Add --enable-fortify-source option.
It is now possible to enable fortification through a configure option.
The level may be given as parameter, if none is provided, the configure
script will determine what is the highest level possible that can be set
considering GCC built-ins availability and set it.
If level is explicitly set to 3, configure checks if the compiler
supports the built-in function necessary for it or raise an error if it
isn't.
If the configure option isn't explicitly enabled, it _FORTIFY_SOURCE is
forcibly undefined (and therefore disabled).
The result of the configure checks are new variables, ${fortify_source}
and ${no_fortify_source} that can be used to appropriately populate
CFLAGS.
A dedicated patch will follow to make use of this variable in Makefiles
when necessary.

And make always supported. The configure option was added on glibc 2.25

* Remove glibc.rtld.dynamic_sort changes, it is orthogonal and needs
more discussion.

This reverts commit 6f85dbf102ad7982409ba0fe96886caeb6389fef.
Once this change hits the release branches, it will require relinking
of all statically linked applications before static dlopen works
again, for the majority of updates on release branches: The NEWS file
is regularly updated with bug references, so the __libc_early_init
suffix changes, and static dlopen cannot find the function anymore.
While this ABI check is still technically correct (we do require
rebuilding & relinking after glibc updates to keep static dlopen
working), it is too drastic for stable release branches.

The files NEWS, include/link.h, and sysdeps/generic/ldsodefs.h
contribute to the version fingerprint used for detection. The
fingerprint can be further refined using the --with-extra-version-id
configure argument.
_dl_call_libc_early_init is replaced with _dl_lookup_libc_early_init.
The new function is used store a pointer to libc.so's
__libc_early_init function in the libc_map_early_init member of the
ld.so namespace structure. This function pointer can then be called
directly, so the separate invocation function is no longer needed.
The versioned symbol lookup needs the symbol versioning data
structures, so the initialization of libc_map and libc_map_early_init
is now done from _dl_check_map_versions, after this information
becomes available. (_dl_map_object_from_fd does not set this up
in time, so the initialization code had to be moved from there.)
This means that the separate initialization code can be removed from
dl_main because _dl_check_map_versions covers all maps, including
the initial executable loaded by the kernel. The lookup still happens
before relocation and the invocation of IFUNC resolvers, so IFUNC
resolvers are protected from ABI mismatch.
The __libc_early_init function pointer is not protected because
so little code runs between the pointer write and the invocation
(only dynamic linker code and IFUNC resolvers).

Build glibc programs and tests as PIE by default and enable static-pie
automatically if the architecture and toolchain supports it.
Also add a new configuration option --disable-default-pie to prevent
building programs as PIE.
Only the following architectures now have PIE disabled by default
because they do not work at the moment. hppa, ia64, alpha and csky
don't work because the linker is unable to handle a pcrel relocation
generated from PIE objects. The microblaze compiler is currently
failing with an ICE. GNU hurd tries to enable static-pie, which does
not work and hence fails. All these targets have default PIE disabled
at the moment and I have left it to the target maintainers to enable PIE
on their targets.
build-many-glibcs runs clean for all targets. I also tested x86_64 on
Fedora and Ubuntu, to verify that the default build as well as
--disable-default-pie work as expected with both system toolchains.

libtirpc is mature enough, librpcsvc and rpcgen are provided in

Currently, DT_TEXTREL is incompatible with IFUNC. When DT_TEXTREL or
DF_TEXTREL is seen, the dynamic linker calls __mprotect on the segments
with PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE before applying dynamic relocations. It leads
to segfault when performing IFUNC resolution (which requires PROT_EXEC
as well for the IFUNC resolver).
This patch makes it call __mprotect with extra PROT_WRITE bit, which
will keep the PROT_EXEC bit if exists, and thus fixes the segfault.
FreeBSD rtld libexec/rtld-elf/rtld.c (reloc_textrel_prot) does the same.

There is a configure option --without-fp that specifies that nofpu
sysdeps directories should be used instead of fpu directories.
For most glibc configurations, this option is of no use: either there
is no valid nofpu variant of that configuration, or there are no fpu
or nofpu sysdeps directories for that processor and so the option does
nothing. For a few configurations, if you are using a soft-float
compiler this option is required, and failing to use it generally
results in compilation errors from inline asm using unavailable
floating-point instructions.
We're moving away from --with-cpu to configuring glibc based on how
the compiler generates code, and it is natural to do so for
--without-fp as well; in most cases the soft-float and hard-float ABIs
are incompatible so you have no hope of building a working glibc with
an inappropriately configured compiler or libgcc.
This patch eliminates --without-fp, replacing it entirely by automatic
configuration based on the compiler. Configurations for which this is
relevant (coldfire / mips / powerpc32 / sh) define a variable
with_fp_cond in their preconfigure fragments (under the same
conditions under which those fragments do anything); this is a
preprocessor conditional which the toplevel configure script then uses
in a test to determine which sysdeps directories to use.
The config.make with-fp variable remains. It's used only by powerpc
(sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/Makefile) to add -mhard-float to various
flags variables. For powerpc, -mcpu= options can imply use of
soft-float. That could be an issue if you want to build for
e.g. 476fp, but are using --with-cpu=476 because there isn't a 476fp
sysdeps directory. If in future we eliminate --with-cpu and replace
it entirely by testing the compiler, it would be natural at that point
to eliminate that code as well (as the user should then just use a
compiler defaulting to 476fp and the 476 sysdeps directory would be
used automatically).
Tested for x86_64, and tested with build-many-glibcs.py that installed
shared libraries are unchanged by this patch.

This patch adds several new tunables to control the behavior of
elision on supported platforms[1]. Since elision now depends
on tunables, we should always *compile* with elision enabled,
and leave the code disabled, but available for runtime
selection. This gives us *much* better compile-time testing of
the existing code to avoid bit-rot[2].

glibc has an add-ons mechanism to allow additional software to be
integrated into the glibc build. Such add-ons may be within the glibc
source tree, or outside it at a path passed to the --enable-add-ons
configure option.
localedata and crypt were once add-ons, distributed in separate
release tarballs, but long since stopped using that mechanism.
Linuxthreads was always an add-on. Ports spent some time as an add-on
with separate release tarballs, then was first moved into the glibc
source tree, then had its sysdeps files moved into the main sysdeps
hierarchy so the add-ons mechanism was no longer used. NPTL spent
some time as an add-on in the main glibc tree before stopping using
the add-on mechanism. libidn used to have separate release tarballs
but no longer does so, but still uses the add-ons mechanism within the
glibc source tree. Various other software has supported building with
the add-ons mechanism at times in the past, but I don't think any is
still widely used.
Add-ons involve significant, little-used complexity in the glibc build
system, and make it hard to understand what the space of possible
glibc configurations is. This patch removes the add-ons mechanism.
libidn is now built via the Subdirs mechanism to cause any
configuration using sysdeps/unix/inet to build libidn; HAVE_LIBIDN
(which effectively means shared libraries are available) is now
defined via sysdeps/unix/inet/configure. Various references to
add-ons around the source tree are removed (in the case of maint.texi,
the example list of sysdeps directories is still very out of date).
Externally maintained ports should now put their files in the normal
sysdeps directory structure rather than being arranged as add-ons;
they probably need to change e.g. elf.h anyway, rather than actually
being able to work just as a drop-in subtree. Hurd libpthread should
be arranged similarly to NPTL, so some files might go in a
hurd-pthreads (or similar) top-level directory in glibc, while sysdeps
files should go in the normal sysdeps directory structure (possibly in
hurd or hurd-pthreads subdirectories, just as there are nptl
subdirectories in the sysdeps tree).

Read tunables values from the users using the GLIBC_TUNABLES
environment variable. The value of this variable is a colon-separated
list of name=value pairs. So a typical string would look like this:
GLIBC_TUNABLES=glibc.malloc.mmap_threshold=2048:glibc.malloc.trim_threshold=1024
* config.make.in (have-loop-to-function): Define.
* elf/Makefile (CFLAGS-dl-tunables.c): Add

The tunables framework allows us to uniformly manage and expose global
variables inside glibc as switches to users. tunables/README has
instructions for glibc developers to add new tunables.
Tunables support can be enabled by passing the --enable-tunables
configure flag to the configure script. This patch only adds a
framework and does not pose any limitations on how tunable values are
read from the user. It also adds environment variables used in malloc
behaviour tweaking to the tunables framework as a PoC of the
compatibility interface.

The startup code in csu/, and the brk and sbrk functions are
needed very early in initialization of a statically-linked program,
before the stack guard is initialized; TLS initialization also uses
memcpy, which cannot overrun its own stack. Mark all of these as
-fno-stack-protector.
We also finally introduce @libc_cv_ssp@ and @no_stack_protector@, both
substituted by the configury changes made earlier, to detect the case
when -fno-stack-protector is supported by the compiler, and
unconditionally pass it in when this is the case, whether or not
--enable-stack-protector is passed to configure. (This means that
it'll even work when the compiler's been hacked to pass
-fstack-protector by default, unless the hackage is so broken that
it does so in a way that is impossible to override.)

Add a configure check that looks for python3 and python in that order
since we had agreed in the past to prefer python3 over python in all
our code. The patch also adjusts invocations through the various
Makefiles to use the set variable.

* configure: Regenerated.
* config.make.in (PYTHON): New variable.
* benchtests/Makefile: Don't define PYTHON.
(bench): Define target only if PYTHON was defined.
* Rules: Don't define PYTHON.
Define pretty printer targets only if PYTHON was defined.

(python-flags, python-invoke): Remove.
(tests-printers-out): Use PYTHON instead of python-invoke.

Some configurations may use NSS cryptographic routines but have no
static library for those routines. The following changes allow glibc to
be built and tested with --enable-nss-crypt, but without having a static
NSS library. At a high level the change does two things:
(1) Detect at configure time if static NSS crypto libraries are
available. Assumes libfreebl3.a (instead of the existing Fedora
libfreebl.a which is incomplete) which matches libfreebl3.so.
(2) If static NSS crypto libraries are _not_ available then adjust the
way in which we build tst-linkall-static. This includes excluding a
reference to crypt and not linking against libcrypt.a, all of which
will fail otherwise.
Testing assumptions:
* Static library is named libfreebl3.a (not libfreebl.a as is currently
provided in Fedora), matching libfreebl3.so shared link name.
Tested on x86_64 on Fedora with:
(a) --enable-nss-crypt, with no static NSS library support: PASS
(previous FAIL)
(b) --enable-nss-crypt, with faked static NSS library support: PASS
(unsupported)
* Requires changing elf/Makefile to include a stub
/lib64/libfreebl3.a for testing purposes.
(c) --disable-nss-crypt: PASS
(default)
No regressions on x86_64.

This reduces the build time somewhat and is particularly noticeable
during rebuilds with few code changes.

In 1999 the project split "localedir" into "localedir" (path to compiled
locale archives) and "msgcatdir" (path to message catalogs). This
predates the 2002 change in the GNU Coding Standard to document the use
of "localedir" for the path to the message catalogs. It appears that
newlib, gcc, and several other projects also used "msgcatdir" at one
point or another in the past, and so it is in line with historical
precedent that glibc would also use "msgcatdir." However, given that the
GNU Coding Standard uses "localedir", we will switch to that for
consistency as a GNU project. Previous uses of --localdir didn't work
anyway (see bug 14259).
I am committing this patch in the understanding that nobody would object
to fixing #14259 as part of aligning our variable usage to the GNU
Coding Standard.
Given that previous "localedir" uses were converted to "complocaledir"
by [1], we can now convert "msgcatdir" to "localedir" and complete the
transition. With an addition to config.make.in we also fix bug 14259 and
allow users to specify the locale dependent data directory with
"--localedir" at configure time. There is still no way to control at
configure time the location of the *compiled* locale directory.
Tested on x86_64 with no regressions.
Tested using "--localedir" to specify alternate locale dependent data
directory and verified with "make install DESTDIR=/tmp/glibc".

In preparation to fix the --localedir configure argument we must
move the existing conflicting definition of localedir to a more
appropriate name. Given that all current internal uses of localedir
relate to the compiled locales we rename to complocaledir.

sysdeps/nptl/configure.ac tests for forced unwind support and the C
cleanup attribute, giving errors if either is unsupported. It does
nothing beyond running those two tests.
Both the attribute, and _Unwind_GetCFA which is used in the forced
unwind test, were added in GCC 3.3. Thus these tests are long
obsolete, and this patch removes the configure fragment running them,
along with associated conditionals.

There is a configure test for the presence of glibc 2.0 headers (that
were renamed / no longer installed in glibc 2.1) and associated
support for removing them on "make install".
Normal practice for subsequent removal / renaming of installed files
has been not to do anything special about removing them; if you want
installed files from an old installation removed reliably, you need to
use a packaging system that tracks what files were installed by a
previous glibc package (via installing in an intermediate directory
with install_root). I think it's been long enough since 2.0 that it's
not particularly useful to have that special logic for those old
headers either; this patch removes it.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed shared
libraries are unchanged by the patch).
* configure.ac (old_glibc_headers): Remove configure test.
* configure: Regenerated.

With gcc-4.9, a new -fstack-protector-strong flag is available that is
between -fstack-protector (pretty weak) and -fstack-protector-all (pretty
strong) that provides good trade-offs between overhead but still providing
good coverage. Update the places in glibc that use ssp to use this flag
when it's available.
This also kills off the indirection of hardcoding the flag name in the
Makefiles and adding it based on a have-ssp boolean. Instead, the build
always expands the $(stack-protector) variable to the best ssp setting.
This makes the build logic a bit simpler and allows people to easily set
to a diff flag like:
make stack-protector=-fstack-protector-all

Some distros build+install the timezone tools (zic/zdump/tzselect) outside
of glibc and use the upstream package directly. Add a configure flag to
glibc so they can disable install of those tools.
This allows tests to run & pass regardless of the configure flag. Only
the install of them is impacted.
