This commit newly introduces the ability to use overloaded builtins in
C++ SFINAE context.
The goal behind this is in order to ensure there is a single mechanism
that libstdc++ can use to determine whether a given type can be used in
the atomic fetch_add (and similar) builtins. I am working on another
patch that hopes to use this mechanism to identify whether fetch_add
(and similar) work on floating point types.
Current state of the world:
GCC currently exposes resolved versions of these builtins to the
user, so for GCC it's currently possible to use tests similar to the
below to check for atomic loads on a 2 byte sized object.
#if __has_builtin(__atomic_load_2)
Clang does not expose resolved versions of the atomic builtins.
clang currently allows SFINAE on builtins, so that C++ code can
check whether a builtin is available on a given type.
GCC does not (and that is what this patch aims to change).
C libraries like libatomic can check whether a given atomic builtin
can work on a given type by using autoconf to check for a
miscompilation when attempting such a use.
My goal:
I would like to enable floating point fetch_add (and similar) in
GCC, in order to use those overloads in libstdc++ implementation of
atomic<float>::fetch_add.
This should allow compilers targeting GPU's which have floating
point fetch_add instructions to emit optimal code.
In order to do that I need some consistent mechanism that libstdc++
can use to identify whether the fetch_add builtins have floating
point overloads (and for which types these exist).
I would hence like to enable SFINAE on builtins, so that libstdc++
can use that mechanism for the floating point fetch_add builtins.
Implementation follows the existing mechanism for handling SFINAE
contexts in c-common.cc. A boolean is passed into the c-common.cc
function indicating whether these functions should emit errors or not.
This boolean comes from `complain & tf_error` in the C++ frontend.
(Similar to other functions like valid_array_size_p and
c_build_vec_perm_expr).
This is done both for resolve_overloaded_builtin and
check_builtin_function_arguments, both of which can be used in SFINAE
contexts.
I attempted to trigger something using the `reject_gcc_builtin`
function in an SFINAE context. Given the context where this
function is called from the C++ frontend it looks like it may be
possible, but I did not manage to trigger this in template context
by attempting to do something similar to the testcases added around
those calls.
- I would appreciate any feedback on whether this is something that
can happen in a template context, and if so some help writing a
relevant testcase for it.
Both of these functions have target hooks for target specific builtins
that I have updated to take the extra boolean flag. I have not adjusted
the functions implementing those target hooks (except to update the
declarations) so target specific builtins will still error in SFINAE
contexts.
- I could imagine not updating the target hook definition since nothing
would use that change. However I figure that allowing targets to
decide this behaviour would be the right thing to do eventually, and
since this is the target-independent part of the change to do that
this patch should make that change.
Could adjust if others disagree.
Other relevant points that I'd appreciate reviewers check:
- I did not pass this new flag through
atomic_bitint_fetch_using_cas_loop since the _BitInt type is not
available in the C++ frontend and I didn't want if conditions that can
not be executed in the source.
- I only test non-compile-time-constant types with SVE types, since I do
not know of a way to get a VLA into a SFINAE context.
- While writing tests I noticed a few differences with clang in this
area. I don't think they are problematic but am mentioning them for
completeness and to allow others to judge if these are a problem).
- atomic_fetch_add on a boolean is allowed by clang.
- When __atomic_load is passed an invalid memory model (i.e. too
large), we give an SFINAE failure while clang does not.
Bootstrap and regression tested on AArch64 and x86_64.
Built first stage on targets whose target hook declaration needed
updated (though did not regtest etc). Targets triplets I built in order
to check the backend specific changes I made:
- arm-none-linux-gnueabihf
- avr-linux-gnu
- riscv-linux-gnu
- powerpc-linux-gnu
- s390x-linux-gnu

Since diagnostic.h is included in over half of the sources, requiring to `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY`
does not make sense. Instead lets unconditionally include memory in system.h.
The majority of this patch is just removing `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` from the sources which currently
have it.
This should also fix the mingw build issue but I have not tried it.

This patch is similar to r15-5569 (tweak ashift:SI) but for
ashiftrt and lshiftrt codes. It splits constant shift offsets > 16
into a 3-operand byte shift and a 2-operand residual bit shift.
Moreover, some of the constraint alternatives have been promoted
to 3-operand alternatives regardless of options. For example,
ashift:HI and lshiftrt:HI can support 3 operands for offsets 9...12
without any overhead.
Apart from that, it's a bit of code clean up for 2-byte and 4-byte
shift insns: Use one RTL peephole with any_shift code iterator
instead of 3 individual peepholes. It also removes some useless
split insns; presumably introduced during the cc0 -> CCmode work.

This patch improves the 4-byte ASHIFT insns.
1) It adds a "r,r,C15" alternative for improved long << 15.
2) It adds 3-operand alternatives (depending on options) and
splits them after peephole2 / before avr-fuse-move into
a 3-operand byte shift and a 2-operand residual bit shift.
For better control, it introduces new option -msplit-bit-shift
that's activated at -O2 and higher per default. 2) is even
performed with -Os, but not with -Oz.

This introduces a new post reload pass that tracks known values held
in registers and performs optimizations based on that knowledge.
It runs between the two instances of the RTL peephole pass.
The optimizations are activated by new option -mfuse-move=<0,23>
which provides a 3:2:2:2 mixed radix value:
Digit 0: Activates try_fuse:
Tries to use a MOVW instead of two LDIs.
Digit 1: Activates try_bin_arg1:
Simplify the 2nd operand of a binary operation, for example
X xor Y can be simplified to X when Y = 0. When Y is an
expensive constant that's already held in some register R, then
the expression can be replaced by X xor R.
Digit 2: Activates try_split_any:
Split multi-byte operations like shifts into 8-bit instructions.
Digit 3: Activates try_split_ldi:
Decompose LDI-like insns into a sequence of instructions with better
performance. For example, R2[4] = 0x1ff may be performed as:
CLR R5
CLR R4
MOVW R2, R4
INC R3
DEC R2
Digit 3 can have a value of 0, 1 or 2, where value=2 may come up
with code that performs better than with value=1 at the expense of
reduced traceability of the generated assembly code.

This patch avoids (clobber (match_dup)) in insn patterns for tablejump.
The machine description now uses a scratch_operand instead which is
possible since the clobbered entity is known in advance:
3-byte PC : REG_Z
2-byte PC + JMP : REG_Z
2-byte PC + RJMP : None, hence scratch:HI is used.
The avr-casesi pass and optimization has to be adjusted to the new patterns.

For operations like X o= CST, regalloc may spill l-reg X to a d-reg:
D = X
D o= CST
X = D
where it is better to instead
D = CST
X o= D
This patch adds an according RTL peephole.

I've tried to build stage3 with
-Wleading-whitespace=blanks -Wtrailing-whitespace=blank -Wno-error=leading-whitespace=blanks -Wno-error=trailing-whitespace=blank
added to STRICT_WARN and that expectably resulted in about
2744 unique trailing whitespace warnings and 124837 leading whitespace
warnings when excluding *.md files (which obviously is in big part a
generator issue). Others from that are generator related, I think those
need to be solved later.
The following patch just fixes up the easy case (trailing whitespace),
which could be easily automated:
for i in `find . -name \*.h -o -name \*.cc -o -name \*.c | xargs grep -l '[ ]$' | grep -v testsuite/`; do sed -i -e 's/[ ]*$//' $i; done
I've excluded files which I knew are obviously generated or go FE.
Is there anything else we'd want to avoid the changes?
Due to patch size, I've split it between gcc/ part (this patch)
and rest (include/, libiberty/, libgcc/, libcpp/, libstdc++-v3/).

The previous fix for PR116953 is incomplete because references to
recog_data are escaping avr_out_sbxx_branch() in the form of %-operands
in the returned asm code template. This patch reverts the previous fix,
and re-extracts the operands by means of extract_constrain_insn_cached()
after the call of jump_over_one_insn_p().
PR target/116953
gcc/
* config/avr/avr.cc (avr_out_sbxx_branch): Revert previous fix
for PR116953 (r15-4078). Run extract_constrain_insn_cached
on the current insn after calling jump_over_one_insn_p.

My forthcoming patches for PR other/116613 make much more use of
cloning of pretty_printers than before, so it makes sense as a
preliminary patch for the result of pretty_printer::clone to be a
std::unique_ptr, rather than add more manual uses of "delete".
On doing so, I noticed various other places where naked new/delete is
used for run-time configuration of diagnostics:
* the output format (text vs SARIF)
* client data hooks
* the option manager
* the URLifier
Hence this patch also makes use of std::unique_ptr and ::make_unique for
managing such client policy classes, and also for diagnostic_buffer's
per-format implementations.
Unfortunately we can't directly include <memory> in our internal headers
but instead any of our TUs that make use of std::unique_ptr must #define
INCLUDE_MEMORY before including system.h.
Hence the bulk of this patch is taken up with adding a define of
INCLUDE_MEMORY to hundreds of source files: everything that includes
diagnostic.h or pretty-print.h (and thus anything transitively such as
includers of lto-wrapper.h, c-tree.h, cp-tree.h and rtl-ssa.h).
Thanks to Gaius Mulley for the parts of the patch that regenerated the
m2 files.

The >= and < comparisons may skip comparing the lower bytes when
the according bytes of the constant are all zeros. For example,
uint16 >= 0x1200
is true iff
hi8 (uint16) >= hi8 (0x1200)
and similar for uint16 < 0x1200. Some comparisons against constants
that are an integral power of 256 where already handled in the split
preparation. That code has been outsourced to new avr_maybe_cmp_lsr()
which may change the operands such that the resulting insns become
a comparison of the high bytes against 0 plus a EQ / NE branch.
For example,
uint32 >= 0x10000
can be rewritten as
(uint32 >> 16) != 0.
The according asm output is performed by new avr_out_cmp_lsr().

The transparent call insns like "*parityhi2.libgcc" output a single
[R]CALL instruction that can be skipped by the skip instructions.
Such insns have attribute "type" of "xcall" and can therefore
be easily recognized. Same applies when "adjust_len" is "call".
gcc/
* config/avr/avr.cc (avr_2word_insn_p): Return true for
transparent calls: When insn attribute "type" is "xcall"

There are many places where asm output functions have to look at
the constituent bytes and words of the operands. The function of
choice was simplify_gen_subreg (mode, ...) which can be replaced
by the more handy avr_byte (rtx, byte_num).
gcc/
* config/avr/avr.cc: Use functions like avr_byte,
avr_word, avr_[u]int8/16 if convenient.
(avr_uint16): New function.
|
|
16-bit comparisons like R25:24 == -1 are currently performed like
cpi R24, -1
cpc R25, R24
Similar is possible for wider modes. ADIW can be used like SBIW when
the compare code is EQ or NE because such comparisons are just about
(propagating) the Z flag. The patch adds helper functions like avr_byte()
that may be useful in other functions than avr_out_compare().
Use new convenient helper functions that may be useful in
other output functions, too.
For example, with the patch
R24:SI == -1 (unused after)
adiw r26,1
sbci r25,hi8(-1)
sbci r24,lo8(-1)
R18:SI == -1
cpi r18,-1
cpc r19,r18
cpc r20,r18
cpc r21,r18
Without the patch, we had:
R24:SI == -1 (unused after)
cpi r24,-1
sbci r25,-1
sbci r26,-1
sbci r27,-1
R18:SI == -1
cpi r18,-1
ldi r24,-1
cpc r19,r24
cpc r20,r24
cpc r21,r24
gcc/
* config/avr/avr.cc (avr_chunk, avr_byte, avr_word)
(avr_int8, avr_uint8, avr_int16): New helper functions.
(avr_out_compare): Overhaul.
|
|
The order in which multi-byte EQ and NE comparisons are performing
the byte comparisons does not matter, and there are situations where
using SBIW on the high word can save an instruction.
gcc/
* config/avr/avr.cc (avr_out_compare): Tweak 32-bit EQ and NE
comparisons that can use SBIW for the hi16 part.
