Now that ld properly aligns the end of the relro segment, the hack to

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

* bfd.c (bfd_update_compression_header): Avoid integer overflow.

This adds support for efi-*-aarch64 by virtue of adding a new PEI target
pei-aarch64-little. This is not a full target and only exists to support EFI
at this time.
This means that this target does not support relocation processing and is mostly
a container format. This format has been added to elf based aarch64 targets
such that efi images can be made natively on Linux.
However this target is not valid for use with gas but only with objcopy.
With these changes the resulting file is recognized as an efi image by
third party tools:

When link_info.keep_memory is true, linker caches the relocation
information and symbol tables of input files in memory. When there

Linker plugin_object_p opens the IR archive for each IR archive member.
For GCC plugin, plugin_object_p closes the archive file descriptor. But
for LLVM plugin, the archive file descriptor remains open. If there are
3000 IR archive members, there are 3000 file descriptors for them. We
can run out of file descriptors petty easily.
1. Add archive_plugin_fd and archive_plugin_fd_open_count to bfd so that
we can cache and reuse the IR archive file descriptor for all IR archive
members in the archive.
2. Add bfd_plugin_close_file_descriptor to properly close the IR archive
file descriptor.

Certain library headers and functions are required by C99. This
removes configure tests for them. The patch also removes AC_ISC_POSIX
and AC_HEADER_DIRENT, which the autoconf manual states are obsolescent.
sys/time.h is no longer tangled up with time.h so it can be handled by
the gprof configure.
* configure.ac: Don't check for long long or long double type.
Don't check for alloca.h, limits.h, stddef.h, stdlib.h, string.h,
strings.h, time.h, wchar.h, wctype.h or sys/time.h. Don't check
for strtoull, free, malloc, realloc, getenv, strstr, snprintf,
vsnprintf, strlen or setitimer. Sort AC_CHECK_DECLS.
(AC_ISC_POSIX): Don't invoke.
(AC_HEADER_TIME, AC_HEADER_DIRENT, ACX_HEADER_STRING): Likewise.
* sysdep.h: Remove many HAVE_*_H checks and fallback declarations.
Do test HAVE_SYS_TYPES_H. Don't include sys/time.h. Reorder
header order as per automake AC_INCLUDES_DEFAULT.
* bfd-in.h: Include inttypes.h unconditionally.
* bfd.c (_bfd_doprnt, _bfd_doprnt_scan): Assume long long and
long double are available.
(bfd_scan_vma): Assume long long and strtoull are available.

When linking Windows x86-64 relocatable object files to generate x86-64
ELF executable, we need to subtract __ImageBase, aka __executable_start,
for R_AMD64_IMAGEBASE relocation:
1. Add link_info to struct output_elf_obj_tdata to store linker info and
_bfd_get_link_info() to retrieve it.
2. Add ldelf_set_output_arch to set up link_info.
3. Add pex64_link_add_symbols to create an indirect reference to
__executable_start for __ImageBase to support R_AMD64_IMAGEBASE relocation
when adding symbols from Windows x86-64 relocatable object files to
generate x86-64 ELF executable.
4. Also subtract __ImageBase for R_AMD64_IMAGEBASE when generating x86-64
ELF executable.

elfNN_bed was made writable as an expedient means of communicating
ld -z max-page-size and ld -z common-page-size values to BFD linker

The stub size in GO32 executables has historically been fixed at 2048
bytes, due to hardcoded limitations in bfd. Recent patches to djgpp by
Stas Sergeev (CC'd) have pushed the stub right up to this limit, so if
any further expansion is desired, this must first be patched in bfd.
This series includes three patches: The first changes the meaning of
the bfd->origin field slightly, so that target code can use this to
specify an offset into the file where the actual bfd is located.
The second patch then uses this to enable support for variable-sized
stubs in the coff-go32-exe format.
The final patch is only a cleanup, it normalizes function and variable
names in coff-stgo32.c so that they all begin with the same prefix.

If you manage to put an xcoff object file into a non-xcoff archive
(created by first putting a non-xcoff object file into it), and have
xcoff support compiled into libbfd, then objdump -x on the archive
can segfault. The problem is that _bfd_xcoff_stat_arch_elt expects
abfd->arelt_data->arch_header to be one of the xcoff variants, but
arelt_data is generated depending on the archive format, *not* the
element format.

bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many
places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are
lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use
size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A
32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and
processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some
of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There
no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically
all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't
need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have
something like
symcount * sizeof (void *)
when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that
this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is
larger by far than that of a pointer.

and other tidies. I think it's better to default to passing the
section to bfd_octets_per_byte, even in cases where we know it won't
make a difference.
A number of the coff reloc functions used bfd_octets_per_byte wrongly,
not factoring it into the offset into the data buffer. As it happens,
the targets using those files always had bfd_octets_per_byte equal to
one, so there wasn't any detectable wrong behaviour. However, it is
wrong in the source and might cause trouble for anyone creating a new
target. Besides fixing that, the patch also defines OCTETS_PER_BYTE
as one in target files where that is appropriate.

This patch introduces a new "sorry, cannot handle this file" bfd error
status. The idea is to use this error in cases where bfd hasn't found
a bfd_bad_value error, ie. an input file or set of options that are
invalid, but rather an input file that is simply too difficult to
process. Typically this might happen with fuzzed object files such as
the one in the PR, a wildly improbable core file. Some things are
just not worth wasting time over to fix "properly".

This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.
The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

BFD was leaking memory in bfd_check_format_matches. As part of
deciding the proper format of an archive, BFD looks at the format of
the first file stored. That file's bfd was left open for reasons
given in a comment removed in git commit 0e71e4955cd1 that said:
/* We ought to close `first' here, but we can't, because
we have no way to remove it from the archive cache.
It's close to impossible to figure out when we can
release bfd_ardata. FIXME. */
Well, things have changed since that comment was true and we now can
remove files from the archive cache. Closing the first file is good
and cures some of the leaks. Other leaks are caused by
bfd_check_format_matches throwing away bfd tdata before trying a new
match. That lost the element cache set up when format checking the
first element in the archive. The easiest and cleanest fix is to
simply disable the caching when checking the first element.

Archive element IO is performed on the file of the containing archive,
which leads to the BFD "where" field of archives and their elements
being out of sync with the real file position. (We're talking
traditional archives here, not thin archives.) The old bfd_seek code
recognized this by not attempting to optimize away seeks for
archives. However, there was other code that could return bogus
results. For example, cache.c limits the number of open files by
closing a file and remembering its state once the limit is reached.
If bfd_tell is called on an archive element when the containing
archive is closed, it will return an invalid file pointer.
It's possible to have a valid "where" field for archives by always
using and updating the containing archive BFD. That's what this patch
does. Note that cache.c used to find the containing archive BFD
anyway for the iostream, so we're not really doing extra work, just
transferring it up to the correct abstraction level.
The patch also gets rid of some hacks. bfd_tell was called when
bfd_seek failed, in an attempt to correct "where". That's got to be
papering over another problem, so that code has been removed.
bfd_read also had an "optimiziation" to return early when the number
of bytes was zero, and bfd_seek optimized calls that didn't move the
file pointer. This was covering for a coff_slurp_line_table bug where
IO was attempted on a pe-dll BFD without an iovec.
* bfd.c (struct bfd): Update comment on "where" usage.

calling bfd_tell.

max-page-size only matters for demand paged executables or shared
libraries, and the ideal size is the largest value used by your
operating system. Values larger than necessary just waste file space
and memory. common-page-size also affects file and memory size,
trading a possible small increase in file size for a decrease in
memory size when the operating system is using a common-page-size
page. With a powerpc max-page-size of 64k and common-page-size of 4k
many executables will use no more memory pages when the system page
size is 4k than an executable linked with -z max-page-size=0x1000,
yet will still run on a system using 64k pages. However, when running
on a system using 64k pages relro protection will not be completely
effective.
Due to the relro problem, powerpc binutils has been using a default
common-page-size of 64k since 2014-12-18 (git commit 04c6a44c7),
leading to complaints about increased file and memory sizes. People
not using relro do have a valid reason to complain..
So this patch introduces an extra back-end value to use as the default
for common-page-size when generating relro executables, and enables
the support for powerpc. Non relro executables will now be generated
with a default common-page-size of 4k.
