2020-06-04ELF: Don't check relocations in non-loaded, non-alloced sectionsH.J. Lu1-9/+0
Don't do anything special with non-loaded, non-alloced sections. In particular, any relocs in such sections should not affect GOT and PLT reference counting (ie. we don't allow them to create GOT or PLT entries), there's no possibility or desire to optimize TLS relocs, and there's not much point in propagating relocs to shared libs that the dynamic linker won't relocate. 2020-03-02elf_backend_section_flags and _bfd_elf_init_private_section_dataAlan Modra1-2/+2
I was looking at elf_backend_section_flags as a means of setting SEC_SMALL_DATA for .sdata, .sbss and the like, and condidered adding an asection* parameter to access the section name easily before realising that hdr->bfd_section of course makes the section available. So no new parameter needed. In fact the flagword* parameter isn't needed either, so out it goes. The patch also tidies some horrible code in _bfd_elf_new_section_hook that can change whether known ABI sections have sh_type and sh_flags set up depending on which of the bfd_make_section functions is used. (Some of those set section flags before _bfd_elf_new_section_hook is called, others leave the flags zero.) The function also had some hacks for .init_array and .fini_array to affect how _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data behaved for those sections. It's cleaner to do that in _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data. So that all goes and we now init sh_type and sh_flags for all known ABI sections in _bfd_elf_new_section_hook. _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data is changed to suit, and now doesn't just single out SHT_INIT_ARRAY and SHT_FINI_ARRAY but rather any of the special section types. The _bfd_elf_new_section_hook change resulting in +FAIL: ld-aarch64/erratum835769-843419 exposing some errors in the aarch64 backend. elfNN_aarch64_size_stubs should not be looking at linker created sections in the stub bfd. Nor should code like "symtab_hdr = &elf_tdata (input_bfd)->symtab_hdr" be run without first checking that input_bfd is ELF. * elf-bfd.h (elf_backend_section_flags): Remove flagword* param. * elf.c (_bfd_elf_make_section_from_shdr): Set section flags before calling elf_backend_section_flags with adjusted params. Use newsect->flags past that point. (_bfd_elf_new_section_hook): Always set sh_type and sh_flags for special sections. 2020-02-19bfd_size_type to size_tAlan Modra1-4/+4
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is larger by far than that of a pointer. * aix386-core.c (aix386_core_file_p): Use size_t for "amt". * aout-target.h (object_p): Likewise. * aout-tic30.c (tic30_aout_object_p): Likewise. * aoutx.h 2019-09-19bfd_section_* macrosAlan Modra1-8/+8
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage in gas processing. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma), (bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment), (bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags), (bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete. 2017-12-06dyn_relocs tidyAlan Modra1-31/+11
Many targets define their own dyn_relocs struct when they could use struct elf_dyn_relocs. This patch tidies that, and uses readonly_dynrelocs in a few more places. The SH adjust_dynamic_symbol had some really weird code dating back to 2002 that looked over dynamic relocations for any in SEC_HAS_CONTENTS or SEC_READONLY sections, rather than just the usual SEC_READONLY sections. So basically any dynamic relocation. What's more, the SH relocate_section has no support for emitting dynamic relocations in non-PIC. In other words, SH has no support for avoiding copy relocs in non-PIC. I've made that more obvious by using "if (0 && ..)" in asjust_dynamic_symbol. Unfortunately, LM32, M32R, NDS32, and OR1K copied the bogus SH adjust_dynamic_symbol code. So none of those targets would have avoided copy relocs. LM32, M32R, NDS32 get the "if (0)" treatment too. (LM32 is even more broken in that non_got_ref is never set.) OR1K relocate_section looks like it might support dynamic relocs in non-PIC, so I've enabled the copy reloc avoidance code for that target. * elf32-hppa.c (struct elf32_hppa_dyn_reloc_entry): Delete. 2017-11-23Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular listAlan Modra1-6/+6
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. (weakdef): New static inline function. * elflink.c (bfd_elf_record_link_assignment) Test is_weakalias rather than u.weakdef != NULL, and use weakdef function. 2017-10-16ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputsH.J. Lu1-105/+0
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected. Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage collection now. Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to remove unused GOT section. ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt, --bss-plt and --sdata-got. Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. 2017-02-28Nios2 dynobj handling fixesAlan Modra1-101/+53
A number of places in elf32-nios.c created dynamic sections but didn't set the hash table dynobj. That meant we could have duplicate dynamic sections connected to a number of bfds, so size_dynamic_sections didn't properly discard or allocate contents. Also, the entire set of dynamic sections was created in check_relocs on seeing GOT relocs, when only .got related sections are needed, probably done to hide segfaults later in finish_dynamic_sections. The patch fixes these issues and makes the assembler emit errors when nios2 lacks the necessary pc-relative relocs for subtraction expressions, rather than silently generating bad code. eg. ld-elf/merge. I've also tidied uses of elf32_nios2_hash_table and elf_hash_table. bfd/ PR 20995 * elf32-nios2.c (nios2_elf32_relocate_section): Use htab rather than elf32_nios2_hash_table or elf_hash_table. 2017-02-28Don't make dynamic .data.rel.ro SEC_READONLYAlan Modra1-1/+1
I'd made this dynamic section read-only so a flag test distinguished it from .dynbss, but like any other .data.rel.ro section it really should be marked read-write. (It is read-only after relocation, not before.) When using the standard linker scripts this usually doesn't matter since the output section is among other read-write sections and not page aligned. However, it might matter in the extraordinary case of the dynamic section being the only .data.rel.ro section with the output section just happening to be page aligned and a multiple of a page in size. In that case the output section would be read-only, and live it its own read-only PT_LOAD segment, which is incorrect. * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_create_dynamic_sections): Don't make dynamic .data.rel.ro read-only. * elf32-arm.c (elf32_arm_finish_dynamic_symbol): Compare section rather than section flags when deciding where copy reloc goes. * elf32-cris.c (elf_cris_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-hppa.c (elf32_hppa_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-i386.c (elf_i386_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-metag.c (elf_metag_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-microblaze.c (microblaze_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-nios2.c (nios2_elf32_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-or1k.c (or1k_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-ppc.c (ppc_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-s390.c (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-tic6x.c (elf32_tic6x_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-tilepro.c (tilepro_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf64-ppc.c (ppc64_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf64-x86-64.c (elf_x86_64_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfnn-aarch64.c (elfNN_aarch64_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfnn-riscv.c (riscv_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfxx-mips.c (_bfd_mips_vxworks_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfxx-sparc.c (_bfd_sparc_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfxx-tilegx.c (tilegx_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise.

2016-12-26dynrelro section for read-only dynamic symbols copied into executableAlan Modra1-15/+26
Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's .bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in the shared library. Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into the executable to gain a small speed improvement. The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole. This patch cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force. The patch also fixes a microblaze linker segfault on attempting to use dynamic bss variables. bfd/ PR ld/20995 * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_table): Add sdynrelro and sreldynrelro. 2016-05-28Return void from linker callbacksAlan Modra1-9/+9
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. I kept the return status for "notice" because that one does happen to need to return "out of memory". include/ * bfdlink.h (struct bfd_link_callbacks): Update comments.
