The current rule was too strict and has not been required since Darwin11. This relaxes the constraint to allow up to 2^28 alignment for non-common entities. Common is still restricted to a maximum aligment of 2^15. When the host is an older version of Darwin ( earlier that 11 ) then the existing constraint is still applied. Note that this is a host constraint not a target one (so that a compilation on 10.7 targeting 10.6 is allowed to use a greater alignment than the tools on 10.6 support). This matches the behaviour of clang. So, if we want to make PCH work for PIEs, I'd say we can: 1) add a new GTY option, say callback, which would act like skip for non-PCH and for PCH would make us skip it but remember for address bias translation 2) drop the skip for tree_translation_unit_decl::language 3) change get_unnamed_section to have const char * as last argument instead of const void *, change unnamed_section::data also to const char * and update everything related to that 4) maybe add a host hook whether it is ok to support binaries changing addresses (the only thing I'm worried is if some host that uses function descriptors allocates them dynamically instead of having them somewhere in the executable) 5) maybe add a gengtype warning if it sees in GTY tracked structure a function pointer without that new callback option Here is 1), 2), 3) implemented. Note, on stdc++.h.gch/O2g.gch there are just those 10 relocations without the second patch, with it a few more, but nothing huge. This addresses a long-standing problem where a work-around for an unwinder issue (also a regression) regresses other functionality. The patch replaces several work-arounds with a fix for PR80556 and a work-around for PR88590. * The fix for PR80556 requires a bump to the SO name for libgcc_s, since we need to remove the unwinder symbols from it. This would trigger PR88590 hence the work-around for that. * We weaken the symbols for emulated TLS support so that it is possible for a DSO linked with static-libgcc to interoperate with a DSO linked with libgcc_s. Likewise main exes. * We remove all the gcc-4.2.1 era stubs machinery and workarounds. * libgcc is always now linked ahead of libc, which avoids fails where the libc (libSystem) builtins implementations are not up to date. * The unwinder now always comes from the system - for Darwin9 from /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib - for Darwin10 from /usr/lib/libSystem.dylib - for Darwin11+ from /usr/lib/system/libunwind.dylib. We still insert a shim on Darwin10 to fix an omitted unwind function, but the underlying unwinder remains the system one. * The work-around for PR88590 has two parts (1) we always link libgcc from its convenience lib on affected system versions (avoiding the need to find the DSO path); (2) we add and export the emutls functions from DSOs - this makes a relatively small (20k) addition to a DSO. These can be backed out when a proper fix for PR88590 is committed. For distributions that wish to install a libgcc_s.1.dylib to satisfy linkage from exes that linked against the stubs can use a reexported libgcc_s.1.1 (since that contains all the symbols that were previously exported via the stubs). In fact, the only test that is needed that differs from the default is for the availbaility of sincos. Test that and then fall back to the default implementation. Secondly, the funtion appears to be called from the Jit library before the value of darwin_macosx_version_min has been set up - at present we work around this by guarding the checks on having a non-null pointer for darwin_macosx_version_min. Darwin's dynamic linker supports interposition and lazy symbol binding. If we are generating PIC code and a symbol is public, then it could potentially be indirected via a lazy-resolver stub; we cannot tell at compile-time if this will be done (since the indirection can be the result of adding a -flat-namespace option at link-time). Here we are conservative and assume that any such symbol cannot bind locally. The default implementation for binds_local_p handles undefined, weak and common symbols which are always indirected (for mdynamic-no-pic also). gcc/ChangeLog: PR target/100152 * config/darwin.c (darwin_binds_local_p): Assume that any public symbol might be interposed for PIC code. This address one of the more long-standing and serious regressions for Darwin. GCC emits unwind code by default on the assumption that the unwinder will be (of have the same capability) as the one in the current libgcc_s. For Darwin platforms, this is not the case - some of them are based on the libgcc_s from GCC-4.2.1 and some are using the unwinder provided by libunwind (part of the LLVM project). The latter implementation has gradually adopted a section that deals with GNU unwind. The most serious problem for some of the platform versions is in handling DW_CFA_remember/restore_state pairs. The DWARF description talks about these in terms of saving/restoring register rows; this is what GCC originally did (and is what the unwinders do for the Darwin versions based on libgcc_s). However, in r118068, this was changed so that not only the registers but also the current frame address expression were saved. The unwind code assumes that the unwinder will do this; some of Darwin's unwinders do not, leading to lockups etc. To date, the only solution has been to replace the system libgcc_s with a newer one which is not a viable solution for many end-users (since that means overwritting the one provided with the system installation). The fix here provides a target hook that allows the target to specify that the CFA should be reinstated after a DW_CFA_restore. This fixes the issue (and also the closed WONTFIX of 44107). Much of the existing work in the Darwin BSS and common sections was to accommodate the PowerPC section anchors. We want to segregate this, since it might become desirable to support section anchors for arm64. First revision (here) is to use the same section conventions as the Xcode toochains for BSS and COMMON. GCC has a target hook TARGET_LIBC_HAS_FUNCTION, which tells the compiler which functions it can expect to be present in libc. The default target hook does not include the sincos functions. The nvptx port of newlib does include sincos and sincosf, but not sincosl. There was a workaround in place that allowed for cases where the poly int had only one component. 2020-03-21Darwin: Handle NULL DECL_SIZE_TYPE in machopic_select_section (PR94237).Iain Sandoe1-10/+19
A recent change in the LTO streaming arrangement means that it is now possible for machopic_select_section () to be called with a NULL value for DECL_SIZE_TYPE - corresponding to an incomplete or not-yet- laid out type. When section anchors are present, and we are generating assembler, we normally need to know the object size when choosing the section, since zero-sized objects must be placed in sections that forbid section anchors. In the current circumstance, the objective of the earlier streaming of this data is to allow nm to determine BSS c.f. Data symbols (when used with the LTO plugin). Since Darwin does not yet make use of the plugin this fix is a bit of future-proofing. We now emit the 'generic' section for the decl (absent knowing its size) - which will still be correct in determining the BSS c.f. We applied a conservative, but fairly large, hammer to fix PR71767. However, ideally, we want minimise the number of symbols visible to ld64 and to match the cases emitted by clang (since that's what ld64 is expecting). Now we've improved the handling of indirections, we can make the indirection symbols local when they are in the regular non-lazy symbol pointers section. We will continue to make any indirections in the data section visible (since right now we have no way to track if a given symbol follows a weak global). This change makes no difference to handling of labels for constants (to be revised in a future patch). When we're using the LLVM-based assembler (the default on modern Darwin) the ordering of stubs and non-lazy symbol pointers is important. Interleaving the output (current GCC behaviour) leads to crashes which prevents us from building code with symbol stubs. To resolve this, we order the output of stubs and symbol indirections: 1. Any indirections in the data section 2. Symbol stubs. 3. Non-lazy symbol pointers.
