My recent attempts to come up with a testcase for my patch to evaluate ss_plus in simplify-rtx.c, identified a missed optimization opportunity (that's potentially a long-time regression): The RTL optimizers no longer place constants in the constant pool. The motivating x86_64 example is the simple program: typedef char v8qi __attribute__ ((vector_size (8))); v8qi foo() { v8qi tx = { 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 }; v8qi ty = { 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 }; v8qi t = __builtin_ia32_paddsb(tx, ty); return t; } which (with my previous patch) currently results in: foo: movq .LC0(%rip), %xmm0 movq .LC1(%rip), %xmm1 paddsb %xmm1, %xmm0 ret even though the RTL contains the result in a REG_EQUAL note: (insn 7 6 12 2 (set (reg:V8QI 83) (ss_plus:V8QI (reg:V8QI 84) (reg:V8QI 85))) "ssaddqi3.c":7:12 1419 {*mmx_ssaddv8qi3} (expr_list:REG_DEAD (reg:V8QI 85) (expr_list:REG_DEAD (reg:V8QI 84) (expr_list:REG_EQUAL (const_vector:V8QI [ (const_int 3 [0x3]) (const_int 0 [0]) repeated x7 ]) (nil))))) Together with the patch below, GCC will now generate the much more sensible: foo: movq .LC2(%rip), %xmm0 ret My first approach was to look in cse.c (where the REG_EQUAL note gets added) and notice that the constant pool handling functionality has been unreachable for a while. A quick search for constant_pool_entries_cost shows that it's initialized to zero, but never set to a non-zero value, meaning that force_const_mem is never called. This functionality used to work way back in 2003, but has been lost over time: https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2003-October/116435.html The changes to cse.c below restore this functionality (placing suitable constants in the constant pool) with two significant refinements; (i) it only attempts to do this if the function already uses a constant pool (thanks to the availability of crtl->uses_constant_pool since 2003). (ii) it allows different constants (i.e. modes) to have different costs, so that floating point "doubles" and 64-bit, 128-bit, 256-bit and 512-bit vectors don't all have the share the same cost. Back in 2003, the assumption was that everything in a constant pool had the same cost, hence the global variable constant_pool_entries_cost. Although this is a useful CSE fix, it turns out that it doesn't cure my motivating problem above. CSE only considers a single instruction, so determines that it's cheaper to perform the ss_plus (COSTS_N_INSNS(1)) than read the result from the constant pool (COSTS_N_INSNS(2)). It's only when the other reads from the constant pool are also eliminated, that this transformation is a win. Hence a better place to perform this transformation is in combine, where after failing to "recog" the load of a suitable constant, it can retry after calling force_const_mem. This achieves the desired transformation and allows the backend insn_cost call-back to control whether or not using the constant pool is preferrable. Alas, it's rare to change code generation without affecting something in GCC's testsuite. On x86_64-pc-linux-gnu there were two families of new failures (and I'd predict similar benign fallout on other platforms). One failure was gcc.target/i386/387-12.c (aka PR target/26915), where the test is missing an explicit -m32 flag. On i686, it's very reasonable to materialize -1.0 using "fld1; fchs", but on x86_64-pc-linux-gnu we currently generate the awkward: testm1: fld1 fchs fstpl -8(%rsp) movsd -8(%rsp), %xmm0 ret which combine now very reasonably simplifies to just: testm1: movsd .LC3(%rip), %xmm0 ret The other class of x86_64-pc-linux-gnu failure was from materialization of vector constants using vpbroadcast (e.g. gcc.target/i386/pr90773-17.c) where the decision is finely balanced; the load of an integer register with an immediate constant, followed by a vpbroadcast is deemed to be COSTS_N_INSNS(2), whereas a load from the constant pool is also reported as COSTS_N_INSNS(2). This is a duplication of volatile loads introduced during GCC 9 development by the 2->2 mechanism of the RTL combiner. There is already a substantial checking for volatile references in can_combine_p but it implicitly assumes that the combination reduces the number of instructions, which is of course not the case here. As recently remarked by Jeff Law, SUBREGs are the "forever chemicals" of GCC's RTL; once created they persist in the environment. The problem, according to the comment on lines 5428-5438 of combine.c is that non-tieable SUBREGs interfere with reload/register allocation, so combine often doesn't touch/clean-up instructions containing a SUBREG. This is the first and simplest of two patches to tackle that problem, by teaching combine to avoid converting explicit TRUNCATEs into SUBREGs that it can't handle. Consider the following (hypothetical) sequence of instructions on a STORE_FLAG_VALUE=1 target, which stores a zero or one in an SI register, then uselessly truncates to QImode, then extends it again. Add a new RTL simplification for the case of a VEC_SELECT selecting the low part of a vector. The simplification returns a SUBREG. The primary goal of this patch is to enable better combinations of Neon RTL patterns - specifically allowing generation of 'write-to- high-half' narrowing intructions. This removes CC0 and all directly related infrastructure. CC_STATUS, CC_STATUS_MDEP, CC_STATUS_MDEP_INIT, and NOTICE_UPDATE_CC are deleted and poisoned. CC0 is only deleted (some targets use that name for something else). HAVE_cc0 is automatically generated, and we no longer will do that after this patch. CC_STATUS_INIT is suggested in final.c to also be useful for ports that are not CC0, and at least arm seems to use it for something. This patch fixes a regression introduced by the rtl-ssa patches. It was seen on HPPA but it might be latent elsewhere. The problem is that the traditional way of expanding an untyped_call is to emit sequences like: (call (mem (symbol_ref "foo"))) (set (reg pseudo1) (reg result1)) ... (set (reg pseudon) (reg resultn)) The ABI specifies that result1..resultn are clobbered by the call but nothing in the RTL indicates that result1..resultn are the results of the call. Normally, using a clobbered value gives undefined results, but in this case the results are well-defined and matter for correctness. This seems like a niche case, so I think it would be better to mark it explicitly rather than try to detect it heuristically. Note that in expand_builtin_apply we already have an rtx_insn *, so it doesn't matter whether we call emit_call_insn or emit_insn. Calling emit_insn seems more natural now that the gen_* call has been split out. 2021-04-13combine: Fix up expand_compound_operation [PR99905]Jakub Jelinek1-5/+9
The following testcase is miscompiled on x86_64-linux. expand_compound_operation is called on (zero_extract:DI (mem/c:TI (reg/f:DI 16 argp) [3 i+0 S16 A128]) (const_int 16 [0x10]) (const_int 63 [0x3f])) so mode is DImode, inner_mode is TImode, pos 63, len 16 and modewidth 64. A couple of lines above the problematic spot we have: if (modewidth >= pos + len) { tem = gen_lowpart (mode, XEXP (x, 0)); where the code uses gen_lowpart and then shift left/right to extract it in mode. But the guarding condition is false - 64 >= 63 + 16 and so we enter the next condition, where the code shifts XEXP (x, 0) right by pos and then adds AND. It does so incorrectly though. Given the modewidth < pos + len, inner_mode must be necessarily larger than mode and XEXP (x, 0) has the innermode, but it was calling simplify_shift_const with mode rather than inner_mode, which meant inconsistent arguments to simplify_shift_const and in this case made a DImode MEM shift out of it. Here is an alternate patch for the PR99830 bug. As discussed on IRC and in the PR, the reason why a (clobber:TI (const_int 0)) has been propagated into the debug insns is that it got optimized away during simplification from the i3 instruction pattern. And that happened because simplify_and_const_int_1 (SImode, varop, 255) with varop of (ashift:SI (subreg:SI (and:TI (clobber:TI (const_int 0 [0])) (const_int 255 [0xff])) 0) (const_int 16 [0x10])) was called and through nonzero_bits determined that (whatever << 16) & 255 is const0_rtx. This change fixes a bug in the AArch64 backend. Currently, we accept an odd sign_extract representation of addresses, but don't accept that same odd form of address as an LEA. This is the cause of PR96998. In the testcase given in the PR, combine produces: (insn 9 8 10 3 (set (mem:SI (plus:DI (sign_extract:DI (mult:DI (subreg:DI (reg/v:SI 92 [ g ]) 0) (const_int 4 [0x4])) (const_int 34 [0x22]) (const_int 0 [0])) (reg/f:DI 96)) [3 *i_5+0 S4 A32]) (asm_operands:SI ("") ("=Q") 0 [] [] [] test.c:11)) "test.c":11:5 -1 (expr_list:REG_DEAD (reg/v:SI 92 [ g ]) (nil))) Then LRA reloads the address and we ICE because we fail to recognize the sign_extract outside the mem: (insn 33 8 34 3 (set (reg:DI 100) (sign_extract:DI (ashift:DI (subreg:DI (reg/v:SI 92 [ g ]) 0) (const_int 2 [0x2])) (const_int 34 [0x22]) (const_int 0 [0]))) "test.c":11:5 -1 (nil)) The aarch64 changes here remove the support for this sign_extract representation of addresses, fixing PR96998. Now this by itself would regress code quality, so this change is paired with an improvement to combine which prevents an extract rtx from being emitted in this case: we now write the rtx above as a shift of an extend, which allows the combination to go ahead. Prior to this, combine.c:make_extraction() identified where we can emit an ashift of an extend in place of an extraction, but failed to make the corresponding canonicalization/simplification when presented with a mult by a power of two. Such a representation is canonical when representing a left-shifted address inside a mem. This change remedies this situation. For rtxes such as: (mult:DI (subreg:DI (reg:SI r) 0) (const_int 2^n)) where the bottom 32 + n bits are valid (the higher-order bits are undefined) and make_extraction() is being asked to sign_extract the lower (valid) bits, after the patch, we rewrite this as: (mult:DI (sign_extend:DI (reg:SI r)) (const_int 2^n)) instead of using a sign_extract. gcc/ChangeLog: PR target/96998 * combine.c (make_extraction): Also handle shifts written as (mult x 2^n), avoid creating an extract rtx for these. * config/aarch64/aarch64.c (aarch64_is_extend_from_extract): Delete. Since we now only call is_just_move on the original instructions, we always have an rtx_insn* (not just a pattern), so we can use single_set on it. 2020-02-25combine: Fix find_split_point handling of constant store into ZERO_EXTRACT ↵Jakub Jelinek1-3/+2
[PR93908] git is miscompiled on s390x-linux with -O2 -march=zEC12 -mtune=z13. I've managed to reduce it into the following testcase. The problem is that during combine we see the s->k = -1; bitfield store and change the SET_SRC from a pseudo into a constant: (set (zero_extract:DI (mem/j:HI (plus:DI (reg/v/f:DI 60 [ s ]) (const_int 10 [0xa])) [0 +0 S2 A16]) (const_int 2 [0x2]) (const_int 7 [0x7])) (const_int -1 [0xffffffffffffffff])) This on s390x with the above option isn't recognized as valid instruction, so find_split_point decides to handle it as IOR or IOR/AND. src is -1, mask is 3 and pos is 7. src != mask (this is also incorrect, we want to set all (both) bits in the bitfield), so we go for IOR/AND, but instead of trying mem = (mem & ~0x180) | ((-1 << 7) & 0x180) we actually try mem = (mem & ~0x180) | (-1 << 7) and that is further simplified into: mem = mem | (-1 << 7) aka mem = mem | 0xff80 which doesn't set just the 2-bit bitfield, but also many other bitfields that shouldn't be touched. We really should do: mem = mem | 0x180 instead. The problem is that we assume that no bits but those low len (2 here) will be set in the SET_SRC, but there is nothing that can prevent that, we just should ignore the other bits. Or, but probably GCC11 material, if we decide that ROTATE/ROTATERT doesn't have out of bounds counts or introduce targetm.rotate_truncation_mask, we should truncate the argument instead of punting. This addresses PR 91860 which has four testcases triggering internal errors. The problem here is that in combine when handling debug insns, we are trying to substitute (sign_extend:DI (const_int 8160 [0x1fe0])) as the value for (reg:DI 78 [ _9 ]) in the debug insn (debug_insn 29 28 30 2 (var_location:QI d (subreg:QI (reg:DI 78 [ _9 ]) 0)) "tmp4.c":11:5 -1 (nil)) This eventually triggers an abort because 8160 is not a sign-extended QImode value. In subst there is already code check for a CONST_INT inside a ZERO_EXTEND and simplify it. The AArch64 SVE tlsdesc patterns were the main motivating reason for clobber_high. It's no longer needed now that the patterns use calls instead. At the time, one of the possible future uses for clobber_high was for asm statements. However, the current code wouldn't handle that case without modification, so I think we might as well remove it for now. There shouldn't be many cases in which a useful hard register is live across a call before RA, so we might as well keep things simple and invalidate partially-clobbered registers here, in case the values they hold leak into the call-clobbered part. I have a series of patches that (as a side effect) makes all rtl passes use the information collected by -fipa-ra. This showed up a latent bug in the liveness tracking in regrename.c, which doesn't take CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE into account when processing clobbers. This actually seems to be quite a common problem with passes that use note_stores; only a handful remember to walk CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE too. I think it was just luck that I saw it with regrename first. This patch tries to make things more robust by passing an insn rather than a pattern to note_stores. The old function is still available as note_pattern_stores for the few places that need it. When updating callers, I've erred on the side of using note_stores rather than note_pattern_stores, because IMO note_stores should be the default choice and we should only use note_pattern_stores if there's a specific reason. Specifically: * For cselib.c, "body" may be a COND_EXEC_CODE instead of the main insn pattern. * For ira.c, I wasn't sure whether extending no_equiv to CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE really made sense, since we don't do that for normal call-clobbered registers. Same for mark_not_eliminable in reload1.c * Some other places only have a pattern available, and since those places wouldn't benefit from walking CALL_INSN_FUNCTION_USAGE, it seemed better to alter the code as little as possible. * In the config/ changes, quite a few callers have already weeded out CALL insns. It still seemed better to use note_stores rather than prematurely optimise. (note_stores should tail call to note_pattern_stores once it sees that the insn isn't a call.) Two fixes for UB when handling very large offsets. The calculation in force_int_to_mode would have been correct if signed integers used modulo arithmetic, so just switch to unsigned types. The code that checks if an auto-increment from i0 or i1 is not lost is a bit shaky. The code to check the same for i2 is non-existent, and cannot be implemented in a similar way at all. So, this patch counts all auto-increments, and makes sure we end up with the same number as we started with. This works because we still have a check that we will not duplicate any. We should do this some better way, but not while we are in stage 4. PR rtl-optimization/89794 * combine.c (count_auto_inc): New function. (try_combine): Count how many auto_inc expressions there were in the original instructions. Ensure we have the same number in the new instructions. PR target/88861 reports an ICE in "ce2" due to an unreachable basic block. The block becomes unreachable in "combine" when delete_noop_moves deletes an insn with a REG_EH_REGION, deleting the EH edge, the only edge leading to the basic block. Normally, rest_of_handle_combine would call cleanup_cfg, deleting unreachable blocks, if combine_instructions returns true, and combine_instructions does return true for some cases of edge-removal, but it doesn't for this case, leading to the ICE. This patch updates delete_noop_moves so that it returns true if it deletes any edges, and passes that through to combine_instructions, so that it too will return true if any edges were deleted, ensuring that cleanup_cfg will be called by rest_of_handle_combine for this case, deleting the now-unreachable block, and fixing the ICE. gcc/ChangeLog: PR target/88861 * combine.c (delete_noop_moves): Convert to "bool" return, returning true if any edges are eliminated.
