This patch generalizes diagnostic_context so that rather than having
a single output format, it has a vector of zero or more.
It adds new two options:
-fdiagnostics-add-output=DIAGNOSTICS-OUTPUT-SPEC
-fdiagnostics-set-output=DIAGNOSTICS-OUTPUT-SPEC
which both take a new configuration syntax of the form SCHEME ("text" or
"sarif"), optionally followed by ":" and one or more KEY=VALUE pairs,
in this form:
<SCHEME>
<SCHEME>:<KEY>=<VALUE>
<SCHEME>:<KEY>=<VALUE>,<KEY2>=<VALUE2>
...etc
where each SCHEME supports some set of keys. For example, it's now
possible to use:
-fdiagnostics-add-output=sarif:version=2.1,file=foo.2.1.sarif \
-fdiagnostics-add-output=sarif:version=2.2-prerelease,file=foo.2.2.sarif
to add a pair of outputs, each writing to a different file, using
versions 2.1 and 2.2 of the SARIF standard respectively, whilst also
emitting the classic text form of the diagnostics to stderr.
I hope the new syntax gives us room to potentially add new kinds of
output sink in the future (e.g. RPC notifications), and to add new
key/value pairs as needed by the different sinks.
Implementation-wise, the diagnostic_context's m_printer which previously
was used directly by the single output format now becomes a "reference
printer", created by the client (such as the frontend), with defaults
modified by command-line options. Each of the multiple output sinks has
its own pretty_printer instance, created by cloning the context's
reference printer.

My forthcoming patches for PR other/116613 make much more use of
cloning of pretty_printers than before, so it makes sense as a
preliminary patch for the result of pretty_printer::clone to be a
std::unique_ptr, rather than add more manual uses of "delete".
On doing so, I noticed various other places where naked new/delete is
used for run-time configuration of diagnostics:
* the output format (text vs SARIF)
* client data hooks
* the option manager
* the URLifier
Hence this patch also makes use of std::unique_ptr and ::make_unique for
managing such client policy classes, and also for diagnostic_buffer's
per-format implementations.
Unfortunately we can't directly include <memory> in our internal headers
but instead any of our TUs that make use of std::unique_ptr must #define
INCLUDE_MEMORY before including system.h.
Hence the bulk of this patch is taken up with adding a define of
INCLUDE_MEMORY to hundreds of source files: everything that includes
diagnostic.h or pretty-print.h (and thus anything transitively such as
includers of lto-wrapper.h, c-tree.h, cp-tree.h and rtl-ssa.h).
Thanks to Gaius Mulley for the parts of the patch that regenerated the
m2 files.

Rename diagnostic_context's "printer" field to "m_printer",
for consistency with other fields, and to highlight places
where we currently use this, to help assess feasibility
of supporting multiple output sinks (PR other/116613).
No functional change intended.

The following patch rewrites the internals of pp_format.
A pretty_printer's output_buffer maintains a stack of chunk_info
instances, each one responsible for handling a call to pp_format, where
having a stack allows us to support re-entrant calls to pp_format on the
same pretty_printer.
Previously a chunk_info merely stored buffers of accumulated text
per unformatted run and per formatted argument.
This led to various special-casing for handling:
- urlifiers, needing class quoting_info to handle awkard cases where
the run of quoted text could be split between stages 1 and 2
of formatting
- dumpfiles, where the optinfo machinery could lead to objects being
stashed during formatting for later replay to JSON optimization
records
- in the C++ frontend, the format codes %H and %I can't be processed
until we've seen both, leading to awkward code to manipulate the
text buffers
Further, supporting URLs in messages in SARIF output (PR other/116419)
would add additional manipulations of text buffers, since our internal
pp_begin_url API gives the URL at the beginning of the wrapped text,
whereas SARIF's format for embedded URLs has the URL *after* the wrapped
text. Also when handling "%@" we wouldn't necessarily know the URL of
an event ID until later, requiring further nasty special-case
manipulation of text buffers.
This patch rewrites pretty-print formatting by introducing a new
intermediate representation during formatting: pp_token and
pp_token_list. Rather than simply accumulating a buffer of "char" in
the chunk_obstack during formatting, we now also accumulate a
pp_token_list, a doubly-linked list of pp_token, which can be:
- text buffers
- begin/end colorization
- begin/end quote
- begin/end URL
- "custom data" tokens
Working at the level of tokens rather than just text buffers allows the
various awkward special cases above to be replaced with uniform logic.
For example, all "urlification" is now done in phase 3 of formatting,
in one place, by looking for [..., BEGIN_QUOTE, TEXT, END_QUOTE, ...]
and injecting BEGIN_URL and END_URL wrapper tokens when the urlifier
has a URL for TEXT. Doing so greatly simplifies the urlifier code,
allowing the removal of class quoting_info.
The tokens and token lists are allocated on the chunk_obstack, and so
there's no additional heap activity required, with the memory reclaimed
when the chunk_obstack is freed after phase 3 of formatting.
New kinds of pp_token can be added as needed to support output formats.
For example, the followup patch adds a token for "%@" for events IDs, to
better support SARIF output.
No functional change intended.

Since r6-4582-g8a64515099e645 (which added class rich_location), ranges
of quoted source code have been colorized using the following rules:
- the primary range used the same color of the kind of the diagnostic
i.e. "error" vs "warning" etc (defaulting to bold red and bold magenta
respectively)
- secondary ranges alternate between "range1" and "range2" (defaulting
to green and blue respectively)
This works for cases with large numbers of highlighted ranges, but is
suboptimal for common cases.
The following patch adds a pair of color names: "highlight-a" and
"highlight-b", and uses them whenever it makes sense to highlight and
contrast two different things in the source code (e.g. a type mismatch).
These are used by diagnostic-show-locus.cc for highlighting quoted
source. In addition the patch adds colorization to fragments within the
corresponding diagnostic messages themselves, using consistent
colorization between the message and the quoted source code for the two
different things being contrasted.
For example, consider:
demo.c: In function ‘test_bad_format_string_args’:
../../src/demo.c:25:18: warning: format ‘%i’ expects argument of
type ‘int’, but argument 2 has type ‘const char *’ [-Wformat=]
25 | printf("hello %i", msg);
| ~^ ~~~
| | |
| int const char *
| %s
Previously, the types within the message in quotes would be in bold but
not colorized, and the labelled ranges of quoted source code would use
bold magenta for the "int" and non-bold green for the "const char *".
With this patch:
- the "%i" and "int" in the message and the "int" in the quoted source
are all colored bold green
- the "const char *" in the message and in the quoted source are both
colored bold blue
so that the consistent use of contrasting color draws the reader's eyes
to the relationships between the diagnostic message and the source.
I've tried this with gnome-terminal with many themes, including a
variety of light versus dark backgrounds, solarized versus non-solarized
themes, etc, and it was readable in all.
My initial version of the patch used the existing %r and %R facilities
within pretty-print.cc for the messages, but this turned out to be very
uncomfortable, leading to error-prone format strings such as:
error_at (richloc,
"invalid operands to binary %s (have %<%r%T%R%> and %<%r%T%R%>)",
opname,
"highlight-a", type0,
"highlight-b", type1);
To avoid requiring monstrosities such as the above, the patch adds a new
"%e" format code to pretty-print.cc, which expects a pp_element *, where
pp_element is a new abstract base class (actually a pp_markup::element),
along with various useful subclasses. This lets the above be written
as:
pp_markup::element_quoted_type element_0 (type0, highlight_colors::lhs);
pp_markup::element_quoted_type element_1 (type1, highlight_colors::rhs);
error_at (richloc,
"invalid operands to binary %s (have %e and %e)",
opname, &element_0, &element_1);
which I feel is maintainable and clear to translators; the use of %e and
pp_element * captures the type-unsafe part of the variadic call, and the
subclasses allow for type-safety (so e.g. an element_quoted_type expects
a type and a highlighting color). This approach allows for some nice
simplifications within c-format.cc.
The patch also extends -Wformat to "teach" it about the new %e and
pp_element *. Doing so requires c-format.cc to be able to determine
if a T * is a pp_element * (i.e. if T is a subclass). To do so I added
a new comp_types callback for comparing types, where the C++ frontend
supplies a suitable implementation (and %e will always be wrong for C).
I've manually tested this on many diagnostics with both C and C++ and it
seems a subtle but significant improvement in readability.
I've added a new option -fno-diagnostics-show-highlight-colors in case
people prefer the old behavior.

Previously, we set the aliasing set of structures with variable size
struct foo { int x[n]; char b; };
to zero. The reason is that such types can be compatible to diffrent
structure types which are incompatible.
struct foo { int x[2]; char b; };
struct foo { int x[3]; char b; };
But it is not enough to set the aliasing set to zero, because derived
types would then still end up in different equivalence classes even
though they might be compatible. Instead those types should be set
to structural equivalency. We also add checking assertions that
ensure that TYPE_CANONICAL is set correctly for all tagged types.

structure or unions with variable size.

Aliasing of enumeral types with the underlying integer is now allowed
by setting the aliasing set to zero. But this does not allow aliasing
of derived types which are compatible as required by ISO C. Instead,
initially set structural equality. Then set TYPE_CANONICAL and update
pointers and main variants when the type is completed (as done for
structures and unions in C23).

PR bootstrap/115167 reports a bootstrap failure on AIX triggered by
r15-636-g770657d02c986c whilst building f951 in stage 2, due to
the linker not being able to find symbols for:
vtable for range_label_for_type_mismatch
range_label_for_type_mismatch::get_text(unsigned int) const
The only users of the class range_label_for_type_mismatch are in the
C/C++ frontends, each of which supply their own implementation of:
range_label_for_type_mismatch::get_text(unsigned int) const
i.e. we had a cluster of symbols that was disconnnected from any
users on f951.
The above patch added a new range_label::get_effects vfunc to the
base class. My hunch is that we were getting away with not defining
the symbol for Fortran with AIX's linker before (since none of the
users are used), but adding the get_effects vfunc has somehow broken
things (possibly because there's an empty implementation in the base
class in the *header*).
The following patch moves all of the code in
gcc/gcc-rich-location.[cc,h,o} defining and using
range_label_for_type_mismatch to a new
gcc/c-family/c-type-mismatch.{cc,h,o}, to help the linker ignore this
cluster of symbols when it's disconnected from users.
I was able to reproduce the failure without the patch, and then
successfully bootstrap with this patch on powerpc-ibm-aix7.3.1.0
(cfarm119).

DWARF5 added DW_AT_export_symbols both for use on inline namespaces (where
we emit it), but also on anonymous unions/structs (and we didn't emit that

Tell the backend which types are equivalent by setting
TYPE_CANONICAL to one struct in the set of equivalent
structs. Structs are considered equivalent by ignoring
all sizes of arrays nested in types below field level.
The following two structs are incompatible and lvalues
with these types can be assumed not to alias:
struct foo { int a[3]; };
struct foo { int a[4]; };
The following two structs are also incompatible, but
will get the same TYPE_CANONICAL and it is then not
exploited that lvalues with those types can not alias:
struct bar { int (*p)[3]; };
struct bar { int (*p)[4]; };
The reason is that both are compatible to
struct bar { int (*p)[]; };
and therefore are in the same equivalence class. For
the same reason all enums with the same underyling type
are in the same equivalence class. Tests are added
for the expected aliasing behavior with optimization.

This patch implements clang's __has_feature and __has_extension in GCC.
Currently the patch aims to implement all documented features (and some
undocumented ones) following the documentation at
https://clang.llvm.org/docs/LanguageExtensions.html with the exception
of the legacy features for C++ type traits. These are omitted, since as
the clang documentation notes, __has_builtin is the correct "modern" way
to query for these (which GCC already implements).

Some variably modified types were not detected correctly.
Define C_TYPE_VARIABLY_MODIFIED via TYPE_LANG_FLAG 6 in the CFE.
This flag records whether a type is variably modified and is
set for all such types including arrays with variably modified
element type or structures and unions with variably modified
members. This is then used to detect such types in the C FE
and middle-end (via the existing language hook).

Here we crash because a CAST_EXPR, representing T(), doesn't have
its operand, and operand_equal_p's STRIP_ANY_LOCATION_WRAPPER doesn't
expect that. (o_e_p is called from warn_duplicated_cond_add_or_warn.)
In the past we've adjusted o_e_p to better cope with template codes,
but in this case I think we just want to avoid attempting to warn
about inst-dependent expressions; I don't think I've ever envisioned
-Wduplicated-cond to warn about them. Also destroy the chain when
an inst-dependent expression is encountered to not warn in
Wduplicated-cond4.C.
The ICE started with r12-6022, two-stage name lookup for overloaded
operators, which gave dependent operators a TREE_TYPE (in particular,
DEPENDENT_OPERATOR_TYPE), so we no longer bail out here in o_e_p:
/* Similar, if either does not have a type (like a template id),
they aren't equal. */
if (!TREE_TYPE (arg0) || !TREE_TYPE (arg1))
return false;

C2x adds support for enums with a fixed underlying type specified
("enum e : long long;" and similar). Implement this in the C front
end. The same representation is used for these types as in C++, with
two macros moved from cp-tree.h to c-common.h.
Such enums can have bool as the underlying type, and various C
front-end code checking for boolean types is adjusted to use a new
C_BOOLEAN_TYPE_P to handle such enums the same way as bool. (Note
that for C++ we have bug 96496 that enums with underlying type bool
don't work correctly there.)
There are various issues with the wording for such enums in the
current C2x working draft (including but not limited to wording in the
accepted paper that failed to make it into the working draft), which I
intend to raise in NB comments. I think what I've implemented and
added tests for matches the intent.
Bootstrapped with no regressions for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.

Attribute format takes three arguments: archetype, string-index, and
first-to-check. The last two specify the position in the function
parameter list. r63030 clarified that "Since non-static C++ methods have
an implicit this argument, the arguments of such methods should be counted
from two, not one, when giving values for string-index and first-to-check."
Therefore one has to write
struct D {
D(const char *, ...) __attribute__((format(printf, 2, 3)));
};
However -- and this is the problem in this PR -- ctors with virtual
bases also get two additional parameters: the in-charge parameter and
the VTT parameter (added in maybe_retrofit_in_chrg). In fact we'll end up
with two clones of the ctor: an in-charge and a not-in-charge version (see
build_cdtor_clones). That means that the argument position the user
specified in the attribute argument will refer to different arguments,
depending on which constructor we're currently dealing with. This can
cause a range of problems: wrong errors, confusing warnings, or crashes.
This patch corrects that; for C we don't have to do anything, and in C++
we can use num_artificial_parms_for. It would be wrong to rewrite the
attributes the user supplied, so I've changed POS to be passed by
reference so that we don't have to change all the call sites of
positional_argument and we still get the default_conversion adjustment.
Attribute format_arg is not affected, because it requires that the
function returns "const char *" which will never be the case for cdtors.
