| This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them. | |||||

| Right now, gdbsupport/common-regcache.h contains two abstractons for a regcache. An opaque type `regcache` (gdb and gdbserver both have their own regcache that is the concrete version of this) and an abstract base class `reg_buffer_common`, that is the base of regcaches on both sides. These abstractions allow code to be written for both gdb and gdbserver, for instance in the gdb/arch sub-directory. However, having two different abstractions is impractical. If some common code has a regcache, and wants to use an operation defined on reg_buffer_common, it can't. It would be better to have just one. Change all instances of `regcache *` in gdbsupport/common-regcache.h to be `reg_buffer_common *`, then fix fallouts. Implementations in gdb and gdbserver now need to down-cast (using gdb::checked_static_cast) from reg_buffer_common to their concrete regcache type. Some of them could be avoided by changing free functions (like regcache_register_size) to be virtual methods on reg_buffer_common. I tried it, it seems to work, but I did not include it in this series to avoid adding unnecessary changes. | This changes gdb to use the C++17 [[fallthrough]] attribute rather than special comments. This was mostly done by script, but I neglected a few spellings and so also fixed it up by hand. I suspect this fixes the bug mentioned below, by switching to a standard approach that, presumably, clang supports. | Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__ explicitly, like: internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var); The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we already use them in several places, including the related gdb_assert_not_reached. So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else, and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands __FILE__/__LINE__ itself. The result is that we now should call internal_error like so: internal_error ("foo %d", var); Likewise for internal_warning. The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done with a perl/sed script. The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h, gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py. | Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. | For a fix I intend to submit, I would need a function that counts the number of set bits in a word. There is __builtin_popcount that is supported by gcc and clang, but there is also a gnulib module that wraps that and provides a fallback for other compilers, so I think it would be good to use it. I also noticed that there is a bitcount function in arch/arm.c, so I thought that as a first step I would replace that one with the gnulib count-one-bits module. This is what this patch does. | GDBServer. ARM can have multiple breakpoint types based on the instruction set it's currently in: arm, thumb or thumb2. GDBServer needs to know what breakpoint is to be inserted at location when inserting a breakpoint. This is handled by the breakpoint_kind_from_pc and sw_breakpoint_from_kind target ops introduced in a previous patch, this patch adds the arm_breakpoint_kind_from_pc and arm_sw_breakpoint_from_kind implementation so that the proper breakpoint type is returned based on the pc. Also in order to share some code with GDB a new file called arm.c have been introduced in arch/. While this file does not contain much yet future patches will add more to it thus the inclusion at this stage. No regressions on Ubuntu 14.04 on ARMv7 and x86. With gdbserver-{native,extended} / { -marm -mthumb } gdb/ChangeLog: * Makefile.in: Add arm.c/o. * arch/arm.c: New file. * arch/arm.h: (IS_THUMB_ADDR): Move macro from arm-tdep.c.
