I noticed a few ui_out methods that are just trivial wrappers. This
patch moves these to ui-out.h, as it seems like they should be
inlineable.

Replace throw with throw_exeception in do_with_buffered_output.
This patch fixes regressions in gdb.dwarf2/dw2-dir-file-name.exp
caused by commit 519d63439.
do_with_buffered_output needs to use throw_exception instead of
throw to ensure that exceptions of the correct type are thrown.
If using throw, gdb_exception_error may be wrongly converted into
gdb_exception during print_frame_info. This prevents the exception
from being caught in print_stack_frame.

Introduce new ui_file buffering_file to temporarily collect output
written to gdb_std* output streams during print_thread, print_frame_info
and print_stop_event.
This ensures that output during these functions is not interrupted
by debuginfod progress messages.
With the addition of deferred debuginfo downloading it is possible
for download progress messages to print during these events.
Without any intervention we can end up with poorly formatted output:

To fix this we buffer writes to gdb_std* output streams while allowing
debuginfod progress messages to skip the buffers and print to the
underlying output streams immediately. Buffered output is then written
to the output streams. This ensures that progress messages print first,
followed by uninterrupted frame/thread/stop info:

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

I noticed that ui_out::do_progress_end is public, just to support one
use in debuginfod-support.c. This patch makes it private, updates
progress_info to call it from its destructor, and finally changes
debuginfod-support.c to follow.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

If the download size is known, a progress bar is displayed along with
the percentage of completion and the total download size.

with a ticker ("###") that moves across the screen at a rate of 1 tick

too narrow or width has been set to 'unlimited', then only a static
description of the download is printed. No bar or ticker is displayed.

This changes ui_out_redirect_pop to also perform the redirection, and
then updates several sites to use this, rather than explicit
redirects.

The "script" field, output whenever information about a breakpoint with
commands is output, uses wrong MI syntax.

In both the =breakpoint-modified and -break-info output, we have:
script={"aaa","bbb","ccc"}
According to the output syntax [1], curly braces means tuple, and a
tuple contains key=value pairs. This looks like it should be a list,
but uses curly braces by mistake. This would make more sense:
script=["aaa","bbb","ccc"]
Fix it, keeping the backwards compatibility by introducing a new MI
version (MI4), in exactly the same way as was done when fixing
multi-locations breakpoint output in [2].
- Add a fix_breakpoint_script_output uiout flag. MI uiouts will use
this flag if the version is >= 4.
- Add a fix_breakpoint_script_output_globally variable and the
-fix-breakpoint-script-output MI command to set it, if frontends want
to use the fixed output for this without using the newer MI version.
- When emitting the script field, use list instead of tuple, if we want
the fixed output (depending on the two criteria above)

There is no longer any need for ui_out_flag::unfiltered_output --
nothing ever sets this flag. This used to be needed to make the
_unfiltered output work, but now only printf_unfiltered can be used,
and it uses the puts_unfiltered method. This patch removes the flag
and the dead code.

I noticed that 'progress' is a method on ui-out, but it seems to me
that it would be better if the only API were via the progress_meter
class. This patch makes this change, changing progress to be a method
on the meter itself.

I think it only really makes sense to call wrap_here with an argument
consisting solely of spaces. Given this, it seemed better to me that
the argument be an int, rather than a string. This patch is the
result. Much of it was written by a script.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

These methods are just trivial wrappers around the versions accepting
a char pointer. By moving them to the header the compiler can inline
them.

While adding a ui_out::text () overload accepting a std::string, I
noticed that several callers of ui_out::field_string () were converting
std::string instances to char pointers even if not necessary.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

PR build/25250 notes that the gdb 9 pre-release fails to build on
macOS, due to a name clash between field_kind::STRING and the STRING
token in ada-exp.y. I am not sure (I couldn't reproduce this myself),
but presumably this is due to differences caused by the version of
bison in use there.
This patch works around the problem by renaming the field_kind
enumerator. I chose to rename this one because it is used in
relatively few places -- it's just an implementation detail of the
style code.
This version also renames field_kind::SIGNED for consistency.
Let me know what you think. I intend to check this in on the gdb 9
branch as well.

This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb
to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output
from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the
inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb
traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>".
I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is
difficult to test. Also, while developing this errors in the
implementation of the new printf formats showed up as regressions.

This introduces a few gdb-specific %p format suffixes. This is useful
for emitting gdb-specific output in an ergonomic way. It also yields
code that is more i18n-friendly.
The comment before ui_out::message explains the details.
Note that the tests had to change a little. When using one of the gdb
printf functions with styling, there can be spurious style changes
emitted to the output. This did not seem worthwhile to fix, as the
low-level output functions are rather spaghetti-ish already, and I
didn't want to make them even worse.
This change also necessitated adding support for "*" as precision and
width in format_pieces. These are used in various spots in gdb, and
it seemed better to me to implement them than to remove the uses.

This adds more styling to the disassemble command. In particular,
addresses and function names in the disassembly are now styled.
This required fixing a small latent bug in set_output_style. This
function always passed NULL to emit_style_escape; but when writing to
a file other than gdb_stdout, it should emit the style escape
directly. (FWIW this is another argument for better integrating the
pager with ui_file and getting rid of this entire layer.)

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

Since commit
b4be1b064860 ("Fix MI output for multi-location breakpoints")
we get this error when building with --disable-gdbmi:

This is due to breakpoint.c using a function defined in mi/mi-main.c, even
though mi/mi-main.c isn't included in the build.
To fix it, use the flags feature of ui_out. mi_ui_out has the new
fix_multi_location_breakpoint_output flag set for versions >= 3. Also,
move the global variable fix_multi_location_breakpoint_output to
breakpoint.c, so it can be read there even when we build without MI. I
renamed it to fix_multi_location_breakpoint_output_globally so it
doesn't clash with the new enumerator.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid

As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header

This adds style support for variable names. For the time being, this
is only done in backtraces, not in ptype or print; those places do not
use ui-out and so would need ad hoc changes.
This also adds styling to the names printed for local variables in
"backtrace full". This code does not use ui-out, so the styling is
done using the low-level API.

This adds some output styling to the CLI.
A style is currently a foreground color, a background color, and an
intensity (dim or bold). (This list could be expanded depending on
terminal capabilities.)
A style can be applied while printing. For ui-out, this is done by
passing the style constant as an argument. For low-level cases,
fprintf_styled and fputs_styled are provided.
Users can control the style via a number of new set/show commands. In
the interest of not typing many nearly-identical documentation
strings, I automated this. On the down side, this is not very
i18n-friendly.
I've chose some default colors to use. I think it would be good to
enable this by default, so that when users start the new gdb, they
will see the new feature.
Stylizing is done if TERM is set and is not "dumb". This could be
improved when the TUI is available by using the curses has_colors
call. That is, the lowest layer could call this without committing to
using curses everywhere; see my other patch for TUI colorizing.
I considered adding a new "set_style" method to ui_file. However,
because the implementation had to interact with the pager code, I
didn't take this approach. But, one idea might be to put the isatty
check there and then have it defer to the lower layers.

This patch replaces the cleanups that close the list and tuple of the
btrace instruction history output with ui_out_emit_tuple and

This patch introduces a bit of infrastructure -- namely, a minimal
std::optional analogue called gdb::optional, and an RAII template
class that works like make_cleanup_ui_out_tuple_begin_end or
make_cleanup_ui_out_list_begin_end -- and then uses these in the
Python code. This removes a number of cleanups and generally
simplifies this code.
std::optional is only available in C++17. Normally I would have had
this code check __cplusplus, but my gcc apparently isn't new enough to
find <optional>, even with -std=c++1z; so, because I could not test
it, the patch does not do this.

This patch starts from the desire to eliminate
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file &
friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary
ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation.
- mem_fileopen -> string_file
mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated
as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot
(diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.)
string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in
the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to
mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually.
- ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone
The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct
writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced
ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had
inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead
move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string
copying.
Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the
stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by
obstack_copy0.
With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put
mechanism was possible.

calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to
call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried),
it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to
touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with
"&stb".

The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used
as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The
string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The
'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file
inherit from stdio_file.

This patch finalizes the C++ conversion of the ui-out subsystem, by
turning the ui_out and ui_out_impl structures into a single class
hierarchy. ui_out functions are turned into virtual methods of that new
class, so as a result there are a lot of call sites to update.
In the previous version of the patchset, there were separate ui_out and
ui_out_impl classes, but it wasn't really useful and added boilerplate.
In this version there is simply an ui_out base class that is
extended for CLI, TUI and MI.
It's a bit hard to maintain a ChangeLog for such a big patch, I did my
best but I'm sure there are some missing or outdated info in there...
