to assemble a
test file, then scan it and check that a .gcov_info section is present and no
__gcov_init() and __gcov_exit() calls are present. Is there an example for
this in the test suite?

copying gcda files around [pr93401]
Hi,
in GCC 8 we changed -fprofile-generate=<path> to use mangled absolute paths in
the <path> directory. This was necessary to avoid clashes of files when gcc is
executed from different directories to build different sources of same
filename.
However this made it difficult to build projects on setups where instrumented
build is done in one directory, feedback build in different and possibly
training happens in yet another directory structure. This happens i.e. for
Firefox builds for month or two.
This patch adds -fprofile-prefix-path that can be used to inform gcc where the
root of build directory is and strip it form the gcda filenames.
This is similar to exisitng debug-prefix-map but without the map feature since
it seems useless for profile data.
We spent quite some time with Maritn Liska discussing options and found no
better solution. I was looking how this work on LLVM and they produce single
profdata file which is then transformed into kind of simple database by
llvmprofdata tool. This database keys functions by filename and symbol name.
If you arrane two files with same name define static variable with same symbol
name this gets messedup and result in wrong info. So I think this is not very
good solution and preffer the extra option.
Bootstrapped/regtested x86_64-linux. I plan to commit it later today if there
are no complains.
I suppose our manual could have some central section on profile feedback
explaining the whole setup at one place.

MSG_{OPTIMIZED_LOCATIONS|MISSED_OPTIMIZATION}
As noted at Cauldron, dumpfile.c currently emits "note: " for all kinds
of dump message, so that (after filtering) there's no distinction between
MSG_OPTIMIZED_LOCATIONS vs MSG_NOTE vs MSG_MISSED_OPTIMIZATION in the
textual output.
This patch changes dumpfile.c so that the "note: " varies to show
which MSG_* was used, with the string prefix matching that used for
filtering in -fopt-info, hence e.g.
directive_unroll_3.f90:24:0: optimized: loop unrolled 7 times
and:
pr19210-1.c:24:3: missed: missed loop optimization: niters analysis ends up with assumptions.
The patch adds "dg-optimized" and "dg-missed" directives for use
in the testsuite for matching these (with -fopt-info on stderr; they
don't help for dumpfile output).
The patch also converts the various problem-reporting dump messages
in coverage.c:get_coverage_counts to use MSG_MISSED_OPTIMIZATION
rather than MSG_OPTIMIZED_LOCATIONS, as the docs call out "optimized"
as
"information when an optimization is successfully applied",
whereas "missed" is for
"information about missed optimizations",
and problems with profile data seem to me to fall much more into the
latter category than the former. Doing so requires converting a few
tests from using "-fopt-info" (which is implicitly
"-fopt-info-optimized-optall") to getting the "missed" optimizations.
Changing them to "-fopt-info-missed" added lots of noise from the
vectorizer, so I changed these tests to use "-fopt-info-missed-ipa".
gcc/ChangeLog:
* coverage.c (get_coverage_counts): Convert problem-reporting dump
messages from MSG_OPTIMIZED_LOCATIONS to MSG_MISSED_OPTIMIZATION.
* dumpfile.c (kind_as_string): New function.
(dump_loc): Rather than a hardcoded prefix of "note: ", use

This patch adds a wrapper around smallest_mode_for_size
for cases in which the mode class is MODE_INT. Unlike
(int_)mode_for_size, smallest_mode_for_size always returns
a mode of the specified class, asserting if no such mode exists.
smallest_int_mode_for_size therefore returns a scalar_int_mode
rather than an opt_scalar_int_mode.
