This patch is a first pass at fixing readelf message pluralization. I've deliberately not fixed the "out of memory" errors since it's very unlikely that they will ever be complaining about not being able to allocate for a single entry, and a few others where the size is very unlikely to be 1 byte. Then there are messages like this one: "Out of %lu items there are %zu bucket clashes (longest of %zu entries).\n" I suppose this could be split into three parts, "Of %lu items ", "there are %zu bucket clashes ", and "(longest of %zu entries).\n", each part being printed separately, but that might not be ideal for sentence construction in other languages. For now I'm punting on this one. Changes to readelf output require lots of testsuite adjustment.. binutils/ * dwarf.c (read_uleb128): Properly pluralize messages. When ld is running with something other than --hash-style=sysv by default, numerous tests need tweaking. Most of the changes just add --hash-style=sysv. On x86-64, the procedure linkage table (PLT) is used to 1. Call external function. 2. Call internal IFUNC function. The best implementation is selected for the target processor at run-time. 3. Act as the canonical function address. 4. Support LD_AUDIT to audit external function calls. 5. Support LD_PROFILE to profile external function calls. PLT looks like: PLT0: push GOT[1] jmp *GOT[2] nop PLT1: jmp *GOT[name1_index] push name1_reloc_index jmp PLT0 GOT is an array of addresses. Initially the GOT entry of name1 is filled with the address of the "push name1_reloc_index" instruction. The function, name1, is called via "jmp *GOT[name1]" in the PLT entry. Even when lazy binding is disabled by "-z now", the PLT0 entry may still be used with LD_AUDIT or LD_PROFILE if PLT entry is used for canonical function address. When linker is invoked with "-z bndplt", a different PLT layout in .plt is used: PLT0: push GOT[1] bnd jmp *GOT[2] nop PLT1: push name1_reloc_index bnd jmp PLT0 nop together with a second PLT section, .pl.bnd: PLT1: bnd jmp *GOT[name1_index] nop where the GOT entry of name1 is filled with the address of the push instruction of the corresponding entry in .plt. 1. Many of the ld tests are not run for cross builds, in some cases because the test needs to run a newly linked executable, and in others simply because it was easier to write the test for native only. Even when a test needs to run, it's good to compile and link to exercise the linker. So that's what this patch does. I've also rid us of the old ld_link procedure with all the HOSTING_CRT0 etc. setup. It's much simpler to just link with $CC. This does mean that a cross build with cross-compiler installed but no cross C-library will give lots of failures. If that turns out to be too annoying, I guess we can write a tcl procedure to detect it and not run all the extra tests. * Makefile.am (bootstrap): Delete rule. On i386, IFUNC function must be called via PLT. Since PLT in PIC object uses EBX register, R_386_PLT32 relocation must be used to call IFUNC function even when IFUNC function is defined locally. Linker should issue an error when R_386_PC32 relocation is used to call IFUNC function. If a backend supports it, PLT entry isn't needed when all references to a STT_GNU_IFUNC symbols are done via GOT or static function pointers. For GOT entries, We generate dynamic R_*_GLOB_DAT relocations for preemptable symbols and R_*_IRELATIVE relocations for non-preemptable symbols to update them with real function address. For static pointer pointers, we generate dynamic pointer relocations and store them in: 1. .rel[a].ifunc section in PIC object. 2. .rel[a].got section in dynamic executable. 3. .rel[a].iplt section in static executable. R_386_GOT32X, R_X86_64_GOTPCRELX and R_X86_64_REX_GOTPCRELX relocations retrieve the symbol address via its GOT slot. If the symbol address is known at the link-time, we can use it directly by changing instruction encoding. Indirect branch can only be converted to PC relative direct branch. MOV can be changed to LEA or encoded differently with signed address. The subset of binary operations can be encoded only with signed address. If undefined weak symbol is resolved to zero link-time, we can use it as address. Zero addresss can't used with PC relative direct branch when PIC is true since the current PC is unknown. In 64-bit, 32-bit relocation for PC relatiave direct branch to zero may also overflow. If this optimization causes relocation overflow, --no-relax can be used to work around it. bfd/ PR ld/19609 * elf32-i386.c (elf_i386_convert_load): Convert to R_386_32 for load with locally bound symbols if PIC is false or there is no base register. Add support for STT_GNU_IFUNC symbols to the AArch64 bfd backend. non_got_ref may not be set when building shared library. We need to set non_got_ref if there are any non-PIC relocations. But we only did this when there were no PLT/GOT relocations.
