2024-04-23Further spelling fixes in translatable stringsJakub Jelinek1-1/+1
This addresses the non-Oxford British English vs. US English spelling nits in translatable strings. I see various similar cases in m2 and rust FEs where they don't make it into gcc.pot, guess those would be nice to get fixed too. 2024-04-23 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> * config/darwin.opt (init): Spelling fix: initialiser -> initializer. gcc/c-family/ * c-attribs.cc (handle_objc_nullability_attribute): Spelling fix: recognised -> recognized. gcc/m2/ * lang.opt (fdef=, fmod=): Spelling fix: recognise -> recognize.
2024-01-09c-family: copy attribute diagnostic fixes [PR113262]Jakub Jelinek1-18/+14
The copy attributes is allowed on decls as well as types and even has checks whether decl (set to *node) is DECL_P or TYPE_P, but for diagnostics unconditionally uses DECL_SOURCE_LOCATION (decl), which obviously only works if it applies to a decl. 2024-01-09 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR c/113262 * c-attribs.cc (handle_copy_attribute): Don't use DECL_SOURCE_LOCATION (decl) if decl is not DECL_P, use input_location instead. Formatting fixes. * gcc.dg/pr113262.c: New test.

2023-12-16Add support for target_version attributeAndrew Carlotti1-4/+36
This patch adds support for the "target_version" attribute to the middle end and the C++ frontend, which will be used to implement function multiversioning in the aarch64 backend. On targets that don't use the "target" attribute for multiversioning, there is no conflict between the "target" and "target_clones" attributes. This patch therefore makes the mutual exclusion in C-family, D and Ada conditonal upon the value of the expanded_clones_attribute target hook. The "target_version" attribute is only added to C++ in this patch, because this is currently the only frontend which supports multiversioning using the "target" attribute. Support for the "target_version" attribute will be extended to C at a later date. Targets that currently use the "target" attribute for function multiversioning (i.e. i386 and rs6000) are not affected by this patch. gcc/ChangeLog: * attribs.cc (decl_attributes): Pass attribute name to target. 2023-12-16c-family: Simplify attribute exclusion handlingAndrew Carlotti1-48/+30
This patch changes the handling of mutual exclusions involving the target and target_clones attributes to use the generic attribute exclusion lists. Additionally, the duplicate handling for the always_inline and noinline attribute exclusion is removed. The only change in functionality is the choice of warning message displayed - due to either a change in the wording for mutual exclusion warnings, or a change in the order in which different checks occur. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-attribs.cc (attr_always_inline_exclusions): New. 2023-12-05Introduce strub: machine-independent stack scrubbingAlexandre Oliva1-0/+82
This patch adds the strub attribute for function and variable types, command-line options, passes and adjustments to implement it, documentation, and tests. Stack scrubbing is implemented in a machine-independent way: functions with strub enabled are modified so that they take an extra stack watermark argument, that they update with their stack use, and the caller can then zero it out once it regains control, whether by return or exception. There are two ways to go about it: at-calls, that modifies the visible interface (signature) of the function, and internal, in which the body is moved to a clone, the clone undergoes the interface change, and the function becomes a wrapper, preserving its original interface, that calls the clone and then clears the stack used by it. Variables can also be annotated with the strub attribute, so that functions that read from them get stack scrubbing enabled implicitly, whether at-calls, for functions only usable within a translation unit, or internal, for functions whose interfaces must not be modified. There is a strict mode, in which functions that have their stack scrubbed can only call other functions with stack-scrubbing interfaces, or those explicitly marked as callable from strub contexts, so that an entire call chain gets scrubbing, at once or piecemeal depending on optimization levels. In the default mode, relaxed, this requirement is not enforced by the compiler. The implementation adds two IPA passes, one that assigns strub modes early on, another that modifies interfaces and adds calls to the builtins that jointly implement stack scrubbing. Another builtin, that obtains the stack pointer, is added for use in the implementation of the builtins, whether expanded inline or called in libgcc. There are new command-line options to change operation modes and to force the feature disabled; it is enabled by default, but it has no effect and is implicitly disabled if the strub attribute is never used. There are also options meant to use for testing the feature, enabling different strubbing modes for all (viable) functions. for gcc/ChangeLog * Makefile.in (OBJS): Add ipa-strub.o. 2023-12-05Restore build with GCC 4.8 to GCC 5Richard Sandiford1-2/+2
GCC 5 and earlier applied array-to-pointer decay too early, which affected the new attribute namespace code. A reduced example of the construct that the attribute code uses is: struct S { template<__SIZE_TYPE__ N> S(int (&)[N]); }; struct T { int a; S b; }; int a[] = { 1 }; T t = { 1, a }; This was fixed by f85e1317f8ea933f5c615680353bd646f480f7d3 (PR 16333 et al). 2023-12-02Allow target attributes in non-gnu namespacesRichard Sandiford1-6/+14
Currently there are four static sources of attributes: - LANG_HOOKS_ATTRIBUTE_TABLE - LANG_HOOKS_COMMON_ATTRIBUTE_TABLE - LANG_HOOKS_FORMAT_ATTRIBUTE_TABLE - TARGET_ATTRIBUTE_TABLE All of the attributes in these tables go in the "gnu" namespace. This means that they can use the traditional GNU __attribute__((...)) syntax and the standard [[gnu::...]] syntax. Standard attributes are registered dynamically with a null namespace. There are no supported attributes in other namespaces (clang, vendor namespaces, etc.). This patch tries to generalise things by making the namespace part of the attribute specification. It's usual for multiple attributes to be defined in the same namespace, so rather than adding the namespace to each individual definition, it seemed better to group attributes in the same namespace together. This would also allow us to reuse the same table for clang attributes that are written with the GNU syntax, or other similar situations where the attribute can be accessed via multiple "spellings". The patch therefore adds a scoped_attribute_specs that contains a namespace and a list of attributes in that namespace. It's still possible to have multiple scoped_attribute_specs for the same namespace. E.g. it makes sense to keep the C++-specific, C/C++-common, and format-related attributes in separate tables, even though they're all GNU attributes. Current lists of attributes are terminated by a null name. Rather than keep that for the new structure, it seemed neater to use an array_slice. This also makes the tables slighly more compact. In general, a target might want to support attributes in multiple namespaces. Rather than have a separate hook for each possibility (like the three langhooks above), it seemed better to make TARGET_ATTRIBUTE_TABLE a table of tables. Specifically, it's an array_slice of scoped_attribute_specs. We can do the same thing for langhooks, which allows the three hooks above to be merged into a single LANG_HOOKS_ATTRIBUTE_TABLE. It also allows the standard attributes to be registered statically and checked by the usual attribs.cc checks. The patch adds a TARGET_GNU_ATTRIBUTES helper for the common case in which a target wants a single table of gnu attributes. It can only be used if the table is free of preprocessor directives. There are probably other things we need to do to make vendor namespaces work smoothly. E.g. in principle it would be good to make exclusion sets namespace-aware. But to some extent we have that with standard vs. gnu attributes too. This patch is just supposed to be a first step. gcc/ * attribs.h (scoped_attribute_specs): New structure. 2023-11-29Introduce hardbool attribute for CAlexandre Oliva1-1/+96
This patch introduces hardened booleans in C. The hardbool attribute, when attached to an integral type, turns it into an enumerate type with boolean semantics, using the named or implied constants as representations for false and true. 2023-10-26Add attribute((null_terminated_string_arg(PARAM_IDX)))David Malcolm1-0/+17
This patch adds a new function attribute to GCC for marking that an argument is expected to be a null-terminated string. For example, consider: void test_a (const char *p) __attribute__((null_terminated_string_arg (1))); which would indicate to humans and compilers that argument 1 of "test_a" is expected to be a null-terminated string, with the idea: - we should complain if it's not valid to read from *p up to the first '\0' character in the buffer - we should complain if *p is not terminated, or if it's uninitialized before the first '\0' character This is independent of the nonnull-ness of the pointer: if you also want to express that the argument must be non-null, we already have __attribute__((nonnull (N))), so the user can write e.g.: void test_b (const char *p) __attribute__((null_terminated_string_arg (1)) __attribute__((nonnull (1))); which can also be spelled as: void test_b (const char *p) __attribute__((null_terminated_string_arg (1), nonnull (1))); For a function similar to strncpy, we can use the "access" attribute to express a maximum size of the read: void test_c (const char *p, size_t sz) __attribute__((null_terminated_string_arg (1), nonnull (1), access (read_only, 1, 2))); The patch implements: (a) C/C++ frontends: recognition of this attribute (b) analyzer: usage of this attribute gcc/analyzer/ChangeLog: * region-model.cc (region_model::check_external_function_for_access_attr): Split out, replacing with... 2023-10-20Control flow redundancy hardeningAlexandre Oliva1-0/+22
This patch introduces an optional hardening pass to catch unexpected execution flows. Functions are transformed so that basic blocks set a bit in an automatic array, and (non-exceptional) function exit edges check that the bits in the array represent an expected execution path in the CFG. Functions with multiple exit edges, or with too many blocks, call an out-of-line checker builtin implemented in libgcc. For simpler functions, the verification is performed in-line. -fharden-control-flow-redundancy enables the pass for eligible functions, --param hardcfr-max-blocks sets a block count limit for functions to be eligible, and --param hardcfr-max-inline-blocks tunes the "too many blocks" limit for in-line verification. -fhardcfr-skip-leaf makes leaf functions non-eligible. Additional -fhardcfr-check-* options are added to enable checking at exception escape points, before potential sibcalls, hereby dubbed returning calls, and before noreturn calls and exception raises. A notable case is the distinction between noreturn calls expected to throw and those expected to terminate or loop forever: the default setting for -fhardcfr-check-noreturn-calls, no-xthrow, performs checking before the latter, but the former only gets checking in the exception handler. GCC can only tell between them by explicit marking noreturn functions expected to raise with the newly-introduced expected_throw attribute, and corresponding ECF_XTHROW flag. for gcc/ChangeLog * tree-core.h (ECF_XTHROW): New macro. * tree.cc (set_call_expr): Add expected_throw attribute when ECF_XTHROW is set. 2022-10-07Add a new option -fstrict-flex-arrays[=n] and new attribute strict_flex_arrayQing Zhao1-0/+47
Add the following new option -fstrict-flex-arrays[=n] and a corresponding attribute strict_flex_array to GCC: '-fstrict-flex-arrays' Control when to treat the trailing array of a structure as a flexible array member for the purpose of accessing the elements of such an array. The positive form is equivalent to '-fstrict-flex-arrays=3', which is the strictest. A trailing array is treated as a flexible array member only when it declared as a flexible array member per C99 standard onwards. The negative form is equivalent to '-fstrict-flex-arrays=0', which is the least strict. All trailing arrays of structures are treated as flexible array members. '-fstrict-flex-arrays=LEVEL' Control when to treat the trailing array of a structure as a flexible array member for the purpose of accessing the elements of such an array. The value of LEVEL controls the level of strictness The possible values of LEVEL are the same as for the 'strict_flex_array' attribute (*note Variable Attributes::). You can control this behavior for a specific trailing array field of a structure by using the variable attribute 'strict_flex_array' attribute (*note Variable Attributes::). 'strict_flex_array (LEVEL)' The 'strict_flex_array' attribute should be attached to the trailing array field of a structure. It controls when to treat the trailing array field of a structure as a flexible array member for the purposes of accessing the elements of such an array. LEVEL must be an integer betwen 0 to 3. LEVEL=0 is the least strict level, all trailing arrays of structures are treated as flexible array members. LEVEL=3 is the strictest level, only when the trailing array is declared as a flexible array member per C99 standard onwards ('[]'), it is treated as a flexible array member. There are two more levels in between 0 and 3, which are provided to support older codes that use GCC zero-length array extension ('[0]') or one-element array as flexible array members('[1]'): When LEVEL is 1, the trailing array is treated as a flexible array member when it is declared as either '[]', '[0]', or '[1]'; When LEVEL is 2, the trailing array is treated as a flexible array member when it is declared as either '[]', or '[0]'. This attribute can be used with or without the '-fstrict-flex-arrays'. When both the attribute and the option present at the same time, the level of the strictness for the specific trailing array field is determined by the attribute. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-attribs.cc (handle_strict_flex_array_attribute): New function. 2022-10-06c++, c: Implement C++23 P1774R8 - Portable assumptions [PR106654]Jakub Jelinek1-0/+15
The following patch implements C++23 P1774R8 - Portable assumptions paper, by introducing support for [[assume (cond)]]; attribute for C++. In addition to that the patch adds [[gnu::assume (cond)]]; and __attribute__((assume (cond))); support to both C and C++. As described in C++23, the attribute argument is conditional-expression rather than the usual assignment-expression for attribute arguments, the condition is contextually converted to bool (for C truthvalue conversion is done on it) and is never evaluated at runtime. For C++ constant expression evaluation, I only check the simplest conditions for undefined behavior, because otherwise I'd need to undo changes to *ctx->global which happened during the evaluation (but I believe the spec allows that and we can further improve later). The patch uses a new internal function, .ASSUME, to hold the condition in the FEs. At gimplification time, if the condition is simple/without side-effects, it is gimplified as if (cond) ; else __builtin_unreachable (); and otherwise for now dropped on the floor. The intent is to incrementally outline the conditions into separate artificial functions and use .ASSUME further to tell the ranger and perhaps other optimization passes about the assumptions, as detailed in the PR. When implementing it, I found that assume entry hasn't been added to https://eel.is/c++draft/cpp.cond#6 Jonathan said he'll file a NB comment about it, this patch assumes it has been added into the table as 202207L when the paper has been voted in. With the attributes for both C/C++, I'd say we don't need to add __builtin_assume with similar purpose, especially when __builtin_assume in LLVM is just weird. It is strange for side-effects in function call's argument not to be evaluated, and LLVM in that case (annoyingly) warns and ignores the side-effects (but doesn't do then anything with it), if there are no side-effects, it will work like our if (!cond) __builtin_unreachable (); 2022-10-06 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR c++/106654 gcc/ * internal-fn.def (ASSUME): New internal function. * internal-fn.h (expand_ASSUME): Declare. * internal-fn.cc (expand_ASSUME): Define. * gimplify.cc (gimplify_call_expr): Gimplify IFN_ASSUME. * fold-const.h (simple_condition_p): Declare. * fold-const.cc (simple_operand_p_2): Rename to ... 2022-08-31c: C2x attributes fixes and updatesJoseph Myers1-0/+7
Implement some changes to the currently supported C2x standard attributes that have been made to the specification since they were first implemented in GCC, and some consequent changes: * maybe_unused is now supported on labels. In fact that was already accidentally supported in GCC as a result of sharing the implementation with __attribute__ ((unused)), but needed to be covered in the tests. * As part of the support for maybe_unused on labels, its __has_c_attribute value changed. * The issue of maybe_unused accidentally being already supported on labels showed up the lack of tests for other standard attributes being incorrectly applied to labels; add such tests. * Use of fallthrough or nodiscard attributes on labels already properly resulted in a pedwarn. For the deprecated attribute, however, there was only a warning, and the wording "'deprecated' attribute ignored for 'void'" included an unhelpful "for 'void'". Arrange for the case of the deprecated attribute on a label to be checked for separately and result in a pedwarn. As with inappropriate uses of fallthrough (see commit 6c80b1b56dec2691436f3e2676e3d1b105b01b89), it seems reasonable for this pedwarn to apply regardless of whether [[]] or __attribute__ was used and regardless of whether C or C++ is being compiled. * Attributes on case or default labels (the standard syntax supports attributes on all kinds of labels) were quietly ignored, whether or not appropriate for use in such a context, because they weren't passed to decl_attributes at all. (Note where I'm changing the do_case prototype that such a function is actually only defined in the C front end, not for C++, despite the declaration being in c-common.h.) * A recent change as part of the editorial review in preparation for the C2x CD ballot has changed the __has_c_attribute value for fallthrough to 201910 to reflect when that attribute was actually voted into the working draft. Bootstrapped with no regressions for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu. gcc/c-family/ * c-attribs.cc (handle_deprecated_attribute): Check and pedwarn for LABEL_DECL. * c-common.cc (c_add_case_label): Add argument ATTRS. 2022-07-23Adding three new function attributes for static analysis of file descriptorsImmad Mir1-0/+31
This patch adds three new function attributes to GCC that are used for static analysis of usage of file descriptors: 1) __attribute__ ((fd_arg(N))): The attributes may be applied to a function that takes an open file descriptor at refrenced argument N. It indicates that the passed filedescriptor must not have been closed. Therefore, when the analyzer is enabled with -fanalyzer, the analyzer may emit a -Wanalyzer-fd-use-after-close diagnostic if it detects a code path in which a function with this attribute is called with a closed file descriptor. The attribute also indicates that the file descriptor must have been checked for validity before usage. Therefore, analyzer may emit -Wanalyzer-fd-use-without-check diagnostic if it detects a code path in which a function with this attribute is called with a file descriptor that has not been checked for validity. 2) __attribute__((fd_arg_read(N))): The attribute is identical to fd_arg, but with the additional requirement that it might read from the file descriptor, and thus, the file descriptor must not have been opened as write-only. The analyzer may emit a -Wanalyzer-access-mode-mismatch diagnostic if it detects a code path in which a function with this attribute is called on a file descriptor opened with O_WRONLY. 3) __attribute__((fd_arg_write(N))): The attribute is identical to fd_arg_read except that the analyzer may emit a -Wanalyzer-access-mode-mismatch diagnostic if it detects a code path in which a function with this attribute is called on a file descriptor opened with O_RDONLY. gcc/analyzer/ChangeLog: * sm-fd.cc (fd_param_diagnostic): New diagnostic class. 2022-05-07c, c++: attribute format on a ctor with a vbase [PR101833, PR47634]Marek Polacek1-11/+22
Attribute format takes three arguments: archetype, string-index, and first-to-check. The last two specify the position in the function parameter list. r63030 clarified that "Since non-static C++ methods have an implicit this argument, the arguments of such methods should be counted from two, not one, when giving values for string-index and first-to-check." Therefore one has to write struct D { D(const char *, ...) __attribute__((format(printf, 2, 3))); }; However -- and this is the problem in this PR -- ctors with virtual bases also get two additional parameters: the in-charge parameter and the VTT parameter (added in maybe_retrofit_in_chrg). In fact we'll end up with two clones of the ctor: an in-charge and a not-in-charge version (see build_cdtor_clones). That means that the argument position the user specified in the attribute argument will refer to different arguments, depending on which constructor we're currently dealing with. This can cause a range of problems: wrong errors, confusing warnings, or crashes. This patch corrects that; for C we don't have to do anything, and in C++ we can use num_artificial_parms_for. It would be wrong to rewrite the attributes the user supplied, so I've changed POS to be passed by reference so that we don't have to change all the call sites of positional_argument and we still get the default_conversion adjustment. Attribute format_arg is not affected, because it requires that the function returns "const char *" which will never be the case for cdtors. PR c++/101833 PR c++/47634 gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-attribs.cc (positional_argument): Pass POS by reference. Deal with FN being either a function declaration or function type. 2022-04-30c-family: attribute ((aligned, mode)) [PR100545]Jason Merrill1-1/+15
The problem here was that handle_mode_attribute clobbered the changes of any previous attribute, only copying type qualifiers to the new type. And common_handle_aligned_attribute had previously set up the typedef, so when we later called set_underlying_type it saw DECL_ORIGINAL_TYPE set and just returned, even though handle_mode_attribute had messed up the TREE_TYPE. So, let's fix handle_mode_attribute to copy attributes, alignment, and typedefness to the new type. Like in r10-7215-g700d4cb08c88aec37c13e21e63dd61fd698baabc 2 years ago, I've run grep -v 'long long\|optab optab\|template template\|double double' *.{[chS],cc} */*.{[chS],cc} *.def config/*/* 2>/dev/null | grep ' \([a-zA-Z]\+\) \1 ' and for the cases that looked clearly wrong changed them, mostly by removing one of the duplicated words but in some cases with other changes. 2022-03-07 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> gcc/ * tree-ssa-propagate.cc: Fix up duplicated word issue in a comment. * config/riscv/riscv.cc: Likewise. * config/darwin.h: Likewise. * config/i386/i386.cc: Likewise. * config/aarch64/thunderx3t110.md: Likewise. * config/aarch64/fractional-cost.h: Likewise. * config/vax/vax.cc: Likewise. * config/rs6000/pcrel-opt.md: Likewise. * config/rs6000/predicates.md: Likewise. * ctfc.h: Likewise. * tree-ssa-uninit.cc: Likewise. * value-relation.h: Likewise. * gimple-range-gori.cc: Likewise. * ipa-polymorphic-call.cc: Likewise. * pointer-query.cc: Likewise. * ipa-sra.cc: Likewise. * internal-fn.cc: Likewise. * varasm.cc: Likewise. * gimple-ssa-warn-access.cc: Likewise. gcc/analyzer/ * store.cc: Fix up duplicated word issue in a comment. * analyzer.cc: Likewise. * engine.cc: Likewise. * sm-taint.cc: Likewise. gcc/c-family/ * c-attribs.cc: Fix up duplicated word issue in a comment. gcc/cp/ * cvt.cc: Fix up duplicated word issue in a comment. * pt.cc: Likewise. * module.cc: Likewise. * coroutines.cc: Likewise. gcc/fortran/ * trans-expr.cc: Fix up duplicated word issue in a comment. * gfortran.h: Likewise. * scanner.cc: Likewise. gcc/jit/ * libgccjit.h: Fix up duplicated word issue in a comment.

2022-02-11[gimplefe] Add vector_mask attribute to get access to vector boolsRichard Biener1-0/+36
The following adds __attribute__((vector_mask)) to get access to the corresponding mask type for a vector type. The implementation simply uses truth_type_for so creating a mask type that's not what the target would choose as canonical, say a AVX2 style one when AVX512VL is enabled, is not possible. It might be possible to provide access to that with an optional argument specifying the precision of the bool element. The syntax is as simple as typedef vector_type mask_type __attribute__((vector_mask)); In theory this allows to create unit testcases for vector lowering and ISEL. 2022-02-11 Richard Biener <rguenther@suse.de> gcc/c-family/ * c-attribs.cc (c_common_attribute_table): Add entry for vector_mask. (handle_vector_mask_attribute): New. gcc/c/ * gimple-parser.cc (c_parser_gimple_statement): Properly parse VEC_COND_EXPRs. gcc/testsuite/ * gcc.dg/gimplefe-48.c: New testcase.
