2024-01-09 | ada: Error compiling Ada 2022 object renaming with no subtype mark | Steve Baird | 1 | -6/+8
In some cases the compiler would crash or generate spurious errors compiling a legal object renaming declaration that lacks a subtype mark. In addition to fixing the immediate problem, change Atree.Copy_Slots so that attempts to modify either the Empty or the Error nodes (e.g., by passing one of them as the target in a call to Rewrite) are ineffective. Cope with the consequences of this. gcc/ada/ * sem_ch8.adb (Check_Constrained_Object): Before updating the subtype mark of an object renaming declaration by calling Rewrite, first check whether the destination of the Rewrite call exists. * atree.adb (Copy_Slots): Return without performing any updates if Destination equals Empty or Error, or if Source equals Empty. Any of those conditions indicates an error case. * sem_ch12.adb (Analyze_Formal_Derived_Type): Avoid cascading errors. * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Number_Declaration): In an error case, do not pass Error as destination in a call to Rewrite. (Find_Type_Of_Subtype_Indic): In an error case, do not pass Error or Empty as destination in a call to Rewrite.
2023-12-19 | ada: Fix internal error on call with parameter of predicated subtype | Eric Botcazou | 1 | -9/+2
The problem is that the predicated subtype does not inherit all the required attributes of a string subtype with a static predicate. gcc/ada/ * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Subtype_Declaration): Remove a short-circuit for subtypes without aspects when it comes to predicates. * sem_util.adb (Inherit_Predicate_Flags): Deal with private subtypes whose full view is an Itype.
2023-12-19 | ada: Rename Is_Constr_Subt_For_UN_Aliased flag | Eric Botcazou | 1 | -9/+18
The flag is set on the constructed subtype of an object with unconstrained nominal subtype that is aliased and is used by the code generator to adjust the layout of the object. But it is actually only used for array subtypes, where it determines whether the object is allocated with its bounds, and this usage could be extended to other cases than the original case. gcc/ada/ * einfo.ads (Is_Constr_Subt_For_UN_Aliased): Rename into... (Is_Constr_Array_Subt_With_Bounds): ...this. * exp_ch3.adb (Expand_N_Object_Declaration): Adjust to above renaming and remove now redundant test. * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Object_Declaration): Likewise, but set Is_Constr_Array_Subt_With_Bounds only on arrays. * gen_il-fields.ads (Opt_Field_Enum): Apply same renaming. * gen_il-gen-gen_entities.adb (Entity_Kind): Likewise. * gen_il-internals.adb (Image): Remove specific processing for Is_Constr_Subt_For_UN_Aliased. * treepr.adb (Image): Likewise. * gcc-interface/decl.cc (gnat_to_gnu_entity): Adjust to renaming and remove now redundant tests. * gcc-interface/trans.cc (Identifier_to_gnu): Likewise. 2023-11-30 | ada: Remove SPARK legality checks | Yannick Moy | 1 | -56/+0
SPARK legality checks apply only to code with SPARK_Mode On, and are performed again in GNATprove for detecting SPARK-compatible declarations in code with SPARK_Mode Auto. Remove this duplication, to only perform SPARK legality checking in GNATprove. After this patch, only a few special SPARK legality checks are performed in the frontend, which could be moved to GNATprove later. gcc/ada/ * contracts.adb (Analyze_Entry_Or_Subprogram_Body_Contract): Remove checking on volatility. 2023-11-28 | ada: Fix internal error on declare expression in expression function | Eric Botcazou | 1 | -2/+3
When the expression function is not a completion, its (return) expression does not cause freezing so analyzing the declare expression in this context must not freeze the type of the object. The change also contains another fix, which makes it so that the compiler does not evaluate a nonstatic representation attribute of a scalar subtype in the same context if the subtype is not already frozen. gcc/ada/ * sem_attr.adb (Eval_Attribute): Do not proceed in a spec expression for nonstatic representation attributes of a scalar subtype when the subtype is not frozen. * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Object_Declaration): Do not freeze the type of the object in a spec expression.

2023-11-07 | ada: Implement Aspects as fields under nodes | Viljar Indus | 1 | -29/+40
In the previous implementation Aspect Specifications were stored in a separate table and not directly under each node. This implementation included a lot of extra code that needed to be maintained manually. The new implementation stores Aspect_Specfications as a syntactic field under each node. This removes the extra code that was needed to store, traverse and clone aspects for nodes. gcc/ada/ * aspects.adb (Exchange_Aspects): Removed. This method was typically called after a Rewrite method. Now since the Rewrite switches the aspects between the new and the old node it is no longer needed. (Has_Aspects): Converted to a utility method that performs the same before as the previous Has_Aspects field did. Meaning it shows whether a node actually has aspects or not. (Copy_Aspects): New utility method that performs a deep copy of the From nodes aspects. (Aspect_Specfications): Removed. No longer needed. Replaced by the primitive operation for the Aspect_Specification fields. (Set_Aspect_Specifications): Likewise. (Aspect_Specifications_Hash_Table): Remove the table and all the utility methods for storing the old aspects. * aspects.ads: Likewise. * atree.adb (Copy_Separate_Tree): Remove custom code for aspects. (New_Copy): Likewise. (Replace): Likewise. (Rewrite): Likewise. * exp_ch3.adb (Expand_N_Object_Declaration): Keep the aspects from the old node. * exp_ch6.adb (Validate_Subprogram_Calls): Previously aspects were ignored because they were not on the tree. Explicitly ignore them here when traversing the tree. * exp_unst.adb (Build_Tables): Likewise * gen_il-fields.ads: Remove Has_Aspects and add Aspect_Specifications fields. * gen_il-gen-gen_nodes.adb: Add Aspect_Specification fields for all nodes that can have aspects. Additionally add Expression_Copy for Aspect_Speficiations to avoid reusing the Associated_Node for generic instantiation and aspect analysis. * ghost.adb (Remove_Ignored_Ghost_Node): Remove call to Remove_Aspects. The rewritten node is a Null_Statement that cannot have aspects and there is not anything to gain from removing them from the Orignal_Node of N since it technically is not part of the active tree. * inline.adb (Process_Formals_In_Aspects): Simplify code for node traversal. * par-ch13.adb: Avoid setting the parent explicitly for the Aspect_Specifications list. 2023-09-19 | ada: Private extensions with the keyword "synchronized" are always limited. | Richard Wai | 1 | -3/+9
GNAT was relying on synchronized private type extensions deriving from a concurrent interface to determine its limitedness. This does not cover the case where such an extension derives a limited interface. RM-7.6(6/2) makes is clear that "synchronized" in a private extension implies the derived type is limited. GNAT should explicitly check for the presence of "synchronized" in a private extension declaration, and it should have the same effect as the presence of “limited”. gcc/ada/ChangeLog: * sem_ch3.adb (Build_Derived_Record_Type): Treat presence of keyword "synchronized" the same as "limited" when determining if a private extension is limited. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gnat.dg/sync_tag_discriminals.adb: New test. * gnat.dg/sync_tag_limited.adb: New test. 2023-08-01 | ada: Bugbox compiling Constrained_Protected_Object'Image | Steve Baird | 1 | -0/+2
In some cases, a bugbox is generated when compiling an example that references X'Image, where X is a constrained object of a discriminated protected type. gcc/ada/ * sem_ch3.adb (Constrain_Corresponding_Record): When copying information from the unconstrained record type to a newly constructed constrained record subtype, the Direct_Primitive_Operations attribute must be copied.
2023-08-01 | ada: Incorrect optimization for unconstrained limited record component type | Steve Baird | 1 | -18/+0
If the discriminants of an immutably limited record type have defaults, then it is safe to assume that a discriminant of an object of this type will never change once it is initialized. In some cases, this means that the default discriminant values can be treated like a constraint for purposes of determining the amount of storage needed for an unconstrained object. However, it is not safe to perform this optimization when determining the size needed for an unconstrained component of an enclosing type. This optimization was sometimes being incorrectly performed in this case. This could save storage in some cases, but in other cases a constraint check could incorrectly fail when initializing a component of an aggregate if the discriminant values of the component differ from the default values. gcc/ada/ * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Component_Declaration): Remove Build_Default_Subtype_OK call and code that could only executed in the case where the removed call would have returned True. Other calls to Build_Default_Subtype_Ok are unaffected by this change.
2023-06-20 | ada: Fix bug in predicate checks with address clauses | Bob Duff | 1 | -1/+10
This patch fixes a compiler bug triggered by having a type with some defaulted components, and a predicate, and an object of that type with an address clause. In this case, the compiler was crashing. gcc/ada/ * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Object_Declaration): Remove predicate-check generation if there is an address clause. These are unnecessary, and cause gigi to crash. * exp_util.ads (Following_Address_Clause): Remove obsolete "???" comments. The suggested changes were done long ago.
2023-06-20 | ada: Small fixes to handling of private views in instances | Eric Botcazou | 1 | -1/+8
The main change is the removal of the special bypass for private views in Resolve_Implicit_Dereference, which in exchange requires additional work in Check_Generic_Actuals and a couple more calls to Set_Global_Type in Save_References_In_Identifier. This also removes an unused parameter in Convert_View and adds a missing comment in Build_Derived_Record_Type. gcc/ada/ * exp_ch7.adb (Convert_View): Remove Ind parameter and adjust. * sem_ch12.adb (Check_Generic_Actuals): Check the type of both in and in out actual objects, as well as the type of formal parameters of actual subprograms. Extend the condition under which the views are swapped to nested generic constructs. 2023-06-13 | ada: Support new GNAT-specific aspect Ghost_Predicate | Yannick Moy | 1 | -17/+6
New aspect Ghost_Predicate allows the use of ghost entities in the predicate expression, even if the type is not ghost itself. As a result, subtypes with a ghost predicate cannot be used in membership tests. Subtypes with ghost predicates are subject to the same additional restrictions as subtypes with aspect Dynamic_Predicate. They are governed for compilation by assertion policy Ghost. Checking of the predicate itself is governed by the usual assertion policy (Static_Predicate/Dynamic_Predicate/Predicate) independently of the ghost predicate. gcc/ada/ * doc/gnat_rm/implementation_defined_aspects.rst: Document new aspect. * doc/gnat_rm/implementation_defined_pragmas.rst: Whitespace. * aspects.adb (Init_Canonical_Aspect): Set it to Predicate. * aspects.ads: Set global constants for new aspect. * einfo.ads: Describe new flag related to new aspect. * exp_ch6.adb (Can_Fold_Predicate_Call): Do not fold new aspect. * exp_util.adb (Make_Predicate_Check): Add comment. * gen_il-fields.ads: Add new flag. * gen_il-gen-gen_entities.adb: Add new flag. * ghost.adb (Is_OK_Ghost_Context): Ghost predicate is an OK ghost context. 2023-05-30 | ada: Only build access-to-subprogram wrappers when expander is active | Piotr Trojanek | 1 | -10/+2
For access-to-subprogram types with Pre/Post aspects we create a wrapper routine that evaluates these aspects. Spec of this wrapper was created always, while its body was only created when expansion was enabled. Now we only create these wrappers when expansion is enabled. In particular, we don't create them in GNATprove mode; instead, GNATprove picks the Pre/Post expressions directly from the aspects. gcc/ada/ * exp_ch3.adb (Build_Access_Subprogram_Wrapper_Body): Build wrapper body if requested by routine that builds wrapper spec. * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Full_Type_Declaration): Only build wrapper when expander is active. 2023-05-29 | ada: Analyze pre/post on access-to-subprogram without a wrapper | Piotr Trojanek | 1 | -12/+3
Aspects Pre/Post attached to an access-to-subprogram type were relocated to a spec of a wrapper subprogram and analyzed there; the body of the wrapper was only created with expansion enabled. However, there were several problems with this approach. When switch -gnat2022 was missing, we didn't relocate the Pre/Post aspects to wrapper and complained that their placement is incorrect (because we wrongly assumed that relocation is unconditional). Now we gently inform, that these aspects are Ada 2022 features that require -gnat20222 switch. When switch -gnata was missing, we entirely bypassed analysis of the Pre/Post aspects on access-to-subprogram. This was unlike for Pre/Post aspects on subprograms, which are checked for legality regardless of the -gnata switch. Finally, in the GNATprove backend we were picking the Pre/Post contract on an access-to-subprogram type from the wrapper, which was awkward as otherwise we had to ignore the wrapper specs and special-case for their missing bodies. In general, it is cleaner for GNATprove to extract the aspect expressions from where they originally appear and not from various expansion artifacts like access-to-subprogram wrappers (but the same applies to predication functions, type invariant procedures and default initialization procedures). Now we analyze the Pre/Post aspects on the types where they are originally attached, regardless of the -gnata switch. Once we adapt GNATprove to pick the aspect expression from there, we will stop creating the wrapper spec when expansion is disabled. gcc/ada/ * contracts.adb (Add_Pre_Post_Condition): Adapt to handle pre/post of an access-to-subprogram type. 2023-05-23 | ada: ICE on BIP call in class-wide function return within instance | Gary Dismukes | 1 | -1/+0
The compiler blows up (such as with a Storage_Error or Assert_Failure) on a call to a limited build-in-place function occurring in the return for a function with a limited class-wide result. Such a function should include extra formals for a task master and activation chain (because it's possible for a limited class-wide type to have values with task parts), but when the enclosing function occurs within an instantiation and the result subtype comes from a formal type, the extra formals were missing for the enclosing function. As a result, the attempt to retrieve the task master formal for passing along to a BIP call in the return failed when calling Build_In_Place_Formal to loop through the formals. When determining the need for the formals in Create_Extra_Formals, Needs_BIP_Actual_Task_Actuals was returning False, because Might_Have_Tasks incorrectly returned False due to the test of Is_Limited_Record flag on the class-wide generic actual subtype's Etype being False. Is_Limited_Record was not being properly inherited by the class-wide type in the case of private extensions, because Make_Class_Wide_Type was called in Analyze_Private_Extension_Declaration before certain flags (such as Is_Limited_Record and Is_Controlled_Active) are inherited later in Build_Derived_Record_Type (which will also call Make_Class_Wide_Type). This is corrected by removing the early call to Make_Class_Wide_Type. gcc/ada/ * exp_ch6.adb (Might_Have_Tasks): Remove unneeded Etype call from call to Is_Limited_Record, since that flag is now properly inherited by class-wide types. * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Private_Extension_Declaration): Remove call to Make_Class_Wide_Type, which is done too early, and will later be done in Build_Derived_Record_Type after flags such as Is_Limited_Record and Is_Controlled_Active have been set on the derived type.
2023-05-23 | ada: Remove the body of System.Storage_Elements | Eric Botcazou | 1 | -0/+1
All the subprograms declared in the unit have convention Intrinsic and their current implementation makes some implicit assumptions that are not valid universally, so it is replaced by a direct expansion. This is mostly straightforward because Resolve_Intrinsic_Operator already contains the required circuitry, but a few adjustements are necessary. gcc/ada/ * exp_ch4.adb (Expand_N_Op_Mod): Deal with the special mod operator of System.Storage_Elements. * exp_intr.adb (Expand_To_Integer): New procedure. (Expand_Intrinsic_Call): Call Expand_To_Integer appropriately. (Expand_To_Address): Deal with an argument with modular type. * sem_ch3.adb (Derive_Subprogram): Also set convention Intrinsic on a derived intrinsic subprogram. * sem_res.adb (Resolve_Arithmetic_Op): Deal with intrinsic operators not coming from source exactly as those coming from source and also generate a reference in both cases. (Resolve_Op_Expon): Likewise. (Resolve_Intrinsic_Operator): Call Implementation_Base_Type to get a nonprivate base type. * snames.ads-tmpl (Name_To_Integer): New intrinsic name. * libgnat/s-stoele.ads: Replace pragma Convention with pragma Import throughout and remove pragma Inline_Always and Pure_Function. * libgnat/s-stoele.adb: Replace entire contents with pragma No_Body. * libgnat/s-atacco.adb: Adjust comment about pragma No_Body.
2023-05-23 | ada: Fix bogus error on predicated limited record declared in protected type | Eric Botcazou | 1 | -0/+1
This happens when the limited record is initialized with a function call because of a couple of issues: incorrect tree sharing when building the predicate check and too late freezing for a compiler-generated subtype. It turns out that building the predicate check manually is redundant here, since predicate checks are automatically generated during the expansion of assignment statements, and the late freezing can be easily fixed. gcc/ada/ * exp_ch3.adb (Build_Record_Init_Proc.Build_Assignment): Do not manually generate a predicate check. Call Unqualify before doing pattern matching on the expression. * sem_ch3.adb (Analyze_Object_Declaration): Also freeze the actual subtype when it is built in the definite case.

2023-05-15 | ada: Clean up vanishing entity fields | Bob Duff | 1 | -22/+7
Fix all the failures caused by enabling Check_Vanishing_Fields on entities in all cases except the case of converting to or from E_Void. But leave Check_Vanishing_Fields disabled by default (controlled by -gnatd_v flag), because it might be too slow even for assertions-on mode, and we should deal with the E_Void cases eventually. The failures are fixed either by adding calls to Reinit_Field_To_Zero, or by changing which entities have which fields. Note that in a series of Reinit_Field_To_Zero calls, the optional Old_Ekind parameter is only useful on the first such call. gcc/ada/ * atree.adb (Check_Vanishing_Fields): Disable the check for "root/base type only" fields. This is a bug fix -- if we're checking some subtype S, we don't want to reach over to the root or base type and Reinit_Field_To_Zero of that, thus modifying the field for lots of subtypes other than S. Disable in the to/from E_Void cases. Misc cleanup. * gen_il-gen-gen_entities.adb: Define First_Entity, Last_Entity, and Stored_Constraint for all type entities, because there are too many cases where Reinit_Field_To_Zero would otherwise be needed. In any case, it seems cleaner to have First_Entity and Last_Entity defined in the same entity kinds. * einfo.ads: (First_Entity, Last_Entity, Stored_Constraint): Update comments to reflect gen_il-gen-gen_entities.adb changes. (Lit_Hash): Add missing "[root type only]" comment. * exp_ch5.adb: Add Reinit_Field_To_Zero calls for vanishing fields. * sem_ch10.adb: Likewise. * sem_ch6.adb: Likewise. * sem_ch7.adb: Likewise. * sem_ch8.adb: Likewise. * sem_ch3.adb: Likewise. 2022-12-06 | ada: Elide the copy in extended returns for nonlimited by-reference types | Eric Botcazou | 1 | -0/+139
This implements elision of the copy operation for extended return statements in the case of nonlimited by-reference types (the copy operation is already elided for limited types by the front-end and nonlimited non-by-reference types by the code generator), which comprise controlled and tagged types. The implementation partly reuses the machinery implemented for limited types (the build-in-place machinery) to allocate the return object directly on the primary or the secondary stack, depending on whether the result type of the function is constrained or not. This requires further special-casing for the allocators generated by this machinery as well as an adjustment to the implementation of a specific case of string concatenation. gcc/ada/ * einfo.ads (Actual_Subtype): Document additional usage. * exp_aggr.adb (Expand_Array_Aggregate): Replace test on Is_Build_In_Place_Return_Object with Is_Special_Return_Object. * exp_ch3.adb (Expand_N_Object_Declaration): Factor out parts of the processing done for build-in-place return objects and reuse them to implement a similar processing for specific return objects. * exp_ch4.adb (Expand_Allocator_Expression): Do not generate a tag assignment or an adjustment if the allocator was made for a special return object. 2022-11-08 | ada: Enforce matching of extra formals | Javier Miranda | 1 | -13/+12
This patch enforces matching of extra formals in overridden subprograms, subprogram renamings, and subprograms to which attributes 'Access, 'Unchecked_Access, or 'Unrestricted_Access is applied (for these access cases the subprogram is checked against its corresponding subprogram type). 2022-09-06 | [Ada] Enforce matching of extra formals | Javier Miranda | 1 | -12/+11
This patch enforces matching of extra formals in overridden subprograms, subprogram renamings, and subprograms to which attributes 'Access, 'Unchecked_Access, or 'Unrestricted_Access is applied (for these access cases the subprogram is checked against its corresponding subprogram type). gcc/ada/ * debug.adb (Debug_Flag_Underscore_X): Switch added temporarily to allow disabling extra formal checks. * exp_attr.adb (Expand_N_Attribute_Reference [access types]): Add extra formals to the subprogram referenced in the prefix of 'Unchecked_Access, 'Unrestricted_Access or 'Access; required to check that its extra formals match the extra formals of the corresponding subprogram type. * exp_ch3.adb (Stream_Operation_OK): Declaration moved to the public part of the package. (Validate_Tagged_Type_Extra_Formals): New subprogram. (Expand_Freeze_Record_Type): Improve the code that takes care of adding the extra formals of dispatching primitives; extended to add also the extra formals to renamings of dispatching primitives. * exp_ch3.ads (Stream_Operation_OK): Declaration moved from the package body. * exp_ch6.adb (Has_BIP_Extra_Formal): Subprogram declaration moved to the public part of the package. In addition, a parameter has been added to disable an assertion that requires its use with frozen entities. (Expand_Call_Helper): Enforce assertion checking extra formals on thunks. (Is_Build_In_Place_Function): Return False for entities with foreign convention. (Make_Build_In_Place_Call_In_Object_Declaration): Occurrences of Is_Return_Object replaced by the local variable Is_OK_Return_Object that evaluates to False for scopes with foreign convention. (Might_Have_Tasks): Fix check of class-wide limited record types. (Needs_BIP_Task_Actuals): Remove assertion to allow calling this function in more contexts; in addition it returns False for functions returning objects with foreign convention. (Needs_BIP_Finalization_Master): Likewise. (Needs_BIP_Alloc_Form): Likewise. * exp_ch6.ads (Stream_Operation_OK): Declaration moved from the package body. In addition, a parameter has been added to disable assertion that requires its use with frozen entities. * freeze.adb (Check_Itype): Add extra formals to anonymous access subprogram itypes. (Freeze_Expression): Improve code that disables the addition of extra formals to functions with foreign convention. (Check_Extra_Formals): Moved to package Sem_Ch6 as Extra_Formals_OK. (Freeze_Subprogram): Add extra formals to non-dispatching subprograms. * sem_ch3.adb (Access_Subprogram_Declaration): Defer the addition of extra formals to the freezing point so that we know the convention. (Check_Anonymous_Access_Component): Likewise. (Derive_Subprogram): Fix documentation. * sem_ch6.adb (Check_Anonymous_Return): Fix check of access to class-wide limited record types. (Check_Untagged_Equality): Placed in alphabetical order. (Extra_Formals_OK): Subprogram moved from freeze.adb. (Extra_Formals_Match_OK): New subprogram. (Has_BIP_Formals): New subprogram. (Has_Extra_Formals): New subprograms. (Needs_Accessibility_Check_Extra): New subprogram. (Needs_Constrained_Extra): New subprogram. (Parent_Subprogram): New subprogram. (Add_Extra_Formal): Minor code cleanup. (Create_Extra_Formals): Enforce matching extra formals on overridden and aliased entities. (Has_Reliable_Extra_Formals): New subprogram. * sem_ch6.ads (Extra_Formals_OK): Subprogram moved from freeze.adb. (Extra_Formals_Match_OK): New subprogram. * sem_eval.adb (Compile_Time_Known_Value): Improve predicate to avoid assertion failure; found working on this ticket; this change does not affect the behavior of the compiler because this subprogram has an exception handler that returns False when the assertion fails. * sem_util.adb (Needs_Result_Accessibility_Level): Do not return False for dispatching operations compiled with Ada_Version < 2012 since they they may be overridden by primitives compiled with Ada_Version >= Ada_2012. |
