We have the following two hooks into the call expansion code:
- TARGET_CALL_ARGS is called for each argument before arguments
are moved into hard registers.
- TARGET_END_CALL_ARGS is called after the end of the call
sequence (specifically, after any return value has been
moved to a pseudo).
This patch adds a TARGET_START_CALL_ARGS hook that is called before
the TARGET_CALL_ARGS sequence. This means that TARGET_START_CALL_REGS
and TARGET_END_CALL_REGS bracket the region in which argument registers
might be live. They also bracket a region in which the only call
emiitted by target-independent code is the call to the target function
itself. (For example, TARGET_START_CALL_ARGS happens after any use of
memcpy to copy arguments, and TARGET_END_CALL_ARGS happens before any
use of memcpy to copy the result.)
Also, the patch adds the cumulative argument structure as an argument
to the hooks, so that the target can use it to record and retrieve
information about the call as a whole.
The TARGET_CALL_ARGS docs said:
While generating RTL for a function call, this target hook is invoked once
for each argument passed to the function, either a register returned by
``TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG`` or a memory location. It is called just
- before the point where argument registers are stored.
The last bit was true for normal calls, but for libcalls the hook was
invoked earlier, before stack arguments have been copied. I don't think
this caused a practical difference for nvptx (the only port to use the
hooks) since I wouldn't expect any libcalls to take stack parameters.

Epilogues for sibling calls are generated using the
sibcall_epilogue pattern. One disadvantage of this approach
is that the target doesn't know which call the epilogue is for,
even though the code that generates the pattern has the call
to hand.
Although call instructions are currently rtxes, and so could be
passed as an operand to the pattern, the main point of introducing
rtx_insn was to move towards separating the rtx and insn types
(a good thing IMO). There also isn't an existing practice of
passing genuine instructions (as opposed to labels) to
instruction patterns.
This patch therefore adds a hook that can be defined as an
alternative to sibcall_epilogue. The advantage is that it
can be passed the call; the disadvantage is that it can't
use .md conveniences like generating instructions from
textual patterns (although most epilogues are too complex
to benefit much from that anyway).

This patch introduces an optional hardening pass to catch unexpected
execution flows. Functions are transformed so that basic blocks set a
bit in an automatic array, and (non-exceptional) function exit edges
check that the bits in the array represent an expected execution path
in the CFG.
Functions with multiple exit edges, or with too many blocks, call an
out-of-line checker builtin implemented in libgcc. For simpler
functions, the verification is performed in-line.
-fharden-control-flow-redundancy enables the pass for eligible
functions, --param hardcfr-max-blocks sets a block count limit for
functions to be eligible, and --param hardcfr-max-inline-blocks
tunes the "too many blocks" limit for in-line verification.
-fhardcfr-skip-leaf makes leaf functions non-eligible.
Additional -fhardcfr-check-* options are added to enable checking at
exception escape points, before potential sibcalls, hereby dubbed
returning calls, and before noreturn calls and exception raises. A
notable case is the distinction between noreturn calls expected to
throw and those expected to terminate or loop forever: the default
setting for -fhardcfr-check-noreturn-calls, no-xthrow, performs
checking before the latter, but the former only gets checking in the
exception handler. GCC can only tell between them by explicit marking
noreturn functions expected to raise with the newly-introduced
expected_throw attribute, and corresponding ECF_XTHROW flag.

poly_int was written before the switch to C++11 and so couldn't
use explicit default constructors. This led to an awkward split
between poly_int_pod and poly_int. poly_int simply inherited from
poly_int_pod and added constructors, with the argumentless constructor
having an empty body. But inheritance meant that poly_int had to
repeat the assignment operators from poly_int_pod (again, no C++11,
so no "using" to inherit base-class implementations).
All that goes away if we switch to using default constructors.
The main complication is ensuring that braced initialisation still
gives a constexpr, so that static variables can be initialised without
runtime code. The two problems here are:
(1) When initialising a poly_int<N, wide_int> with fewer than N
coefficients, the other coefficients need to be a zero of
the same precision as the explicit coefficients. This was
previously done in a for loop using wi::ints_for<...>::zero,
but C++11 constexpr constructors can't have function bodies.
The patch instead uses a series of delegated initialisers to
fill in the implicit coefficients.
(2) The initialisation in:
void f(int x) {
unsigned int foo {x};
}
produces the warning:
warning: narrowing conversion of 'x' from 'int' to 'unsigned int' [-Wnarrowing]
whereas:
void f(int x) {
unsigned int foo = x;
}
does not. So switching to direct initialisation of the coeffs array
would mean that:
poly_uin64_t x = 0;
would trigger a warning for using 0 rather than 0u. That seemed
overly pedantic, so the patch adds explicit casts to the constructor.
The complication is to do that without adding extra code to
wide-int versions. The patch uses a new init_cast type for that.

When instrumentation is requested via -fsanitize-coverage=trace-pc, GCC
emits calls of __sanitizer_cov_trace_pc callback in each basic block.
This callback is supposed to be implemented by the user, and should be
able to identify the containing basic block by inspecting its return
address. Tailcalling the callback prevents that, so disallow it.

DCE now chokes on indirect setjmp calls becoming direct because
that exposes them too late to be subject to abnormal edge creation.
The following patch honors gimple_call_ctrl_altering for those and
_not_ treat formerly indirect calls to setjmp as calls to setjmp
in notice_special_calls.
Unfortunately there's no way to have an indirect call to setjmp
properly annotated (the returns_twice attribute is ignored on types).
RTL expansion late discovers returns-twice for the purpose of
adding REG_SETJMP notes and also sets ->calls_setjmp
(instead of asserting it is set). There's no good way to
transfer proper knowledge around here so I'm using ->calls_setjmp
as a flag to indicate whether gimple_call_ctrl_altering_p was set.

The problem is mismatch between the caller and callee side.
On the callee side, we do:

argument is named or not. Now, cfun->stdarg is determined from the stdarg_p
call, which for the new C2X TYPE_NO_NAMED_ARGS_STDARG_P function types
(rettype fn (...)) returns true. Such functions have no named arguments,
so data->arg.named will be 0 in function.cc. But on the caller side,
as TYPE_NO_NAMED_ARGS_STDARG_P function types have TYPE_ARG_TYPES NULL,
we instead treat those calls as unprototyped even when they are prototyped
- /* If we know nothing, treat all args as named. */ n_named_args = num_actuals;
in 2 spots. We need to treat the TYPE_NO_NAMED_ARGS_STDARG_P cases as
prototyped with no named arguments.

When lowering COMPLEX_EXPR we currently emit two VEC_EXTRACTs. One for the
lowpart and one for the highpart.
The problem with this is that in RTL the lvalue of the RTX is the only thing
tying the two instructions together.
This means that e.g. combine is unable to try to combine the two instructions
for setting the lowpart and highpart.
For ISAs that have bit extract instructions we can eliminate one of the extracts
if, and only if we're setting the entire complex number.
This change changes the expand code when we're setting the entire complex number
to generate a subreg for the lowpart instead of a vec_extract.
This allows us to optimize sequences such as:

Sorry for the long delay getting back to this, but after deeper
investigation, it turns out that Jeff Law's tingling spider senses
that the original patch wasn't updating everywhere that was required
were spot on. Although my nvptx testing showed no problems with -O2,
compiling the same tests with -O0 found several additional assertion
ICEs (exactly where he'd predicted they'd be).
Here's a revised patch that updates five locations (up from the
previous two). Finding any remaining locations (if any) might be
easier once folks are able to test things on their targets. This
also implements Jeff's suggestion to factor the common code into
helper routines.

This patch fixes both ICE regressions PR middle-end/105853 and
PR target/105856 caused by my recent patch to expand small const structs
as immediate constants. That patch updated code generation in three
places: two in expr.cc that call store_constructor directly, and the
third in calls.cc's load_register_parameters that expands its CONSTRUCTOR
via expand_expr, as store_constructor is local/static to expr.cc, and
the "public" API, should usually simply forward the constructor to the
appropriate store_constructor function.
Alas, despite the clean regression testing on multiple targets, the above
ICEs show that expand_expr isn't a suitable proxy for store_constructor,
and things that (I'd assumed) shouldn't affect how/whether a struct is
placed in a register [such as whether the struct is considered packed/
aligned or not] actually interfere with the optimization that is being
attempted.
The (proposed) solution is to export store_constructor (and it's helper
function int_expr_size) from expr.cc, by removing their static qualifier
and prototyping both functions in expr.h, so they can be called directly
from load_register_parameters in calls.cc. This cures both ICEs, but
almost as importantly improves code generation over GCC 12.
For PR 105853, GCC 12 generates:

The following makes the main gimple_build API take a
gimple_stmt_iterator, whether to insert before or after and
an iterator update argument to make it more convenient to use
in certain situations (see the tree-vect-generic.cc hunks for
an example). It also makes the case we insert into the IL
somewhat distinct from inserting into a standalone sequence in
that it simplifies built expressions the same way as inserting
and calling fold_stmt (..., follow_all_ssa_edges) would. When
inserting into a standalone sequence we restrict simplification
to defs within the currently building sequence.
The patch only amends the tree_code gimple_build API, I will
followup with converting the rest as well. The patch got larger
than intended because the template forwarders now use gsi_last
which introduces a dependency on gimple-iterator.h requiring
mass #include re-org across the tree. There are two frontend
specific files including gimple-fold.h just for some padding
clearing stuff - I've removed the include and instead moved
the declarations to fold-const.h (but not the implementations).
Otherwise I'd have to include half of the middle-end headers in
those files which I didn't much like.

My recent testcase for PR c++/84964.C stress tests the middle-end by
attempting to pass a UINT_MAX sized structure on the stack. Although
my fix to PR84964 avoids the ICE after sorry on x86_64 and similar
targets, a related issue still exists on powerpc64 (and similar
ACCUMULATE_OUTGOING_ARGS/ARGS_GROW_DOWNWARD targets) which don't
issue a "sorry, unimplemented" message, but instead ICE elsewhere.
After attempting several alternate fixes, the simplest solution is
to just defensively check in mark_stack_region_used that the upper
bound of the region lies within the allocated stack_usage_map
array, which is of size highest_outgoing_arg_in_use. When this isn't
the case, the code now follows the same path as for variable sized
regions, and uses stack_usage_watermark rather than a map.

As can be seen on PR104989, just setting ECF_NORETURN after sorry is quite
risky and leads to other ICEs. The problem is that ECF_NORETURN calls
better should be at the end of basic blocks that don't have any fallthru
successor edges, otherwise we can ICE later.
This patch instead sets sibcall_failure if in pass == 0 (sibcall_failure
means that the tail call sequence is not useful/not desirable and throws
it away) and otherwise sets a new bool variable that will let us pass
the assertion and also throws away the whole call sequence, I think that is
best for error recovery.

anti_adjust_stack for alignment pad if needed [PR104558]
The following testcase ICEs on x86_64 when asked to use the pre-GCC 8
ABI where zero sized arguments weren't ignored.
In GCC 7 the emit_push_insn calls in store_one_arg were unconditional,
it is true that they didn't actually push anything because it had zero
size, but because arg->locate.alignment_pad is 8 in this case,
emit_push_insn at the end performs
if (alignment_pad && args_addr == 0)
anti_adjust_stack (alignment_pad);
and an assert larger on is upset if we don't do it.
The following patch keeps the emit_push_insn conditional but calls
the anti_adjust_stack when needed by hand for the zero sized arguments.
For the new x86_64 ABI where zero sized arguments are ignored
arg->locate.alignment_pad is 0 in this case, so nothing changes
- we in that case really do ignore it.
There is another emit_push_insn call earlier in store_one_arg, also made
conditional on non-zero size by Marek in GCC 8, but that one is for
arguments with non-BLKmode and the only way those can be zero size is
if they are TYPE_EMPTY_P aka when they are completely ignored. But
I believe arg->locate.alignment_pad should be 0 in that case, so IMHO
there is no need to do anything in the second spot.
