Currently, help CLASS possibly shows several times the same help,
as it shows it once for the command, and once for each alias.
The final objective of this patch series is to have class_alias used only
for user defined aliases, not anymore for aliases predefined by GDB.
The command 'help aliases' will then only show the user defined aliases.
So, the idea is that GDB predefined aliases will be shown together
with their aliased command.
This commit changes 'help CLASS' so that a command is shown once in the output,
with all its aliases.
This ensures:
* that the user has only to read once the same help text
* and sees the command and all its aliases in a glance, a.o. allowing
the user to choose the preferred way (e.g. the shortest one,
or the most mnemonic one) to type the command.
For example, the old output:

backtrace -- Print backtrace of all stack frames, or innermost COUNT frames.
bt -- Print backtrace of all stack frames, or innermost COUNT frames.

(note that 'where' is not shown in this output)

The output layout chosen is to have the command first, followed by all its
aliases separated by a comma. Note that the command and alias names are
title-styled. For sure, other layouts could be discussed, but this one is IMO
readable and compact.
The function 'help_cmd_list' can be simplified by removing the prefix argument,
as the prefixname of a command can now be retrieved in the GDB command tree
structure.
This also fixes the fact that 'help aliases' wrongly shows a long
list of (non-alias) when defining an alias for a prefix command.
For example, after:
(gdb) alias montre = show
then
(gdb) help aliases
shows hundreds of sub-commands starting with the non aliased command,
such as:
montre -- Generic command for showing things about the debugger.
show ada -- Generic command for showing Ada-specific settings.
show ada print-signatures -- Show whether the output of formal ...
....
'help_cmd_list' is also made static, as it is only used inside cli-decode.c.
Note that the 'help CLASS' is somewhat broken, in the sense that it
sometimes shows too many commands (commands not belonging to CLASS)
and sometimes shows not enough commands (not showing some commands
belonging to CLASS).
For example, 'help breakpoints' shows the command
'disable pretty-printer' and 'disable unwinder', not related to breakpoints.
On the other end, 'help stack' does not show 'disable unwinder'
while 'disable unwinder' is defined in unwinders.py as belonging to class_stack.
Fixing the missing commands is easy to do,
but fixing the excess commands is not straightforward, as many
subcommands have a class 'no_class' or 'all_class'.
Possibly, some of this might be improved/fixed in another patch series.
With this patch series, the 'abbrev flag' has as only remaining purpose
to avoid having the abbreviation alias appearing in the completion list,
so change 'help alias' accordingly.

cmd_show_list function implements the 'show' command.
cmd_show_list output is inconsistent: it sometimes shows a prefix
and sometimes does not.
For example, in the below, you see that there is a prefix before
each value, except for 'enabled'.
(gdb) show style
style address background: The "address" style background color is: none
style address foreground: The "address" style foreground color is: blue
style address intensity: The "address" style display intensity is: normal
enabled: CLI output styling is enabled.
style filename background: The "filename" style background color is: none
...
There are other inconsistencies or bugs e.g. in
the below we see twice insn-number-max, once with a prefix
and once without prefix : last line, just before the value of
instruction-history-size which is itself without prefix.

record btrace bts buffer-size: The record/replay bts buffer size is 65536.
record btrace cpu: btrace cpu is 'auto'.
record btrace pt buffer-size: The record/replay pt buffer size is 16384.
record btrace replay-memory-access: Replay memory access is read-only.
record full insn-number-max: Record/replay buffer limit is 200000.
record full memory-query: Whether query if PREC cannot record memory change of next instruction is off.
record full stop-at-limit: Whether record/replay stops when record/replay buffer becomes full is on.
function-call-history-size: Number of functions to print in "record function-call-history" is 10.
insn-number-max: instruction-history-size: Number of instructions to print in "record instruction-history" is 10.

Also, some values are output several times due to some aliases, so avoid outputting duplicated
values by skipping all aliases.
Now that the command structure has a correct 'back-pointer' from a command
to its prefix command, we can simplify cmd_show_list by removing its prefix argument
and at the same time fix the output inconsistencies and bugs.

The next commit updates command-def-selftests.c to detect missing
or wrong prefix commands in a list of subcommands.
This command structure selftest detects a series of problems
that are fixed by this commit.
Many commands have a null prefix command, e.g.
(gdb) maintenance selftest command_str
Running selftest command_structure_invariants.

Most of these are fixed by the following changes:
* do_add_cmd searches the prefix command having the list
in which the command is added.
This ensures that a command defined after its prefix command
gets the correct prefix command.
* Due to the GDB initialization order, a GDB file can define
a subcommand before the prefix command is defined.
So, have add_prefix_cmd calling a new recursive function
'update_prefix_field_of_prefix_commands' to set the prefix
command of all sub-commands that are now reachable from
this newly defined prefix command. Note that this recursive
call replaces the function 'set_prefix_cmd' that was providing
a partial solution to this problem.
Following that, 2 python commands (defined after all the other GDB
commands) got a wrong prefix command, e.g. "info frame-filter" has
as prefix command the "i" alias of "info". This is fixed by having
lookup_cmd_for_prefixlist returning the aliased command rather than
the alias.
After that, one remaining problem:

Caused by initialize_remote_fileio that was taking the address of
its arguments remote_set_cmdlist and remote_show_cmdlist instead
of receiving the correct values to use as list.

When an alias name starts with the name of another alias,
GDB was accepting to define the aliases in one order (short first, long after),
but refused it the other way around.
So, fix the logic to recognise an already existing alias by using
lookup_cmd_composition.
Also, this revealed a bug in lookup_cmd_composition:
when the searched command is a prefix command, lookup_cmd_composition
was not returning the fact that a command was found even if the
TEXT to parse was fully consumed.

The next commit introduces a selftest that detects when the GDB
command structure does not define a tree when using the pointers
'next/*prefixlist'. This test detects one such case, fixed
by this commit.
The command 'info set' was defined as a specific prefix command,
but re-using the command list already used for the 'show' command.
This leads to the command tree 'next/*prefixlist' to not be a tree.
This change defines 'info set ' as an alias, thereby fixing the selftest.

Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code
directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed
and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand.

As discussed on gdb-patches, this restores info_command and the
breakpoint on info_command in gdb-gdb.gdb. This reverts a tiny part
of 0743fc83c03 ("Replace most calls to help_list and cmd_show_list"),
as well as 652fc23a30a ("Remove gdb-gdb.gdb breakpoint on disappeared
function info_command.").

I looked at all the calls to add_prefix_cmd, and replaced them with
calls to add_basic_prefix_cmd or add_show_prefix_cmd when appropriate.
This makes gdb's command language a bit more regular. I don't think
there's a significant downside.
Note that this patch removes a couple of tests. The removed ones are
completely redundant.

This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method,
objfile::arch.
To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol
reading. Making this change improved performance from 1.986 seconds
to 1.869 seconds. Both measurements were done by taking the mean of
10 runs on a fixed copy of the gdb executable.

Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call
either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such
call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter,
causing incorrect output.
Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this
possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which
simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate.
This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur.
In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think
this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with
what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this
hunk, removed from ada-lang.c:
- printf_unfiltered (_(\
-"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n"));
This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and
allowed the deletion of a macro.
This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Note that I have no way to build the
go32-nat.c change.

While GNU Source Highlight is good, it's also difficult to build and
distribute. For one thing, it needs Boost. For another, it has an
unusual configuration and installation setup.
Pygments, a Python library, doesn't suffer from these issues, and so I
thought it would be a reasonable fallback.
This patch implements this idea. GNU Source Highlight is preferred,
but if it is unavailable (or fails), the extension languages are
tried. This patch also implements support for Pygments.
Something similar could be done for Guile, using:
https://dthompson.us/projects/guile-syntax-highlight.html
However, I don't know enough about Guile internals to make this
happen, so I have not done it here.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

When a Windows program is terminated by a fatal exception, its exit
code is the value of that exception, as defined by the various
EXCEPTION_* symbols in the Windows API headers. This commit emulates
WTERMSIG etc. by translating the fatal exception codes to more-or-less
equivalent Posix signals.

This adds the ability to change the color of the TUI borders, both
ordinary and active. Unlike other styling options, this doesn't allow
setting the intensity, because that is already done by the TUI in a
different way.

This patch adds . as an allowed character for user defined commands.
Combined with 'define-prefix', this allows to e.g. define a set of Valgrind

This patch adds the new 'define-prefix' command that creates (or mark an
existing user defined command) as a prefix command.
This approach was preferred compared to add a -prefix option to
'define' command : with define-prefix, a command can be defined and
afterwards marked as a prefix. Also, it is easier to define a
'prefix' only command in one operation.
This patch also adds completers for the 'define' and 'document' commands.
This makes it easier for the user to type the prefixes for 'define'
and type the documented command name for 'document'.

The problem reported in PR mi/25055 is that the output of the backtrace
command, when executed as breakpoint command does not show when executing
using the MI interpreter:

Interestingly, the function print_frame is called twice during -exec-run:
- once during tui_on_normal_stop where the ui_out is temporarily set to
tui->interp_ui_out (), resulting in the part after the comma in
"Breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:19"
- once during execute_control_command, where the ui_out is the default for the
current interpreter: mi_ui_out, which ignores calls to output text.
The commit 3a87ae656c2 "Use console uiout when executing breakpoint commands"
fixes the problem by temporarily switching to the ui_out of INTERP_CONSOLE in
execute_control_command.
This however caused a regression in redirection (escaping '#' using '\' for
git commit message convenience):

The problem is that the '#0 main () at test.c:19' ends up in the gdb output
output rather than in gdb.txt. This is due to the fact that the redirect is
setup for the current ui_out (which is tui->interp_ui_out ()), while the
backtrace output is printed to the INTERP_CONSOLE ui_out.
Fix this by limiting switching to INTERP_CONSOLE ui_out to when INTERP_MI is
active.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

This changes command_line_input to return a "const char *", which is
appropriate because the memory is owned by command_line_input. Then
it fixes up the users.
I looked at making command_line_input transfer ownership to its caller
instead, but this is complicated due to the way read_next_line is
called, so I decided against it.
Tested by rebuilding.

I went through most of the spots that include readline.h and, when
appropriate, either removed the include or changed it to include
tilde.h.
Note that remote-sim.c and bsd-kvm.c could probably include tilde.h
instead, but I did not change these. I think I can't build the
latter, and I didn't want to set up a sim build for the former.
Tested by rebuilding.

The new convenience functions $_gdb_setting and $_gdb_setting_str
provide access to the GDB settings in user-defined commands.
Similarly, $_gdb_maint_setting and $_gdb_maint_setting_str
provide access to the GDB maintenance settings.
The patch was developed following a comment of Eli about the
'set may-call-functions'. Eli said that user-defined functions
should have a way to change their behavior according to this setting.
Rather than have a specialized $_may_call_functions, this patch
implements a general way to access any GDB setting.
Compared to doing such access via Python 'gdb.parameter' and/or
'gdb.execute("set somesetting tosomevalue"):
* The 'with' command is much better than the above python usage:
if the user types C-c or an error happens between the set pagination off
and the python "set pagination on", the above python
does not restore the original setting.
* Effectively, with the "gdb.parameter" python one liner, it is possible to do
simple 'if' conditions, such as set and restore pagination.
But mixing the "python if" within canned
sequence of commands is cumbersome for non trivial combinations.
E.g. if several commands have to be done for a certain condition
accessed from python, I guess something like will be needed:
python if __some_setting: gdb.execute("some command")
python if __some_setting: gdb.execute("some other command")
python if __some_setting: gdb.execute("some different command")
(without speaking about nested "if-s").
With the convenience function:
if $_gdb_setting("some_setting")
some command
some other command
some different command
end
Integer settings (for example print elements) will also be more difficult
to use.
For example, a user defined function that scans and prints a linked list
might want to use the value of "set print elements" to stop printing
the linked list.
Doing that by mixing python expression/if is likely doable, but seems
not easy with the above one liners.
So, in summary, the $_gdb_setting and $_gdb_setting_str avoids to have the
heterogeneous mix of python and GDB commands in one single script
(and of course, it works even if python is not configured, but that
must be an unusual setup I guess).

This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb
to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output
from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the
inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb
traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>".
I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is
difficult to test. Also, while developing this errors in the
implementation of the new printf formats showed up as regressions.

This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.
The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

The 'info variables', its alias 'whereis', and 'info functions' all
include non-debug symbols in the output by default. The list of
non-debug symbols can sometimes be quite long, resulting in the
debug symbol based results being scrolled off the screen.
This commit adds a '-n' flag to all of the commands listed above that
excludes the non-debug symbols from the results, leaving just the
debug symbol based results.

With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants:
* The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character.
* The last character of a command help is not a newline character.
Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of :
[PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text

but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then.
Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above
invariants.
Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line
of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.'
or ',' character.
This was giving inconsistent results :
* The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated,
sometimes not.
* The first line of command helps was not always designed to be
readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first
'.' or ',' character.
This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems:
< catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names
< down-silently -- Same as the `down' command
while the new help is:
> catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised.
> catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled.
> catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers.
> down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything.
Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline
character, but this was not respected by all commands.
The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences.
So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the
end of %OPTIONS% replacement.
This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants
given above.
It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs.
Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by
'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command
help) now outputs the full first line of a command help.
This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs.
There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot
of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings).

Add command completion for info variables, functions, args, and
locals. This completer only completes the command line options as
these commands all take a regexp which GDB can't really offer
completions for.

Update the 'info variables', 'info functions', 'info locals', and
'info args' commands to make use of the gdb::options framework.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit as I have
left the help text generation using the existing mechanism, which
already tries to customise the text for each of the commands.

Currently string options must be a single string with no whitespace,
this limitation prevents the gdb::option framework being used in some
places.
After this commit, string options can be quoted in single or double
quotes, and quote characters can be escaped with a backslash if needed
to either place them within quotes, or to avoid starting a quoted
argument.
This test adds a new function extract_string_maybe_quoted which is
basically a copy of extract_arg_maybe_quoted from cli/cli-utils.c,
however, the cli-utils.c function will be deleted in the next commit.
There are tests to exercise the new quoting mechanism.

I noticed that init_cli_cmds only installs a command, and so doesn't
need to be handled specially. This patch merges it into
_initialize_cli_cmds.
The help text is constructed dynamically, which is sometimes an
indication that special treatment is needed; but in this case it is
just to insert the value of "gdbinit", which is created at
compile-time and not modified; so this doesn't affect the result.
This version also removes the "gdbinit" global. There's no need for
it, as GDBINIT can be used instead. Note, though, that the help text
in question must still be dynamically constructed, in order to be
i18n-friendly.

I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were
rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes
gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things.
gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this
patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout.
I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the
line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future
build-time savings here.
Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible
that some *-nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of
these. The buildbot caught a few problems along these lines.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

This commit adds a completer for the "pipe" command. It can complete
"pipe"'s options, and the specified GDB command.
To make the completer aware of the "-d" option, this converts the

A following patch will make the "pipe" command use the gdb::option
framework for option processing. However, "pipe"'s only option today
is a string option, "-d DELIM", and gdb::option does not support
string options yet.
This commit adds support for string options, mapped to var_string.
For now, a string is parsed up until the first whitespace. I imagine
that we'll need to add support for quoting so that we could do:
(gdb) cmd -option 'some -string'
without gdb confusing the "-string" for an option.
This doesn't seem important for pipe, so I'm leaving it for another
day.
One thing I'm not happy with, is that the string data is managed as a
raw malloc-allocated char *, which means that we need to xfree it
manually. This is because var_string settings work that way too.
Although with var_string settings we're leaking the strings at gdb
exit, that was never really a problem. For options though, leaking is
undesirable.
I think we should tackle that for both settings and options at the
same time, so for now I'm just managing the malloced data manually.
It's a bit ugly in option_def_and_value, but at least that's hidden
from view.
For testing, this adds a new "-string" option to "maint
test-settings", and then tweaks gdb.base/options.exp to exercise it.

Currently, gdb::option::complete_options just discards any processed
option argument, because no completer needs that data.
When completing "pipe -d XXX gdbcmd XXX" however, the completer needs
to know about -d's argument (XXX), in order to know where input is
already past the gdb command and the delimiter.
In this commit, the fix for that is the factoring out of the
save_option_value_in_ctx function and calling it in complete_options.
For testing, this makes "maint show test-options-completion-result"
show the processed options too, like what the "maint test-options"
subcommands output when run. Then, of course, gdb.base/options.exp is
adjusted.
Doing this exposed a couple latent bugs, which is what the other gdb
changes in the patch are for:
- in the var_enum case, without the change, we'd end up with a null
enum argument, and print:
"-enum (null)"
- The get_ulongest change is necessary to avoid advancing PP in a
case where we end up throwing an error, e.g., when parsing "11x".
Without the change the operand pointer shown by "maint show
test-options-completion-result" would be left pointing at "x"
instead of "11x".

Usage: with SETTING [VALUE] [-- COMMAND]
Usage: w SETTING [VALUE] [-- COMMAND]
With no COMMAND, repeats the last executed command.
SETTING is any setting you can change with the "set" subcommands.
E.g.:
with language pascal -- print obj
with print elements unlimited -- print obj
As can be seen above, the "with" command is just like "set", but
instead of setting the setting permanently, it sets the setting, runs
a command and then restores the setting.

The main advantage of this new command compared to command options,
like the new "print -OPT", is that this command works with any
setting, and, it works nicely when you want to override a setting
while running a user-defined command, like:
(gdb) with print pretty -- usercmd
The disadvantage is that it isn't as compact or easy to type. I think
of command options and this command as complementary. I think that
even with this new command, it makes sense to continue developing the
command options in the direction of exposing most-oft-used settings as
command options.
Inspired by Philippe's "/" command proposal, if no command is
specified, then the last command is re-invoked, under the overridden
setting:

and I think that this can go in without it. We can always downgrade
to making "--" optional if we manage to make it work.
On to the patch itself, the implementation of the command is simpler
than one might expect. A few details:
- I factored out a bit from pipe_command into repeat_previous
directly, because otherwise I'd need to copy&paste the same code and
same error message in the with command.
- The parse_cli_var_uinteger / parse_cli_var_zuinteger_unlimited /
do_set_command changes are necessary since we can now pass an empty
string as argument.
- do_show_command was split in two, as a FIXME comment suggests, but
for a different reason: we need to get a string version of a "set"
command's value, and we already had code for that in
do_show_command. That code is now factored out to the new
get_setshow_command_value_string function.
- There's a new "maint with" command added too:
(gdb) help maint with
Like "with", but works with "maintenance set" variables.
Usage: maintenance with SETTING [VALUE] [-- COMMAND]
With no COMMAND, repeats the last executed command.
SETTING is any setting you can change with the "maintenance set"
subcommands.
"with" and "maint with" share 99% of the implementation.
This might be useful on its own, but it's also useful for testing,
since with this, we can use the "maint set/show test-settings"
settings for exercising the "with" machinery with all the command
type variants (all enum var_types). This is done in the new
gdb/base/with.exp testcase.
The documentation bits are originally based on Philippe's docs for the
"/" command, hence the attribution in the ChangeLog.

alias_command does not detect that the prefixes of the alias command and the
aliased command are not matching: it is comparing the alias prefix
with itself, instead of comparing it with the aliased command prefix.
This causes either the alias command to silently do nothing,
or to have GDB asserting:
(gdb) alias assigne imprime limite-elements = set print elements

A problem internal to GDB has been detected,
Fix the logic, and update gdb.base/alias.exp to test these cases.

I noticed some unnecessary casts of NULL. This removes all the
unnecessary ones, leaving only ones where we must ensure that NULL has
pointer type for passing through varargs.
I removed a couple of useless casts of 0 that I noticed while writing
this.
Tested by rebuilding.
