When building GDB with clang 16, I got this, CXX maint.o maint.c:1045:23: error: implicit truncation from 'int' to a one-bit wide bit-field changes value from 1 to -1 [-Werror,-Wsingle-bit-bitfield-constant-conversion] m_space_enabled = 1; ^ ~ maint.c:1057:22: error: implicit truncation from 'int' to a one-bit wide bit-field changes value from 1 to -1 [-Werror,-Wsingle-bit-bitfield-constant-conversion] m_time_enabled = 1; ^ ~ maint.c:1073:24: error: implicit truncation from 'int' to a one-bit wide bit-field changes value from 1 to -1 [-Werror,-Wsingle-bit-bitfield-constant-conversion] m_symtab_enabled = 1; ^ ~ 3 errors generated. Work around this by using bool bitfields instead. Tested by rebuilding on x86_64-linux with clang 16 and gcc 12. Approved-By: Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>

The segfault happens because: - the inferior call mechanism doesn't setup %ebx - %ebx instead is 0 - the jump to "*0xc(%ebx)" reads from memory at 0xc Fix this by setting up %ebx properly in i386_thiscall_push_dummy_call. Fixes this failure with target board unix/-m32/-pie/-fPIE reported in PR28467: ... FAIL: gdb.base/nodebug.exp: p/c (int) array_index("abcdef",2) ... This reverts commit 62e77f56f0ce8b10122881d8f0acd70e113fde93. (except for ChangeLog and a bugfix in minimal_symbol_reader::install) As agreed on the mailing list, now that GDB 9 has branched, this patch reverts the change to set worker-threads to zero. Per discussion on gdb-patches with Joel, this patch turns off multihreaded symbol loading by default. It can be turned on using: maint set worker-threads unlimited To keep the behavior as close as possible to the old code, it still calls symbol_set_names in the old place if n_worker_threads is 0. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-11-27 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * maint.c (n_worker_threads): Default to 0. 2019-07-09Rename common to gdbsupportTom Tromey1-1/+1
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. 2019-06-06Add timestamps to "maint time" outputTom Tromey1-3/+4
Currently "maint time" will print the amount of time a command took. Sometimes, though, it's useful to have a timestamp as well -- for example if one is correlating a gdb log with some other log. This patch adds a timestamp to the start and end of each command when this setting is in effect. This also removes a "//" comment and changes scoped_command_stats to use DISABLE_COPY_AND_ASSIGN; two minor things I noticed while working on the patch. This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). This patch fixes a few problems with GDB's time handling. #1 - It avoids problems with gnulib's C++ namespace support On MinGW, the struct timeval that should be passed to gnulib's gettimeofday replacement is incompatible with libiberty's timeval_sub/timeval_add. That's because gnulib also replaces "struct timeval" with its own definition, while libiberty expects the system's. E.g., in code like this: gettimeofday (&prompt_ended, NULL); timeval_sub (&prompt_delta, &prompt_ended, &prompt_started); timeval_add (&prompt_for_continue_wait_time, &prompt_for_continue_wait_time, &prompt_delta); That's currently handled in gdb by not using gnulib's gettimeofday at all (see common/gdb_sys_time.h), but that #undef hack won't work with if/when we enable gnulib's C++ namespace support, because that mode adds compile time warnings for uses of ::gettimeofday, which are hard errors with -Werror. #2 - But there's an elephant in the room: gettimeofday is not monotonic... We're using it to: a) check how long functions take, for performance analysis b) compute when in the future to fire events in the event-loop c) print debug timestamps But that's exactly what gettimeofday is NOT meant for. Straight from the man page: ~~~ The time returned by gettimeofday() is affected by discontinuous jumps in the system time (e.g., if the system administrator manually changes the system time). If you need a monotonically increasing clock, see clock_gettime(2). ~~~ std::chrono (part of the C++11 standard library) has a monotonic clock exactly for such purposes (std::chrono::steady_clock).
