libcpp's label_text class wraps a text buffer, along with a flag to determine if it "owns" the buffer. 2019-10-14[C] Avoid exposing internal details in aka typesRichard Sandiford1-39/+91
The current aka diagnostics can sometimes leak internal details that seem more likely to be distracting than useful. E.g. on aarch64: void f (va_list *va) { *va = 1; } gives: incompatible types when assigning to type ‘va_list’ {aka ‘__va_list’} from type ‘int’ where __va_list isn't something the user is expected to know about. A similar thing happens for C++ on the arm_neon.h-based: float x; int8x8_t y = x; which gives: cannot convert ‘float’ to ‘int8x8_t’ {aka ‘__Int8x8_t’} in initialization This is accurate -- and __Int8x8_t is defined by the AArch64 PCS -- but it's not going to be meaningful to most users. This patch stops the aka code looking through typedefs if all of the following are true: (1) the typedef is built into the compiler or comes from a system header (2) the target of the typedef is anonymous or has a name in the implementation namespace (3) the target type is a tag type or vector type, which have in common that: (a) we print their type names if they have one (b) what we print for anonymous types isn't all that useful ("struct <anonymous>" etc. for tag types, pseudo-C "__vector(N) T" for vector types) The patch does this by recursively looking for the aka type, like the C++ frontend already does. This in turn makes "aka" work for distinct type copies like __Int8x8_t on aarch64, fixing the ??? in aarch64/diag_aka_1.c. 2019-10-14 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/c-family/ * c-common.h (user_facing_original_type_p): Declare. * c-common.c: Include c-spellcheck.h. diag-aka-1.c tests that: struct T { int i; } T; void *a; T *t = a; produces: request for implicit conversion from 'void *' to 'T *' {aka 'struct T *'} ... But printing an aka for the tag seems a bit redundant when the tag name is the same as the typedef name. It's probably not going to be telling the user anything they don't already know, and can be distracting if "T" rather than "struct T" is the preferred choice for an exported interface. This is even more true if the tag is anonymous; e.g.: struct { int i; } T; void *a; T *t = a; gives: request for implicit conversion from 'void *' to 'T *' {aka 'struct <anonymous> *'} Rather than just drop the test above, the patch instead tests for: struct T { int i; } *T; where seeing the tag definitely helps. 2019-10-01 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/c/ * c-objc-common.c (useful_aka_type_p): New function. This patch tweaks maybe_add_include_fixit so that if we're emitting a note about adding the header file, the note's primary location will be replaced by that of the fix-it hint, to avoid repeating a location we've already emitted (or one close to it). This patch adds the ability to label source ranges within a rich_location, to be printed by diagnostic_show_locus. I implemented it wherever accurate location information was guaranteed (there are other places that could benefit, but we need better location information in those places). The labels can be disabled via -fno-diagnostics-show-labels. Similarly: param-type-mismatch.C: In function 'int test_1(int, int, float)': param-type-mismatch.C:11:27: error: invalid conversion from 'int' to 'const char*' [-fpermissive] 11 | return callee_1 (first, second, third); | ^~~~~~ | | | int param-type-mismatch.C:7:43: note: initializing argument 2 of 'int callee_1(int, const char*, float)' 7 | extern int callee_1 (int one, const char *two, float three); | ~~~~~~~~~~~~^~~ where the first "error" describing the bad argument gets a label describing the type inline (since it's non-obvious from "second"). The "note" describing the type of the param of the callee *doesn't* get a label, since that information is explicit there in the source ("const char *two"). The idea is that in any diagnostic where two aspects of the source aren't in sync it ought to be easier for the user if we directly show them the mismatching aspects inline (e.g. types). As well as type mismatch errors, perhaps labels could also be used for buffer overflow warnings, for describing the capacity of the destination buffer vs the size of what's being written: sprintf (buf, "filename: %s\n", file); ^~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~^~~ | | capacity: 32 10 + strlen(file) + 2 or somesuch. I believe that this was a vestige from experiments I did to support strippng dg directives from the output; it was present in the earliest version of multiline.exp I posted: "[RFC, stage1] Richer source location information for gcc 6 (location ranges etc)" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2015-03/msg00837.html and I believe was neved used. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-format.c: Include "selftest-diagnostic.h" and "gcc-rich-location.h". PR 62170 describes a problem with how the quoting in pp_format interacts with the "aka" information for typedefs in %qT for the C family of frontends, and also now for %qH and %qI in the C++ frontend: we print: 'Py_ssize_t* {aka int*}' ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ colorized as "quote" i.e. '[START_COLOR]Py_ssize_t* {aka int*}[END_COLOR]' when we should print: 'Py_ssize_t*' {aka 'int*'} ^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ colorized as "quote" i.e. '[START_COLOR]Py_ssize_t*[END_COLOR]' {aka '[START_COLOR]int*[END_COLOR]'} where the opening and closing quote characters and colorization are added by the 'q' handling within pp_format. This patch fixes the quoting by updating the %T handling in C and C++ and the %H/%I handling in C++ to insert the quoting appropriately. It converts the "quote" param of the pp_format_decoder callback from bool to bool *, allowing for the %T and %H/%I handlers to write false back to it, to avoid printing the closing quote for the cases like the above where the trailing closing quote isn't needed. It introduces pp_begin_quote/pp_end_quote to simplify this. These take a "bool show_color", rather than using "pp_show_color (pp)" since cxx_pp's pp_show_color isn't currently initialized (since cxx_initialize_diagnostics happens before diagnostic_color_init). gcc/c/ChangeLog: PR c++/62170 * c-objc-common.c (c_tree_printer): Convert penultimate param from bool to bool *. In cp/error.c, I separate the initialization of the diagnostic context from the initialization of the scratch pretty-printer (cxx_pp). This was suggested by Gabriel in the last review of the patch and now I realize it was a good idea. Now cxx_initialize_diagnostics is the equivalent version of c_initialize_diagnostics. To avoid having to make extern a bunch of functions, I moved it from cp-objcp-common.c to error.c. I moved the setting of diagnostic_format_decoder (global_dc) = c_tree_printer, from c_objc_common_init to c_initialize_diagnostics, and right after c_common_diagnostics_set_defaults. This mimics what is done in cxx_initialize_diagnostics. Moreover, in both c_initialize_diagnostics and cxx_initialize_diagnostics, the FE-specific pretty-printer is initialized first and then other settings are applied. This does not make a difference right now, but if in the future one wishes to touch something in the pretty-printer, it will not get overriden immediately. In fact, the code I removed in c_common_initialize_diagnostics, which sets line_cutoff to 80, is useless because the pretty-printer created here is actually never used, but overriden by the FE-specific pretty-printers. This also means that doc/invoke.texi was wrong. Finally, it is useless to set the maximum line length to 0 in the constructor of cxx_pretty_printer.
