operand() is not a place that should be calling ignore_rest_of_line.
ignore_rest_of_line shouldn't increment input_line_pointer if already
at buffer limit.

Much of the gas source and older BFD source use "long" for function
parameters and variables, when other types would be more appropriate.
This patch fixes one of those cases. Dollar labels and numeric local
labels do not need large numbers. Small positive itegers are usually
all that is required. Due to allowing longs, it was possible for
fb_label_name and dollar_label_name to overflow their buffers.

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

Unlike the forms consuming/producing integer data, the floating point
ones so far required the 2nd argument to be present, contrary to
documentation. To avoid code duplication, split float_length() out of
hex_float() (taking the opportunity to adjust error message wording).

This is to be able to generate data acted upon by AVX512-BF16 and
AMX-BF16 insns. While not part of the IEEE standard, the format is
sufficiently standardized to warrant handling in config/atof-ieee.c.
Arm, where custom handling was implemented, may want to leverage this as
well. To be able to also use the hex forms supported for other floating
point formats, a small addition to the generic hex_float() is needed.
Extend existing x86 testcases.

The ELF psABI-s are quite clear here: On 32-bit the data type is 12
bytes long (with 2 bytes of trailing padding), while on 64-bit it is 16
bytes long (with 6 bytes of padding). Make hex_float() capable of
handling such padding.
Note that this brings the emitted data size of .dc.x / .dcb.x in line
also for non-ELF targets; so far they were different depending on input
format (dec vs hex).
Extend the existing x86 testcases.

The ELF psABI-s are quite clear here: On 32-bit the underlying data type
is 12 bytes long (with 2 bytes of trailing padding), while on 64-bit it
is 16 bytes long (with 6 bytes of padding). Make s_space() capable of
handling 'x' (and 'p') type floating point being other than 12 bytes
wide (also adjusting documentation). This requires duplicating the
definition of X_PRECISION in the target speciifc header; the compiler
would complain if this was out of sync with config/atof-ieee.c.
Note that for now padding space doesn't get separated from actual
storage, which means that things will work correctly only for little-
endian cases, and which also means that by specifying large enough
numbers padding space can be set to non-zero. Since the logic is needed
for a single little-endian architecture only for now, I'm hoping that
this might be acceptable for the time being; otherwise the change will
become more intrusive.
Note also that this brings the emitted data size of .ds.x vs .tfloat in
line for non-ELF targets as well; the issue will be even more obvious
when further taking into account a subsequent patch fixing .dc.x/.dcb.x
(where output sizes currently differ depending on input format).
Extend existing x86 testcases.

Unlike for .dc.? the parsing here failed to skip the colon before
calling hex_float(). To avoid both variants of parsing going out of sync
again, introduce a helper used by both.
|
|
While the logic in fixup_segment() so far was off by 1 for fixups
dealing with quantities without known signedness, thus failing to report
an overflow when e.g. a byte-sized resulting value is -0x100, the logic
in emit_expr_with_reloc() reported an overflow even on large negative
values when the respective positive ones would not be warned
about, and when fixup_segment() wouldn't do so either. Such diagnostics
all ought to follow a similar pattern of what value range is acceptable.
(If expressions' X_unsigned was reliably set, emit_expr_with_reloc()'s
checking might make sense to tighten based on that flag.)
Note that with commit 80aab57939a0 ("Changes to let cons handle bignums
like general expressions") having added handling of nbytes >
sizeof(valueT) in the O_constant case, converting to O_big, the setting
to zero of "hibit" had become dead. With "hibit" no longer used, this
code now gets dropped altogether. But additionally a respective know()
gets inserted.

Simply use the available abstraction instead of, effectively, trying to
open-code it.
|
|
I've been repeatedly confused by, in particular, the .dc.a potable[]
entry being conditional. Grepping in gas/config/ reveals only very few
targets actually #define-ing it. But as of 7be1c4891a20 the symbol is
always defined, so #ifdef-s are pointless (and, as said, potentially
confusing).
Also adjust documentation to reflect this.

These aren't specific to ELF at all, and seem generally useful.
So pull them out of the ELF backend and into the common core.
|
|
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations.
With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused
section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are
With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes
Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes
The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB.
Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be
included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set
if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is
always included in the symbol table.
Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused
section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS
is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed.
Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to:
1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE.
2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend.
3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker
outputs.

Inserting with replacement is wrong for some gas hash table uses.
This patch implements an htab_insert that conditionally replaces, and
similarly for str_hash_insert. str_hash_insert with replace=0 is
roughly equivalent to the older hash_insert, and str_hash_insert with
replace=1 to the older hash_jam, but return values are different. I
found it useful to know whether the slot was occupied prior to
inserting/replacing. I've also reinstated the fatal errors on messing
up opcode tables with duplicates.

Prior to this commit, on an input such as "88888888888:", GAS hits a
signed integer overflow and likely an assertion failure. I see:
$ echo "88888888888:" | bin/aarch64-none-elf-as
{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:1: Internal error in fb_label_name at ../gas/symbols.c:2049.
Please report this bug.
To fix this issue, I've taken two steps:
1. Change the type used for processing local labels in
read_a_source_file() from int to long, to allow representing more
local labels, and also since all uses of this variable (temp) are
actually of type long.
2. Detect if we would overflow and bail out with an error message
instead of actually overflowing and hitting the assertion in
fb_label_name().
gas/ChangeLog:

* read.c (read_a_source_file): Use long for local labels, detect
overflow and raise an error for overly-long labels.

This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.
The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

What a trip down a rabbit hole this bug has been.
First observation: You can't use deferred_expression in s_leb128.
deferred_expression implements the semantics of .eqv or '==', saving
an expression with minimal simplification for assignment to a symbol
so that the expression is evaluated at uses of the symbol. In
particular, the value of "dot" is not evaluated at the .eqv symbol
assignment, but later. When s_leb128 uses deferred_expression,
"later" is at the end of assembly, giving entirely the wrong value of
"dot". There is no way to fix this for the s_leb128 use without
breaking .equ (which incidentally was already somewhat broken, see
commit e4c2619ad1). So, don't use deferred_expression in s_leb128.
But that leads to the gas test elf/dwarf2-17 failing, because view
symbols are calculated with a chain of expression symbols. In the
dwarf2-17 .L1 case there is a "temp_sym_1 > temp_sym_2" expression,
with temp_sym_1 and temp_sym_2 on either side of a ".balign". Since
".balign" and many other directives moving "dot" are not calculated on
the first (and only) pass over source, .L1 cannot be calculated until
final addresses are assigned to frags. However, ".uleb128 .L1" *is*
calculated immediately, resulting in the wrong value.
The reason why .L1 is calculated immediately is that code in
expr.c:operand after the comment
/* If we have an absolute symbol or a reg, then we know its
value now. */
does as it says and fixes the value of .L1, because .L1 is assigned
to absolute_section in dwarf2dbg.c:set_or_check_view. So, correct
that to expr_section.
Unfortunately that fix leads to failure of the elf/dwarf2-5 test with
../gas/elf/dwarf2-5.s: Error: attempt to get value of unresolved symbol `.L5'
../gas/elf/dwarf2-5.s: Error: attempt to get value of unresolved symbol `.L11'
../gas/elf/dwarf2-5.s: Error: attempt to get value of unresolved symbol `.L12'
So why is that? Well, it turns out that .L5 is defined in terms of
.L4, and apparently .L4 is undefined. But .L4 clearly is defined,
otherwise we would hit an error when trying to use .L4 a little
earlier. There are two copies of .L4! So, symbols are cloned when
that should not happen.
Symbol cloning is a technique used by gas to support saving the value
of symbols that change between uses, but that isn't the case with
.L4. Only one value is set and used for .L4, but indeed .L4 was being
cloned by symbol_clone_if_forward_ref. This despite no forward refs
being present. Also, .L4 is a local symbol and a cursory glance at
symbol_clone_if_forward_ref "if (symbolP && !LOCAL_SYMBOL_CHECK (symbolP))"
would seem to prevent cloning of local symbols. All is not as it
seems though, a curse of using macros. LOCAL_SYMBOL_CHECK modifies
its argument if a "struct local_symbol" is converted to the larger
"struct symbol", as happens when assigning a view symbol value.
That fact results in the recursive call to symbol_clone_if_forward_ref
returning a different address for "add_symbol". This problem could
have been fixed by using symbol_same_p rather than comparing symbol
pointers, but I thought it better to use the real symbol throughout.
Note that symbol_find_exact also returns the real symbol for a
converted local symbol.
Finally, this patch does expose lack of support for forward symbol
definitions in various targets. For example:
alpha-linux +ERROR: ../ld/testsuite/ld-elf/pr11138-2.c: compilation failed
This is caused by view symbol uses. On alpha-linux-gcc (GCC) 8.1.1
20180502 they happen to occur in .byte directives so were silently
broken in cases like elf/dwarf2-17 anyway.
/tmp/ccvtsMfU.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccvtsMfU.s: Fatal error: unhandled relocation type BFD_RELOC_8
/tmp/ccvtsMfU.s: Fatal error: unhandled relocation type BFD_RELOC_8
md_apply_fix on those targets needs to handle fixups that resolve down
to a constant.
