2021-07-30MMIX: remove generic placeholders parameters in call insn patterns.Hans-Peter Nilsson2-43/+33
I guess the best way to describe these operands, at least for MMIX, is "ballast". Some targets seem to drag along one or two of the incoming pattern operands through the rtl passes and not dropping them until assembly output. Let's stop doing that for MMIX. There really are *two* unused parameters: one is a number corresponding to the stack-size of arguments as a const_int and the other is whatever the target yields for targetm.calls.function_arg (args_so_far, function_arg_info::end_marker ()). There's a mandatory second argument to the "call" RTX, but the target doesn't have to keep it a variable number; it can be replaced by (const_int 0) early, like this. Astute readers may object that as the MMIX call-type insns (PUSHJ, PUSHGO) have a parameter in addition to the address of the called function, so should the emitted RTL. But, that parameter depends only on the local function, not the called function (IOW, it's the same for all calls in a function), and its value isn't known until frame layout time. Having it a parameter in the emitted RTL for the call would just be confusing. (Maybe this will be amended later, if/when improving "shrink-wrapping".) gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.md ("call", "call_value", "*call_real") ("*call_value_real"): Don't generate rtx mentioning the generic operands 1 and 2 to "call", and similarly for "call_value". * config/mmix/mmix.c (mmix_print_operand_punct_valid_p) (mmix_print_operand): Use '!' instead of 'p'.
2021-07-30doc: correct documentation of "call" (et al) operand 2.Hans-Peter Nilsson1-9/+3
An old itch being scratched: the documentation lies; it's not "the number of registers used as operands", unless the target makes a special arrangement to that effect, and there's nothing in the guts of gcc setting up or assuming those semantics. Instead, see calls.c:expand_call, variable next_arg_reg. Or just consider the variable name. The text is somewhat transcribed from the head comment of emit_call_1 for parameter next_arg_reg. Most important is to document the relation to function_arg_info::end_marker() and the TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG hook. The "normally" in the head comment, in "normally it is the first arg-register beyond those used for args in this call, or 0 if all the arg-registers are used in this call" means "by default", unless the target tests end_marker_p and does something special, but the port is free to return whatever it likes when it sees the end-marker. And, I do mean "whatever it likes" because if the port doesn't actually mention that operand in the RTX emitted for its "call" or "call_value" patterns ("usually" define_expands), it can be any mumbo-jumbo, such as a VOIDmode register, which seems like it happens for some targets, or NULL, that happens for others. Returning a VOIDmode register until recently included MMIX, where it made it into the emitted RTL, confusing later passes, recently exposed as an ICE. Tested by inspecting the info and generated pdf for sanity. gcc: * doc/md.texi (call): Correct information about operand 2. * config/mmix/mmix.md ("call", "call_value"): Remove fixed FIXMEs.
2021-07-30Fix MMIX breakage; ICE in df_ref_record, at df-scan.c:2598Hans-Peter Nilsson1-3/+10
This bug made me dive into some of the murkier waters of gcc, namely the source of operand 2 to the "call" pattern. It can be pretty poisonous, but is unused (either directly or later) by most targets. The target function_arg (and function_incoming_arg), can unless specially handled, cause a VOIDmode reg RTX to be generated, for the function arguments end-marker. This is then passed on by expand_call to the target "call" pattern, as operand[2] (which is wrongly documented or wrongly implemented, see comment in mmix.c) but unused by most targets that do not handle it specially, as in operand 2 not making it into the insn generated for the "call" (et al) patterns. Of course, the MMIX port stands out here: the RTX makes it into the generated RTX but is then actually unused and is just a placeholder; see mmix_print_operand 'p'. Anyway, df-scan inspects the emitted call rtx and horks on the void-mode RTX (actually: that it represents a zero-sized register range) from r12-1702. While I could replace or remove the emitted unused call insn operand, that would still leave unusable rtx to future users of function_arg actually looking for next_arg_reg. Better replace VOIDmode with DImode here; that's the "natural" mode of MMIX registers. (As a future improvement, I'll also remove the placeholder argument and replace the intended user; the print_operand output modifier 'p' modifier (as in "PUSHJ $%p2,%0") with some punctuation, perhaps '!' (as in "PUSHJ $%!,%0"). I inspected all ports, but other targets emit a special function_arg_info::end_marker cookie or just don't emit "call" operand[2] (etc) in the expanded "call" pattern. gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.c (mmix_function_arg_1): Avoid generating a VOIDmode register for e.g the function_arg_info::end_marker.

2020-08-07mmix: fix gcc.dg/loop-9.c by more accurate move insnsHans-Peter Nilsson1-12/+36
It looks like gcc.dg/loop-9.c kind-of works as sentinel for sane move-instruction generation for a port. Looking at the FAIL: gcc.dg/loop-9.c scan-rtl-dump loop2_invariant "Decided" FAIL: gcc.dg/loop-9.c scan-rtl-dump loop2_invariant "without introducing a new temporary register" it seems the problem is that in the loop: for (i = 0; i < 100; i++) a[i] = 18.4242; the move insn corresponding to "a[i] = 18.4242" happens to be generated as a move of a constant to a memory address, using no registers except for the address (edited): (insn 9 8 10 3 (set (mem:DF (reg:DI 269 [ ivtmp::9 ])) (const_double:DF 1.84241999e+1)) "x/loop-9.c":9:10 6 {movdf}) To wit, at the loop2 pass there's no register-initialization to move out of the loop! The insn above isn't accurate and has to be fixed up at register allocation time to make constraints match. While there are insns to set memory to constant in MMIX, that's limited to 64-bit moves corresponding to the integer bit-patterns for 0..255, and 18.4242 isn't one of them. (Only 0.0 matches; the bit-patterns for 0..255 would IIUC be interpreted as denormal floating-point numbers a.k.a. subnormal numbers and don't seem worthwhile to handle.) The fault is with the port, for not requiring a register for an operand that actually requires an intermediate register, in order to enable pre-register-allocation passes to do their job. The movdf pattern (actually, all MMIX movM), only required the destination to be a non-immediate operand and the source to be a general_operand, i.e. anything-to-anything. Better force the source to be a register, when asked to generate such a move insn. Also, make operands stay sane by using the matching insn condition to require one of the operands to be a register pre-register-allocation (for sake of combine-like passes that cook up "simplified" insns, possibly losing the use of a register). Looking no deeper than at the results of test-runs with different variants, I see that the latter "safety latch" has no effect on the test-results (at 919c9d4bd3db7da0), but it just feels like the right thing to do. Similarly, there's no effect on test-suite results, to do the same not just for movdf but for all moves. gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.md (MM): New mode_iterator. ("mov<mode>"): New expander to expand for all MM-modes. ("*movqi_expanded", "*movhi_expanded", "*movsi_expanded") ("*movsf_expanded", "*movdf_expanded"): Rename from the corresponding mov<M> named pattern. Add to the condition that either operand must be a register_operand. ("*movdi_expanded"): Similar, but also allow STCO in the condition.
2020-07-29config/mmix/mmix.h (NO_FUNCTION_CSE): Define to 1.Hans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+3
The tests gcc.dg/tree-ssa/loop-1.c and gcc.dg/weak/typeof-2.c assume this setting and are as a consequence riddled with exceptions for targets that actually do yield better code when calling through a register rather than repeatedly the same symbol. Nonetheless, defining it makes sense for MMIX. (Even better IMHO, this macro shouldn't exist and instead rtx costs be used or perhaps just a target-specific default of flag_no_function_cse.) gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.h (NO_FUNCTION_CSE): Define to 1.
2020-07-29mmix.h (ASM_OUTPUT_EXTERNAL): Define to default_elf_asm_output_external.Hans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+5
Whoops. When un-disabling visibility support for mmix, I missed that some of the newly enabled tests were FAILs, for not emitting .hidden for references to external declarations. This takes care of gcc.dg/visibility-14.c .. -19.c, and gcc.dg/visibility-23.c. gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.h (ASM_OUTPUT_EXTERNAL): Define to default_elf_asm_output_external.
2020-07-25config/mmix/mmix.c (TARGET_ASM_OUTPUT_IDENT): Override.Hans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+3
Funny that default_asm_output_ident_directive isn't the default... Anyway, since dot-pseudos like .ident are treated as comments by mmixal, there's nothing lost compatibilitywise by supporting it. If mmix-knuth-mmixware had included elfos.h this'd have been the default. There might be enough reason to do that; relocatable objects are ELF but (by default) links to produce mmo. Fixes c-c++-common/ident-1b.c and 2b in C and C++ testing. Committed. gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.c (TARGET_ASM_OUTPUT_IDENT): Override the default with default_asm_output_ident_directive.
2020-07-21mmix: support -fstack-usageHans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+16
MMIX has two stacks; the regular one using register $254 as a convention and the register-stack, pushed and popped by call instructions (usually). The decision to only report the stack usage of the regular stack (and not of the register stack) may be updated, perhaps the sum is better. This initial decision is helped a little bit by the order of passes: the size of the register-stack is calculated only later (in the machine-dependent reorg pass), long after finalization of the stack-usage info (in the prologue/epilogue pass). No regressions for mmix-knuth-mmixware (but a whole lot more PASSes), committed. gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.c (mmix_expand_prologue): Calculate the total allocated size and set current_function_static_stack_size, if flag_stack_usage_info.
2020-07-20mmix: When debug-dump, revert to "standard" pseudos for emitting integersHans-Peter Nilsson1-4/+31
The sole purpose of not providing pseudos and forcing use of TARGET_ASM_INTEGER is to arrange for assembly output that people can, instead of using gas, usefullt feed to mmixal (Knuth's assembler). It uses pseudos with slightly different semantics (BYTE, WYDE, TETRA, OCTA). Nice when it works, but that only happens for limited use-cases and debug-information is excluded. The dwarf2out.c shortcuts, looking up the pseudo-strings and doing the output on its own, has the result that in absence of such integer-emitting pseudos, the target TARGET_ASM_INTEGER hook is called, which by definition outputs a newline, and then the dwarf2out.c code redundantly adds another. That uglifies output and breaks the expectations of the dwarf2 parts of the test-suite. The wart by which an extra newline is emitted is ripe for a cleanup, and I started out thinking I'd add a default argument for emitting a newline to the assemble_integer family of functions, but then reconsidered. I also can't bring myself to use different pseudos with/without -g so instead I check for options for the more detailed dumps, as used by the test-suite to get those DW_* strings in detailed assembly output. This eliminates all FAILs in the dwarf2-specific parts of the gcc test-suite for mmix-knuth-mmixware, with no regressions. Committed. gcc: * config/mmix/mmix.c (mmix_option_override): Reinstate default integer-emitting targetm.asm_out pseudos when dumping detailed assembly-code. (mmix_assemble_integer): Update comment.

2019-09-10Add call_used_or_fixed_reg_pRichard Sandiford1-8/+9
Similarly to the call_used_or_fixed_regs patch, this one replaces tests of call_used_regs[i] with call_used_or_fixed_reg_p (i). The only remaining direct uses of call_used_regs are in reginfo.c and in the conditional register usage hooks. Again, this is purely mechanical. 2019-08-20Use function_arg_info for TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG_ADVANCERichard Sandiford1-6/+6
There seems to be a bit of confusion around this one. Almost all callers pass the same arguments as TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG, meaning that the mode is the promoted mode rather than the type mode. But the calls.c handling for normal typed arguments instead passes the unpromoted TYPE_MODE (despite passing the promoted mode to TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG). I've kept this behaviour with a ??? comment. (The calls.c handling of libgcc functions does pass the promoted mode though, as does the function.c handling of incoming arguments.) Also, a couple of the arm callers don't seem to be using the hook correctly. Again I kept the current choices and added a ??? comment. 2019-08-20 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * target.def (function_arg_advance): Take a function_arg_info instead of a mode, type and named flag. * doc/tm.texi: Regenerate. * targhooks.h (default_function_arg_advance): Take a function_arg_info instead of a mode, type and named flag. * targhooks.c (default_function_arg_advance): Likewise. * calls.c (initialize_argument_information): Update call to targetm.calls.function_arg_advance. This may help backends to avoid implementing custom constant loading code specifically for the MI thunk and reuse existing functionality. gcc/ 2019-05-16 Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com> * cgraphunit.c (cgraph_node::expand_thunk): Remove assemble_start_function and assemble_end_function calls. * config/alpha/alpha.c (alpha_output_mi_thunk_osf): Call assemble_start_function and assemble_end_function. * config/arc/arc.c (arc_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/arm/arm.c (arm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/bfin/bfin.c (bfin_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/c6x/c6x.c (c6x_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/cris/cris.c (cris_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/csky/csky.c (csky_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/epiphany/epiphany.c (epiphany_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/frv/frv.c (frv_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/i386/i386.c (x86_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/ia64/ia64.c (ia64_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/m68k/m68k.c (m68k_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/microblaze/microblaze.c (microblaze_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/mips/mips.c (mips_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/mmix/mmix.c (mmix_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/mn10300/mn10300.c (mn10300_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/nds32/nds32.c (nds32_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/nios2/nios2.c (nios2_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/or1k/or1k.c (or1k_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/pa/pa.c (pa_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/riscv/riscv.c (riscv_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/rs6000/rs6000.c (rs6000_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/s390/s390.c (s390_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/sh/sh.c (sh_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/sparc/sparc.c (sparc_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/spu/spu.c (spu_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/stormy16/stormy16.c (xstormy16_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/tilegx/tilegx.c (tilegx_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/tilepro/tilepro.c (tilepro_asm_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. * config/vax/vax.c (vax_output_mi_thunk): Likewise. 2017-10-23Convert STARTING_FRAME_OFFSET to a hookRichard Sandiford3-7/+7
I took the documentation of the FRAME_GROWS_DOWNWARD behaviour from the version that was in most header files, since the one in the manual seemed less clear. The patch deliberately keeps FIRST_PARM_OFFSET(FNDECL) in microblaze_starting_frame_offset; this seems to be a port-local convention and takes advantage of the fact that FIRST_PARM_OFFSET doesn't read FNDECL. 2017-10-23 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * target.def (starting_frame_offset): New hook. * doc/tm.texi (STARTING_FRAME_OFFSET): Remove in favor of... 2017-09-25Turn CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT into a hookRichard Sandiford3-7/+7
The definition: #define CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT(EXP, ALIGN) \ (TREE_CODE (EXP) == STRING_CST \ && (ALIGN) < BITS_PER_WORD ? BITS_PER_WORD : (ALIGN)) was very common, so the patch adds a canned definition for that, called constant_alignment_word_strings. Some ports had a variation that used a port-local FASTEST_ALIGNMENT instead of BITS_PER_WORD; the patch uses constant_alignment_word_strings if FASTEST_ALIGNMENT was always BITS_PER_WORD and a port-local hook function otherwise. 2017-09-25 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * target.def (constant_alignment): New hook. * defaults.h (CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT): Delete. * doc/tm.texi.in (CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT): Replace with... The SH port had a couple of TRULY_NOOP_TRUNCATION tests that were left over from the old shmedia port. 2017-09-13 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayard <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * target.def (truly_noop_truncation): New hook. SImode will be a scalar_int_mode, SFmode will be a scalar_float_mode, etc. This patch prepares for that change by adding an E_ prefix to the mode enum values. It also adds #defines that map the unprefixed names to the prefixed names; e.g: #define QImode E_QImode Later patches will change this to use things like scalar_int_mode where appropriate. The patch continues to use enum values to initialise static data. This isn't necessary for correctness, but it cuts down on the amount of load-time initialisation and shouldn't have any downsides. The patch also changes things like: cmp_mode == DImode ? DFmode : DImode to: cmp_mode == DImode ? E_DFmode : E_DImode This is because DImode and DFmode will eventually be different classes, so the original ?: wouldn't be well-formed. 2017-08-30 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * genmodes.c (mode_size_inline): Add an E_ prefix to mode names. 2017-08-21Remove the frame size argument from function_prologue/epilogueRichard Sandiford1-6/+4
Later patches will add support for frame sizes that are a run-time invariant but not a compile-time constant. This then raised the question of whether the frame size argument to the function_prologue/ epilogue hooks should be updated accordingly. It turned out that only two targets actually used this argument, and even they got other frame-related information from the cached machine structure. This patch therefore removes the argument and makes the two targets use get_frame_size () instead. 2017-08-21 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * target.def (function_prologue): Remove frame size argument.
