Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

gdb.interrupt was introduced to implement DAP request cancellation.
However, because it can be run from another thread, and because I
didn't look deeply enough at the implementation, it turns out to be
racy.
The fix here is to lock accesses to certain globals in extension.c.
Note that this won't work in the case where configure detects that the
C++ compiler doesn't provide thread support. This version of the
patch disables DAP entirely in this situation.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 38. I also ran gdb.dap/pause.exp
in a thread-sanitizer build tree to make sure the reported race is
gone.

Right now, Python is shut down via a final cleanup. However, it seems
to me that it is better for extension languages to be shut down
explicitly, after all the ordinary final cleanups are run. The main
reason for this is that a subsequent patch adds another case like
finalize_values; and rather than add a series of workarounds for
Python shutdown, it seemed better to let these be done via final
cleanups, and then have Python shutdown itself be the special case.

We currently pass frames to function by value, as `frame_info_ptr`.
This is somewhat expensive:
- the size of `frame_info_ptr` is 64 bytes, which is a bit big to pass
by value
- the constructors and destructor link/unlink the object in the global
`frame_info_ptr::frame_list` list. This is an `intrusive_list`, so
it's not so bad: it's just assigning a few points, there's no memory
allocation as if it was `std::list`, but still it's useless to do
that over and over.
As suggested by Tom Tromey, change many function signatures to accept
`const frame_info_ptr &` instead of `frame_info_ptr`.
Some functions reassign their `frame_info_ptr` parameter, like:

I wondered what to do about them, do I leave them as-is or change them
(and need to introduce a separate local variable that can be
re-assigned). I opted for the later for consistency. It might not be
clear why some functions take `const frame_info_ptr &` while others take
`frame_info_ptr`. Also, if a function took a `frame_info_ptr` because
it did re-assign its parameter, I doubt that we would think to change it
to `const frame_info_ptr &` should the implementation change such that
it doesn't need to take `frame_info_ptr` anymore. It seems better to
have a simple rule and apply it everywhere.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

Since GDB now requires C++17, we don't need the internally maintained
gdb::optional implementation. This patch does the following replacing:
- gdb::optional -> std::optional
- gdb::in_place -> std::in_place
- #include "gdbsupport/gdb_optional.h" -> #include <optional>
This change has mostly been done automatically. One exception is
gdbsupport/thread-pool.* which did not use the gdb:: prefix as it
already lives in the gdb namespace.

This commit adds a new extension_language_ops hook which allows an
extension to handle the case where GDB can't find a separate debug
information file for a particular objfile.
This commit doesn't actually implement the hook for any of GDB's
extension languages, the next commit will do that. This commit just
adds support for the hook to extension-priv.h and extension.[ch], and
then reworks symfile-debug.c to call the hook.
Right now the hook will always return its default value, which means
GDB should do nothing different. As such, there should be no user
visible changes after this commit.
I'll give a brief description of what the hook does here so that we
can understand the changes in symfile-debug.c. The next commit adds a
Python implementation for this new hook, and gives a fuller
description of the new functionality.
Currently, when looking for separate debug information GDB tries three
things, in this order:
1. Use the build-id to find the required debug information,
2. Check for .gnu_debuglink section and use that to look up the
required debug information,
3. Check with debuginfod to see if it can supply the required
information.
The new extension_language_ops::handle_missing_debuginfo hook is
called if all three steps fail to find any debug information. The
hook has three possible return values:
a. Nothing, no debug information is found, GDB continues without the
debug information for this objfile. This matches the current
behaviour of GDB, and is the default if nothing is implementing this
new hook,
b. Install debug information into a location that step #1 or #2
above would normally check, and then request that GDB repeats steps
#1 and #2 in the hope that GDB will now find the debug information.
If the debug information is still not found then GDB carries on
without the debug information. If the debug information is found
the GDB loads it and carries on,
c. Return a filename for a file containing the required debug
information. GDB loads the contents of this file and carries on.
The changes in this commit mostly involve placing the core of
objfile::find_and_add_separate_symbol_file into a loop which allows
for steps #1 and #2 to be repeated.
We take care to ensure that debuginfod is only queried once, the first
time through. The assumption is that no extension is going to be able
to control the replies from debuginfod, so there's no point making a
second request -- and as these requests go over the network, they
could potentially be slow.
The warnings that find_and_add_separate_symbol_file collects are
displayed only once assuming that no debug information is found. If
debug information is found, even after the extension has operated,
then the warnings are not shown; remember, these are warnings from GDB
about failure to find any suitable debug information, so it makes
sense to hide these if debug information is found.

I noticed that if Ctrl-C was typed just while GDB is evaluating a
breakpoint condition in the background, and GDB ends up reaching out
to the Python interpreter, then the breakpoint condition would still
fail, like:

The fix is to disable cooperative SIGINT handling while handling
inferior events, so that SIGINT is saved in the global quit flag, and
not in the extension language, while handling an event.
This commit augments the testcase added by the previous commit to test
this scenario as well.

This changes bpstat to use 'bool' rather than 'char', and updates the
uses.

As Hannes pointed out, the Windows target-async patches broke C-c
handling there. Looking into this, I found a few oddities, fixed
here.
First, windows_nat_target::interrupt calls GenerateConsoleCtrlEvent.
I think this event can be ignored by the inferior, so it's not a great
way to interrupt. Instead, using DebugBreakProcess (or a more
complicated thing for Wow64) seems better.
Second, windows_nat_target did not implement the pass_ctrlc method.
Implementing this lets us remove the special code to call
SetConsoleCtrlHandler and instead integrate into gdb's approach to C-c
handling. I believe that this should also fix the race that's
described in the comment that's being removed.
Initially, I thought a simpler version of this patch would work.
However, I think what happens is that some other library (I'm not sure
what) calls SetConsoleCtrlHandler while gdb is running, and this
intercepts and handles C-c -- so that the gdb SIGINT handler is not
called. C-break continues to work, presumably because whatever
handler is installed ignores it.
This patch works around this issue by ensuring that the gdb handler
always comes first.

This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:
sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
problems.
The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

This commit is setup for the next commit.
In the next commit I will add a Python API to intercept the print_insn
calls within GDB, each print_insn call is responsible for
disassembling, and printing one instruction. After the next commit it
will be possible for a user to write Python code that either wraps
around the existing disassembler, or even, in extreme situations,
entirely replaces the existing disassembler.
This commit does not add any new Python API.
What this commit does is put the extension language framework in place
for a print_insn hook. There's a new callback added to 'struct
extension_language_ops', which is then filled in with nullptr for Python
and Guile.
Finally, in the disassembler, the code is restructured so that the new
extension language function ext_lang_print_insn is called before we
delegate to gdbarch_print_insn.
After this, the next commit can focus entirely on providing a Python
implementation of the new print_insn callback.
There should be no user visible change after this commit.

This commit adds styling support to the disassembler output, as such
two new commands are added to GDB:
set style disassembler enabled on|off
show style disassembler enabled
In this commit I make use of the Python Pygments package to provide
the styling. I did investigate making use of libsource-highlight,
however, I found the highlighting results to be inferior to those of
Pygments; only some mnemonics were highlighted, and highlighting of
register names such as r9d and r8d (on x86-64) was incorrect.
To enable disassembler highlighting via Pygments, I've added a new
extension language hook, which is then implemented for Python. This
hook is very similar to the existing hook for source code
colorization.
One possibly odd choice I made with the new hook is to pass a
gdb.Architecture through, even though this is currently unused. The
reason this argument is not used is that, currently, styling is
performed identically for all architectures.
However, even though the Python function used to perform styling of
disassembly output is not part of any documented API, I don't want
to close the door on a user overriding this function to provide
architecture specific styling. To do this, the user would inevitably
require access to the gdb.Architecture, and so I decided to add this
field now.
The styling is applied within gdb_disassembler::print_insn, to achieve
this, gdb_disassembler now writes its output into a temporary buffer,
styling is then applied to the contents of this buffer. Finally the
gdb_disassembler buffer is copied out to its final destination stream.
There's a new test to check that the disassembler output includes some
escape sequences, though I don't check for specific colours; the
precise colors will depend on which instructions are in the
disassembler output, and, I guess, how pygments is configured.
The only negative change with this commit is how we currently style
addresses in GDB.
Currently, when the disassembler wants to print an address, we call
back into GDB, and GDB prints the address value using the `address`
styling, and the symbol name using `function` styling. After this
commit, if pygments is used, then all disassembler styling is done
through pygments, and this include the address and symbol name parts
of the disassembler output.
I don't know how much of an issue this will be for people. There's
already some precedent for this in GDB when we look at source styling.
For example, function names in styled source listings are not styled
using the `function` style, but instead, either GNU Source Highlight,
or pygments gets to decide how the function name should be styled.
If the Python pygments library is not present then GDB will continue
to behave as it always has, the disassembler output is mostly
unstyled, but the address and symbols are styled using the `address`
and `function` styles, as they are today.
However, if the user does `set style disassembler enabled off`, then
all disassembler styling is switched off. This obviously covers the
use of pygments, but also includes the minimal styling done by GDB
when pygments is not available.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

The test-case gdb.gdb/python-interrupts.exp:
- runs to captured_command_loop
- sets a breakpoint at set_active_ext_lang
- calls a python command
- verifies the command triggers the breakpoint
- sends a signal and verifies the result
The test-case is fragile, because (f.i. with -flto) it cannot be guaranteed
that captured_command_loop and set_active_ext_lang are available for setting
breakpoints.
Reimplement the test-case as unittest, using:
- execute_command_to_string to capture the output
- try/catch to catch the "Error while executing Python code" exception
- a new hook selftests::hook_set_active_ext_lang to raise the signal
Tested on x86_64-linux.

Now that both Python and Guile are fully initialized from their
respective finish_initialization methods, the "finish" in the method
name doesn't really make sense; initialization starts _and_ finishes
with that method.
As such, this commit renames finish_initialization to just initialize.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

In order for our SIGINT handling to work correctly with Python we
require that SIGINT be set to SIG_DFL during Python's initialisation.
Currently this is the case, but, in a later commit I plan to delay the
initialisation of Python until after the point where GDB's own SIGINT
handler has been installed.
The consequence of this is that our SIGINT handling would become
broken.
In this commit I propose adding an RAII class that will ensure SIGINT
is set to SIG_DFL during the call to each extension languages
finish_initialization method.
At this point this change should have not effect.

This removes the ALL_EXTENSION_LANGUAGES and
ALL_ENABLED_EXTENSION_LANGUAGES macros, in favor of ordinary
iterators. For ALL_ENABLED_EXTENSION_LANGUAGES, I chose to simply
inline the check, as that seemed simpler than trying to make
filtered_iterator work for std::array. (As an aside, this sort of
thing will be easier once we can use the ranges library...)

This changes the extension language pretty-printers to use the value
API.
Note that new functions were needed, for both Guile and Python.
Currently both languages always wrap values by removing the values
from the value chain. This makes sense to avoid strange behavior with
watchpoints, and to avoid excessive memory use. However, when
printing, it's important to leave the passed-in value untouched, in
case pretty-printing does nothing -- that way the caller can still
access it.

While GNU Source Highlight is good, it's also difficult to build and
distribute. For one thing, it needs Boost. For another, it has an
unusual configuration and installation setup.
Pygments, a Python library, doesn't suffer from these issues, and so I
thought it would be a reasonable fallback.
This patch implements this idea. GNU Source Highlight is preferred,
but if it is unavailable (or fails), the extension languages are
tried. This patch also implements support for Pygments.
Something similar could be done for Guile, using:

However, I don't know enough about Guile internals to make this
happen, so I have not done it here.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,

Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

Adds a configure option --with-system-gdbinit-dir to specify a directory
in which to look for gdbinit files. All files in this directory are
loaded on startup (subject to -n/-nx as usual) as long as the extension
matches a known and enabled scripting language (.gdb/.py/.scm).
This also changes get_ext_lang_of_file to support ".gdb" files, similar
to get_ext_lang_defn's handling of EXT_LANG_GDB.

Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header
sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when
limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script).
So, I'm reverting the patch. I may try again after fixing the issues
pointed out.

This patch sorts the include files for the files [a-f]*.[chyl].
The patch was written by a script.
Tested by the buildbot.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

This replaces more pointer+length with gdb::array_view. This time,
around invoke_xmethod, and then propagating the fallout around, which
inevitably leaks to the overload resolution code.
There are several places in the code that want to grab a slice of an
array, by advancing the array pointer, and decreasing the length
pointer. This patch introduces a pair of new
gdb::array_view::slice(...) methods to make that convenient and clear.
Unit test included.

This changes the typedef_hash_table structure to be a C++ class. It
adds constructors and destructors and changes some functions to be
methods of the class. Then it changes the various users of this class
to adapt. This allows for the removal of some cleanups.
Regression tested by the buildbot.

This converts observers from using a special source-generating script
to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11
by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's
patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change
eliminates the need for a clean rebuild).
Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but
this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to
differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template
function.
Regression tested on the buildbot.

The initial goal of this patch was to remove the usage of
VEC(xmethod_worker_ptr) and corresponding cleanups. I ended up having
to C++ify the xmethod_worker code, to be able to have xmethod_workers
free their data in destructors, and therefore be able to use vectors of
xmethod_worker unique_ptr.
The operations in extension_language_ops that act on one instance of
xmethod_worker (get result type, get args type, invoke) are transformed
to methods of xmethod_worker. xmethod_worker becomes an abstract base
class with virtual pure methods which python_xmethod_worker implements.
The only xmethod-related operation left in extension_language_ops is
get_matching_xmethod_workers, which returns a list of xmethod_workers.
The changes are relatively straightforward, but here are some notes on
things that may raise eyebrows:
- I was not really comfortable with the value_of_xmethod function. At
first it looks like a simple getter, so I considered making it a
method of xmethod_worker. But actually it creates a value and
transfers the ownership of the xmethod_worker to it. It would be a
bit weird and error-prone if calling a method on an object silently
removed the ownership of the object from the caller. To reflect the
behavior more accurately, I renamed it to value_from_xmethod and made
it accept an rvalue-reference (so the caller knows it gives away the
ownership). I noticed the backlink from xmethod_worker to its owning
value was not used, so I removed it.
- Some code, like get_matching_xmethod_workers, made each callee fill
a new vector, which was then merged in the result vector. I think
it's safe if we always pass the same vector around, and each
implementation just appends to it.
- The clone operation does not seem particularly useful, it is removed
in the following patch.

This removes make_cleanup_restore_target_terminal and generally
C++-ifies target terminal handling. It changes all target_terminal_*
functions to be static members of a new target_terminal class and
changes the cleanup to be a scoped_* class.
make_cleanup_override_quit_handler is also removed in favor of simply
using scoped_restore.
Note that there are some files in this patch that I could not compile.
Considering that some of the rewrites were automated, and that none of
these files involed cleanups, I feel that this is relatively safe.
Regression tested by the buildbot.

GDB computes structure byte offsets using a 32 bit integer. And,
first it computes the offset in bits and then converts to bytes. The
result is that any offset that if 512K bytes or larger overflows.
This patch changes GDB to use LONGEST for such calculations.

We have places where we call a blocking gdb_select expecting that a
Ctrl-C will unblock it. However, if the Ctrl-C is pressed just before
gdb_select, the SIGINT handler runs before gdb_select, and thus
gdb_select won't return.
For example gdb_readline_no_editing:

This is a race classically fixed with either the self-pipe trick, or
by blocking SIGINT and then using pselect instead of select.
Blocking SIGINT most of the time would mean that check_quit_flag (and
thus QUIT) would need to do a syscall every time it is called, which
sounds best avoided, since QUIT is called in many loops. Thus we take
the self-pipe trick route (wrapped in a serial event).
Instead of having all places that need this manually add an extra file
descriptor to the set of gdb_select's watched file descriptors, we
introduce a wrapper, interruptible_select, that does that.
The Windows version of gdb_select actually does not suffer from this,
because mingw-hdep.c:gdb_call_async_signal_handler sets a Windows
event that gdb_select always waits on. So this patch can be seen as
generalization of that technique. We can't remove that extra event
from mingw-hdep.c until we get rid of immediate_quit though.
