At the same time, adding -Wtrivial-auto-var-init and update documentation.
-Wtrivial-auto-var-init and update documentation.
for the following testing case:
1 int g(int *);
2 int f1()
3 {
4 switch (0) {
5 int x;
6 default:
7 return g(&x);
8 }
9 }
compiling with -O -ftrivial-auto-var-init causes spurious warning:
warning: statement will never be executed [-Wswitch-unreachable]
5 | int x;
| ^
This is due to the compiler-generated initialization at the point of
the declaration.
We could avoid the warning to exclude the following cases:
when
flag_auto_var_init > AUTO_INIT_UNINITIALIZED
And
1) call to .DEFERRED_INIT
2) call to __builtin_clear_padding if the 2nd argument is present and non-zero
3) a gimple assign store right after the .DEFERRED_INIT call that has the LHS
as RHS
However, we still need to warn users about the incapability of the option
-ftrivial-auto-var-init by adding a new warning option -Wtrivial-auto-var-init
to report cases when it cannot initialize the auto variable. At the same
time, update documentation for -ftrivial-auto-var-init to connect it with
the new warning option -Wtrivial-auto-var-init, and add documentation
for -Wtrivial-auto-var-init.

Here is an incremental patch to the first two patches of the series
that implements EnumBitSet that fully restores the -fsanitize-coverage
GCC 11 behavior.
2022-01-24 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com>
PR sanitizer/104158
* opt-functions.awk (var_set): Handle EnumBitSet property.
* optc-gen.awk: Don't disallow RejectNegative if EnumBitSet is
specified.
* opts.h (enum cl_enum_var_value): New type.
* opts-common.cc (decode_cmdline_option): Use CLEV_* values.
Handle CLEV_BITSET.
(cmdline_handle_error): Handle CLEV_BITSET.
* opts.cc (test_enum_sets): Also test EnumBitSet requirements.
* doc/options.texi (EnumBitSet): Document.
* common.opt (fsanitize-coverage=): Use EnumBitSet instead of
EnumSet.
(trace-pc, trace-cmp): Drop Set properties.
* gcc.dg/sancov/pr104158-7.c: Adjust for repeating of arguments
being allowed.

This is incremental patch to fix up -fsanitize-coverage= option
handling, allow -fno-sanitize-coverage= again, allow both
options together in one option or make
-fsanitize-coverage=trace-pc -fsanitize-coverage=trace-cmp
actually enable both suboptions rather than the last one.

This patch adds support for an -Oz command line option, aggressively
optimizing for size at the expense of performance. GCC's current -Os
provides a reasonable balance of size and performance, whereas -Oz is
probably only useful for code size benchmarks such as CSiBE. Or so I
thought until I read in https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25408853
that clang's -Oz sometimes outperforms -O[23s]; I suspect modern instruction
decode stages can treat "pushq $1; popq %rax" as a short uop encoding.
Instead of introducing a new global variable, this patch simply abuses
the existing optimize_size by setting its value to 2. The only change
in behaviour is the tweak to the i386 backend implementing the suggestion
in PR target/32803 to use a short push/pop sequence for loading small
immediate values (-128..127) on x86, matching the behaviour of LLVM.
On x86_64, the simple function:
int foo() { return 25; }
currently generates with -Os:
foo: movl $25, %eax // 5 bytes
ret
With the proposed -Oz, it generates:
foo: pushq $25 // 2 bytes
popq %rax // 1 byte
ret
On CSiBE, this results in a 0.94% improvement (3703513 bytes total
down to 3668516 bytes).

C++14 changed the definition of 'aggregate' to allow default member
initializers, but such classes still need to be considered "non-POD for the
purpose of layout" for ABI compatibility with C++11 code. It seems rare to
derive from such a class, as evidenced by how long this bug has
survived (since r216750 in 2014), but it's certainly worth fixing.
We only warn when we were failing to allocate another field into the
tail padding of the newly aggregate class; this is the only ABI impact.
This also changes end_of_class to consider all data members, not just empty
data members; that used to be an additional flag, removed in r9-5710, but I
don't see any reason not to always include them. This makes the result of
the function correspond to the ABI nvsize term and its nameless counterpart
that does include virtual bases.
When looking closely at other users of end_of_class, I realized that we were
assuming that the latter corresponded to the ABI dsize term, but it doesn't
if the class ends with an empty virtual base (in the rare case that the
empty base can't be assigned offset 0), and this matters for layout of
[[no_unique_address]]. So I added another mode that returns the desired
value for that case. I'm not adding a warning for this ABI fix because it's
a C++20 feature.

In the gdc driver, this takes the previous fix for the Darwin D
bootstrap, and extends it to the -static-libphobos option as well.
Rather than pushing the -static-libphobos option back onto the command
line, the setting of SKIPOPT is instead conditionally removed. The same
change has been repeated for -static-libstdc++ so there is now no need
to call generate_option to re-add it.

It is desirable for -Wattributes to warn about e.g.
[[deprecate]] void g(); // typo, should warn
However, -Wattributes also warns about vendor-specific attributes
(that's because lookup_scoped_attribute_spec -> find_attribute_namespace
finds nothing), which, with -Werror, causes grief. We don't want the
-Wattributes warning for
[[company::attr]] void f();
GCC warns because it doesn't know the "company" namespace; it only knows
the "gnu" and "omp" namespaces. We could entirely disable warning about
attributes in unknown scopes but then the compiler would also miss typos
like
[[company::attrx]] void f();
or
[[gmu::warn_used_result]] int write();
so that is not a viable solution. A workaround is to use a #pragma:
#pragma GCC diagnostic push
#pragma GCC diagnostic ignored "-Wattributes"
[[company::attr]] void f() {}
#pragma GCC diagnostic pop
but that's a mouthful and awkward to use and could also hide typos. In
fact, any macro-based solution doesn't seem like a way forward.
This patch implements -Wno-attributes=, which takes these arguments:
company::attr
company::
This option should go well with using @file: the user could have a file
containing
-Wno-attributes=vendor::attr1,vendor::attr2
and then invoke gcc with '@attrs' or similar.
I've also added a new pragma which has the same effect:
The pragma along with the new option should help with various static
analysis tools.

This patch adds support to GCC's diagnostic subsystem for escaping certain
bytes and Unicode characters when quoting source code.
Specifically, this patch adds a new flag rich_location::m_escape_on_output
which is a hint from a diagnostic that non-ASCII bytes in the pertinent
lines of the user's source code should be escaped when printed.
The patch sets this for the following diagnostics:
- when complaining about stray bytes in the program (when these
are non-printable)
- when complaining about "null character(s) ignored");
- for -Wnormalized= (and generate source ranges for such warnings)
The escaping is controlled by a new option:
-fdiagnostics-escape-format=[unicode|bytes]
For example, consider a diagnostic involing a source line containing the
string "before" followed by the Unicode character U+03C0 ("GREEK SMALL
LETTER PI", with UTF-8 encoding 0xCF 0x80) followed by the byte 0xBF
(a stray UTF-8 trailing byte), followed by the string "after", where the
diagnostic highlights the U+03C0 character.
By default, this line will be printed verbatim to the user when
reporting a diagnostic at it, as:
beforeπXafter
^
(using X for the stray byte to avoid putting invalid UTF-8 in this
commit message)
If the diagnostic sets the "escape" flag, it will be printed as:
before<U+03C0><BF>after
^~~~~~~~
with -fdiagnostics-escape-format=unicode (the default), or as:
before<CF><80><BF>after
^~~~~~~~
if the user supplies -fdiagnostics-escape-format=bytes.
This only affects how the source is printed; it does not affect
how column numbers that are printed (as per -fdiagnostics-column-unit=
and -fdiagnostics-column-origin=).

This patch introduces optional passes to harden conditionals used in
branches, and in computing boolean expressions, by adding redundant
tests of the reversed conditions, and trapping in case of unexpected
results. Though in abstract machines the redundant tests should never
fail, CPUs may be led to misbehave under certain kinds of attacks,
such as of power deprivation, and these tests reduce the likelihood of
going too far down an unexpected execution path.

Initialize automatic variables with either a pattern or with zeroes to increase
the security and predictability of a program by preventing uninitialized memory
disclosure and use.
GCC still considers an automatic variable that doesn't have an explicit
initializer as uninitialized, -Wuninitialized will still report warning messages
on such automatic variables.
With this option, GCC will also initialize any padding of automatic variables
that have structure or union types to zeroes.
You can control this behavior for a specific variable by using the variable
attribute "uninitialized" to control runtime overhead.

Since Tom's PR64707 commit r220037 (Git commit

"Make fopenacc an LTO option", we're now actually passing
'-fopenacc'/'-fopenmp' to the 'mkoffload's, which will pass these on to the

This adds the -fmove-loop-stores option, mainly as a way to disable
the store-motion part of GIMPLE invariant motion (-ftree-loop-im)
which is enabled by default. It might be sensible to turn off
-fmove-loop-stores at -O1 since it can result in compile-time
as well as memory usage issues but this patch tries to preserve
existing behavior besides introducing the new option with the
exception of -Og where I've disabled it.
Controlling store-motion has been made easy by earlier refactoring
for the invariant motion only use after loop interchange.

As -foffload={options,targets,targets=options} is very convoluted,
it has been split into -foffload=targets (supporting the old syntax
for backward compatibilty) and -foffload-options={options,target=options}.
Only the new syntax is documented.
Additionally, -foffload=default is supported, which can reset the
devices after -foffload=disable / -foffload=targets to the default,
if needed.

The following patch makes the choice between 32-bit and 64-bit DWARF formats
selectable by command line switch, rather than being hardcoded through
DWARF_OFFSET_SIZE macro.
The options themselves don't turn on debug info themselves, so one needs
to use -g -gdwarf64 or similar.

These flags can't be used at the same time as any of the other
sanitizers.
We add an equivalent flag to -static-libasan in -static-libhwasan to
ensure static linking.
The -fsanitize=kernel-hwaddress option is for compiling targeting the
kernel. This flag has defaults to match the LLVM implementation and
sets some other behaviors to work in the kernel (e.g. accounting for
the fact that the stack pointer will have 0xff in the top byte and to not
call the userspace library initialisation routines).
The defaults are that we do not sanitize variables on the stack and
always recover from a detected bug.
Since we are introducing a few more conflicts between sanitizer flags we
refactor the checking for such conflicts to use a helper function which
makes checking for such conflicts more easy and consistent.
We introduce a backend hook `targetm.memtag.can_tag_addresses` that
indicates to the mid-end whether a target has a feature like AArch64 TBI
where the top byte of an address is ignored.
Without this feature hwasan sanitization is not done.

Currently we have three vector cost models: cheap, dynamic and
unlimited. -O2 -ftree-vectorize uses “cheap” by default, but that's
still relatively aggressive about peeling and aliasing checks,
and can lead to significant code size growth.
This patch adds an even more conservative choice, which for lack of
imagination I've called “very cheap”. It only allows vectorisation
if the vector code entirely replaces the scalar code. It also
requires one iteration of the vector loop to pay for itself,
regardless of how often the loop iterates. (If the vector loop
needs multiple iterations to be beneficial then things are
probably too close to call, and the conservative thing would
be to stick with the scalar code.)
The idea is that this should be suitable for -O2, although the patch
doesn't change any defaults itself.
I tested this by building and running a bunch of workloads for SVE,
with three options:
(1) -O2
(2) -O2 -ftree-vectorize -fvect-cost-model=very-cheap
(3) -O2 -ftree-vectorize [-fvect-cost-model=cheap]
All three builds used the default -msve-vector-bits=scalable and
ran with the minimum vector length of 128 bits, which should give
a worst-case bound for the performance impact.
The workloads included a mixture of microbenchmarks and full
applications. Because it's quite an eclectic mix, there's not
much point giving exact figures. The aim was more to get a general
impression.
Code size growth with (2) was much lower than with (3). Only a
handful of tests increased by more than 5%, and all of them were
microbenchmarks.
In terms of performance, (2) was significantly faster than (1)
on microbenchmarks (as expected) but also on some full apps.
Again, performance only regressed on a handful of tests.
As expected, the performance of (3) vs. (1) and (3) vs. (2) is more
of a mixed bag. There are several significant improvements with (3)
over (2), but also some (smaller) regressions. That seems to be in
line with -O2 -ftree-vectorize being a kind of -O2.5.
The patch reorders vect_cost_model so that values are in order
of increasing aggressiveness, which makes it possible to use
range checks. The value 0 still represents “unlimited”,
so “if (flag_vect_cost_model)” is still a meaningful check.

Register the profile information in the specified section instead of using a
constructor/destructor. A pointer to the profile information generated by
-fprofile-arcs or -ftest-coverage is placed in the specified section for each
translation unit. This option disables the profile information registration
through a constructor and it disables the profile information processing
through a destructor.
I am not sure how I can test this option. One approach would be to assemble a
test file, then scan it and check that a .gcov_info section is present and no
__gcov_init() and __gcov_exit() calls are present. Is there an example for
this in the test suite?

This patch changes the mangling of __alignof__ to v111__alignof__,
making its mangling distinct from that of alignof(type) and
alignof(expr).
How we mangle ALIGNOF_EXPR now depends on its ALIGNOF_EXPR_STD_P flag,
which after the previous patch gets consistently set for alignof(type)
